EPK – Varius – Concordance (2021) (EP)

Publicist – Jon Asher – jon[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

“We are very excited to present our new EP, Concordance, the strongest Varius release to date. Concordance represents Varius at its most collaborative; each member of the band has brought a unique song to the table. The result is an EP defined by both its diversity and its consistency in spirit. We were all very motivated to bring each others’ visions to life, and the tracks came together as some of our heaviest and grooviest to date. Each of Concordance’s four songs are rooted firmly in their own area of the metal spectrum, and they are as varied lyrically as they are musically. Concordance explores themes of battle, demonic magics, psychological challenges, and a bleak look at the future of death. We believe that all types of metal fans, and fans of fantasy and science fiction alike, are sure to find something they like about Concordance.” – Varius

“it’s full of dynamic surprises — a song that’s bombastic and brazen, savage and scintillating, mysterious and magnificent — and its name is “Concordance of the Legionfall“.” – No Clean Singing

“One thing I know for sure is that they’re great. The guitar riffs are tasty, it’s plenty heavy, energetic vocals and gnarly rhythms encompass the sound of Varius.” – Technical Music Review

“One of the bands taking over my playlists these days are the beasts of VARIUS with their heavy mix of progressive melodic metal. Full of crushing instrumental progressions, deep growling vocals, and a number of quirks, their chuggy calculated riffs create an interesting song dynamic which keeps me coming back for more.” – Blessed Altar Zine

“Varius hits hard with a blend of traditional groove and progressively heavy metal. [Each of their songs] brings something slightly different to the table, showcasing their embrace of fast paced guitar groove, progressive song structure, and mix of traditional and unorthodox instrumental combinations.” – Heavy Metal Sasquatch

======================================

Quick Facts about Varius:

1. Varius decided to build the Concordance EP around the concept of each member of the band bringing one unique song to the table. Recording this EP for them was a fun process of each getting to play “producer” for their own songs, bringing in ideas from the rest of the band to really bring their visions to life.

 2. Varius’ efforts in the years leading up to Concordance have paid off by landing the band some higher-profile shows in their local Niagara area, allowing them to share the stage with more popular touring acts including Beyond Creation, Ninjaspy, and The Anchor.

 3.  Varius vocalist Joey Scaringi is a popular radio host for 97.7 HTZ FM. Joey’s effort and enthusiasm have helped him pave the way to getting more heavy metal bands, both famous and local, some radio airplay during his segments.

4. Concordance was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Eddie Lucciola of 414 Recordings. Eddie is a talented up-and-coming engineer and producer who also develops digital plugins with Kiive Audio. Eddie’s expertise in engineering contributed massively to putting Concordance together.

5. Varius has always taken an open-minded and experimental approach to the way they do things. Before their vocalist Joey joined the band, their audience got to know them as an instrumental group. Several of their early performances featured their bass player Joel’s cousin Vanessa playing keyboards to help fill out the sound!

======================================

Track By Track Explained by Varius:

1. Golden Crown – This song represents something completely different as far as what our audience would expect of us. It is the EP’s most straightforward track and is a mid-tempo wall of sound. It has a more classic-metal kind of sound, but with almost Amon Amarth-style vocals. The calmer intro gives way to a massive chord-based riff, and the song progresses into an epic guitar solo and dynamic build to through the outro. Lyrically, the song touches on themes of battle, loyalty, and brotherhood. The lyrics were influenced by the concept of ancient warriors who lived and died by the sword and battled for their brothers in arms rather than glory and wealth.

2. Concordance of the Legionfall – This track dives back into traditional Varius territory with its chaotic but exciting structure. There are plenty of groovy riffs as well as several dynamic shifts and trippy moments. The guitar parts and vocals in particular shine on this song and keep the listener occupied as the track goes through its many movements. There are tinges of black and death metal in this track, with progressive twists and psychedelic-sounding transitions. The song concludes as it began, with raging guitar sweeps and brutal vocals. Lyrically, the song describes themes of evil and black magic. The concept was to tell a story of powerful warlocks defeating legions of demons by using their dark powers to “fight fire with fire”. This fictional concept was influenced by the video game World of Warcraft, which some of us in the band are great fans of.

3. Lament of Dissonance – This song is a bit of a balance between a relatively straightforward groove track and an experimental piece. The song begins with melodic guitars before descending into a crushing groove riff in the verses. This song has the most traditional chorus part of any Varius song to date and incorporates a little bit of clean backing vocals. After the first few verses, the song gives way into even more crushing riffs and a strong guitar solo. The end of the song transitions into one of our signature Varius experimental moments, which takes the listener through a jazzy outro. Lyrically, the song describes a brilliant creative person cracking under the pressure of expectations of his audience. The song takes a personal perspective from this individual and describes the burden of living up to the demands of a hungry audience.

4. Gut Shoveler – This track is almost structured as if it were two songs in one. It begins with furious death metal and thrash-influenced guitar riffs before transitioning into a lower-tempo, nearly-doom metal groove featuring church organ sounds. The song’s dynamics go through the motions from slamming metal to atmospheric, ambient and acoustic sounds by the end of the song as it fades out and concludes the Concordance EP. The lyrics discuss a potential dystopian future in which planet Earth is so overpopulated that cannibalism becomes a normality. In fact, the song is sung from the perspective of a hypothetical human-meat factory worker. Songs about fictional apocalyptic futures have been a theme on previous Varius releases, and Gut Shoveler stands out as the most brutal example yet.

Varius are a Canadian band inspired by a diversity of heavy music. Varius’ powerful sound features an experimental fusion of aggressive guitar and vocals along with deep rhythms and exotic atmospheres.

Unable to be defined by a single genre, Varius’ take on heavy music is characterized by vocalist Joey Scaringi’s diverse range, guitarist Patrick Forlin’s signature groove riffing and melodic catchiness along with Joel Tassillo’s thick bass foundation, underscored by drummer Vlad Prokhorov’s genre-crossing rhythmic pulse and power.

Varius released their debut EP “Red Messenger” in 2017. The following EP “The Great Tribulation (2019) saw Varius performing to wider audiences across southern Canada and appearing at shows with international touring acts including Beyond Creation and others. Varius also released the single and accompanying music video for “P.I.S.S.” in 2019 and now have new music to unleash in 2021 with their new EP “Concordance”.

Due out during Fall 2021, “Concordance” is all about both diversity and consistency. As a band, Varius were motivated to include four distinct tracks with each one primarily written by a different band member. The result was a naturally diverse recording. Despite taking this approach, Concordance can still be considered their most collaborative release to date. Once each member of the band presented their song, that song belonged to Varius as a whole, and they did their best to support the original vision. That kind of teamwork lead the EP to be just as consistent in sound as it is diverse. Concordance is a heavy offering throughout, but the four distinct songs approach the heaviness in different ways. Across the four tracks, the listener can expect to hear the influence of death metal, thrash, progressive, doom, and classic metal with experimental dynamic twists. The EP is as diverse lyrically as it is musically; fans of fiction, fantasy, horror, and humanity will find something that they like in Concordance. From the apocalyptic themes you’d expect from Varius in Gut Shoveler and Concordance of the Legionfall to the more reflective stories of battle (Golden Crown) and personal struggle (Lament of Dissonance), Concordance covers a variety of heavy lyric themes that listeners can connect to.

“Concrodance” is due out on November 5th, 2021.

Newfoundland Black Metal Duo Artach Shares Chilling Lyric Video “Ice Throne”

New Album “Sworn to Avenge” Out Now! via Depressive Illusions Records

Canada, St. John’s, Newfoundland’s black metal duo Artach unleashed their latest album “Sworn to Avenge” this past June via Depressive Illusions Records. Heavily influenced by nature and the bleak climate they are surrounded by in the cold frozen north, the band is also inspired by sci-fi fiction, one series, in particular, is Stargate SG-1, which inspired their latest lyric video for the chilling “Ice Throne”.

“This one is inspired by the technologies of the ancients left behind in the Arctic and discovered by the Stargate SG-1 team. It’s fairly self-descriptive and a fan of the show would recognize some of the ideas.” adds the band.

Watch and listen to the lyric video “Ice Throne” – https://youtu.be/jJmKNXIKkXg

“Sworn to Avenge” is the second album from Artach, following up 2020’s “Chronicles of a Black Winter”. Fans can expect more of the same compared to the first, but it pushes the envelope a little bit. Artach embraces evolution and aspire to play tighter, and have a more professional sound, but never sound overly polished.

Artach’s process is a collaborative one between the duo, the genesis of the songs are arranged on guitar by Sruthán and very roughly recorded at home. After getting together, they record drums and flesh out the song in an afternoon and by then the song is pretty much ready for the studio recording of guitars, then bass, and lastly vocals.

Artach is recommended listening for anyone interested in raw black metal and those with an interest in Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, and Satyricon.

“Sworn to Avenge” is available via Depressive Illusions Records at the following links: DepressiveIllusions.com, Artach.bandcamp.com, Amazon, Spotify.

About:
Artach is a two-man black metal band (Sruthán: Guitar/Bass, Fíochmhar: Battery/Vokills/Keys)based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Being from the foggiest, snowiest, wettest, windiest, and gloomiest capital city in Canada, one should not be surprised that this fuels the creation of Black Metal. Their inspiration comes from the land, nature, the bleak weather of the Canadian North, and influential black metal bands.

Since the duo’s formation in the spring of 2019, Artach has been consistently releasing new music. The band’s debut album “Chronicles of a Black Winter” was released digitally during February 2020 and later unleashed on physical CD by Depressive Illusions Records. The full length contained 9 songs of extreme, harsh, and haunting sounds, which included a cover of Celtic Frost’s ‘Jewel Throne’.

Now in 2021, the band returns with their next offering “Sworn To Avenge”, a full-length scourge of raw and relentless bruting gloom. From the calming blasts and savagery of album opener “Tuiteam an Duine” to the ingrained black metal blast beats, and headbanging riffage on “Shimmer” to the 20-minute exploration for the epic “Endless Tundra” about the doomed Franklin expedition of 1846 to the Immortal-esque riffing and unorthodox exorcism of album closer “Winter’s End”, Artach delivers a 65-minute cold deliverance of their surroundings.

The band adds:

“The music on ‘Sworn To Avenge’ is a frigid mixture of topics about nature and how it meets and interacts with the darkness of humankind. The desolation of the world, the planet, and the repeated failure of society to evolve to a place where we are a part of nature and not brutish subjugators of everything in our path… these are all themes described throughout many songs. The music is angry, savage, unhinged, but contains melody and some twists and turns to surprise the listener. Varied song tempos mixing blasting with thrashy, punky, doomy elements keep the sounds interesting and not monotone. Song structures often vary and we never limit a song to a certain length. We indulge and have them be as long, or as short as we think feels right.”

“Sworn To Avenge” will be available digitally from Artach along with CD and cassette via Depressive Illusions Records on June 25, 2021.

– 30 –

“The song (She Gathers Leaves) is a thrill-ride, but also reveals elements of gothic witchiness. The raw vocals are caught up in a paroxysm of fierce, crazed adoration, venting cold-blooded roars as well as braying, throat-stripping howls and cut-throat screams. The full-throttle drumming is tumultuous, a changing array that hammers, gallops, rocks, thunders, and blasts. Urgently rising chords provide a recurring theme, surrounded by flame-throwing riffs that dart, pulsate, and spasm, drawing on elements of thrash and classic heavy metal as well as black metal. Ecstatically swirling leads further add to the wildness of the song. A mood of mystery does surface in the track’s brief intro, and that mood surfaces again in the song’s back half, leading into a necromantic guitar solo that takes flight in scintillating fashion.” – No Clean Singing

“check out Artach for a truly epic journey into the wildernesses that populate the dark fantasy land conjured through their excellent music. This sophomore album tells me that this is a band that will be releasing much good material for years to come and will soon be headlining the epic black metal stages or charts both online and at festivals. An excellent job all round.” – Metal Rules

“”Sworn to Avenge is a mind-assaulting record… You’ll hear the influences of classic black metal bands like Venom, early-Bathory as well as elements of the second wave; Immortal, Darkthrone etc. Ugly and uninviting stuff but very satisfying if you enjoy the gloomier side of metal… It’s a mammoth listen and does take its toll, but the array of ideas that Artach showcase does keep things interesting. An hour slips by, the cold has sunk deep into the bones and you’ll be left wondering if you’ll ever be warm again.” – Games, Brrraaains And A Head-Banging Life

“Very melodic black metal, yet aggressive and heavy with undeniable influences from plain old straightforward heavy metal, so while things are definitely “black metal”, there’s a lot of discipline at play and this is definitely not your average raw, chaotic black metal. There’s order to the chaos on Sworn to Avenge, but that doesn’t prevent it from being aggressive and sometimes kind of depressing and melancholic despite not descending into the slower playing usually associated with those stylings. It’s a rollercoaster of “fuck yeah!” and “kill me now” (in sort of a good way).” – The Metal Crypt

“Now for some blackened thrash from Canada’s Artach, a band with an unusual take on the genre and a very unique sound. The good news is that if you’re a thrash fan you’re going to like this album. The even better news is that if you’re a blackened thrash fan you’re going to love this album. All of your favourite elements are present, plenty of riffs, a great blend between groove, rawness and aggression and raw, high energy vocals. There is something for everyone here which is why I can see the album having a broad appeal.” – Cavedweller Music

Fathom Farewell is melodic metalcore hailing from New England, USA. They have a fourth EP coming out this year, the much anticipated “Kraken” and they are introducing it with the crushing single “Eulogy”. The band shares some insight into what is, instrumentally, the heaviest song they have ever written:

“Lyrically this song is entirely about what can happen when someone with mental health issues goes far too long without getting help.  The first verse describes desperate cries for help dampened by a great deal of self doubt and anxiety.  The second verse delves into the aggression and sadness that can develop and the third and final verse (breakdown) ultimately delves into the deterioration of the person due to a lack of assistance.”

The EP “Kraken” is a series of waves from start to finish varying in intensity, grit and feel from song to song, with the intention of leaving the listener feeling as though the mythological ocean beast has taken them on a wild and terrifying ride through their emotions toward a place of inner reflection and peace.

To the band, the name Fathom Farewell means either a watery grave or contemplating goodbye. The content of the songs is in many ways metaphorical so this name is an ironic description of the mind drifting to the place where it allows them to believe that giving up is acceptable when in their hearts they know it isn’t.

Over the years, Fathom Farewell has definitely made a name for themselves having shared the stage with bands such as Sevendust, Devil Wears Prada, AFI and Hatebreed and played at festivals including Van’s Warped Tour and New England Metal and Hardcore Fest.

This precise blend of melody and heavy is suitable for all metalcore fans, especially those with an interest in Northlane, Killswitch Engage, and August Burns Red.

The lyric video for “Eulogy” can watched and heard via its premiere on NewFuryMedia HERE.

“Kraken” will be out on October 22, 2021.

About:
Fathom Farewell brings depth to the rock/metal genre beyond the confines of its articulate instrumentation and vocal presence. Addressing topics from humanity and its relationships to the grave consequences human nature causes our world, frontman Alex Cohen demands through his delivery that each listener lend a close ear and a willingness toward self-reflection.  This fiery passion results in a refined rock act with the potential to be the voice of change, but with the live thrill and precision of a modern heavy metal act. In conjunction with exceptional work ethic and persistence, it’s no wonder the band has swiftly made a name for itself throughout New England, having earned the opportunities to support Sevendust’s 20th-anniversary tour, along with area dates with Issues, The Devil Wears Prada, Volumes, I Prevail, Currents, and many more.  The band has also performed four times at the Vans Warped Tour in MA since forming in 2014, three times at New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, and made appearances at Rock and Shock Festival. Following the release of the 2019 “Consume The Earth” EP, the band has accrued over 100k streams across Spotify and Apple Music.  Bolstered by recent additions to the newly completed lineup and with upcoming new material produced by Chris Piquette (Trophy Wives/Riviera), with assistance from Extreme Management Group, Fathom Farewell aims to support this release with vigorous touring and marketing in hopes of carrying awareness of its message to the rest of its home country and eventually to the world, as all of “this planet is our home”.

Now with three EPs under their belt over four years “Consume The Earth” (2019), “Decomposition” (2017), Drowning Limits (2015), the band is ready to present their next EP entitled “Kraken” on October 22nd, 2021 via Blood Blast Distribution.

What the press is saying:

“The immediate impact and versatile clean to scream ability from vocalist Alex Cohen pushes Fathom Farewell out above the hordes – the man has some serious pipes ready for the challenge, forceful and commanding while confidently holding out key notes during the verses and choruses to make “Six Feet Beneath” and “Wide Awake” instant appealers.” – Dead Rhetoric

“The Boston quartet have emerged from within the melodic metalcore scene but as the six tracks within their latest offering shows, their sound is a far more adventurous and varied blend of metal and melodic rock enterprise.” – The Ringmaster Review

“Holy vocals! Worcester based Fathom Farewell have just released “Consume the Earth”, and it’s blowing our minds…  Palpably driven, passionate, and sharing messages close to their heart, “Consume the Earth” is an impressive invitation to listen to Fathom Farewell.” – Depth Magazine

“Fathom Farewell: One of the fastest rising stars” – Permafrost Today

“Featuring six tracks of high-energy and emotionally-driven modern hard rock/metal, the EP shows why Fathom Farewell are one of the fastest rising stars in the melodic metalcore scene.” – Moshville Times

Recorded at The Groove Factory (Udine, Italy) and Line/Out Studio (Milano, Italy) with mixing and mastering by Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis, Temperance, Kaledon), the full length will feature ten tracks of symphonic and power prog metal plus will see the band introduce new elements and experimentation into their sound. The album goes from power metal songs like “The Way Of Time” and “My Soul Sad Until Death” to heavy and dark ones like “Rain and Red Death Masquerade”, passing through the catchy melodies of tracks like “Glide In The Air” and acoustic moments on “Lonely and Firefly”. The main theme that inspired the record is the concept of time.

“It has been a long time since our last full length was released, we took our time to make the best songs possible and then the pandemic broke in and forced us to stop and wait for the right time to publish it. But now everything is ready and we can’t wait to finally share this with you all.” adds the band.

Today, Eternal Silence unveils their lyric video for the third single and closing album track “Red Death Masquerade”. It’s a heavy and symphonic track featuring dual vocalists alternating verses to the story of the song.

The band explains “Red Death Masquerade” in further detail:

“This song is inspired by the horror tale “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe. The main character appears only at the end of this story, but we can feel her presence all the time: the Death overcomes the weak and the powerful, immune to time and space. This reminds us that we are born and we die equal to each other.”

Formed in Varese, Italy in 2008, Eternal Silence combines powerful guitar riffs, a thunderous rhythmic section, catchy melodies, and bombastic orchestral tracks with the support of two vocalists, Marika Vanni and guitarist Alberto Cassina sharing the front stage. The band’s current line-up is completed by Alessio Sessa (bass), Andrea Zannin (drums) and Enzo Criscuolo (guitarist).

Since their formation, the band has unleashed three albums and two EPs. 2020’s “Renegades” (EP), 2018’s “Metamorphosis” (EP), and 2017’s “Mastermind Tyranny” were released on Sliptrick Records, and their earlier full-lengths “Raw Poetry” (2013) and “Chasing Chimera” (2015) were released on Underground Symphony Records.

Over the years, the band has been a consistent touring presence in Europe, performing in Germany, Switzerland, France, Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy, and Hungary along with being support for bands such as Temperance, Therion, Haggard, Sound Storm, Blackoustic (Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius) and Jani Liimatainen (Insomnium)).

Ottawa’s Infrared are a blast from the past with their genuine 80s sound. They first hit the Canadian metal scene in 1986 with their demo, but shortly after, went on a very long hiatus. In 2014, they reformed and since then have put out two full-lengths and an EP with another full-length “From the Black Swamp” on the horizon for this Autumn.

The first single off this new album is the title track, a dark and classic tune that is themed in betrayal and abuse by those closest to you. The band further explains their epic song:

“From the Black Swamp is a metal lover’s delight. It has all the elements of a classic thrash metal song, with a big intro, ripping riffs, mid-tempo verses, big bridge, and an epic outro. At just over six minutes, you won’t find yourself revisiting familiar territory to the point of being too repetitive. This song is about the insidious form of psychological abuse perpetrated on one victim after another. Hook your prey, then taunt and torture them over the long term all while betraying them in such a cruel fashion that if not caught in time and defended against, will surely destroy you. Only truth can save you.”

Infrared started as many bands do, with a love for playing music that they loved and in this case, it was Metallica’s “Kill ‘Em All”, from which Kirk Gidley (guitar) and Armin Kamal (vocals/guitar) were inspired to write Infrared’s first single “No Peace”. Shortly after, they found locals Alain Groulx (drums) and Shawn Thompson (bass) and the lineup was set. Now, they are stoked to be bringing this new album to ears around the world and show they are still producing high-quality 80s thrash metal 35 years later.

Considerable amounts of experience work well for the band, who hold their own on stage and have a lot of fun playing and involving the audience, they are no stranger to the stage having played with a myriad of thrash legends including Sacrifice both before and after their hiatus. They are hungry to hit the stage once more when the time comes but until then, fans will have to enjoy this new album.

Anyone with a penchant for 80s metal will get a kick out of the latest from Infrared, especially fans of Slayer, Metallica, and Testament.

The video for “From the Black Swamp” can be viewed and heard at https://youtu.be/Crxh_Fwyb7E

The entirety of the album will be released on September 30, 2021.

About:
If Infrared sounds like classic thrash metal, that’s because they are! And rightfully so since they were making music as teenagers in the mid to late 80s back when the Big 4 (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax) were just becoming famous. They literally lived and breathed that scene as it was happening and garnered national attention in Canada through their song and video for Thoughts Caught (in Between).

Then….life happened and members took different paths and the music, that was hot in the underground metal scene and loved by demo tape traders near and far, went dormant for 27 years! In 2014 Infrared reunited with 3 of the original 4 members (Kirk, Armin, and Alain), and since original bassist Shawn Thompson had moved to Miami, they recruited Mike Forbes. They worked hard to release their first full-length album, No Peace (2016), featuring songs written all those years ago. 2018 saw Infrared release their sophomore album, Saviours, featuring 8 new songs coming in at just over 50 minutes of music! That was followed up by their 2019 EP, Back to the Warehouse featuring the last of their 80’s written songs and released as a bridge to their next full-length album. Now, in 2021, Infrared release their most mature album yet, From the Black Swamp. The album features 12 songs for one hour of hard-hitting and emotionally charged songs steeped in the themes of betrayal and malicious sabotage in all walks of life, from societal to interpersonal. With several high-profile concerts under their belts including opening for Anvil, Sacrifice, Razor, Venom Inc., Dirkschneider, Flotsam and Jetsam, DBC, E-Force, and Atrophy, Infrared raises their horns and looks forward to getting out there to meet and befriend metal lovers everywhere!
