Breaking the mold of traditional musical experiences, Ivy Gardens unleashes a belligerent musical atmosphere punctuated with sweat, sludge, and grunge. In 2021, Ivy Gardens embarked on a mission to create an album that mirrors their electrifying live performances—a fusion of relentless energy, unexpected surprises, and a euphoric climax. Their new album “Goon” is out now and it will take listeners on a journey through unexpected twists and turns. The band comments on the album:

“The time has finally come to release our baby into the world. A crazed, feral infant frothing at the mouth. A year in the making, this is our record, our voice. While our self-titled debut served as a mission statement, this follow-up takes things to a whole new level and we can’t wait to get in your ears. We consider Goon to be a historical document. At a particular point in space and time, somewhere in a sweaty basement in Southern Ontario, we achieved a sound. Sonic belligerence, and euphoria through volume.”

Since their first self-titled EP, Ivy Gardens has got bigger amps and tuned their guitars lower. They’ve written faster songs, they’ve written heavier songs. And then they hammered them out across Ontario and the east coast of Canada until they were beaten into shape.

“Goon” was mixed by Joe Zandwyk, mastered by Audrey Leyenhorst and the album artwork was done by Sebastian Hogg. Ivy Gardens operates under a golden rule: the “dollar to decibel ratio”. They almost exclusively use old junk amplifiers and speaker cabs. Old Peavey garbage, fished from some old fart’s garage jam space, is not only the secret sauce in their sound, but also the only possible way for them to accomplish the task of CRUSHING volume under a budget of $0.

“Goon” is a rip-roaring good time, and it can be experienced now on digital format as well as live during their upcoming tour dates (listed below). Those who enjoy Soundgarden, Kyuss, and Truckfighters should take note.

“…the sonic equivalent of a panic attack.” – Canadian Beats

““Boner” has got a really cool groove, too, showing you what can happen when you’ve got a band that is truly possessed by the power of The Riff. It’s one of those grinding, motoriffic jobs in the spirit of Kyuss’ “Green Machine.” And it doesn’t take long before we, too, are caught under its sway. The retro organ sound from the keys provides a spooky touch to the chorus, which comes like a sigh of relief after the tense build-up of those guitar-driven verses. The drumming is swarmy and frenetic, and strikes with power at pivotal moments. The breakdown at 4 minutes is a headbanging oasis, made even cooler with the synthesizer’s late-’60s garage twist.” – Doomed and Stoned

“This Canadian trio are promising us a debut album that is “a relentless onslaught of vulgar, belligerent punk, sludge and sweat” when it is released in April. If this lead single is anything to go by, things are going to get very belligerent and sweaty when the full-lengther finally hits our death decks.” – Uber Rock

“GOON is an action packed and turbocharged release powered by Pissed Off grooves and a snarling Punk Rock Attitude which allows IVY GARDENS to deliver a devastating FREAKY slice of Psychedelic Sludge/Stoner Metal.” – Outlaws of The Sun

0 Rockshots Records – VICTORIA K Releases Enchanting Cover of Madonna’s ‘Frozen’

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 19, 2024

VICTORIA K Releases Enchanting Cover of Madonna’s ‘Frozen’

Melbourne Gothic Metal powerhouse Victoria K have recorded their own heavy rendition of Madonna’s iconic 1998 ballad, ‘Frozen.’ Victoria K brings their dark and tenebrous stylings to the classic with heavy riffs and the judicious incorporation of harsh vocals, while at the same time paying tribute to the soulful and introspective nature of the song with more dulcet moments led by frontwoman Victoria Knight’s hypnotic voice.

Reflecting on the journey of recording the song, Knight reveals, “’Frozen’ is one of my favourite Madonna tracks, I’m so excited to be breathing new life into the song.”

She continues, “We’re hoping that with this cover, we can bring a new and fresh sound to Victoria K.” Fans can indeed look forward to a bigger Victoria K sound than ever, as ‘Frozen’ is mixed and mastered by the deft hand of Lance Prenc, whose work includes some of Australia’s biggest heavy acts such as Alpha Wolf, Thornhill and Void of Vision.

Victoria K exploded into the minds and ears of Australian audiences with their 2019 hometown support of Swedish Folk Metal legends, Eluveitie. The band then took the Gothic Metal world by storm with the release of their debut album, Essentia. Although the now-infamous 2020 pandemic struck on the eve of their first headline show as the world entered lockdown, Victoria K was undeterred by this setback. While touring was off the cards, the band embraced the opportunity to deliver a live-streamed show direct from the studio where Essentia was recorded, providing a beacon of Gothic celebration in the darkest of times. The show is now available as the Essentia – Live Isolation Concert DVD.

Since the world’s emergence from the pandemic, Victoria K has hit the road in earnest, touring Australia in support of Essentia and their 2022 follow-up, Kore. Kore exponentially expands the beguiling soundscape of Essentia as Knight sonically explores the mythology of her Greek heritage. In addition to Knight’s majestic lead vocals, Victoria K’s current touring line-up includes Charlie Curnow tearing up the stage on harsh vocals, Adyn Young leading the melodic charge on guitar, Ethan Colussi holding down the bottom end on bass, and the indomitable percussive machine of James Davies on drums.

‘Frozen’ is available on all the digital platforms at https://victoriak.lnk.to/frozen

“I have always loved a good concept album being a Prog head at heart and there are lots of progressive metal records floating around the constant stream of modern metal. But for me, none so well produced, performed and as inspired as this one. If you’re looking to dip your toes into the waters of concept albums this is most defiantly the one to try. It’s not dry or heavy going like some and you don’t need to have a degree in Astrophysics to enjoy it. Long gone the image of thick-rimmed glassed music professors in flares noodling around in impossible time signatures. Now there is new blood, new energy and WHAT a voice, it truly has left me with goosebumps. This young talent from Melbourne Australia is really going places. And I for one will be really keen to see quite how far she can go.” (Kore) – Metal Roos

“a really enjoyable record (Kore)” – Sentinel Daily

“Victoria K. are refreshingly different and very profound on “Kore”. Symphonic Metal gets a breath of fresh air here, both lyrically and musically.” (Kore) – Dark Divas

““A Divine Revelation”, is one of my favorites off this album. Victoria’s depth of character and love for this story can be felt with every note she sings. She is “alive” in this story as if it were real. You can feel it in her vocal delivery. So much time and effort was put into delivering the lyrics and story in just the right way. I take my hat off to her and the band for trying to bring such a powerful story to life with music. She sings in Greek to add to the authenticity of this masterpiece.” (Kore) – Progressive Rock Central

“How nice it is that the power in her voice does not decrease, but increases. No high warbling but pure power. Just listen to ‘A Divine Revelation’ for example. Do you like bands with their own sound and who know how to bring something new? Then put this on.” (Kore) – Arrow Lords of Metal

“Lovers of symphonic metal listen up… because Victoria K is about to put Australia on the map.” – Heavy Magazine

Japan’s IMPENDING ANNIHILATION Bring A Barrage Of Technical Death Metal In “Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head”

Technical prowess and a barrage of speed come for you in the new two-track EP “Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head” from Japan’s Impending Annihilation, out on April 19, 2024, on Gore House Productions. This onslaught of technical death metal leaves no survivors and pushes the boundaries of the genre. The band comments on this release:

“These songs represent the pinnacle of technical death metal for us. We wanted to create something that truly stood out in the genre, and so we crafted these tracks with a focus on rapid, intense instrumentation that utilizes super extended-range guitars and fretless bass. It’s an example of musical instrument work that will surely shock listeners.”

With the overarching goal of perpetual motion in mind, Impending Annihilation has crafted a sonic experience that refuses to stand still. Describing their vocal approach, vocalist Horizon points out that they don’t adhere to traditional lyricism in their music. Instead, they view vocals as instruments themselves, using growls and gutturals in the same way one would incorporate sweeps and tappings into a song structure.

Impending Annihilation strives to deliver performances that captivate and intrigue. Their compositions aim to defy common structures, embodying the essence of technical death metal while embracing the perpetual motion of their musical vision.

Blasting onward at an unyielding pace, full of strangeness and fury, “Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head” is innovative and impressive. It is recommended for fans of Monumental Torment, Archspire, and Entrails Eradicated.

“These songs used a super extended range guitar/bass or a fretless bass. There are not many songs that use these unusual instruments. This example of musical instrument work will surely shock you. When someone gets an instrument with a lot of strings, it’s hard to figure out what it can play because it’s a newly designed instrument. For this reason, many people stop playing just by hitting the thick strings. When you listen to our songs, you’ll want to use all the strings.” – (Kei) – Impending Annihilation

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

The goal written on the score is Perpetuum mobile. In English, this is perpetual motion, a musical term that refers to music that is constantly in motion. Both songs continue to play at high speed without stopping. (Kei)

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

1. Rapidly Destructive Coxarthropathy – For this song, I used a 7-string fretless bass. Fretless basses are often used in technical death metal, but rarely in unison with the guitarist’s sweep. It is often played slowly and elegantly with vibrato and portamento. But I wanted a quick and dirty sweep. (Kei)

2. Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head – This song used a 10-string guitar and an 11-string bass. Many of these guitar and bass performances with many strings are uploaded to YouTube. However, it is rare to use all the strings from end to end in one phrase. After hitting a low note, play a possible phrase on a six-string instrument. I wanted to see a piece of music that would be impossible without 10 or 11 strings. So I decided to make it myself. (Kei)

BAND FUN FACTS – STORY ANGLES

The band photo was taken during a private trip, which was originally to see reptiles. However, IxAx, who had been on hiatus, began making concrete steps toward reactivating from that day on. The location of mountains and waterfalls gives you the feel of a band photo.

“Genocidal Nemesis” Out April 19th, 2024

Opium Death is a brutal concoction of extreme metal, sent forth from the suburbs of Chicago, USA to lay waste to metalheads around the world with their first full-length album “Genocidal Nemesis”, which is being unleashed on April 19th. The band comments on the connection between the music and the lyrics:

“Lyrics and music go hand in hand. So far we noticed that as we wrote a majority of the lyrics last, the tonality of the songs and how they flow from beginning to end definitely had us think of certain sentences or phrases to be sung in a relative and consistent manner with the chords and rhythm. Or the lyrics can give off such a feeling of tension or melancholy or whatever that the music now has to serve that purpose or it may feel disjointed if not thought out very well.”

The album features a diverse range of tracks, each offering a unique sonic experience while maintaining Opium Death‘s signature heavy sound. From the blistering aggression of “Genocidal Nemesis I: Fear” to the haunting melodies of “Shattered” to their latest single “Ozymandias” being offered before the album officially drops, all promise to leave a lasting impact on listeners.

“Ozymandias is about pride and wrath and the importance of keeping them in check during your life against the inevitable decay of information over time. One of our longest songs on the album, we felt it was a track that could benefit from utilizing exotic scales and vocal layering as it comes up later in the song to bring up this sense of immortality to a concept that will forever be ingrained in our human ego.”

Coming from different musical backgrounds, each band member shapes their perception and interpretation of heavy metal. With “Genocidal Nemesis”, they’ve embraced their diverse influences to create an album that defies expectations and pushes the boundaries of the genre. It is recommended for fans of Dying Fetus, Death, and Gojira.

“It’s an angry album, focused on hubris and its role in the downfall of humankind. The album’s cover art itself draws on this theme…. The band explain that “The Condemned” isn’t really a new song, since they’ve been playing it since 2017, but it’s been re-recorded, remixed, and remastered, and tweaked to bring it more in line with their current sound. The result is a track that’s ugly, mutilating, and rabidly murderous — it shows not even a whisper of mercy to the condemned, and eventually it revels in the delirious slaughtering it metes out.” – No Clean Singing

“Death metal with a pinch of everything… melting pot “ of many sub-genres comes out. You can find quick and rough on the album Death metal, mixed with influences from the Black Metal, Prog and that Thrash the eighties. With vocals reminiscent of Deicide and Cannibal Corpse and the various influences, there is at least one song for every death metal fan that appeals to them.” – Moshpit Passion

“Opium Death is a brutal concoction of extreme metal, sent forth from the suburbs of Chicago, USA to lay waste to metalheads around the world with their first full-length album Genocidal Nemesis. The album delivers a lot of variety in terms of tempo dynamics, song structure flow, lyrical themes, and overall, a different experience with each track while maintaining a heavy sound throughout. The Condemned is a track that’s ugly, mutilating, and rabidly murderous — showing no mercy and reveling in the slaughtering. The band erupts on Vesuvius – a very nice blend of thrash and death metal a breakdown that constructs the the disaster.” – WRUV 90.1 FM – Burlington, VT

The Order of The Precious Blood, a progressive hardcore punk force from St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada is releasing their second single this year “Black Hole” following the intense “Cheaper But Will Do”. These two sides of the same coin come in rapid succession, showcase the band’s versatility, and serve to whet the listener’s palettes for a teased EP. While the former reveals the band’s ability to find order in chaos, the latter demonstrates their prowess in orchestrating large and epic sections without compromising aggression or musicality. The songs signify a maturity in songwriting as the band crystallizes their ideas and finds new ways to blend their diverse influences. The comment on what’s in store:

“Black Hole is a song that began a long time ago as just a small idea and had to have the right group of musicians to really bring it to life. This was one of two songs we wrote together during the spring/early summer of 2023 in our first year as a band and we wanted to dip our toes into writing as an entire group. The song is a little more of an emotional nature and it deals with some personal things, but in a broad sense it’s about being dragged into a black hole in your life despite your best efforts to save yourself from that very fate.”

Musically, “Black Hole” kicks off with a hardcore groove that transforms into an enormous burst of punishing, explosive, dissonant drops, propelling listeners into the depths of hell at breakneck speed. Unhinged screams from a hellish sermon break through the cries of a million angels. The lyrics vividly describe the road leading into the fire of hell, dragged against one’s will through a black hole that had been vehemently avoided.

“Black Hole” offers a more emotional listening experience compared to the band’s previous work. The instrumentation and overall sound remain aggressive and heavy, flaunting black metal and hardcore influences, yet retaining a bright spot of melody that leads the listener back into the depths of despair. It is recommended for fans of Every Time I Die, Code Orange, and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

“From the rocky shores of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada comes a blood ceremony, an unholy sacrament of the wicked riff. The Order of the Precious Blood congregates to bask in the red glow and immense power of heavy fucking metal” – Decibel Magazine

“I’m downright flabbergasted by the quality of this EP. I’ve come back to it time and time again. It’s got a distinct sound, it’s got variety, it’s got great songwriting, and top of the line production. If this is what The Order of the Precious Blood is starting out with then consider me a devout follower of the cult. I can’t wait to hear what these guys produce next. Yellowknife’s GNARWHAL Look Inwards With Provocative Title Track From Upcoming EP “Altered States” Out May 2024

Gnarwhal, the genre-bending rock phenomenon hailing from the remote northern Canadian city of Yellowknife, continues to captivate audiences with the release of their latest single, the title track from their upcoming album “Altered States”. The single is out now and the remainder of the fuzzy, doomy album is being released on May 24, 2024. The emotionally charged track offers a profound exploration of resilience and memory, weaving together intricate melodies and haunting lyrics that resonate with listeners on a deep and personal level. The band comments on the creation of the track:

“Altered States is interesting because when we went into the studio we hadn’t even fleshed the song out and it wasn’t near complete. Mark hadn’t finalized the vocal melody or lyrics and structurally the song wasn’t making a lot of sense. We were actually a bit tentative about including this in our studio time and having it on the EP. It was the last song we tracked. Once Layne laid down the drum tracks and we started working on bass and guitar, we knew we were onto something a bit different and cool.”

“Altered States” delves into themes of personal transformation and the enduring power of memory. The track serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing our past experiences, even as we navigate the uncertainties of the present. The upcoming EP promises to deliver a diverse and introspective musical journey in which the band artfully navigates the realms of heavy alternative fuzz rock and progressive metal, creating a sound that is uniquely their own.

Powerful and personal, the single “Altered States” invites the listener to look inward. It is recommended for fans of Kyuss, Mastodon, and Elder.

“Gnarwhal moves along at its own Fuzzed Out Stoner pace with its style of Hard Rock and slightly Doom tinged grooves. Taking cues from bands such as Mastodon, The Sword, Elder and King Buffalo, these guys walk a fine line between Classic and Modern day Stoner sensibilities especially with the Proggy Spaced out vibes. There’s a HEAVY METAL beast waiting to escape from the cleaner grooves that Gnarwhal plays and when it does escape from its cage, Gnarwhal becomes a more exciting creative unit.” – Outlaws of the Sun

““Tides,” a brutal, stormy track that meshes fuzzy, downtuned vibes with unrelenting proggy rhythms. Forlorn vocals that seem to prophesy the inevitable collapse of civilization, as illustrated by the single art.” – Doomed And Stoned
