Making their first Toronto appearances at Indie Week on October 16th and Pinktober 5.0 on October 17th, Edmonton, AB’s Van Halst is a fierce, empowering force of hard rock fused with metal.  A project, which began as a solo artist for whom the band is named after — Kami Van Halst, has since become a full group producing socially conscious, lyrical tracks that focus on disenfranchised and marginalized populations.
“We could not be more excited to take part at Indie Week because it’ll be our first opportunity to perform for new fans and industry professionals who are not located in nor frequent Alberta. We cannot wait to showcase our new material and spread the message behind our music. We are also very honoured to have been selected to perform for Pinktober 5.0 at the Hard Rock Cafe. This show is a breast cancer fundraiser and brings together women who rock, we believe it is important to lend our talents to the cause and help raise funds to further cancer research.” comments vocalist and front woman Kami Van Halst.

Their appearances in Toronto comes with a special treat for those in attendance as the band will be performing unheard tracks from their upcoming album ‘The World of Make Believe’ due out in early 2016. The first single from that album ‘Save Me’ is set to be unleashed on October 2nd via iTunes.
Show Details:
October 16 – The Rivoli – Set time 9pm.
October 16 – Coalition Bar – Set time 12:45pm – Event info here.
October 17 – The Hard Rock Cafe for Pinktober 5.0 Set time 10:30pm  *** all ages – Event info here.
More about Van Halst:
The band’s influences stay true to goth rock, Kami Van Halst demonstrates an agile vocal delivery in combination with pummelling growls. Lyrically, the band draws from black metal due to its focus on people suffering from isolation and rising to overcome the preconceptions of a judgemental society. In This Moment’s industrial fusion remains a primary influence for Van Halst, employing a sampler, synthesizer, and distorted vocals.
Kami Van Halst dominates as the vocalist performing both growls and soaring vocals (Surviving Suzanne), Scott Greene (Derina Harvey Band/Dirty Pool) and Strathon J. Bajowsky (Havok Way) craft the guitar work while Brendan McMillan (bass) (My Darkest Days) and Brett Seaton (drums) (Cultured by Fire) drive the rhythm section of the band. Kami’s range and virtuosic vocal ability always captivates an audience and her attitude on stage truly delivers the meaning behind the songs. The main writing forces for the band are Kami and Scott working together to give listeners a vivid image of social injustices. The band’s live performance is a theatric experience as the utilize full-costumes, make-up and stage props.

“Windsor, Ontario’s The Apex delivers a uniquely Canadian twist on extreme technical sounds. The band lay down a very impressive strain of tech hardcore/metal (but never quite metalcore) that brings to mind The End (I think that’s the only reason this one has such a Canadian feel to me) and early Dillinger Escape Plan but in a way that is actually quite enjoyable, a word not often associated with bands of this ilk these days. Maybe it’s the pure sincerity coming through in the vocals, or the satisfying production, or just the insane technicality being done so well, but this one stands way above the tech-metal masses.” – Bravewords

“Consumer warning: ensure your ears are finely-tuned to their ‘metal’ frequency before using The Apex.” – The Windsor Independent

“These guys are unquestionably ones to watch, and if you are a fan of bludgeoning metal with added anarchy then this is a no-brainer.” – Rock n Rele Reviews

“listeners can expect loud and abrasive, albeit highly technical metal.” – PureGrainAudio

“If you delight in utter chaos and explosive misbehaviour, then! this album may in fact be the album for you.” – 925 Rebellion

“The biggest comparisons The Apex get are to Meshuggah and early Dillinger Escape Plan, not too shabby, and I don’t disagree. There’s a consistency to this album in it’s intensity from song to song, meaning there’s no space to breath, even when the tempo slows down. Vocalist Darren M. keeps you cornered from start to finish like a pitbull hulking out. Musically, The Apex are tight and on point. You can’t take anything away from them.” – Stranger With Friction

The Apex formed in August of 2013.

They are a collective of individuals from the Ontario metal community, whom over the years have come together from past bands such as, Closed Casket Funeral, Dismata, Blood Shot Eye, The Coalition Design, and Corprophemia to form The Apex.

In a true culmination of talent, dedication, and timing, this group has created a unique hometown sound that is now being called “Windsor Ghetto Tech”. The brutal sonic assault of their music coupled with the emotional reckless abandonment of their live performance, have drawn stanch comparisons to Meshuggah and classic Dillinger Escape Plan rounded out with a distinctly Canadian flair. To add influence, vocalist Darren M. suffers from Neurogenic Stammering, which effects his speech where the brain won’t tell the mouth what to say so he’s unable to carry on a normal conversation, but for some reason he’s able to scream all the lyrics live and that is how he gets to express himself vocally with the band.

In July, 2014 they entered Shark Tank Productions studio in Windsor, Ontario to begin recording their debut self-titled full length album, “The Apex”. They hired engineer Nick Kinnish of Serafina Productions (Johnny Truent, Architects, and more) to aid them in capturing their sound accurately. In November, 2014 they completed their recording and announced the independent release date of February 21st, 2015. In 2016, the band entered Empire Recording Studios to record their next release, the EP ‘Underbelly’ set to be unleashed in August.

TOUR EXPERIENCE
This band is no stranger to hitting the pavement to support the music they love to make. In their 15+ years of experience creating music in previous bands, they’ve been support on tour for bands like: Cephalic Carnage, All Shall Perish, Despised Icon, Cryptopsy, Today Is The Day, Killitorous, Erimha and Ion Dissonance to name a few. In previous bands they’ve also shared the stage on festivals with bands like: SOD, Venom, Obituary, Cradle Of Filth, Earth Crisis, God Forbid, Skinless, Beneath The Massacre and more to crowds up to 7500+ in North America.

As their current lineup “The Apex”, they have already invested in a mid-sized tour bus and have began to book many shows and festivals across Canada for 2016.

8. Dust of Existence (7:10)

Album Length: 34:45

Track by Track – ‘Dust of Existence’:

1. Created to Kill – When DISPLAY OF DECAY approached the writing of this song, they were originally beginning to rework and old track that had been scrapped about 5 years ago. When they made a couple changes and the track turned into something completely different than what they had anticipated. This is one of the fastest if not the fastest track on the record, where they started incorporating more blast beats, and very heavy gallops on the guitars. The lyrics are based on events from 19th century Europe, around the origination of Frankenstein’s monster, and the attempts at resurrecting someone from the dead.

2. Relentless Reprisal – This track was lyrically of a personal matter. Its concept is that of getting revenge in the most gruesome of ways against somebody who had wronged you in one way or another.

3. High Voltage Castration – This was one of the last tracks written for the album, and is one of the most challenging of their entire catalog to perform, but also one of the most enjoyable. Its written about the “Tucker Telephone,” which was a torture device from the 1960’s that consisted of an old hand-crank telephone and an electric generator. If information was required of a prisoner, or they were found to be disobedient, they would be taken to a hospital room and restrained to a table, where a ground wire would be attached to the large toe, and the hot wire would be attached to the genitals, causing a massive electrical current to ensue, typically causing major deformation to the appendage.

4. Maruta – Based off the events of the Japanese “Unit 731″ experiments, this song outlines some of the gruesome acts that were bestowed upon prisoners during the WWII, which goes from live artillery testing, all the way to forced organ failures and vivisection.

5. Cellar Goreatory – Since the band’s inception, they have always tried to stay closely entwined to the early roots of death metal, and this track in particular follows that very in your face, savage groove that you cannot help but bang your head along to. The lyrical concept was based on a story guitarist Sean Watson was told from an acquaintance who had returned from vacation, which in a short version of the story, the person had a near fatal encounter with someone who was later to have found harboring the bodies of dead female tourists in their basement.

6. Messiah Complex – This was one of the earlier tracks DISPLAY OF DECAY had been performing before the recording process had begun for ‘Dust of Existence’. It starts off fairly slow and melodic, but has very heavy bridge sections, and takes a fast pace very quickly towards the ending.

7. Nyctophilia – This was the first track written out of the eight. It keeps a much slower pace than the rest of the album, but showcases a very dark tone from start to finish.

8. Dust of Existence – When DISPLAY OF DECAY began writing the lyrics for this song, There was no music behind it, and the band had a much different concept that was eventually altered to fit the story being told. When the writing of this track began, they knew right away it was easily going to be the longest song, it had to, it basically is the calm after the storm. With all that was said and done from “Outbreak of Infection” right to where they are now with “Dust of Existence,” this track basically plays out the events that have unfolded, both through the songs, and in real life events around being in this band. Many things have changed since their formation in 2007, and the stories that could be told over that 8 years could last for days, and this song is a testament to the past, present, and future of DISPLAY OF DECAY.

About: Formed in 2007, Display of Decay is widely noted for bringing a unique blend of old school death metal, with tinges of thrash and doom metal. Hailing from Edmonton, the band has spread their infection across Western Canada, sharing the stage alongside other elite acts such as, The Faceless, Origin, Beyond Creation & more..After four well received indie releases, DISPLAY OF DECAY is ready to unleash its next full length “Dust of Existence” that features eight aural assaulting tracks that will set the mosh pits ablaze.  Due out later this Fall 2015 with the support of a Western Canadian tour, “Dust of Existence” is a direct epilogue to their 2014 EP, “Outbreak of Infection”.

“We aimed to keep a similar style of groove on this record as we had on previous releases, with heavy punchy riffs that are near impossible to keep out of your head, but still maintain that raw edge we have become known for. With the artwork as well, we wanted it portrayed in such fashion that it plays out the story being told from the Outbreak record to this new record, which is basically a devastating virus that has been unleashed upon mankind, terrorizing and annihilating everything in its path, “Dust of Existence” is the aftermath of these events. Nothing left but scattered remains of what was once there.” comments guitarist Sean Watson.

With a few of the tracks on the record written during the “Outbreak of Infection” recording sessions, which the band felt weren’t quite ready at the time to be recorded. During this writing session for “Dust of Existence”, DISPLAY OF DECAY especially tried to make sure each and every song was very diverse from the rest of the tracks.

Watson explains.

“We didn’t want it to feel as though there was any formula or predictability going on. We find that far too many metal bands form a niche that is their “go-to” when it comes to writing, and that it becomes a predictable comfort-zone that can make a record feel as though the same track is being played from start to finish and really make the listener feel completely disengaged from what is actually being played in front of them. We like to throw whatever change-ups or fills in that I can to really make the listener that much more integrated into the tracks.”

– 30 –

““Created To Kill” is a monster itself — a blazing onslaught of thrashing death with a raw, old-school tone, loaded with riff savagery and anchored by a nimble bass line and a hard-hitting drum attack. The song’s dynamic tempos are sure to be gasoline for the mosh pit, and the punchy grooves in the music should get heads moving vigorously as well. On top of all that death metal goodness, the rapid-fire vocals are as bestial as this kind of instrumental ferocity demands.” – No Clean Singing

“Edmonton’s long-standing denizens of death metal” – Decibel Magazine

“Dust of Existence is an intense, brutal album of death metal that is surely to snap your neck and crush your skull.” – My Global Mind

“Dust of Existence (self-released, September 22) is exactly what Death Metal is all about. Crushing, killer guitar grooves, thick as molasses bass tones, and a vocalist who sounds like he eats children, combined with a slammin’ drummer make for one monstrous listen, and not just the first time you play the disc, but each time thereafter.” – Amps And Green Screens

“This is pure North American death metal with a dosage of thrash, but it’s the effective songwriting that keeps your interest from start to finish. From the ever-present rumblings of the bass (a welcome inclusion compared to many in the genre) to the equally ever-present number of mid-tempo riffs that seem to bore their way into your brain, it’s a fun and enjoyable listen.” – Dead Rhetoric

“Clearly musically inspired by Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and some of the New York death metal scene, Dust of Existence is a thrashy death metal album that sounds likeThe Bleeding slowed down a bit, and sung by the son of Chris Barnes and George Fisher.” – Crown of Viserys

“This five-piece infection truly knows how to bring forth pungent and coarse Death Metal tunes intensified by the addition of elements from Thrash and Doom Metal, making sure all songs from their brand new release, entitled Dust of Existence, have something unique to offer to the listener.” – The Headbanging Moose

“This is Brutal Death Metal that wastes no time on pointless intros or messing around; the album starts with a bang and is all about the aggression and violence.” – Wonderbox Metal

“With some of the most brutal riffs and vocals that I’ve heard in quite some time, Edmonton Alberta’s Display of Decay are an underground metal force to be reckoned with. I proudly stamp them as our #CanadianMetalBandOfTheWeek” – Fox Force Five News

“Display of Decay have absolutely nailed this record. A great example of no frills death metal done spot on. Turn it up and bang thy fucking head.: – The Killchain Blog

“Shattered Shores combines two things we love at idobi Howl: intense shredding and a concept reminiscent of the TV show Lost. Once you hear the latest from Silent Line you’ll have to go back and play again.” – Idobi Howl

“Silent Line has all the melodic death metal mechanics down pat with Shattered Shores. But best of all, they keep things interesting and fresh; never taking the most predictable or easiest route. This is sure to get some attention thrown their way.” – DeadRhetoric

“”The epic ‘Shattered Shores II’, the fury of ‘Into the Chasm’ and the closing, powerful melodies of ‘Embrace the End’ all showcases Silent Line to be a band of supreme talent and potential.” – Kill Chain Blog

“Packed with orchestration, guitar riffs and anthemic choruses, it makes one want to growl along.” – Infrared Mag

“A great blend of Groove and Death Metal, with plenty of sea storm based themes here. Well worth picking up.” – Dark Compass

“Between the chugging death metal riffs, the writhing drums, cracking bass, death metal growls, sultry cleans, the soft acoustic elements, the melancholic symphonic components, and the overall great story telling, there is no way you can get enough of Shattered Shores.” – Cadaver Garden

“When we say support independent music, Silent line is someone you should be looking at. Originally from rural Alberta, they’ve made their way into the second coldest city on earth, Edmonton, to ply their metal trade…This music is heavy, dynamic, and quite progressive. Modern metal meets old school symphonies is a good start. The guitars are crushing. The drums pound double bass all the way. The guitar melodies intertwine with the pianos making a deliciously eerie mixture. Synthesizers and drums. Choral voices and growls. Everything seems to come in pairs on this album.” Glacially Musical Blog

“Every song is packed with beauty. SL have always been influenced by the Gothenburg sound, and on ‘Shattered Shores’, they succeed in attaining their goal. It still wows me that they are an unsigned act.” – Taste of Khaos

“The new SILENT LINE album, SHATTERED SHORES, is an interesting and is very much in the vein of some TRIVIUMstyle thrash and death metal. It has an overall very American style heavy metal sound that is going to appeal to a lot of younger teenagers and people full of angst…Musically you will find some excellent guitar playing, some great contrasting melody and some ferocious drumming. The band sound great and you really can not complain about their talent for song writing.” – Demons Zone

“For melodic metal fans from the early nineties to the current sound of many metal bands. Silent Line will appeal to metal heads of all ages and metal preferences. As a listener you will listen to one of the tracks on this album and be motivated to throw those horns up wherever you are at that moment. \m/” – The Metal Syndicate

“This is melo-deth but not your average melo-death overall Silent Line to me sound like a perfect mash-up of Dark Tranquility and Amon Amarth.” – Thy Demons Be Scribblin

“The songs on this, 10 track, album are diverse and powerful. Songs like ‘Starfall’ and ‘Into The Chasm’ show the pure diversity of metal, and the power it has to weave intricate tapestries of imagery, sound and movement into a single glorious form. Overall,  Shattered Shores is an album for any Metalhead’s collection.” – 925 Rebellion

BIO

Brace yourself for Silent Line; they produce heavy and melodic music with an orchestral flair rooted in death metal. The band hails from Bonnyville, Alberta, and the members decided to step outside of their small town trappings — they wanted to continue to create aggressive music and play live. The members of Silent Line have been friends since high school, and that has allowed them to collaborate on writing and composing their signature brand of death-infused melodic metal seamlessly over the years.

Their previous album, ‘Born of A Dying Star’ led them to discover their true sound and refine it so that the music that they create now embodies what they have envisioned. Their dedication to their craft is strengthened by their loyal fans, who have supported their development over the years. The band is composed of Mike Burton leading the charge on guitar and vocals, Randy Bergh writing pummeling guitar riffs, Andy Sidloski crafting driving bass lines, and Adam Kallstrom thundering on drums. The line up charges audiences with their energy and fills the entire room with its symphonious melodies.

They are releasing their 2015 full-length ‘Shattered Shores’, which happens to be a concept album. The title track is split into two parts, and throughout the album several thematic riffs and lyrics are repeated, creating a motif for listeners. The title references being stranded and trapped forever as the shores become more eroded and the reality of isolation sets in. The lyrics revolve around the themes of overcoming hardships, anxiety, and “weathering the storm” in order to persevere. A single person is referred to throughout the album and everything is told from their point of view as they wander, stuck on the island — unsure of how they got there, and unsure if they will ever leave.

The band is planning to unleash this album Friday, October 30, 2015 to metal fans across the globe who want to share in the experience that ‘Shattered Shores’ has in store. For more information please visit https://www.facebook.com/silentlinemetal.

About The album explained by the band:

“Shattered Shores” is a concept album – our first attempt at one – that depicts a tortured island stuck in time being slowly worn away by an endless ocean. Themes of frost, snow, fire, night, and stars are used to illustrate feelings of hopelessness, fear, and loss. A single person is referred to throughout the album and everything is told from their point of view as they wander, stuck on the island unsure of how they got there, and unsure if they will ever leave. Lots of references to snow and frost are used as we live in Canada, and there is a lonely but beautiful character to the long winter we experience. Another recurring theme is the storm, which brings change and renewal; it is – for lack of a better term – the symbol of hope and of a brighter future.

Overall, Shattered Shores has a melancholic feel to it. It is definitely darker than our other albums, but we feel that it is much more mature and identifiable with an audience. It’s not meant to be depressing, but it deals with real issues and lots of the time those are not pretty. While it is a darker album, the message is not. Overcoming internal issues and feelings is the prime focus, and to describe how important that is, it is necessary to spend time describing the more pessimistic side of things and what makes it so crippling. The songs are more involving and deeper in meaning and structure than our last release, and we took a step back technically on purpose. Individually, the instruments are not as “crazy” as before, but we had a vision for the songs this time, we could see the end product and knew that to get there we didn’t have to play the most technically demanding things as fast as we could. The songs, while more simple, have far more feeling and emotion than before and we are very proud of what we have produced. We hope that everyone listening to the album can find something they enjoy, something they identify with, and something that makes them want to continue listening.

Track by track explained by the band:

“Frost of the Night”

The opening song of the album starts with the sounds of wind and ocean waves, leading into a large, orchestrated introduction. When the song picks up, it hits you right in the face and doesn’t stop until the last note ends. This song is used to set the mood of the album both lyrically and musically, as it shows new aspects of our music like blastbeats, orchestrations, clean vocals, and more-simple, but catchier guitar riffs. Lyrically, this song describes the crumbling land and the uncertain future, as well as the forgotten past. The person being lost inside the seemingly endless night has now become most comfortable in the dark, unable to find their way back home even if they wanted to.

“Erosion”

This song is more “bouncy” and is a lot different from the opening track both lyrically and musically. The bounciness comes from locking the rhythm guitars to the kick drum in verses and blending lead guitar and synth runs together. In this song, the setting is one of the land free of snow, being burned away by an inferno; fear dominates. The  past and how the land has come to be a ruined hellscape is the main subject matter.

“Black and White”

This is the transition into winter after the inferno in the last song. Primarily dealing with the passage of time and fading memories, the lyrics describe a person longing to remember better times. Longing as well for a simpler time when things were seen as black or white: simple and clear choices that do not truly exist. Complex shades of grey have become reality. A lead guitar laden intro moves into a percussive verse featuring mainly drums and bass underneath the vocals. There isn’t a very complex structure to the song, but as with lots of the album it is the feeling that matters, not the amount of notes or changes in time signature.

“Shattered Shores I: Timeless Night”

The first part of the title track of the album, it describes the coming of the storm that is supposed to wash away the ash of the past and renew the land. It shares a similar chorus with Shattered Shores II: A New Beginning, as well as the verse riff – although the songs are in different tunings. It also shares some lyrics with Erosion to tie the depiction of ashes and flames to the storm. It primarily describes hopelessness and sorrow, trying to move on but being stuck in depression. Musically it is quite diverse ranging from classic In Flames-style dual lead guitars to a four guitar harmonized clean bridge and huge ringing chords.

“Summersong”

The song’s lyrics first describe acceptance of the end as laid out before; wandering alone in endless night and snowy wastelands, uncertain of anything but hopelessness. But by the end, there is a sign that change is in the air. The frost and snow has given way to spring, and the storm has melted the last of the snow. This is the direction we always wanted to head in: blending harsh vocals and fast sections with acoustic guitar, synth, and clean vocals to give a more dynamic sound. One of the most diverse songs on the album ranging from an acoustic intro to synth lead over polyrhythms, laid back verses, time changes, and a chorus with nearly ten vocal layers.

“Starfall”

We all need reminders in dark times there are going to be better days ahead, and to try and avoid becoming accustomed to negativity and the darkness; wishing that even the stars would go out so that there would be no need to even hope for light. One of the more fast paced and brutal songs on the album, it has minimalistic verses to make the choruses sound even larger.

“Shattered Shores II: A New Beginning”

The second part of the album’s title track deals with coming to terms with the past and trying to move forward. The past is burned to ash and the storm washes it all away, leaving only the present and the future. However, the present is just another version of hopelessness, wearing away the endless days watching the ocean with no control over life. It’s our longest song, clocking in just over 8 minutes, it contains a little bit of everything and is an experiment in combining orchestrations and synths over heavy passages. It shouldn’t feel like 8 minutes by the end, there is a lot of variation and several time changes to keep things fresh.

“Into the Chasm”

Into the Chasm could be described as the person remembering what led the land to become ruined and barren, feeling deserving of the fate through past actions of greed and deceit. Another experiment in combining orchestrations with synthesizers, this is also the only song on the album written in triplet time.

“The Faceless Shadow”

The second song on the album with an extended orchestrated intro, The Faceless Shadow in the song is a reference to our fears and self-doubt; in the concept as a whole it is an actual physical manifestation of these negative thoughts: a malicious entity and antagonist. The song ranges from fast double kick passages to an acapella vocal break with a few time changes in there to keep it fresh.

“Embrace the End”

The closing song with an appropriate title, it is about not being afraid of the future. There is always hope, even if something familiar must end to initiate the change required. The message of the song is to overcome the fear we all have of inadequacy and failure.
