A Heavy Brew of Blackened Stoner Psych
Montreal’s WYKAN Premiere “Wykan (The Shaman Trance) via TheObelisk
Debut EP “Solace” Out April 13th
Featuring Guest Vocals Matt McGachy (Cryptopsy) & Barrie Butler (Eohum)

L-R – Bass : Daniel Paras – Bass, Jeremy Perkins – Vocals and Guitars, Morgan Zwicker – Drums
Founded in 2017 by guitarist/singer Jeremy Perkins (Eohum), Montreal’s trio WYKAN delivers a heavy brew with its touch of black metal, old stoner / psychedelic rock and blues. Blending these genres, the band evokes spirits of heavy riffs and hot amp tubes overridden and pushed to the limits soon to be heard on their debut EP “SOLACE” due out on April 13th.
“After releasing very heavy black metal for 3+ yrs with my band Eohum, I wanted to return to blues and doom oriented music and expression, with atmosphere, blues solos and more feeling. Both Morgan Zwicker (drums) and Daniel Paras (bass) are distinct musicians / vocalists with jazz/blues backgrounds whom had the will to jump on board.” says band founder Jeremy Perkins.
Hitting the jam space and recruiting some special guests Matt McGachy (Cryptopsy) and Barrie Butler (Eohum), WYKAN‘s debut EP “Solace” features three punishing tracks full of atmosphere and mystery where you can hear black metal rage meet the finest components of blues and harsh psych stoner riffs. The theme of the EP follows inspiration of Ethnobotany and magic along with a tribal take on ritual and ceremony. More specifically with the Northern European Tribes known as the Saami from Finland/Norway/Sweden areas of today and their usage of Amanita Muscaria mushroom for Shamanic practices. Overall, the EPs concept is a reminder of the brisk realities of our lives in relation to the spirit world.
Teaming up with TheObelisk.net, WYKAN are premiering their next single “Wykan (The Shamanic Trance)” featuring guest vocals from Eohum‘s Barrie Butler.
Band founder Jeremy Perkins comments:
“Wykan (The Shaman Trance) is the short-story / poetic take on the ceremony of drinking the brew of clarity (Amanita prepared brew) among the shaman’s hut and the trip commencement under influence of the Amanita Muscaria.”

About:
Edmonton’s own Protosequence offer a rush of groovy guitar parts met with story-filled lyrics and serene, landscape-sized instrumentals that roll like hills into a valley.
Protosequence is a reference to the original genome where all life began — much like the band, which existed in principle before they even had a presence. Each of the members were lying in wait to be activated and become the strain that is now Protosequence. Kyle Hunter (guitar) was constantly crafting near-complete songs that were ready to be realized. It did not take long for Kyle and Logan Vars (drums) to finally meet. It seemed as though there were two projects destined to combine into a singular effort to form the final line-up for the band: Logan (drums), Kyle (guitar), Parker (guitar), Joseph McKee (vocals), and Ryan Schaffler (ex-bassist) who is now replaced by Jacob Teeple. Members have a long history in the Edmonton music scene, playing in bands like Anubian and In The Midst Of A Murder since the early 2000s.
The band draws influence from acts like All Shall Perish, August Burns Red, and The Black Dahlia Murder. With a foothold on their influences, they root their music in technicality while layering emotional, yet gruff vocals weaved into every track. The band transitions seamlessly through djent riffs, grinding drums, and groove elements, making their sound versatile and ever-changing. Each live performance is crafted like an album played from front to back, with each song bearing a story and painting the room like a canvas — leaving the colours and experiences on each audience member.
The band will be releasing their new EP “Biophagous” on August 18th, 2017 to follow their 2016 debut EP “Schizophrene”.

“Edmonton’s Protosequence perform an agile balancing act on the new song “Shepherd” we’re bringing you from their forthcoming EP, Biophagus, a high-wire performance that deftly straddles a stylistic divide without ever losing their path forward.” No Clean Singing
“In the vein of bands like All Shall Perish & Born of Osiris, Protosequence kick proceedings off with the furiously tech riffing of Parasitic, a wild & untamed slab of death metal. That is until a surprising tempo change that brings in some keyboards & more classic metal sounding guitar solo. It’s a damn strong start, one that leaves you wondering just what more Biophagous has to offer.” – Games, Braaaiiins And A Headbanging Life
“Protosequence is an act of quality over quantity. I get seriously lost in their music, be it through a spine-damaging headbanging session (“DFL”) or stretch of melodic introspection (“Shepherd”). Biophagous offers up another nice showcase of the band’s skill across a variety of substyles and paces.” – Metal Trenches
“Protosequence takes the insane melodic riffage of metalcore bands like August Burns Red or Novelists, and mixes them with tech death elements of bands like The Black Dahlia Murder which makes for what I think could be a band that has the potential to break through and make it huge…Biophagus is of another caliber, every aspect of it is flawless, and will not only be in my playlist but should be in everyone else’s as well. Whatever you do, do not sleep on this band. Make sure you pick up Biophagus when it releases August 18th! ” – Blood Rock Media
“Incorporating elements from deathcore, technical death metal, and, yes, even djent, Protosequence manages to maintain the listener’s interest while developing an identity that is not only unique to Canada, but to the world. ” – It Djents
“Traversing between djent and technical progressive metal” – Somberlane

Formed in 2010, Italian Folk Metal band Kanseil are a 21st century version of their land’s rich-story telling tapestry, they are bards with instruments, musical archaeologists, excavating the sounds and stories of their country’s past to create something new, beguiling and beautiful. They are a musical time machine, bringing forth riches from the past into the present.
In 2014, Kenseil signed to Nemeton Records, and released their full-length debut album ‘Doin Earde’ the following year.
Between 2014 and 2016 Kanseil played more than 60 shows with the likes of Korpiklaani, At The Gates, Enslaved, Folkstone, Manegarm, Arknoa, and Omina.
Inspired by Eluveitie, Skyforger, Arkona, Agalloch and Alcest , lead vocalist Andrea Facchin describes Kanseil’s music as “evocative, overwhelming, heavy, varied and dynamic!”
This year Kanseil will release their second full-length album ‘Fulische’.
Andrea explains that “’fulische’ are the sparks of a fire moving away from the element they were born from, they shine in their own glow and you can watch them for a few instants before they disappear forever in the dark…In the same way mankind’s stories live in the collective memory until they take flight and you have a limited time to look at them and catch their beauty before they’re lost.”
Unlike so many bands, Kanseil really are able to recreate their sound on stage.
“Live concerts are our great passion. We have fun giving them and we always get a great feedback from our audience. We care and say that all of the instruments used in the tracks of this album, such as the bagpipes, the whistles, and so on, will be used in live concerts as well. Our lyrics regard local tales and legends and traditions and pretty recent events that are worthy of attention and deserve to be remembered and saved from oblivion for the listeners!”
(Bio written by Steve Earles)
