“Yawn, anything but a bore” – Heavymetal.no

“Right out of the gates Yawn makes an amazing impression” – The Progressive Subway

“2022 is just starting and some incredible stuff has been released already. For example, “Materialism” – the debut album of the Norwegian experimental band YAWN. Don’t get fooled by the name, their music is anything but yawn-worthy…. “Materialism” kept me on my toes from start to finish. I always admire interesting and avant-garde, but well-balanced approaches to metal like this. This album is another reminder how heavy music doesn’t have to be just blast-beats and growls to make your stomach turn. 9/10” – The Prog Space

“these newcomers, who deliver their first album here, have created a universe of their own… Yawn brilliantly takes up the challenge of playing complex and avant-garde music while remaining affordable for the greatest number. The striking themes, the effectiveness of the riffs and a clever mix of alternating atmospheres have a lot to do with it. The brevity of the disc (37 minutes) also contributes to the fact that it is quickly apprehended. Norway definitely does not stop supplying us with remarkable talents and we are impatiently awaiting the next creations of these five inspired musicians.” – Chromatique

“That Materialism is self-produced — McCormick, Lysne and Rydh are credited as recording, while Tom “Iggy” Ignatus mastered — only underscores the self-determination on the part of Yawn, who’ve apparently spent the last several years putting these pieces together. Their time has not been misspent. Materialism is ambitious as noted, but refuses to leave any of its ambitions unmet, and the surety of what Yawn bring to bear throughout is luminescent, sometimes to a strobing degree. May they continue the exploration of their own wavelength that they’re beginning here.” – The Obelisk

“this is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard… if you want a listening experience that is as expansive as it is inventive, as visceral as it is technical and as savage as it is drop-dead gorgeous, then by fuck do we have the band for you. 10/10” – Ever Metal

“It’s really inspiring to see a band come up with such a unique approach to music and fuse such different elements and sounds. We’re intrigued by the unique concept that Yawn have come up with and excited to hear what’s coming our way on their debut album. We’re pretty certain you’re in for a treat” – Gig Radar

“It’s a demanding album, bulkier, heavier, more difficult than plywood, but equally interesting.” – Stormbringer

“Debut album of this group that brings very experimental music. The tonality is modern – you can even risk that it is djenty – but in its essence it is an exercise between jazz fusion with progressive.” – World of Metal

As 2022 begins, Yawn stands at the ready with their first full length release: “Materialism.” The album reflects the band’s vision of bringing improvisation-based music to the fore in the context of modern concert production. The album features beautiful improvised soundscapes combined with aesthetics drawn from modern progressive metal bands like Meshuggah, Car Bomb, and Vildhjarta. Yawn’s live performances have been described as a magical experience where improvised, open, and formless soundscapes seamlessly transform into and away from machine-precise rhythms, all without warning from the performers on stage.

Since the band’s debut in 2020, Yawn has released their first single “Cement,” toured across southern Norway, and played for 15000 housebound viewers during a streaming concert from Chateau Neuf in Oslo shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic reached Norway.

After the release of Materialism on February 18th, 2022, the band will embark on a European release tour from February 25th to March 9th.

Band Storys / Fun Facts:

1.  During a concert, performing “Lachrymator II: Lignite” our bass player Simen broke not only one, but two of his bass strings during the intro. He pulled off the rest of the show using the two remaining strings, and he played great! After the show, people have referenced this part of the show as some sort of “performance art” -thing, and people have asked us if he broke the strings intentionally.2. All of our recordings are DIY (Except for mastering). Every sound on this record is recorded by ourselves in our own studio, the production is a collaboration between Oskar, Torfinn and Mike and the mix is done entirely by our drummer Oskar.

3. Back in 2019 forming the band, we planned on having a saxophone player in the band.

4. One time playing a show in the southern part of Norway (Kristiansand), Tarjei walked off stage during his and Mike’s impro-duet, leaving the musical landscape to be filled by Mike alone without telling him in advance.

5. Only two minutes and one second of this record contains written-down chord changes.

============================================

Track by Track explained by Yawn:

1. Cement III: Gobsmack
This song was clearly our strongest opener for the album. It represents the feeling of getting caught by surprise, smacked in the face out of nowhere, getting something really different than what you expected, and keep rolling with that.

2. Cement III: Fall Out
Fall out is the part where the song Cement all of a sudden takes a turn and goes into a way different musical landscape than what you would expect. This is a dramatic turn of events very early in the record, and it really gives you a taste of the contrasts this record has to offer. The song sounds like a dream where you don’t know if it’s going to end well or turn into your worst nightmare.

3. Cement III: Restart, Reload, Rebuild
You wake up from the dream. “Brace for impact”. After a minute of heavy 8-string riffing, the first guitar solo of the record is being introduced. Being performed by guitar-player Torfinn Lysne, this solo sets the course for the playful polyrhythmic phrasing heard throughout the record. With a tonal language inspired by Meshuggah’s Frederik Thordendal and a guitar sound heavily inspired by the crazy effects of Car Bomb’s Greg Kubacki, Torfinn shows you his best work as a soloist already at track number three. The track also is the ending part of the piece called “Cement”.

4. Chaos I: Artificial Superstition
Artificial Superstition is the first piece of the record based entirely on computer-generated sounds. All sounds heard in this track are created by processing tracks from other parts of the record – improvised ambiance becomes a drone, a drum fill becomes a grinding texture, and a guitar riff becomes a steampunk sound effect. The piece is composed and performed by guitarist and programmer Mike McCormick, setting a high bar for the electronic soundscapes of this record.

5. Chaos I: Greed
“Greed” is a continuing of the exciting electronic works of Mike McCormick, combined with heavy polyrhythmic riffing from Torfinn and Oskar. The opening soundscape is described by drummer Oskar like being stormed by millions creatures coming after you. The music stops, and the main riff hits you. 10 000 tons of eight-string guitars combined with Tarjei’s stacked synths performing polyrhythmic sequences and unconventional melodies, displays Yawn’s raw aggression and the search for “something different”.

6. Chaos I: ISM
“ISM” (or “capitalism”) was one of the first parts of this record that we ever recorded. The Piece is based on a collective improvisation we did in the studio during the covid-summer of 2020. ISM features Mike’s digital processing of the instruments as its own participant in the collective improvisation. The song is mostly about building tension and letting go of traditional musical roles. This last part can very much be heard in the way the guitar is playing a repetitive “groove” while the drums are going in and out of time, playing phrases almost like a melodic improviser on top of the rhythm. The tension grows, and you reach the breaking point. The ending of the track represents the feeling of going over and over, trying to figure out a way to move forward but only ending up back to the start again and again, and slowly moving towards insanity. As the aggression builds, the tension can be heard in the music.

7. Chaos I: Untelligence
The walls are collapsing. You are way past the breaking point, and from here you can just hang on and keep going in the new directions you are constantly getting thrown into. The second part takes you back to the opening riff, but the rhythm has changed. This time more like desperate breathing for air, or holding on to a moving train at full speed. The track is building and building the intensity towards the end, and the final hit marks the ending of the first half of “Materialism”.

8. Chaos I: Order
“Order” is the section dividing the pieces “Chaos” and “Lachrymator”. The track is written and performed by Mike McCormick and represents indexing of our toolbox: a quick scan revealing the refined sound design of contemporary electroacoustic music alongside the brutality of harsh noise and grindcore aesthetics.

9. Lachrymator II: Lignite
Lignite is the first section of the piece called Lachrymator. This song is best known among our fans as the part of the show where Simen goes into insane mode, smashing a drumstick onto his bass strings like it’s literally the end of the world. The first time he did this during rehearsal, it blew us all away. No distortion or overdrive effect could ever come close to the raw aggressiveness of the sound coming out of his amplifier while hitting the strings in this way. When we recorded the track, we even changed the drumstick for a screwdriver. The way that bass guitar grinds along with our two guitars in the opening is exactly the pure aggressive energy and rawness we seek in our heavy sound.

10. Lachrymator II: Erebus & Terror
“Erebus & Terror” takes the listener into a new section of open improvisation. This part is put together from live recordings of improvisations from the tour we did after the first release of Cement in the fall of 2020. Little did we know that we were actually recording our new record performing this piece of collective improvisation as a part of our live set for this tour. The piece is based on a dynamic duo-performance of Mike McCormick and Tarjei Lienig, and when this piece is being performed live the rest of the band goes off stage, leaving this communicative moment between the two musicians, performing synthesizer and live electronics.

11. Lachrymator II: Tripwire
A new direction in the soundscapes of the record. Introducing the albums second guitar solo performed by Mike, accompanied by the playful bassist Simen Wie. This section presents the band’s roots in various Jazz-traditions as well as a unique soundscape. The guitar solo weaves a melodic narrative across the irregular form, linking notes and rhythms like the rhyming couplets of a poem.

12. Lachrymator II: Unstoppable force
You wake up from a dream, and immediately being overwhelmed by stress, panic, and anxiety. The track starts off with a repetitive rhythmic pattern, building tension. The hard-hitting rhythmic playing keeps going by Torfinn, Oskar, and Simen, while the first section of Lachrymator’s melody comes back with a restored new energy in a panicked fashion, performed by Mike and Tarjei. Eventually, the tension is released, and we get the massive sound of Yawn chugging slower and slower, moving towards the end of the world in an unsymmetrical rhythmical loop, almost like its “lagging”.

13. Tokamak IV: Immovable Object
The last hit-off Lachrymator’s ending starts off the first section of the new piece called Tokamak, giving you the unique sound designs of Oskar Johnsen Rydh, combined with the lingering growl of Torfinn Lysne’s 8-string guitar. the piece starts off with a dramatic effect, building curiosity to what is to come. A clock is being introduced, but there is something off about it. It’s uneven in time, and it’s making its way into a rhythmical pattern. Slowly the piece builds, creating a soundscape reminding you of the first glimpse of the sun after a storm, leaving the question: “what comes now?”

14. Tokamak IV: Critical Mass
Critical Mass is the second part of the piece titled Tokamak. The track is mostly based on a repetitive guitar phrase going over and over, printing itself in your memory whether you want it or not. The melody was based on a simple conversation between Oskar and Torfinn: “Why do we limit our tonal language to the chromatic scale, dividing notes only down to the semitones? Why not dive into the world of quartertones?” A few guitar-tunings later, we ended up with this simple, but catchy melody going on and on in both our heads, the following week. The melody continues on throughout the piece called “Tokamak”.

15. Tokamak IV: Fluorescence & Entropy
Fluorescence & Entropy is the longest track of this record. Presenting yet another unique soundscape, this track is actually something you can dance to! Yawn’s drummer Oskar really brings the groove on this one. Being all kinds of weird in the terms of both harmony, melody, tonality and rhythm this track still possesses a catchy and playful character.  The track ends with an improvised soundscape slowly removing instrument after instrument. At the end of the track, Mike is the only one left, performing a soundscape of microtonal guitar chords in an atmospheric manner.

16. Tokamak IV: Confluence
You thought we were done? Yawn saves the most brutal for last! Tuning the eight-string guitars down to the C# and kicking in the ring-modulator, Confluence is the perfect ending to the musical journey through this record. Smashing through polyrhythmic patterns, giving you riffs tuned so low that they can cause earthquakes. We want to thank the listener for staying with us all through this record with one last bulldozer of a track.

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 3, 2022

Canadian Thrashers TYMO Streaming New Album “The Art Of A Maniac”

Stream Premiere via Sonic Perspectives

North American / EU Release Date Feb 5th

Japanese Release Date Feb 16th via Spiritual Beast (features exclusive bonus tracks)

Edmonton thrash attack TYMO will be unleashing their new album “The Art Of A Maniac” on February 5th for North America and Europe along with its Japanese release on February 16th via Spiritual Beast and before it officially drops, it can be heard in full via its stream premiere on SonicPerspectives HERE.

“The Art Of A Maniac” follows up 2017’s “Purge & Reset”, which had a more of a melodic thrash/heavy metal sound, whereas the new album is higher energy; the songs are faster, the riffs are heavier, and overall the music is much more technical. Very true to the thrash metal genre, excitedly, vocalist/guitarist Tim Tymo explains further:

“This record is a great representation of where we are at now! Playing live with other thrash bands such as Hazzerd and WMD have definitely influenced this record! It feels good to have finally written a full-on thrash album and it was good to take the extra time over the pandemic and make sure we were satisfied with everything! We pushed our speed and playing boundaries on this record, it’s really different from our last album. Any fans of thrash metal will definitely appreciate this record and we hope it’s added to their collection. It’s definitely our most aggressive and most focused record yet!”

Throughout “The Art Of A Maniac”, listeners will find a common theme of destruction and chaos, lyrically and musically as the album moves through very fast riffs, shreddy solos and thick angry vocals. TYMO touches on subjects of mental illness, alien invasion, civil conflicts, social media, substance abuse and the comedy of Rick & Morty. They are recommended for fans of Lich King, Municipal Waste and Exodus.

“The Art Of A Maniac” was mixed and mastered by Graham Smith at Atreus XO Studios along with the amazing album artwork created by Andrei Bouzikov (Vektor, Municipal Waste, Skeletonwitch, Toxic Holocaust).

“The Art Of A Maniac” will be available in North America and Europe on February 5th. The Japanese edition featuring two exclusive tracks will be released via Spiritual Beast on February 16th.

About:
“A golden shower of thrash metal!” Six words to sum up Tymo! A band whose attitude lives up to the title of their debut album “Purge & Reset”. Lead guitarist and vocalist Tim Tymo explains that the origin of the title is more than words; it is a statement of lost faith in humanity. “Let’s just say we have a creator or superior being. If this god gave up everything we needed to flourish and returned to see all the wars and corruption, it would want to wipe the slate clean and start over. Hence…PURGE AND RESET!

Formed in Edmonton in 2015, Tymo is comprised of Tim Tymo as the lead guitarist and vocalist, Nick Schwartz on rhythm guitar, Harlen Jacobs on bass, and Marc Durie on drums.

Tim Tymo describes the band’s sounds as “loud, angry, and explosive thrash”. Tymo has a serious mission to entertain their fans. “We love writing and performing, and we all share a common passion for thrash metal. We wanted to reference our heroes and mix up that inspiration with our own brew and see what we came up with, and here we are. We want to give people a source of inspiration and excitement!

Tymo’s debut album “Purge & Reset” was released in August of 2017 and Tymo performed shows in support of the album throughout 2018. The band returned to the studio in early 2019 to record a single entitled “Sanity Clause.” It was released in late 2019 with very positive reviews and sold-out shows! Due to Covid 19, the band spent much of 2020 in the studio recording their follow-up album to Purge & Reset!

As of 2021, Tymo performed at the Loud As Hell Festival 2021 and has finished recording their next full-on thrash album! Much faster and more aggressive than Purge & Reset. The album entitled “The Art of A Maniac” is planned to be released in 2022 and Tymo has a mission to expand its audience and dominate the world! Planning to tour Europe and many other countries.

Montreal, QC – February 2, 2022

Western Canada’s Largest Extreme Music Event Armstrong MetalFest Announces Its Return July 15/16

Watch the official video recap of AMF 2019 here.
(video created by Mayne Brand Productions)

Western Canada’s largest extreme music event, Armstrong MetalFest announces it will be returning in 2022 to host two days of live Canadian metal on July 15th and 16th in Armstrong, BC.

The 2020 and 2021 productions of the festival were cancelled due to the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. Following guidelines from British Columbia’s provincial government, Armstrong MetalFest is optimistic in presenting its 12th edition in 2022.

“We are pleased to announce that we are planning on having a festival this year! We are planning a similar event like years past, but depending on the Public Health Orders at the time of the festival may take a different physical form. We are working hard to solidify this year’s lineup, and we feel it will be just the light many of us need to look forward to! If everything works out we will be adding additional non-music events during the rest, as well as ramping up other events such as Thrash Wrestling! We are hoping to put presale tickets up for sale in March 2022.” add AMF festival organizers.

Ticket holders for AMF 2020 that were planning to use them for 2021 are asked to hold onto their tickets as they’ll be honoured for the choice of attending one of the next three years of the festival through 2022-2024. For more information, ticket holders can inquire by emailing – info[@]armstrongmetalfest[.]ca.

For more information about AMF‘s public health measures, restrictions and COVID-19 safety for its indoor live event and outdoor camping, the festival will be following the BC Centre For Disease Control’s guidelines, which can be found at the following link here.

Since 2009, West Metal Entertainment and Armstrong Metalfest has not only fostered the talent of hundreds of local bands but brought in well-known, international acts to the quiet, little Canadian town of Armstrong, British Columbia.

Each year up to 700 metalheads from Canada and the USA descend into the picturesque Okanagan Valley and under the blistering sun they spend three days camping, taking in over 30 bands, participating in wrestling events, and scavenger hunts and catching up with their metal family.

The festival has seen such renowned headliners as Kataklysm, Cattle Decapitation, Archspire, Nekrogoblikon, and Beyond Creation as well as emerging artists from across North America. At the end of the revelry, the festival disappears without a trace, leaving the landscape as pristine as it has always been.

West Metal Entertainment is a non-profit society that not only puts on Armstrong Metal Festival every year in Armstrong, B.C., but gives bands opportunities to play different venues throughout the region including all-ages shows, to encourage musical passion in kids as well as adults.

EPK – Day of Departure – Self-Titled (2022)

Album Title: Day of Departure

Label: Bravemusic
Distribution: Bravemusic

DayofDeparture.bandcamp.com | Spotify | Apple Music

“The album is intended to take the listener on a journey from utter destruction and despair to a place where there is a new consciousness and reality that will break this unending cycle. The music is intended to provide a wide range of dynamics and atmospheres to elicit an understanding and a vibe for where the listener is within the narrative.  The music aims to juxtapose intense sonic blasting with lush and serene atmospheres” – Day of Departure

“I found this album to be exactly how it was advertised. Several styles are reflected here, with about as many different emotions as the human being can go through. It’s very personal journey, with thoughtful ponderings around every turn. Let yourself get swept away into their world, full of dark visions and figures, but with just enough light that you will go forward and not turn back. Embrace your future, for it is the only one you have. 9/10” – Metal Temple

“Welcome to the world of Matt Kozar and Day of Departure. Buckle up, as he takes you on an eventful journey of wonder and fascination, with his expansive, ambitious new album.” – V13

“Led by guitarist Matt Kozar (Brave) and singer Michelle Schrotz, Day Of Departure is an expansive, almost cinematic experience, with songs ranging from rockers (“Pierce the Sky (Conflict)”) to ambient tracks (“The Future Has No Form”). Schrotz’s voice adds an ethereal quality to some of the songs.. Overall this is a very interesting debut, fun to listen to, and a great first step for Day Of Departure.” – Heavy Music Headquarters

“A beautiful opus” – Rock n Force

“Undoubtedly a complex album full of quality in all aspects, highly recommended.” – Dark Metal Divas

“It’s very seldom that I am speechless and Day of Departure absolutely took my breath away. The music of Day of Departure can only be described as tragically beautiful. It encapsulates a vast plane of musical influences from Italian metal icons Lacuna Coil to the lush, dark melody of Norwegian black metal legends Darkthrone. Day of Departure delivers an apocalyptic message to the world that the world we take for granted may be closer to its end than we know and that we humans may be living on borrowed time. Day of Departure presents humanity with a powerful testimony to our mortality as human beings. It is a message that not everyone can deliver or even swallow, but Day of Departure is sharing a message with us all that is more than worthy of a listen.”  – Southeast of Heaven

“In the end, it is not in the destination but, in the journey and self-discovery. Not only does this album tell a visually stunning story, it opens our minds to our own questions and discoveries, allowing us to explore what we may simply come to ignore as we stagnate our growth and opportunities to thrive. Musically complex, Days of Departure have truly created an album that not only visually stuns, but takes songwriting, and musical prowess to new, unimaginable heights.” – Metal Goddesses

“What an ingenious idea it is, to set up a group of musicians, seemingly trading as cooperative. With the unique idea of having the flexibility to morph into different bands under the dictates of alternate musicians who have developed their own separate projects. In this case, it is ‘Brave, guitarist ‘Matt Kozar who has put together a fascinating suite of atmospheric well-considered ambient progressive music.” – House of Prog

“if you just want to chill out with the fireplace and a glass of red wine in hand, then ‘Day Of Departure’ is a great soundtrack.” – Arrow Lords of Metal

“Modulating between more abrasive, noisy verses and extended, echoing guitar breaks, Day of Departure, part of the BraveMusic collective, seem to have located their sound somewhere between the intricate art rock of Tool and the straightforward energy of Lacuna Coil.” – Alchemical Records

“DC progressive metal veterans Brave have announced another project to be released under the “Bravemusic” umbrella.  The project is called Day of Departure and this marks the 2nd break-off project, the first being guitarist Scott Loose’s Stellar Death project.  Day of Departure is the brainchild of Brave guitarist Matt Kozar and the first single release, “And We Prepare For Our End” features Brave vocalist/keyboardist Michelle Schrotz along with other fellow Brave members drummer Trevor Schrotz, bassist Ben Kelly, and guitarist Scott Loose. “And We Prepare For Our End” is a departure (pun intended) from the sound of Brave which is a cool thing to hear.  While the song maintains a progressive feel to it, I also hear a song that is infused with elements of goth, tribal rhythms, and even a bit of early “Comalies” era Lacuna Coil influence.” –  Southeast of Heaven

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS:
1. Day of Departure is heavily influenced by a number of different sci-fi stories and comics. Matt Kozar is an avid reader of all comics and looks forward to listeners funding subtle nods to comics throughout the lyrics.

2. The members of Day of Departure produced and recorded the album over the last 2 years completely remotely.  We hope to gather and rehearse these songs sometime in 2022, but have never played these songs as a group, which is a first for all of the projects that we collaborated on.

Day of Departure combines elements of post-rock, ambient, progressive rock, and hard rock to arrive at a unique sonic landscape that seeks to balance the varied influences and inspirations from its creators.

Born out of a desire to explore a different musical style that merges their influences with a well-woven narrative, Washington D.C.’s Day of Departure created a story that begins with the destruction of our planet, and then the need to evolve and find a new path forward for survival. They are heavily influenced by a number of different sci-fi stories and comics that echo throughout their music.

Their debut self-titled album is set to be released on March 25, 2022. It was produced and recorded entirely remotely over two years with none of the members working together in person. They currently do not have any plans to play live at the moment, but are looking forward to thinking about how to bring to life the music and vibe that was created on the record.

While writing their debut, several songs didn’t make the cut, yet Day of Departure are already thinking about the next chapter to explore, with some of those songs/ideas being the inspiration or perhaps even the focus of forthcoming music.

Fall Of Stasis has been making its name known in the Montreal metal scene since they first stepped on a stage in 2017. A formidable blend of symphonics, black metal, prog and even a bit of folk, the band weaves an eclectic tapestry that will entice a wide variety of listeners.

The single “Baal Arise” describes a demon’s awakening and his wish to enslave humanity. This is a short, fast-paced, “in-your-face” type of song that starts off with a brutal death metal riff followed by an epic chorus. The band explains in further detail:

“This song was almost entirely written by Tristan, although it’s been fine-tuned and improved thanks to the band’s creative input. This song is short and very aggressive, and for that reason, we feel like it is very effective in grabbing the attention of our target audience. It was inspired by old-school metal songs that usually delve into satanic themes. We also felt like the storytelling was interesting and well-suited for a lyric video.”

It is apparent throughout the 50-minute album that a lot of effort was put into it, each song that was included was carefully picked to pique the listener’s interest and showcase the band‘s songwriting abilities. Overall, it is a melting pot of each band member’s musical tastes and influences, which makes for a pretty varied repertoire, ranging from smooth and melancholic ballads to aggressive and fast metal riffs. This gives them somewhat of an “apocalyptic” sound, something that is also reflected in most of the lyrics.

Metalheads looking for something brutal, eclectic, and original especially those with an interest in Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Black Dahlia Murder and Unexpect will likely enjoy Fall of Stasis.

About:
Fall Of Stasis, based in Montreal, Canada, was originally formed in 2014 with the intention of creating original music that couldn’t be defined by a specific genre. They started off with a very eclectic and progressive style, and as time went on, it was toned down in favour of musical cohesion and they added symphonic arrangements.

In 2017, the band released their demo and will be following it up in 2022 with the full-length “The Chronophagist”, which maneuvers closer to black metal but with definitive prog-heavy stylings. Working together on everything, there isn’t a single song where the creative input from a band member has not been blended into the mix. Fall of Stasis firmly believes that creative collaboration is one of their main strengths.

The current lineup of Fall of Stasis consists of Jessica Dupré (vocals), Gabriel Bernier (lead guitar/backing vocals), Tristan Bergeron-Boucher (rhythm guitar), Mathieu Groulx (bass), Sergei Lecours (drums) and Mélissa Bissonnette (keyboard). Each of the musicians brings a wide array of influences which results in a distinct sound, which caters to folk, black, progressive and death metal fans alike, but also to the uninitiated, thanks to their original and catchy melodies.

Symphonic yet brutal and often unpredictable, they present a mix of very powerful growls and clean vocals, along with good stage presence, efficient crowd work and tight musicianship. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many notable local and international bands such as The Agonist, Wolfheart and Beyond Creation.

Canadian thrashers HYPERIA, formerly of Calgary, AB, now residing in Vancouver, BC will be self-releasing their new album “Silhouettes of Horror” this coming March 2022. The full-length follows their 2020’s “Insanitorium” unleashed via Sliptrick Records and their 2019 EP “Fish Creek Frenzy”.

Today, in preview to the record, Hyperia is sharing their second single “Experiment 77”, a song about a government experiment that actually happened in Kentucky in 1954 where a prison doctor isolated inmates and fed them “double, triple and quadruple” doses of LSD for 77 days straight. Musically, the track starts with a single guitar riff that soon erupts into a heavy double kick run. The song has a lengthy C-Section with harmonized guitar solos, neo-classical melodies as well as 2 bass solos.

Listen to “Experiment 77” at https://youtu.be/d52c9_KL9AY

Hyperia‘s forthcoming second album “Silhouettes of Horror” sees guitarist Colin Ryley behind the soundboard producing and mixing the record with mastering done by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Finland (Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Battle Beast). Album artwork was created by Andrei Bouzikov (Vektor, Municipal Waste, Skeletonwitch, Toxic Holocaust).

“We think that we have polished our sound and pushed ourselves to create what we believe is a newly refined vision. This record has pushed the whole band to their limits, and the songwriting, performance, and production value is a huge step up. We feel the fans will enjoy this new album even more than our first full-length,” adds Collin Ryley.

Energetic, melodic, fast, psychotic, and dynamic are the elements that make “Silhouettes of Horror” that old and new fans of thrash, NWOBHM, and power metal will appreciate. The band even included a cover hommage of Abba’s “Gimme Gimme Gimme”. For the recording of “Silhouettes of Horror”, Hyperia also recruited good friend and session drummer Gord Alexander (Tessitura, Tides of Kharon, Immunize).

Most of the lyrical themes on “Silhouettes of Horror” revolve around inhumane government experiments, sleep disorders, and night terrors.

“Silhouettes of Horror” is due out on March 18, 2022 and is recommended for fans of Exmortus, Arch Enemy, Unleash the Archers, Havok.

About:
HYPERIA (originally from Calgary, AB now based in Vancouver, BC) is a Melodic Thrash Metal band known for their wailing vocals, shredding guitars, and fast, heavy music. Formed by Colin and Marlee Ryley in September 2018, they found 3 members from the local metal community and hit the ground running. Since the release of their debut EP “FISH CREEK FRENZY” in 2019, HYPERIA has been thrashing venues and taking the Western Canadian metal community by storm.

In April 2019, HYPERIA announced their signing SLIPTRICK RECORDS, who released their debut full-length album “INSANITORIUM” in January 2020. The band celebrated their release to a 300 person sold-out show in their hometown of Calgary, Canada.

Later that year, the band announced the departure of their previous drummer Jordan Maguire, while at the same time revealing the commencement of their second record “SILHOUETTES OF HORROR” with session drummer Gord Alexander (Tessitura, Tides of Kharon, Immunize). The album was completed in June 2021 and is due out in March 2022.

=====

“If you prefer your metal loud, dark and just a touch campy (and who doesn’t?), then Calgary-turned-Vancouver rockers Hyperia are planning to deliver with Silhouettes of Horror, the follow-up to 2020’s equally furious and equally fun Insanitorium. First single “Operation Midnight” is an unrelenting barrage of riffage held down by Marlee Ryley’s throat-blistering vocals.” – Exclaim!

Insanitorium – #18 on Top 20 – February 2020 – Canadian College Radio Loud Charts (source: Earshot)

“Insanitorium will get the blood flow going and cause massive pit eruption when Hyperia tear up the stage and that’s what the best thrash of any kind should achieve. Keeping their eyes on the prize with creative flourishes in a brief two-year window since forming, the future looks very bright for these Canadians as more people flock to the band’s addictive, pounding style” – DEAD RHETORIC

“Unhinged and unconfinable, Hyperia may throw a lot and we mean a lot of ideas at the wall in the hope that they stick but in the end, it’s their scattershot approach and fearless demeanor which makes them so damn appealing!” – WORSHIP METAL’S 2020 “10 THRASH METAL ALBUMS YOU HAD TO HEAR IN JANUARY”

0 Rockshots Records Signs Theigns & Thralls (Skyclad) For Self-Titled Debut Album ft. Guests From Korpiklaani, Ensiferum And More!

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 1, 2022

Rockshots Records Signs Theigns & Thralls For Self-Titled Debut Album ft. Guests From Korpiklaani, Ensiferum And More!

Rockshots Records is proud to announce their latest signing of Theigns & Thralls for the release of their self-titled debut album due out April 8, 2022.

Theigns & Thralls is the brainchild of Skyclad vocalist and songwriter Kevin Ridley. Originally, it was intended to be an ‘occasional band’ to perform songs from Ridley’s back catalogue of songs from Skyclad and his solo album while working around Skyclad’s touring plans. However, when the 2020 global pandemic struck, his plans changed. Being stuck in lockdown, the project became a collaborative recording project building on a few demo ideas. At first, musician friends were contacted to add a bit of violin here and a whistle there. But then things gathered momentum and friends of friends were also asked and players across Europe joined to contribute. The response was, to say the least, overwhelmingly positive and, in the end, twenty-five musicians from bands such as Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Cruachan, Waylander, Celtibeerian and Metal De Facto as well as solo musicians (new and old acquaintances of Ridley) contributed everything from drums, bass, guitar, violin, whistles, bagpipes to hurdy gurdy and vocals.

“I think that, because of lot of the album was written and recorded in a fairly short space of time, there is certain feel and continuity to it. There is a blend of Celtic Speed-Punk, Folk-Metal and Classic Rock influences. Added to that, in terms of lyrical content, there is a strong appreciation of history, literature and humanism that comes together.” adds Ridley.

The name Theigns & Thralls (which basically means masters and servants) was settled on and it was also decided to make an eponymous album so that Theigns & Thralls was the band’s name, the name of the album, and the name of one of the songs. This was to help clarify the band’s ’mission’ or ‘raison d’etre’.

As well as putting out the album and videos, the next phase of the band’s evolution will be to put together a ‘touring band’ when permitted, not only to do what was originally intended, but also to perform the new original songs – perhaps with a few guest artist appearances – and to become a force in their own right.

Theigns & Thralls is recommended for fans of Skyclad, Cruachan, Fiddlers Green, Flogging Molly, and Volbeat.

Theigns & Thralls is:
Kevin Ridley (Skyclad). vocals, guitar and mandola
John Ryan (ex-Cruachan), violin, Cello and backing vocals
Dave Briggs (Waylander), guitar, whistles and backing vocals
Arjon Valk, bass and backing vocals
Mike Verhof, drums

Canada’s Idol of Fear have been casting darkness since 2011 and have released two full-lengths since then. They are now releasing their third album “Trespasser” in March 2022 and the first glimpse into the aggressive and brooding LP is the single “Cheirotonia“.

Citing that it is their most powerful and cohesive album to date, Idol of Fear anticipates that listeners will hear a clear progression from their previous work and might be taken aback. They expect that it will come out of nowhere for many. The explain the single:

“Opening with a chant from Pavel Chesnokov ‘Let My Prayer Arise’, “Cheirotonia” was largely inspired by our own process of drawing upon the heavy darkness that continually creeps in the periphery of our lives outside the band. In that sense, it is perhaps one of the more introspective/personal songs on a largely cryptic album. Musically it flows like the river Styx, gliding as a spectre, with winding tragic melodies that seek to haunt, and strong driving rhythms that propel its bitter delivery.”

Musically, the single is tragic while carrying an air of mystery. Pessimistic, bold and refined lyrics set a darkly invigorating mood, bitter and somewhat sarcastic, but also triumphant and empowering, maintaining the mysterious atmosphere of the music.

Idol of Fear formed out of a necessity to make something of the darkness that swirls around us all. They’ve made music together for a very long time now – what you hear is the result of many years spent shaping their approach. It is not work they approach lightly.

Dark and chilling, “Trespasser” is recommended for fans of Behemoth, Shining and Deathspell Omega.

“Cheirotonia” can be heard via its premiere on NoCleanSinging HERE.

“Trespasser” will be released on March 11, 2021 via the band’s own label Somnolence Productions.

About:
A heavy darkness from Canada who have been stalking the unlit horizon since 2011, Idol of Fear is undeniable, undefinable. Formed out of a necessity to make something out of the gloom that swirls around us all, Idol of Fear has been making music together for a very long time now and dedicated themselves to honing their craft, as it is work that they do not approach lightly.

Thus far, Idol of Fear have released two full-lengths, “All Sights Affixed, Ablaze” (2014) and “Grave Aperture” (2018). A third, “Trespasser” will come out in 2022. All contributing ideas to the creative process, Idol of Fear tracked the first two albums themselves and tend to write new material by recording as opposed to jamming it out. Every lyric relates to a personal experience, but oftentimes certain elements seem to make their way through dreams and other nebulous connection points.

When playing live, some songs are re-arranged in order to be properly executed, but for the most part Idol of Fear recreates the atmosphere that their recorded material projects – with the extra ferocity of course.

Out Now! Rockshots Records – Neo-Classical Power Metal SARTORI Debut Album “Dragon’s Fire”

Out now as of January 28th, Rockshots Records release the debut album from SARTORI entitled “Dragon’s Fire”. The epic full length is nine tracks of neo-classical power metal that are melodic, technical, and progressive. Led by main composer and guitarist Andy Sartori, with vocalist Scott Board, drummer Dino Castano and bassist Rod Viquez, the band sets the mood for something more than just singing over music.

With grandiose instrumentals and heroic vocals, Sartori creates complex, melodic tunes that command attention. They are heavily influenced by classical baroque music, so the band stands as the symphony behind Andy Sartori as the ‘maestro’. What sets these guys apart from other bands is their music composition. Andy Sartori explains further:

“We use a lot of arrangements that you won’t find any other bands doing. Lots of vocals, lots of guitar quartets, duets, and harmony arrangements. My writing is based on positive vibes, positive lyric content, no criticism, no anger, and I write sometimes about spiritual content in the matter of being a better human and about life experiences, personal and in general along with influence from movies and stories I enjoy… sometimes.”
