“Tactus’ music is progressive metal through and through. They have some longer songs, heavier riffs, and “epic sections,” as they described it. Listeners can also find a heavy jazz influence in some of their songs as well, evident in some of their voicings and chord progressions.” – It Djents

Tactus is a five-piece progressive metal band from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Formed in 2011 as a jam project by three fellow music students, the group has gone on to release several singles and EPs independently, while having the opportunity to share the stage with great metal acts like Protest the Hero, Intervals, Black Crown Initiate, and Mandroid Echostar. Their first full-length album ‘Bending Light’ features 10 outer limits prog tracks set to be unleashed on October 7th, 2016 with mixing and mastering by Jamie King (Between The Buried In Me, Paradise Lost, Scale The Summit).
The group pride themselves on their infusion of multiple musical styles into hard-hitting riffs, epic choruses, and technically intense passages. Soaring melodies, guttural growls, and destructive breakdowns flow into soft, slow, and pensive segments of jazz and rock. Their compositional method, where songs are conceived, written, transcribed, and edited before they are ever learned or rehearsed, adds a level of refinement and fluidity not always found in heavier music. The band do almost all of their engineering work themselves. While they have released two fully self-produced tracks, Enigma (August 2014) and Roxanne (March 2015), they have also worked with several talented producers. Their first EP T (June 2014), comprised of four previously released singles and one new song, featured the mixing and mastering handiwork of Gino Bambino (Novallo) and Justin Hill (SikTh). Their single Resurface (December 2014) was handled by George Lever (Burials).
0 Canadian Beats – Medevil – Conductor of Storms
The album features eight bass filled, drum enhanced and vocally strong songs. From the opening build up in “Nightwalk” to the final note in “The Fabled Uxorcicide” demonstrates the time, talent and effort that went into making this album.

It is one of the most magical moments in a band’s life when they release their debut album. We can only imagine what Kerry King and Tom Araya felt like on the eve of ‘Show No Mercy’ being unleashed on the world, or the excitement that must have coursed through Steve Harris and Dave Murray as their self-titled debut was about to escape into an unsuspecting and never to be the same again world.
Well, Medevil don’t just imagine it…their debut album ‘Conductor of Storms’ is about to explode in a blast of metallic thunder and lightning upon the earth.
Hailing from Chiliwack, BC, Medevil are a hard-working progressive band, constantly striving to improve their songs, a fact not missed by Wacken Metal Battle Canada, where Medevil made the top 6!
Band vocalist Liam Collingwood explains the band’s memorable moniker. ‘The band name was thought up by Eric and fits our style of music perfectly.’
Liam is very serious about the bands modus operandi. ‘Medevil formed as a creative outlet for each member. The goal of our band is to satisfy our creative desires, while maintaining our standard of quality and to expand our knowledge of music as a whole. In five words, I’d sum up our music as power/thrash/prog/heavy metal.’
Liam says if he had to pick one Medevil track to represent the band it would be ‘the song ‘Machination Factory’ as it is one of the heavier songs on the album and it’s also the newest song that we wrote so it’s fresher in our heads. We wanted to release something first that would be a good start at representing our band even though future songs may.’
Liam reveals that song-writing is very much a collaborative effort. ‘We normally have a bunch of riff ideas ourselves and then we all come together to complete our vision…We all take part in the writing. All the songs have some sort of collaboration going on, even though some may be very minor alterations. We try to collaborate on projects as much as possible without destroying the original vision.’
While the band collaborates strongly on the music, the lyrics are Liam’s department, as you’d expect. ‘Lyrics are normally written based on an emotion or a story I am thinking of at the time that I want to project. Although sometimes I have some melodies in my head that I really like which I try to put into my lyrics. Some songs are more about a story I am telling whether fictional or somewhat true. Others are about a feeling or emotion I am feeling at the time and can be hidden beneath metaphors.’
Liam is proud that Medevil have a high level of quality control when it comes to their music. ‘In total we probably scrapped eight songs in favour of the ones included on the album. Our early sound, from 2011-2014, was mostly a rock-esque type of metal. ‘In The Distance’, ‘The Angel of Rain’ and ‘A Sacrifice’ are all from the early days of the band. When we included Brett and Gary in the band in 2014, we started leaning towards a much faster and more progressive style.’
A similar level of thought went into the track listing. ‘The track listing was a long task, it was most decided based on what we thought was the best listening experience for our fans and for how we like to set up our live shows with some changes. Fans can expect new material in the coming years and regular tours once or twice a year.’
Liam rates the bands live show highly. ‘People can expect a refined sound from us as well as a powerful energy, and a good connection between the band members. Fans can tell we are a band of friends!’
Liam reveals that the letter ‘M’ is very significant in Medevil’s top five influences, which are ‘Metalica, Megadeth, Mastodon, Metal Church, and Iron Maiden!’
And now we can add Medevil to that proud list of bands beginning with M who all released powerful a debut album.

Toronto, ON’s rock ensemble UFORIA have released their new music video directed by Finger Eleven guitarist James Black for their track ‘Fight or Flight’. The song is the title track off the band’s latest EP released on July 15th to follow their fan-funded full length 2015’s ‘Transmutation’ and 2012’s debut EP ‘Imagining’.
“We had the luck and honour of having our single “Fight or Flight” played at the Blue Jays games all summer and felt that there was a great enough demand to release a music video. Working with James and Rich was a pleasure and we’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished. BIO:
What began as a solo project for Michael Ursini (Singer/Songwriter/Rhythm Guitar) has morphed into Uforia, a talented four-piece hard rock band that has released three EPs since 2012. Based in Toronto and influenced by Billy Talent, Incubus, Finger Eleven and Our Lady Peace, among others, the group also consists of Adam Brik (Lead Guitar), Daniel Salij (Bass) and Julien Bigras (Drums).
Uforia’s third EP is the high energy Fight or Flight, featuring five songs all produced by and co-written with Steve Molella (Finger Eleven). “Steve has had a massive influence on myself and Uforia,” says Ursini. “He worked his butt off to make each song reach its maximum potential. I’ve learned more about songwriting and recording in the last year than ever before because of his talent and energy.”
The aggressive and riff-laden title track (which is also the lead single) is about the struggle of making difficult decisions. “It was originally conceived after Adam hit a tree and dislocated his thumb in a snowboarding fall,” explains Ursini. “He was in so much pain and didn’t feel he could wait to be rescued. In that moment he made the choice to get himself down the mountain and seek the medical attention he needed.”
The EP continues with “Radiation”, a warning that ecological change is inevitable and we must embrace it and evolve in order to survive. “Wake Me” is about the struggle to wake up and escape the darkness of a dream world, while “Overthrow” encourages listeners to be patient and to take control of their own destiny when the moment is right. The EP closer “Is Anybody Living” is a track about facing your fears, particularly the fear of change.
Uforia’s previous releases include the debut EP Imagining (2012) and the fan-funded follow-up Transmutation (2015). The band has won a number of contests including the Hard Rock Rising Canada contest (2013), the opportunity to open for hometown heroes Billy Talent (2014) and the Jack Daniel’s Supporting Act contest (2016). “Fight or Flight” made the Alan Cross top 11 chart May 13, 2016 and is being played at Rogers Centre during the Blue Jays games.
