0 The Metal Crypt – Accursed Spawn – The Virulent Host (PRC Music) – “The Virulent Host one of those albums on which you discover something new on a regular basis, which helps keep it fresh… One hell of a debut and one that sets expectations high for the next album. Oops!”

  • · Accursed Spawn

What makes The Virulent Host fun and interesting to listen to is how much they have going on “behind the scenes”. More often than not you’ll find the guitars doing something a little bit more intricate in the background—something you can easily miss if you’re not paying close attention—and this really gives the songs another dimension. It can be a guitar going on a speedfest of its own or kicking it down a notch for a little bit of melody… The Virulent Host one of those albums on which you discover something new on a regular basis, which helps keep it fresh. Mind you, even if it weren’t for that, just the “basic” death metal elements in here slay like there’s no tomorrow and there’s more than enough here to fuck yourself up trying to headbang to it for 41 minutes. One hell of a debut and one that sets expectations high for the next album. Oops!

SHORT BIO

In the wilderness of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada, with a fascination for astronomy, Kevin Thiessen (guitar), Daniel Airth (guitar), Colin Righton (percussion), and Ferdy Belland (bass) united to create the interplanetary, instrumental prog metal that would come to be known as Phaeton.

Since 2017, they have been working quickly as a collaborative unit, honing their skills and orchestrating an attention-focused listening experience. One drenched in joy and wonder and the emotional, visceral release that only prog-metal can deliver. And the lack of lyrical interference only allows the listener the better opportunity to let their imaginations run wild with the music, drifting emotionally away on the solar winds to wherever they wish to soar.

Phaeton can be experienced with the release of the self titled debut album out now as of December 21, 2018.

LONG BIO

In the wilderness of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada, with a fascination for astronomy, Kevin Thiessen (guitar), Daniel Airth (guitar), Colin Righton (percussion), and Ferdy Belland (bass) united to create the interplanetary, instrumental prog metal that would come to be known as Phaeton.

Named for the theoretical proto-planet which collided with Ancient Earth during the Primordial Era, Phaeton combines technically ferocious compositions of modern metal with the ambitious song-arrangement mindset of classic prog-rock, formulating and intense and unique approach to instrumental prog-metal.

Conceptually, the idea of life itself, in all its beauty and wonder and majesty, emerging from an instant of catastrophic cosmic violence became the primary inspiration for their dramatic music birthed from the void in thrilling bursts and unexpected turns.

Since 2017, they have been working quickly as a collaborative unit, honing their skills and orchestrating an attention-focused listening experience. One drenched in joy and wonder and the emotional, visceral release that only prog-metal can deliver. Just when spring begins to peak in the Great White North, Majestic Downfall (Mexico) and Helevorn (Spain) will arrive from warmer lands to plunge the country back into the cold and dreary atmosphere that Canadians are accustomed to with their individual styles of melodic and melancholic doom metal. Both bands have released impressive albums recently that have caught the attention of media around the world. Now, Canadian metalheads will have the chance to experience the live acts from these well-regarded bands.

Helevorn released “Aamamata” in January 2019 and following in the veins of Draconican and Swallow the Sun. Heavy and dreary, it has enough variation and self-expression to keep from being dull.

“Aamamata is an experience that oozes with desolation and gloom, yet still provides that slightly uplifting feeling at the end of the day. Bone-crushing riffs that reverberate with emotion join up with some more introspective moments (see “Goodbye, Hope”) to bring in the contrast that bands like Daylight Dies and Novembers Doom have done so well, yet the structuring of both gives Helevorn a little wiggle room to reach for their own sweet spot.” – Dead Rhetoric

Majestic Downfall unleashed “Waters of Fate” in December of 2018 and the six-track album is recommended for fans of My Dying Bride and old Katatonia. As their fifth studio release, they bring finesse and emotion back into the genre.

“The sound of these Mexicans improved in industrial proportions and this innovative and varied approach to their music, presents the extreme and melancholic detail that Doom/Death Metal left forgot long ago.” – breathlesssleep.com

Doom and death metal fans are invited to witness these acts across the desolate North.

Majestic Downfall started as a one-man doom journey in August of 2006. The idea was to recapture the feeling of the 90s European death/doom metal scene, while mixing it with some more modern metal overtones. In 2007, MAjestic Downfall pressed its first demo titled – “The First Abyss Demo 2007” which was later released in a split with Italian black/doom metal band Ansia.

On April 6th, 2009, Majestic Downfall released its debut full-length album, “Temple of Guilt”. This time the music contained a darker edge full of sorrow and new influences from bands like Shining and Forgotten Tomb. 2011 saw the release of “The Blood Dance” album which contained 7 sorrowful passages with an even darker edge than Temple of Guilt. The “Three” album was released in 2013 and this time the sound contained even more experimentation in the music but without staying too far away from the band’s musical roots. 2015 sees the release of “…When Dead”, an album that is not only the bands most diverse output incorporating lots of influences outside doom metal, but one that also and for the first time has an important backing label.

In 2018, “Waters of Fate”, was released in 3 different continents by 3 different labels. It is mixed and mastered by Tore Stjerna (Watain, Portrait, Mayhem) at Necromorbus Studios in Stockholm, Sweden and definitely more and more opportunities in all areas coming along the way for the band.

Melancholic doom outfit Helevorn started in 1999 in Palma, Spain, and has been exhibiting their elegant and gloomy music around the world ever since.

They began their journey with a demo in 2000, “Prelude” that featured female vocals and followed the gothic doom formula. They were quickly accoladed by the press and they dove into writing, gigging and recording. In 2005 the first full length “Fragments” was released.

In 2006 they were asked to contribute to the Katatonia tribute “December Songs” and released the second studio album in 2009 “Forthcoming Displeasures”. This release saw their musical style evolve into a more intense and heavy sound, more forceful and deep. “Compassion Forlorn” was released in 2014, and was accompanied by a music video for “Burden Me”.

With more and more fans craving the somber tones and dreary vocals, Helevorn brought their dramatic intensity to many European festivals including Dutch Doom Days, Gothoom Open Air, Wave Gotik Treffen, and Madrid is the Dark Fest.

The fourth studio album “Aamamata” was released on January 23, 2019.

Sylent Storm, ripping traditional heavy metal from Medford, USA will be premiering their video single ‘Patriots of Metal’ taken from self titled EP (2018); exclusively on the NWOTHM FULL ALBUMS YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/fbYFt0GX3Q4.

Following in the footsteps of bands such as Cauldron, Enforcer and Night Demon, Sylent Storm goes back to the sound of classic heavy metal that is reminiscent of the early New Wave of British Heavy Metal. They released their melodic and catchy self-titled debut in December of 2018.

The video for ‘Patriots of Metal’ aims to give watchers a sense of nostalgia, an urge to pound their fist, bang their head and have fun with catchy, exciting-sounding metal again.

“[It’s] exactly how I feel. Heavy metal is timeless and placeless, to me. We are all in a worldwide family brought together by the love of this one thing that’s important to us. I am patriotic toward heavy metal the way a person can be patriotic to their country. They will bravely fight for it and stand up proudly to those who oppose it. It’s our call to arms, sort of rallying the troops.” – Jym Harris (vocals)

Sylent Storm has confirmed several live dates where fans can expect an engaging performance, but for those unable to make to see them live, a tour edition cassette will be released, which includes ‘Patriots of Metal’ and bonus live tracks. A full-length album has been confirmed with a planned release late in 2019.

Bio:

Formed by lead vocalist (and then drummer) Jym Harris, along with guitarist James Lind, and bassist Matt Foster, Sylent Storm was born in Medford Oregon on March 2013. Over the next few years, the trio played dozens of shows around Southern Oregon with notable acts like Raven, Unleash the Archer, Spellcaster and Night Demon.

The band recorded their self-titled EP in early 2015, but as members parted ways, the project was left unmixed until 2018. With the growing popularity of the New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal, Doug Hill at Medford’s 60 Psycho Hum Studios mixed and mastered the six-track release. A physical CD was released by Stormspell Records in December of ’18 and shortly thereafter, the self-titled EP made several “Best Of 2018” lists.

As favorable reviews/mentions appeared in music publications, interest in the band began to grow. With Foster retiring from music and Lind focusing primarily on vocals in a new project, a different lineup moved forward. As of early 2019, the critically acclaimed EP has gained a moderate following in the NWOTHM community, and a video for the song “Patriots Of Metal” will be released in March. With tour dates announced, new songs are being fine-tuned for a full-length release later in the year.
