Band Name: Aittala
Release Title: Ill-Gotten Gains
Label: Exitus Stratagem Records
Release Date: November 21, 2025
Genre Description: Eclectic Doom
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

“Bookended by “Machines (Prologue)” and “Machines (Epilogue)”, the album’s structure feels like a full-circle journey. One that captures the essence of the band’s evolution. The blend of storytelling and heavy music makes it clear why these tracks were worth bringing back. With Machines, Aittala doesn’t just revisit the past. They make it hit harder than ever.” – Amplify The Noise (2025 – Machines EP)

“Captivatingly versatile, genre-connecting with plenty of attitude. An intensely powerful and emotionally captivating Electric Doom/Heavy/Power HouseTrip that is excellent at combining expansive melodies and atmospheric melancholic heavy touch. 8/10” – FFM-Rock (2025 – Machines EP)

“A pure blast of good tunes flying around for life. A retro llike cover artwork, it matches it all.  The atmosphere and the old tunes still ringing after so many years like it was yesterday. A very good album to own with pleasure. Aittala is here to stay, get your dose of good tunes 100/100.” – The Metal Mag (2025 – Machines EP)

“Eric Aittala is obviously nostalgic on ‘Machines’. But that in no way means that the sound is frozen in the past. On the contrary, the production is modern and powerful. The individual songs are thus transferred to the here and now. A good album, even if the band is ‘only’ a duo.” – Metalheads Forever Magazine (2025 – Machines EP)

=================================================

About the EP Artwork:

The album artwork is an updated interpretation of our mascot Frank, which is a cartoon pig head in a pentagram created back in 2014 based on the song ‘Pigs’ from the album ‘Effigy’ (2014).

Frank is the kind of guy who helps acquire ‘Ill-Gotten Gains’ with no questions if you have the cash.

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

As with all Aittala releases, listeners will hear genre lines blurred using influences of traditional metal, doom, groove, and others to create a cohesive musical experience.

Lyrically, the songs explore themes of creating chaos for personal gain, the consequences for those actions, and the search for redemption.

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

1. Isolation: A doomy track with the heavy guitars complemented by clean guitars and a time signature change, about paying the consequences for decisions that have been made.

2. Ill-Gotten Gains: The songs start with a powerful bouncing 8-string guitar riff that carries the song to the transition to a doomy interlude and conclusion.  The lyrics are about creating chaos and exploiting those situations for personal gain.

3. Blacklisted: A groove/sludge-inspired song that is basically the counter to ‘Isolation’ and ‘Ill-Gotten Gains’; seeing through those types of people described in those 2 songs.

4. Ever After: A modern-day metal ‘ballad’ about internal conflict and the search for redemption that may not be there.

5. Ashes: A more traditional heavy metal track with lyrics about someone getting in over their head and dragging others down on the descent.

AITTALA Lineup – Gary ‘Smith’ Zeus (Drums), Eric Aittala (Guitar/Vox)

The music of AITTALA (pronounced ‘EYE-tah-la’) crosses many metal genres; it’s hard to put it into just one category. The sound infuses elements of classic heavy metal, doom, progressive, power, thrash, and hard rock with lyrics drawing inspiration from the darker side of the human condition. The AITTALA sound has been cited for being unique, which is no easy feat in the metal genre.

The first incarnation of AITTALA was formed in 1991 while Eric was living in the Netherlands. With fellow American Tim on vocals and Dutch bandmates Ed (drums) and Jon (bass), the band became a staple of the Dutch metal scene.

With the release of the 3-song EP ‘Selling Heaven’ in the summer of 1993, AITTALA opened for such bands as THE GATHERING and SADIST.

Unfortunately, as the demo started to create a buzz in the underground European metal scene, Eric had to return to the US and disbanded AITTALA.

In 2008, the time was right to resurrect AITTALA. From 2009 to 2022, AITTALA released 6 full-length albums: ‘Bed of Thorns’ (2009), ‘Haunt Your Flesh’ (2011), ‘Effigy’ (2014), ‘American Nightmare’ (2016), ‘False Pretenses’ (2019), ‘Live to Regret (2022) & Machines (EP 2025).

Each release showcases a natural progression of songwriting and lyrical content but retaining the core AITTALA sound and evolving it.

The current lineup of AITTALA consists of Eric Aittala on guitars/vocals and Gary ‘Zeus’ Smith (THE FIFTH, ex-MR BLACKWELL) on drums. They continue to write, record and tour to bring AITTALA to the masses.

Trois-Rivières, QC-based metal band Outlying returns with a crushing new single, “Pitch Black Serum,” the fifth track off their upcoming full-length album “Oblivisci,” set for release on November 21st. Known for their captivating, dark, aggressive, and melodic sound, Outlying delivers a haunting dose of melodic death metal that explores the venomous grip of societal defeatism and indulgent escapism.

“Pitch Black Serum” is a sonic descent into the minds of those who’ve surrendered to the numbing comforts of modern life, porn, food, and video games, while the world outside decays. Creepy, visceral, and unrelenting, the track showcases Outlying’s signature blend of melody and brutality, with lyrics penned by frontman Fred A. Dubeau and drummer Martin “Frenchy” Reithler.

The single is a powerful preview of “Oblivisci,” Latin for “to forget,” a concept album that dives deep into trauma, alienation, grief, and addiction. The record culminates in a three-part epic chronicling Fred’s personal battles with substance abuse. With no filler tracks and a commitment to emotional authenticity, Outlying aims to deliver a “no skipped tracks” experience that resonates with fans of At The Gates, Testament, Cradle Of Filth, In Flames, and Wintersun.

Formed in 2007, Outlying began as a group of high school friends jamming covers. Over time, the band evolved into a mature, focused force in melodic metal, driven by Fred’s desire to move beyond “music for musicians” and create something raw and universally felt. The current lineup, Fred, Frenchy, and bassist Charles Alex Bilodeau, came together through a series of uncanny coincidences, including a soldering iron repair and a podcast heard across the Atlantic.

“Oblivisci” was crafted through a mix of in-person riff sessions and remote collaboration while Frenchy lived in France. The band selected tracks that reflect their full range, from groove-heavy bangers to thrashy assaults, melodic interludes, and the emotionally charged finale. The album artwork depicts a post-apocalyptic version of their adopted hometown, Trois-Rivières, a nod to the city’s gritty industrial roots and its vibrant metal scene.

Live, Outlying strips away the excess. No orchestras, no overused samples, just raw energy, passion, and dynamic instrumentation. Their shows are designed to keep audiences engaged from start to finish, offering varied ambiance and moods without relying on gimmicks.

With “Oblivisci,” Outlying invites listeners to confront the darkness, feel the weight of the lyrics, and ride the adrenaline of the music. “Pitch Black Serum” is just the beginning.

“Outlying offers a solid Swedish-style melodic death metal sound with their own personal touch.” – MetalUniverse.net

“With a biting energy and a relentless intensity, [Pitch-Black Serum] hits with an uncommon ferocity while keeping a dynamic, melodic and catchy structure.” – MetalUniverse.net

“I had never heard of this band before, so I was all the more amazed by the high level of performance the band had already achieved in 2012 [Scars Of Daylight album]. They are reminiscent of Scandinavian melodic death metal bands of the late 1990s.” – Ammo-underground.at

“The three gentlemen serve us finely spun melodies; the musicians tie everything together into a flowing, detailed unity. A bit of clean vocals are sprinkled in here and there, and so a lot happens in this largely whipping smasher. A few threatening vibes and thrashy, straight-ahead tactics are also effectively employed, as is polyphonic vocals – everything just fits! Raising fists, enjoying details, headbanging – it’s a mystery to me why these all-rounders are still so unknown!” – Ammo-underground.at

Melodic and Merciless IN VIRTUE Unveils New Music Video “Desolation Throne”

New Album “Age of Legends” Out Nov 2025

Los Angeles progressive power metal band In Virtue has dropped another irresistible music video, “Desolation Throne”, in support of their long-awaited concept album “Age of Legends,” set to release on November 21st, 2025.

“Desolation Throne” is a sonic and emotional powerhouse, channeling the tortured ascent of Sisyphus to a self-made throne of darkness. Vocalist and songwriter Trey Xavier (founder of the website GearGods.net) delivers a commanding performance inspired by Symphony X’s Russell Allen, blending gritty cleans with metalcore chugging reminiscent of early Unearth and Killswitch Engage. The track’s bridge, Trey’s personal favorite moment on the album, dives deep into the character’s emotional insecurity and his destructive response to being misunderstood.

The video’s release marks a major milestone in a journey over a decade in the making. “Age of Legends” is more than an album; it’s a cathartic narrative of self-forgiveness, transformation, and rebirth. Inspired by the myth of Sisyphus, the album follows a flawed protagonist seeking redemption not from the gods, but from himself.

“It’s about releasing ourselves from guilt and regret, because until you do, you can’t do any good in the world, for yourself or anyone else,” explains Trey.

Musically, “Age of Legends” delivers a unified emotional journey, driven by thunderous riffs, infectious grooves, and cinematic layers that heighten the story’s most intense moments, not for show, but for substance. In Virtue’s signature sound, heavy, fast, melodic, catchy, and groovy, draws from influences like Soilwork, Amaranthe, Shinedown, Symphony X, and Sonata Arctica, yet carves out its own identity beyond genre conventions.

Born from a passion for power metal and a rejection of its fantasy tropes, In Virtue creates music rooted in real-world emotion, personal philosophy, and raw vulnerability.

“This album is the full realization of our sound. It’s a concept piece that casual listeners can vibe with, but those who dig deeper will find a flawed character fighting for self-forgiveness. It’s immersive, cohesive, and meant to be experienced start to finish, with headphones on and the world tuned out,” says frontman Trey.

The album’s artwork, created by Niklas Sundin (formerly of Dark Tranquillity), depicts Sisyphus breaking free from his eternal punishment, a visual metaphor for the album’s core theme of self-liberation.

Fans can immerse themselves in the world of In Virtue through the “Desolation Throne” video, an uncompromising glimpse into the soul of a band that refuses to play by the rules.

About:

Los Angeles, California’s In Virtue is a band forging a new path, abandoning outdated conceptions of what heavy music is to redefine metal for a new era. Although In Virtue was initially formed in 2004 in California’s Bay Area, the band’s rebirth in 2015 is where the real story begins.

That’s when founding guitarist Trey Xavier made the difficult decision to take over lead vocals, move south to LA, and start the band over with a new lineup. This was the catalyst they needed, and the band’s final form took shape. Adding keyboardist Alex Nasla (The Mourning, ex-Witherfall), guitarist Rami Khalaf, and bassist Jamie Hush, their new sound was freed.

“I was tired of other people singing what I was writing,” says Trey (who you may know from his popular YouTube channel). “We had some pretty good singers, but it always felt like a compromise. It was pretty scary – I was 28 and I had never seriously sung before. But all the work I put in paid off, because now I can create my music as I envision it.”

And what a vision it has become – the band’s forthcoming album Age of Legends, due out in 2025, tells a haunting tale of Sisyphean struggle and redemption through a modern lens. This new era of In Virtue brought their first new music, 2019’s single “Purgatory”, which gave the world a brand new sound. Combining elements of power metal, groove, progressive metal, and pop, but somehow sounding like none of the above, “Purgatory” defined the sonic future of the band.

The singles “Where The Edges Meet” and “Scream” followed soon after to expand on the story, each moving the story forward and bringing new life to the characters and their pain.

With way more to come on Age of Legends, In Virtue is looking forward to the next chapter and bringing their story to the world.

JULIET RUIN Channels Psychological Rebellion in Explosive New Video “Reactance Theory”

New EP “Regime” Out Oct 24th

L-R – Wesley Rands, Kent Geislinger, Jess Fleming, Jesse Bauman

Phot Credit – Brittany Lealand

Canadian metal outfit Juliet Ruin has dropped their electrifying second single and music video “Reactance Theory,” off their upcoming EP “Regime,” set to release November 7, 2025. Known for their genre-fluid blend of chunky riffs, soaring melodies, and emotionally raw lyricism, Juliet Ruin is back with what may be their most collaborative and high-energy track to date.

“Reactance Theory” explores the psychological concept coined by Jack Brehm, which explains why people resist threats to their personal freedom. The song dives into the dopamine-fueled impulses that drive rebellion, wrapped in a belted, catchy vocal performance that came together in a moment of serendipity. Vocalist Jess Fleming mistook the verses for the chorus during the writing process, resulting in a track that’s relentlessly energetic from start to finish.

“This song came together with a lot of input from each member. Wes brought in the initial hook guitar lead, and we built it piece by piece. It’s probably one of the most collaboratively written songs we’ve ever done,” says the band.

The accompanying music video amplifies the song’s themes with visceral visuals and dynamic performance shots, capturing the band’s signature live energy and studio-tight execution.

Formed in 2015, Edmonton, AB’s Juliet Ruin has steadily carved out a space in the modern metal scene with a sound described in five words: chunky, groovy, pretty, powerful, and catchy. Drawing influence from Spiritbox, Jinjer, Scion, and Alexisonfire, the band continues to evolve, growing heavier, more technical, and more emotionally resonant with each release.

Their upcoming EP “Regime” is a five-track journey through vulnerability, empowerment, and social reflection. From the introspective depths of “Chrysalis” and “Poems by a Poltergeist” to the explosive title track “Regime,” the EP balances brutal breakdowns with pop-infused melodies and unfiltered emotion. The artwork, created by Feen Murray, uses abstract imagery of skulls and hearts to reflect the tension between emotionality and overthinking.

“This EP is everyone’s favorite so far. We’ve struck a good balance between our heaviest subject matter and our most vulnerable moments,” the band shares.

Juliet Ruin’s writing process is deeply collaborative, with guitarists crafting riffs and Jess shaping them into emotionally raw songs drawn from her personal journals. Live, the band delivers a high-octane performance that rivals their studio recordings, with Jess’s vocals standing out for their precision and passion.

Fans can catch Juliet Ruin live at their upcoming release shows, featuring guest bassist Dale Myroniuk (Dahlmers Realm, Breaking the Silent). With “Regime,” Juliet Ruin continues to push boundaries, offering catharsis through crushing riffs and soaring choruses.

“If you are a fan of the likes of JINJER, INFECTED RAIN, THE AGONIST and BUTCHER BABIES then the “Dark Water” E.P is one for you to check out. The E.P opens with the title track “Dark Water” as a ferocious riff creeps in as the rhythm section sounds away. From then the band are now in full swing as the very haunting sounding vocals coming in. The song leads to a sing along chorus with a cool lead line afterwards. When the breakdown hits the vocals add a sort of dreamy feel to it until the guitar solo sections kick in. Great way to start things off.” 8/10 – Metal Temple (2023 – Dark Water EP)

““Dark Water” by JULIET RUIN is a great listen and one I really enjoyed. From listening the vocals have a lot of range as Jess goes from hauntingly clean to aggressive death growls. The band has a very modern sound that is filled with great riffing and killer grooves. The songs here are great and you can hear their influences at times too. This is a band that, from listening to this, sounds like they need to be experienced in a live setting and I would love to hear more from them in the future.” – Metal Temple (2023 – Dark Water EP)

“As mentioned, Juliet Ruin is not a stranger to attention and praise and can expect a lot more with Dark Water. It is their most striking offering yet and with the new evolution in the band’s already potent sound, surely the first step to greater things.” – The RingMaster Review (2023 – Dark Water EP)

“Bang your heads to the new EP by this amazing Canadian Modern Metal crew, reflecting a turn to darker sounds and grittier vocals while still preserving the spirit of what makes the band who they are.” – The Headbanging Moose (2023 – Dark Water EP)

“Bloody love it! One of the best EPs I’ve heard this year so far. ” – Ever Metal (2023 – Dark Water EP)

AITTALA Announces Second EP of 2025 “Ill-Gotten Gains”; Unveils Music Video “Isolation”

EP Out Nov 21st via Exitus Stratagem Records

AITTALA Lineup – Gary ‘Smith’ Zeus (Drums), Eric Aittala (Guitar/Vox)

Genre-blurring metal duo AITTALA (pronounced “EYE-tah-la”) returns with their latest and second EP of 2025, “Ill-Gotten Gains,” dropping November 21, 2025, via Exitus Stratagem Records. The EP’s lead single, “Isolation,” is accompanied by a gripping music video that captures the emotional weight and sonic depth of the track.

“Isolation” sets the tone for the EP with its doomy atmosphere, heavy guitars, and unexpected time signature shifts. Lyrically, it explores the consequences of past decisions, a theme that runs throughout the entire release.

Watch and listen to the music video via its premiere on Doom & Stoned HERE.

“Ill-Gotten Gains,” AITTALA’s second EP of 2025 following Machines, marks a bold step forward in the band’s evolution. Retaining their core sound while pushing deeper into lyrical vulnerability and songwriting complexity, the EP continues their tradition of defying genre boundaries — weaving together elements of traditional metal, doom, groove, and progressive styles into a cohesive and immersive experience. Thematically, it explores the darker side of the human psyche, from chaos and exploitation to the consequences of those actions and the search for redemption, offering a cathartic journey for fans of genre-fluid metal.

The EP cover features an updated rendering of AITTALA’s long-standing mascot Frank, a cartoon pig head in a pentagram, first introduced in 2014’s “Effigy” album. Frank is the kind of character who’ll help you acquire “Ill-Gotten Gains” no questions asked, as long as you’ve got the cash.

Formed in 1991 in the Netherlands by guitarist/vocalist Eric Aittala, the band quickly became a fixture in the Dutch metal scene, sharing stages with acts like The Gathering and Sadist. After a long hiatus, AITTALA was resurrected in 2008 and has since released six full-length albums and multiple EPs, each showcasing a unique blend of classic heavy metal, doom, progressive, power, thrash, and hard rock. Now based in the U.S., AITTALA’s current lineup features Eric Aittala and powerhouse drummer Gary “Zeus” Smith (THE FIFTH, ex-MR BLACKWELL). Together, they continue to push boundaries with music that’s as technically sharp as it is emotionally resonant.

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – October 13, 2025

Reminder – Deadline October 15th

ARMSTRONG METALFEST Opens Band Submissions For 2026 Lineup – The Okanagan’s Ultimate Mountain Mosh Pit Returns

“It’s one of the premier festivals of its kind in Canada, showcasing the biggest names in local, national, and international heavy metal music.” – Vancouver Sun

Following a landmark celebration of 15 years of extreme metal in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, marked by record-breaking attendance and its most triumphant edition yet, ARMSTRONG METALFEST is officially set to return in 2026 on July 17th and 18th at the Hassen Arena, for two days of moshing, headbanging, and camping.

Armstrong MetalFest’s 15th year of mountain moshing roared to life with a powerhouse 2025 lineup featuring BORN OF OSIRIS, HAVOK, GLYPH, RIOT CITY, THE BROWNING, VIRVUM, and many more heavy hitters from across Canada and beyond. On July 11th and 12th, the town of Armstrong, BC, was transformed into a metal haven, complete with Yeti Games, the Metal Madness Market, and the chaos of Thrash Wrestling.

Armstrong MetalFest has also released a promotional video that traces its journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Canada’s premier metal festivals in British Columbia. Watch the full recap here: https://youtu.be/47QjFrOHLv8

Band submissions for the 2026 edition of Armstrong MetalFest will end on October 15th, inviting artists to become part of the next chapter in the festival’s legendary legacy.

Interested bands can apply through the official portal: https://armstrongmetalfest.ca/band-submissions/

“To close the night and the weekend, Born of Osiris delivered a high-octane headline set that tore the roof off. It was the perfect finale to an unforgettable weekend. When the last note rang out, it hit us — AMF 2025 was coming to a close. There’s always that bittersweet feeling as you start packing up. But that’s the beauty of this festival: it stays with you long after the amps cool down. Every year, Armstrong Metalfest brings together a community that truly loves heavy music. It’s not just about bands and beer — it’s about belonging. The friends you make, the moments you live, the memories that stick — they’re why we keep coming back. If you’ve never been to AMF, consider this your sign. It’s more than a music festival—it’s a metal rite of passage. Once you go, it gets into your blood. We’re already counting the days until the next one.” – Stan Schinners of Broken Neck Radio / Absolute Underground Magazine (Live Review AMF 2025)

Tickets for AMF 2026 will be announced at a later date, granting general admission and access to the festival grounds, camping area, and arena from 9:00 AM on Friday, July 17, 2026, until 10:00 AM on Sunday, July 18, 2026. Free camping is included.

Please Note: Camping – RV / Non-Hookup RV / Vehicle Passes: Make sure to reserve your vehicle spot to get the best location on the grounds. A fee is required for a weekend pass per vehicle in addition to your day or weekend pass. RV hookups include water and power. If you choose to park your vehicle outside the camping area in the main parking lot, then a vehicle pass is not required.

About:

Since its inception in 2009 (with a brief hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), West Metal Entertainment and Armstrong MetalFest have championed hundreds of local bands while welcoming renowned international acts to the quiet town of Armstrong, British Columbia.

Every year, metalheads from across Canada and the U.S. converge on the scenic Okanagan Valley for three days of camping and two days packed with heavy metal mayhem. Under the blazing summer sun, fans revel in live performances, wrestling spectacles, scavenger hunts, and reconnecting with their extended metal family.

Armstrong MetalFest has hosted legendary headliners like Kataklysm, Cattle Decapitation, Archspire, Nekrogoblikon, Origin, Rivers of Nihil, Warbringer, Fallujah, Striker, and Beyond Creation, alongside rising stars from across North America. And when the final riff fades, the festival vanishes without a trace, leaving the landscape as untouched as it was before.

West Metal Entertainment, a non-profit society, not only produces Armstrong MetalFest annually but also supports the regional music scene by organizing performances at various venues, including all-ages shows, to inspire musical passion in both youth and adults.

Canadian deathcore outfit Dawn Vally has dropped their latest single, “Graves,” a punishing, raw track that marks a new chapter in the band’s evolution. Formed in 2007 by twin brothers Jeff (bass) and Joe Bartolo (drums), Dawn Vally has built a reputation for delivering aggressive, high-intensity music that blends metalcore and deathcore with fearless originality.

“Graves” is the second single from the band’s upcoming EP, slated for release in early 2026. It’s also the first recording to feature new vocalist Zac Emmons, formerly the guitarist of hardcore band Pound Of Flesh. Zac joined the band earlier this year, bringing a visceral lyrical style rooted in personal experience.

“Graves lyrically is a song about betrayal and the emotions that come with it. I went into a dark place in my mind to get the words,” says Zac.

Musically, “Graves” builds on the foundation laid by their previous album, “Blueprints of the 416,” but pushes the intensity even further. With punishing breakdowns and relentless energy, the track is already being hailed as Dawn Vally’s heaviest release to date.

The single’s artwork, created by Paul Padgett of Eightfold Visuals, features a horror-tinged jailhouse setting that perfectly complements the song’s themes of emotional confinement and rage.

Dawn Vally’s sound is a collaborative effort, shaped by the eclectic influences of its members. While metalcore and deathcore dominate, the band draws from jazz, classic rock, and hardcore to create a sonic landscape that’s both brutal and nuanced. Guitarist Antonio Bratta, a classically trained musician with a jazz background, adds a unique layer to the band’s dynamic compositions.

With plans to expand their reach across Canada in 2026, Dawn Vally is preparing for tours both out west and east. Their live shows promise the same raw energy and sonic devastation that fans have come to expect.

For fans of Whitechapel, Parkway Drive, BMTH, and Hatebreed, Dawn Vally is a band that doesn’t just play metal; they live it.

“Graves” is now streaming on all major platforms, along with its music video filmed and created by Brett and Hayley Wright, who have worked with other artists such as LÜZR, Seagrave, and CRUELINTENT.

0 This Halloween, Avant-Garde Prog Doom LIMINAL SPIRIT Will Unleash An EP Séance “Unwell”; Streaming Title Track

This Halloween, Avant-Garde Prog Doom LIMINAL SPIRIT Will Unleash An EP Séance “Unwell”; Streaming Title Track

Photo – Jerry Hauppa – Liminal Spirit

This Halloween, Milwaukee’s solo project Liminal Spirit unveils its most intense and cinematic offering to date: “Unwell,” a five-track EP that plunges deep into themes of memory, guilt, and spiritual reckoning. Helmed by multi-instrumentalist Jerry Hauppa (also known for his work with Deorbit), the release fuses progressive doom metal with avant-garde narrative techniques, crafting what Hauppa describes as “seance music”, a genre-defying sonic ritual meant to stir movement between spiritual realms. Adding to its eerie and otherworldly atmosphere, three of the tracks were composed using microtonal guitars, lending the EP a distinct sense of unease and spectral depth.

“Unwell” follows the story of Phillip, an elderly dementia patient confined to a nursing home, haunted by the spirits of two children who claim he murdered them decades ago. As Phillip’s mind unravels, the music mirrors his psychological collapse, shifting from jazz-inspired calm to microtonal chaos and oppressive distortion. The EP culminates in Phillip’s death and spiritual judgment, casting him into hell in a chilling epilogue.

The lead single and title track captures Phillip’s inner turmoil and identity crisis. Composed on microtonal guitars, the song’s alien tonalities and increasing distortion reflect his fractured mental state. “Unwell” is a sonic embodiment of isolation and existential dread, setting the tone for the EP’s descent into darkness.

“My goal with this record is to explore ideas that represent some of my greatest fears. Having worked in nursing homes, I’ve seen firsthand how miserable they can be. The thought of losing my faculties and facing spiritual judgment terrifies me—and that’s what I wanted to capture,” says Hauppa.

Liminal Spirit is the solo endeavor of Jerry Hauppa, known for his work in Deorbit and the Milwaukee metal scene. The project fuses doom metal with cinematic storytelling, drawing influence from Skepticism, Anata, My Bloody Valentine, Jesu, and Confessor—though Hauppa insists Liminal Spirit sounds like none of them. With roots in old-school death metal and a growing interest in psychedelic electronic music, Liminal Spirit continues to push sonic boundaries.
