Icelandic hard rock/metal sensation Drungi is making waves with their upcoming debut album “Hamfarir Hugans”, set to be released on April 5th. As a prelude to this highly anticipated release, the band has dropped their first single, “Alda”, which hit the airwaves in late 2023 to critical acclaim. They continue that momentum with the second single “Myrkur” (Dark), constructed with a heavy waltz simulating a dance macabre with the darkness, which reflects the element of the song. They explain further:

“We don’t know what happens in the darkness and how it will affect our life, and that’s the scary idea that happens in the musical part of Myrkur. Depression, You can let the darkness control you but you must remember to turn on the light that only oneself can turn on. The darkness can be obsessive but it is dangerous if it’s used wrong on others and yourself.”

“Myrkur” is a song that was originally inspired by one of Drungi’s earliest demos that did not make the cut for the album. The song tracks the feeling of darkness and depression that we all feel inside of us, some feel it stronger, others have an easier time finding the light, “but we are the Darkness and we want you to join us”.

The release of “Hamfarir Hugans” marks Drungi’s fifth year together, and promises an emotional rollercoaster with tracks like the isolating “Ófærð” (Impass) and the desolate “Þoka” (Fog). The album’s themes delve into mental health issues, mirroring the band members’ personal struggles. All lyrics are in Icelandic, connecting with the harsh environments that locals have navigated since the island’s inception.

“Myrkur” is an invitation to dance within the darkness and is recommended for fans of Skálmöld, Black Sabbath, and Gojira.

Watch and listen to “Myrkur” via its premiere on MetalInsider HERE.

“Hamfarir Hugans” is due out on April 5, 2024, and is available for pre-order at https://drungi.bandcamp.com.

Omnivide, the Canadian progressive metal act, formed in 2020 and is ready to release its debut album “A Tale of Fire”. Musically, the album is a blend of their favourite elements from progressive metal, technical death, and symphonic/power metal. There are some very heavy/dark riffs, some very grandiose/more epic sections with lots of orchestral instruments, as well as lighter/cleaner sections with clean vocals. The band expands:

“We are extremely excited to finally share this album with the world. We started working on the first songs in 2019, so this has been in the making for a long time now. We had to learn a lot during those years to achieve our vision, from songwriting to audio engineering and production, and we wanted to make sure that we put out something we’d be truly happy with, which is why the process took so long. We don’t expect the next album to take nearly as long, let’s put it that way!”

Lyrically, the songs on “A Tale of Fire” are broadly about Omnivide trying to understand death, both as a tragedy and a natural part of life, the pain it brings, and the resilience that can be born from it. They use storytelling in some songs as a vehicle for this, and since they love fantasy media, the content of these stories has fantasy elements, while also weaving in deeper concepts of death, hardship, regret, and growth. Other songs revolve around historical figures, while others are mostly metaphorical, but all are linked together by this exploration of all aspects of death.

With plans for future releases, Omnivide promises to continue pushing the boundaries of its musical exploration, offering fans an evolving and captivating experience. The band encourages fans to expect another album or EP within two years of this release, as they are already immersed in the creation of new material. “A Tale of Fire” is recommended for fans of Alkaloid, Devin Townsend, and Obscura.

Due out on March 22, 2024, “A Tale of Fire” can be heard via its full stream premiere on Bravewords HERE.

“The compositions on the album are as tenacious and imposing as the angles in the band’s logo. Each song packs a list of surprises that are like colorful candy being fed to you just when you are beginning to get hungry. Obviously talented, the quartet never lets their talent outshine their songwriting, although the flashes they do show will leave you speechless. How is this band not signed to a major record label?” 9/10 – Metal-Temple

“The vast swirling and shimmering sounds that open the new song (Csomic Convergence) quickly encompass the expanse and wonder of the cosmos, but the heavy punching throb of the bass and electrifying percussive acrobatics presage something different on the way — and the change arrives in a sudden flurry of rapidly darting notes, furiously hammering drums, and scalding snarls — which suddenly trade places with sky-high singing. It’s a head-spinning experience, with many moving parts that spin and shift with thrilling speed, eventually overlaid with keys that resemble a glorious heavenly choir whose tones contrast with the ravenous growls and manic instrumental intensity beneath them. Although the rhythm section continue to kick up a storm, the music seems to become even more magnificent and sweeping — until the intensity erupts in blistering blast-beats, unhinged screams, synths that sear, and a thoroughly mind-bending guitar solo at the finale. It’s the kind of closing spectacle that will put your heart in your throat.” – No Clean Singing

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – March 20, 2024

Join Canada’s FORSAKEN RITE On The Epic Folk Metal Quest With New Video “The Storm”

Forsaken Rite, the epic folk metal band hailing from the northern plains of Edmonton, Canada, is set to unleash a tempest of musical prowess with their latest single “The Storm” which comes from their forthcoming EP slated for release later this year. True to their high-fantasy roots, Forsaken Rite weaves intricate tales of adventure, battles, and travels with each song they create. The upcoming EP is a continuation of 2017’s “The Northern Saga”, and sees the band/war party heading West. The band details what’s in store:

“New stories, new experiences, excitement. The adventurers are traveling West and encounter a terrible storm. As if something greater has other plans for their journey, they must weather its forces in order to survive and continue on their path. A catchy sing-a-long song with clean and distorted vocals and various folk elements. The instrumental section is percussive and brings together multiple folk instruments and melodies.”

Having undergone almost a complete lineup change, “The Storm” serves as a beacon of the band’s evolution, showcasing their musical growth and creative ingenuity. With new members come fresh perspectives, and the result is an EP that will captivate audiences and leave them craving more.

Founded in October 2012, Forsaken Rite has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, drawing inspiration from the vast landscapes of the North and their rich ancestral heritage. With an overarching conceptual plan guiding their musical journey, the band invites listeners to join them on their musical conquest in a world where myth and reality collide. Forsaken Rite is recommended for fans of Eluveitie, Nightwish, and Faun.

““The Northern Saga” is definitely worth checking out as it has some solid songs, strong performances and catchy tracks. Another epic album from north of the border.” – Folk-Metal.nl (2017)

“…The conquest based on riffs warriors and vindictive is launched, no prisoners and drink in the skull of our enemies tonight! But FORSAKEN RITE is not just a fight, it’s also a real passion for Scandinavian shamanic atmospheres that are inserted in small touches along the tracks…” (Translated from French) – kaosguards.com (2017)

NATE SILVA (ex-The Slyde) Announces Canadian Tour Dates (ON, QC, NB, NS, PEI) + New Video “Cauterize”

New Album “The Chase” Out May 2024

Nate Silva is a Canadian guitarist and singer/songwriter who has traveled through several sonic worlds throughout his career such as touring North America and playing at the massive Wacken Open Air festival proving that his versatile guitar work and captivating tenor vocals shine across multiple musical genres. Now, embarking on a solo career, accompanied by drummer/vocalist Matt Babineau and bassist /vocalist Dan Joseph, he delivers a dynamic and versatile rock experience that builds on the high-energy foundation of his past endeavours.

To introduce his new direction to fans, he is gearing up to release his first album “The Chase” in May, and prior to that, the single “Cauterize”. Also, for those fortunate to be in the area, he is announcing album release shows in June and August. He shares his thoughts on the single:

“There is more 1990s alternative rock inspiration on this one, and likely the angriest song on the record. This is the uglier side of grieving the end of a relationship and trying to deal with infidelity. The words are pretty on the nose with this one, so I’ll let the lyrics speak for themselves. Musically, I wanted a groovier song on the album, and I also wanted a song that could have potential for jamming or opening up in the middle section in a live performance setting.”

As a natural-born performer, he is a delight to watch as he channels a commanding stage presence and encourages audience interaction. The live lineup presents as your classic rock power trio, and in a trio, every member has to be on top of their game onstage. They provide an engaging and rockin’ live show, where musical integrity and musicianship is combined with thoughtful songwriting.

The live video for “Cauterize” is available now and is recommended for fans of Danko Jones, Billy Talent, and Green Day.

““Only Death Brings Silence” is not just an album; it’s an introspective journey into the soul of its creator. It’s an invitation to explore profound themes through the lens of progressive metal music, promising to resonate with fans and newcomers alike. With its intricate compositions and thoughtful lyrics, this album should make a significant impact on its release, urging listeners to both enjoy the primordial headbanging and obligatory “onion-face” of musical acceptance and reflect deeply on the existential themes it wrestles with, which is very relevant today and good to see, as well as hear, that the need to craft a message that resonates with everyone in the vehicle of art that can still be enjoyed in blissful ignorance. 5/5” – Metal Epidemic
“Only Death Brings Silence is an intoxicating and powerful exploration of not only the human condition but of sound. MUST LISTEN TRACKS: “Terminal”, “You Make Your Own Luck”, “One Death Brings Silence”” – Amplify The Noise

“Technical and groovin’ prog ish metal, probably falling in the melodic death pile.” – The Mosh Pit 89.9 FM – WORT FM (Madison, WI)

“Perhaps that Matt Barkley has strengthened himself for the release of his first album with a phenomenal front man who hits the right notes in all Metalcore pitches. Alex Hamilton is a real asset to “Only Death Brings Silence” and one of the many reasons why you should definitely check on the duo’s first EP. But you can also name the fine riffing, the great melodies, the thick breakdowns and the groovy foundation of the disc, because the given ingredients ensure that, that you can have the six new pieces properly packed on the eggs. NOTSM does not even have to be particularly brutal or overly harmonious, but can rely on the thrashy attitude, the occasional post-metal excursions and the varied vocal performance, who do not necessarily take unconventional paths in the package, but fire the songwriting factor with enough positive energy that you take your thumb up as quickly as possible.” – PowerMetal.de

“I loved it, powerfull Metalcore energy with big guitar riffs, vocals are solid too (The Hedonic Treadmill). The production side is really good ! Bravo” – MANAGRAM Productions

“The song (The Hedonic Treadmill) is interesting, the vocals and guitar lines really hit hard, congrats. The production is good too.” Dreamfuss – Alt-rock

“We really dig this track (The Hedonic Treadmill), you can definitely feel the emotion and the passion in every aspects, we love how it moves from Metal, to Metal Core so effortlessly, as well as being very melodic.” – The Metal Asylum

“Brutal and precise! Love the metal!” – Buzz Slayers

“Big big track (Humans) here, the riffs are devastating with a good groove and the vocals powerful and melodic, it’s a good job well HEAVY ! Bravo \m/ !” – MANAGRAM Productions

“Great structures and riffs, the song (Humans) is heavy and well constructed, you’ve created something powerful!” – Roadie Metal

“(Humans) Fast, distorted and heavy! That’s what I enjoy in this genre! The riffs kept me at the edge of my seat and then the vocals came in with some amazing screams that really sound good! That bassy mixed voice sounds absolutely great. The chorus is really melodic and I enjoyed it! I would not change anything here, it’s really fast and gives out a unique kind of energy. I would not consider this simply metal, we have such great music that should not be overlooked because it’s produced in a metal song! The break was done pretty good as well and would create an amazing mosh pit!” – Indiefferential Magazine

“(Humans) The first thing I want to say is that the production quality is top notch! Every instrument sounds at its best! The grooves are so rhythmically fun! The kick drum sounds like a machine gun! It’s so fast! Unbelievable! The leads are epic!” – FFeel Music

“(Humans) Loved the performance! Beautiful songwriting and tasty riffing & vocal performance. Straight up brutal and relentless heaviness. It just screams aggression and power! Has a bit of a groovy death metal touch to it. very solid release.” – Dejected

About The Album Artwork

The concept behind “Only Death Brings Silence” delves into the noise of our modern world, where the constant need to voice opinions, the onslaught of distressing news, and online discord create a metaphorical “loud” environment, and the album suggests that the only respite from this overwhelming clamor is found in death.

The album artwork encapsulates this theme through a deliberately blurred image, symbolizing the sense of being unrecognizable and adrift in the sea of societal “noise”.

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

“Only Death Brings Silence” takes listeners on a musical and lyrical adventure that explores some dark aspects of the human experience. The heavy and dynamic musical compositions enhance the emotional impact of the lyrical themes, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for fans of heavy metal.

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

1. Humans:
Lyrically – This song is about the profound negative impact that humans have made on the planet.

Musically – This song has a basic song structure and was written primarily to accommodate the lyrics. The song is fast-paced and is more or less based on the same musical motif throughout its entirety. I’m not a big fan of guitar solos, but I thought a solo would fit nicely in the middle of this song. The section from 2:31-2:41 was written with a live setting in mind and is meant to pump up the crowd before the last verse comes in with a bang.

2. Terminal:
Lyrically – This song is about mortality and how, no matter what we do in our lives, we’re all going to eventually die.

Musically – This is a slower-paced song that has a kind of “doomy” vibe to it. The first part of the song follows a pretty common format, but the second half veers off in a completely different direction ending with a mind-bending drum part.

3. The Hedonic Treadmill:
Lyrically – This song is about how we’re always chasing the next high, even though it rarely leads us to the happiness and fulfillment we are hoping it will.

Musically – This song starts with a headbanger of a riff that is clearly inspired by Meshuggah. The vocals come in pretty heavy during the second riff of the song, and then there’s a weird (what I like to call) “guitar trade-off”. A “guitar trade-off” is a technique I use often in my songwriting where each guitar will play a different riff and then, on the repeat, they will swap and play the other guitar’s riff. After this section, the song is pretty simple from a structural point-of-view until it gets to the fast riff around 3:18. Right before the fast riff though, there’s some neat rhythmic ideas happening: if you listen closely, the guitar chug pattern is in 7/8 time and never changes, but the drums change three different times throughout the course of the riff. The outro starts with a neat guitar melody that’s played on its own, and then the rest of the music comes in with a cool rhythmic pattern that eventually fades out.

4. The Hedonic Treadmill 2:
Lyrically – This song is about how we’re always chasing the next high, even though it rarely leads us to the happiness and fulfillment we are hoping it will.

Musically – This is the second part of a two-part song, and it starts with the same rhythmic pattern that part 1 ends on, but without the melody overtop. The vocals of the song immediately come in and feel like a punch in the face. The rest of the song has a more basic structure than the first part and has a lot of clean guitar and vocal sections, which is meant to contrast Part 1 of the song. After the punchy riff from 3:31 to 3:44, the outro of the song is really chill, ending on a big crescendo that stops dead right at the top.

5. You Make Your Own Luck:
Lyrically – This song is about the role that luck plays in the successes and failures of our lives.

Musically – This song has a basic song structure and was written primarily to accommodate the lyrics. This is another fast-paced song that has a pretty typical structure. When writing the vocals for this one, I wanted to keep them harsh the whole time because of the aggressive nature of where the lyrical content came from. I ultimately decided to let the guitars carry the melody during the choruses.

6. Only Death Brings Silence:
Lyrically – N/A
Musically – This is a long instrumental song that is a rollercoaster ride through many different musical ideas. If you listen closely though, some of the ideas do come back again, either rhythmically or melodically. The original idea I had for this song when I wrote it was to split it up into about 10 different tracks, but I ultimately decided to keep it together as one song because that’s how I always intended it to be listened to.

Story Angles – Fun Facts:

1. NOTSM is an acronym for “none of this shit matters” and this is a mantra I’ve been using for years to remind me to focus on the things that are important in my life.

2. The lyrics for “The Hedonic Treadmill” and “The Hedonic Treadmill 2” come from my own experience of dealing with burnout.

3. The vocalist on this album, Alex Hamilton, was hired off of Fiverr.

4. All instruments on this album are programmed. All guitars and vocals are recorded.

5. The working title for the song “Only Death Brings Silence” was “Zippicamknicks”, an undergarment from Aldous Huxley’s novel “Brave New World”.

==============================================

Excitement builds for the release of NOTSM’s debut album “Only Death Brings Silence” on May 3, 2024. A solo project from Matt Barkley, the album delivers a unique blend of heavy metal, proggy riffs, and breakdowns wrapped up with introspective lyrical themes. Barkley’s primary instrument is the guitar, thus the songwriting process typically begins with guitar-based riffs or concepts. He has a deep fascination with rhythm guitar playing, often experimenting with intricate rhythmic patterns, and using odd time signatures, polyrhythms, and polymeters to create engaging compositions. He comments on the album:

“The aim of this album and its singles is to provide listeners with a multifaceted listening experience. Through the lyrics, I aspire for listeners to connect with the themes and find personal resonance, all while delivering plenty of opportunities for headbanging from the heavier moments of the album. During softer moments, I hope listeners will appreciate and be moved by the melodies, while during more experimental segments, I hope they’ll find intrigue and curiosity, urging them to explore the full breadth of the musical ideas presented.”

Over the years, Barkley has maintained a riff bank—a repository of ideas that he frequently revisits and refines for use in his music. In his approach, music precedes lyrics, though he’s recently delved more into lyric writing. This album sees a blend of both processes, with two songs crafted around pre-existing lyrical concepts. While his methods may evolve in the future, this amalgamation of guitar-driven creativity and evolving lyrical exploration defines my current writing ethos.

NOTSM is defined by Barkley’s willingness to adapt and refine his sound while retaining the spirit of experimentation and innovation that is evident in the music. “Only Death Brings Silence” is recommended for fans of The Halo Effect, Rivers of Nihil, and Sylosis.

NOTSM Announces New Proggy, Groove Single “The Hedonic Treadmill”

Debut Album “Only Death Brings Silence” Out May 2024

NOTSM, the brainchild of guitarist Matt Barkley, is proud to announce the release of their debut album “Only Death Brings Silence”. Set to unveil its haunting melodies and powerful riffs to the world this coming May 2024, the album is a testament to Barkley’s journey through the metal world. Accompanying this exciting news is the release of the record’s first single “The Hedonic Treadmill”. Barkley explains what’s in store:

“The Hedonic Treadmill” is a relentless onslaught of heavy metal energy, delving into the depths of human desire and the futile pursuit of satisfaction. With thunderous riffs and pounding drums, the song encapsulates the never-ending cycle of craving and disappointment. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the hedonic treadmill, where every attempt to find fulfillment leads only to emptiness and disillusionment. Despite moments of pleasure, the song warns of the inevitable descent back to dissatisfaction, echoing the struggles of those trapped in an endless pursuit of gratification.”

“The Hedonic Treadmill” is a captivating track that showcases NOTSM‘s signature blend of heavy metal, progressive and melodic elements. The accompanying lyric video, available on YouTube, provides a visual representation of the band’s dark and introspective sound.

This song starts with a headbanger of a riff that is clearly inspired by Meshuggah and the grooves don’t let go for the duration. It finishes off with a neat guitar melody that’s played on its own, and then the rest of the music comes in with a cool rhythmic pattern that eventually fades out. “The Hedonic Treadmill” is recommended for fans of Mors Principium Est, The Halo Effect, and Rivers of Nihil and can be heard at the following links:

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – March 19, 2024

VICOLO INFERNO Unleash Video “Cold Surface” Off Third Studio Album “Circles” Out May 2024

Rockshots Records is proud to present their latest signing of Italy’s VICOLO INFERNO for the release of their third studio “Circles”, which will be available on all streaming platforms along with CD this coming May 2024. Instinctive, energetic, melodic, dark, and intense, this is the quartet’s most mature and experimental recording to date.

“Circles” like its predecessor dances among various colors of the soul, from the most intimate and convoluted to the angry, to the amused and ironic. The track listing was chosen to guide the listener through a journey. The writing process for this record has been consolidated for years, although somewhat against the current.

“We are “romantic supporters” of songwriting in the rehearsal room. We always start from a vocal line or a guitar riff, and if there is inspiration, the first version is laid down, which is then refined and shaped over time like a piece of wood by a sculptor.” adds the band

Originally producing about 20 tracks, they widdled it down to the presenting 10 songs on the album, those not selected will be used for a future release. Vicolo Inferno hopes that those who listen to this sonic exploration from start to finish will feel the introspective expressions while understanding their interpretation of social criticisms, fantasies, and telling of comical experiences they have lived through as a band. An example track is “Gummy Bears” which is about soaking Gummy Bear candy in vodka which is a fun backstage tradition for them with friends and fans.

They also add about this next full-length:

“It is said that the third album is canonically the one of awareness; it is certainly the one in which we put more care into arranging the songs, where we experimented with some stylistic figures never used by us before, both in music and in singing. For once, we would like to venture to say that we think it is our best album (although it is always difficult to say which child you love most) for ideas and execution, but as always, the hope is to reach the audience, which will be the judge in deciding whether our feelings hit the mark or not.”

The lead single “Cold Surface”, which the band is presenting today, is the album’s most energetic and complete.

“Cold Surface” is an (introspective) of the difficulty of two people in being on the same wavelength, sometimes ending up being “distant” even if in the same room.” adds the band.

VICOLO INFERNO BIOGRAPHY:

In 1504, an alley in “Forum Cornelii” (Imola, Bologna, Italy) wrote its history in blood: a bloody battle left its mark on the popular imagination and forever transformed the name of that narrow cobblestone path into “VICOLO INFERNO”.

In 2003, the encounter of the two founding members of the band Igor and Marco led shortly after to the release of their first demo “FIRE COVERZ.”

By 2005, the desire to propose original music production began to emerge, and the first 4 songs were collected in the EP demo “HELL’S ALLEY.”

The following years were marked by intense live activity, band contests, and recognitions.

In 2013, the band signed a contract with logic(il)logic Records for the release of their debut album “HOURGLASS.” Live promotion lasted throughout the year, reaching England in March 2014 with 6 dates.

In 2016, with the addition of Wallace on bass, the band completed the composition and recording of their 2nd album “STRAY IDEALS,” once again for logic IL logic Records.

Currently, the band, enriched by the new drummer Renzo Cuomo, has finished recording their 3rd album “CIRCLES,” set to be released on May 31, 2024, for Rockshots Records.
