GearGods Premiere Montreal Prog Metal FRACTAL CYPHER Playthrough ‘Idle Words’
Debut Album ‘The Human Paradox’ Out Sept 7th
Montreal prog metallers FRACTAL CYPHER will be releasing their debut album ‘The Human Paradox’ on September 7th. The album is produced by Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Agonist, Beyond Creation, Neuraxis) and will be comprised of 9 songs, each hand picked and strategically chosen to best represent the living, breathing entity that is FRACTAL CYPHER. Their fourth single off the debut is a playthrough video for ‘Idle Words’ that the band has teamed up withGearGods.net for the exclusive premiere.
“Idle Words is a « djtenty » style song that explores many different textures, soundscapes, and passages. Whether heavy riffs, jazzy ambiance and textures or catchy choruses and verses, Idle Words is far from being a monotone song and will surely hook the modern prog listeners.” comments guitarist Vincent Bruneau.
To watch the ‘Idle Words’ playthrough, please visit the following link: http://geargods.net/playthrough/fractal-cypher-no-idle-hands-on-idle-words-music-video/
FRACTAL CYPHER exists to captivate audiences with progressive instrumentals that cut through the mesmerizing vocals yet somehow evolving; each listen provides a new perspective. Straight out of the heart of Canada’s metal scene, these Montreal metallers constantly shift their compositions with seamless transitions and theatrical interludes to keep audiences on their toes. Since 2014, ex-Far From Reality members Simon Lavoie (vocals), Ludovick Daoust (keyboard), and Vincent Bruneau (guitar) have dedicated themselves to FRACTAL CYPHER.
The powerful quintet is just as versatile in their music as they are in their musical interests, darting between djent, death metal, and classic rock. Each song acts of their own volition almost taking control of the members and shaping a personality and energy not unlike a living entity. Ludovick is at the helm of songwriting, calculating and unlocking each melody and becoming the voice for each piece.

Oscar Wilde memorably said: ‘We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.’ Well, Cell are doing more than just looking, they have channeled the universe that surrounds us in all its infinite glory and chaos into their music. Thus, drums crash like asteroids pounding into a doomed planet, guitars soar at light-speed, and the bass throbs with the sonic pulse of a dying star, the band themselves describe their music as ‘chaotic, grinding, sludgy, cold and hateful.’
Cell is a band purveying their own unique brand of cosmic black metal with pile-driving drumming, flavored with hints of doom and sludge metal, but always with that unique black metal atmosphere, inspired by the cosmos, and darker than any black hole, drawing all light into itself and spewing out darkness.
Their top five influences are Inquisition, Tsjuder, Immortal, Death and 1349 but Cell very much bring their own vision to the table, after all, if you want to see far, you stand on the shoulders of giants…and Cell’s vision reaches to the very edge of the universe.
Cell came into creation in the late fall of 2014 at the hands of guitarist and vocalist Hyperion and drummer Void in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After jamming as a two-piece for a few months, bassist Deimos joined the nucleus of Cell, and this unique black metal organism was ready to infect the world, for a strong concept divides and multiplies like an invading organism infecting more and more fans in their turn…The Cell infection/invasion begins here!
Feeding off the crowd’s energy, Cell lives to bring their unique cosmic black metal to the stage…to show and guide their fans to what reigns above them, the universe in all its cold splendor and glory!
Guitarist and vocalist Hyperion explains the meaning behind Cell’s unusual name and how the Cell itself formed.
‘The meaning behind Cell’s name is biological and evolutionary. We wanted something that would suit us and the music that we forge…A lot of our lyrics are based on a concept of our own universe that we’ve created. We dig deep into humanoid beings and how they’ll inevitably meet their demise by their own hand….Originally I had the idea for Cell a few years ago and wrote some songs whilst looking for other musicians who shared my vision. Vocalist and bassist Deimos and drummer Void completed the foundation of Cell. All of us in the band were going through some hard emotional things in our lives and bringing the band together created an unbelievable catharsis for us. We’re able to channel dark emotions and hate upon things that disgust us in this world and reality.’
Indeed, Cell’s music has a depth and originality that goes beyond much of the clichéd music out there, as Hyperion explains in great detail the meaning behind their songs.
‘’The Frozen Moon of Erebath’ is a concept album taking place in a different galaxy to our own. In this galaxy there are many intelligent beings that have been driven to extinction by their own hands. Greed, hate, lust, and power are some of the many feelings that have destroyed them over time. On the frozen moon of Erebath there is a race of beings who destroyed their own planet and relocated to their moon to perform experiments and create more hybrids of themselves that can further their goal to conquer the galaxy.’
‘In the track ‘Celestial Hybrid’ we explain a scenario where the hybrids of Erebath land on a planet similar to erase and terraform. They decimate the middle-aged and old while kidnapping the children for experiments to complete their conquest of the ‘perfect being’.
‘’Drained and Lifeless’ is a track of pure hatred and emotion. It’s about the beings that suck your life force and energy from your soul. It relates to the hard moments we deal with every day as humans. There are so many people out there that don’t know that they drain people’s energy and will continue to do so until the day they perish.’
‘‘Cosmic Portal Ov Hell’; this track is about a portal that opens above a peaceful and caring civilisation. They soon realise the beings coming through this portal are here for one thing only…destruction!’
‘’Symbiotic Parasite’; this is about a symbiote that is able to attach and combine itself with another intelligent being to live together as one. It stays attached for a few months and slowly drains the being until there is no life force left. Each new victim makes this symbiote more and more powerful.’
‘Celestial Hybrid’ is a song about the hybrids of Erebath descending down from the stars so they can terraform a peaceful planet. They kidnap the young for experiments to further themselves as the perfect beings.’
In ‘The Infinity Gauntlet’ a Titan travels planet-to-planet just to destroy them and please Death herself. He sees Death in a woman’s form and fell in love with this entity since he first killed. Death doesn’t exist as a being…but in his eyes she is there every day convincing him to take more planets to satisfy her lust.’
‘’Erasing The Plane of Existence’ is a continuation of both ‘Cosmic Portal Ov Hell’ and ‘Celestial Hybrid’. This track delves further into the destruction of a civilisation from pure curiosity in science and inventions.’
‘The last track on the album is entitled ‘Rage Upon The Celestial Effigy of Infinite Time and Space’ is a story about race of beings that work as planet merchants for the hybrids and clean off total worlds so they can sell them for terraforming. The king eventually gets too greedy and brings about his own demise of his race of hybrids themselves. He witnesses the planet exploding as he ends his own son off to another planet far in the stars in an attempt to save his offspring’s life.’
To conclude…Cell are an aural firestorm of cosmic frost and fury, free from clichés, fearless in their vision, they are the ideal band to take black metal to new cosmic heights and black dimensions!’

What began as a solo project for Michael Ursini (Singer/Songwriter/Rhythm Guitar) has morphed into Uforia, a talented four-piece hard rock band that has released three EPs since 2012. Based in Toronto and influenced by Billy Talent, Incubus, Finger Eleven and Our Lady Peace, among others, the group also consists of Adam Brik (Lead Guitar), Daniel Salij (Bass) and Dylan Piercey (Drums).
Uforia’s third EP is the high energy Fight or Flight, featuring five songs all produced by and co-written with Steve Molella (Finger Eleven). “Steve has had a massive influence on myself and Uforia,” says Ursini. “He worked his butt off to make each song reach its maximum potential. I’ve learned more about songwriting and recording in the last year than ever before because of his talent and energy.”
The aggressive and riff-laden title track (which is also the lead single) is about the struggle of making difficult decisions. “It was originally conceived after Adam hit a tree and dislocated his thumb in a snowboarding fall,” explains Ursini. “He was in so much pain and didn’t feel he could wait to be rescued. In that moment he made the choice to get himself down the mountain and seek the medical attention he needed.”
The EP continues with “Radiation”, a warning that ecological change is inevitable and we must embrace it and evolve in order to survive. “Wake Me” is about the struggle to wake up and escape the darkness of a dream world, while “Overthrow” encourages listeners to be patient and to take control of their own destiny when the moment is right. The EP closer “Is Anybody Living” is a track about facing your fears, particularly the fear of change.
Uforia’s previous releases include the debut EP Imagining (2012) and the fan-funded follow-up Transmutation (2015). The band has won a number of contests including the Hard Rock Rising Canada contest (2013), the opportunity to open for hometown heroes Billy Talent (2014) and the Jack Daniel’s Supporting Act contest (2016). “Fight or Flight” was played regularly at Rogers Centre during the Blue Jays games throughout the 2016 season. It ranked #4 on the best songs of 2016 at CJIM Montreal’s Rock Station and 91X in Belleville. Oshawa’s 94.9 The Rock FM featured Fight or Flight (EP) on the Best of Generation Next 2016.
Shared the stage with:
Billy Talent and James Black (Finger Eleven)
Tours & Festivals:
2016 – Woodbridge Ribfest, Youth Day Global, Southern Ontario Tour (Ongoing Weekends)
2015 – Woodbridge Ribfest, Youth Day Global,
