Through the six songs presented, I noticed a depth that I wasn’t prepared for. An up-tempo metallic drive, clean and rough vocals done masterfully by Jack Cerre (also handling guitar duties, and a dead-ringer for former Corrosion Of Conformity singer Karl Agell), and a mid-paced and streamlined nostalgic sound which can transition perfectly to moments of pure riffing aggression and thundering bass and drums at a breakneck pace (provided by Kyle Scarlett and Austin Henderson respectively).

Taking influence from Europe’s music festival circuit, Armstrong Metal Fest is a heavy metal celebration that encourages metal heads from across Canada and the globe to mosh and camp with the backdrop of great outdoors of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. What started as a backyard party in 2009 with nothing but eleven local metal bands such as Terrifier, Xul and Odinfist to name a few, has grown into a a huge success admired by the Western Canadian Metal scene. 2016 will be the eighth year of the festival and is planned to be the largest year for music and attendance yet. This year’s team of organizers known as the West Metal Entertainment Society is the most dedicated to date and are excited to present an incredible line up along with some changes to come for AMF 2016. Previous years of the festival have seen line ups with Cattle Decapitation, Suffocation, Anciients, Bison BC, Striker, Crimson Shadows, Holy Grail, Archspire, Cryptopsy, Unleash The Archers, Divinity, Into Eternity, Ninjaspy, Vesperia, XUL, Odinfist, Death Toll Rising, Gomorrah among many others .

That motto comes from a band philosophy that as individuals, we’ve all dealt with the feelings of not belonging or fitting into the status quo.
“We’ve always been seen as the black sheep and proud of it because we never liked the notion of simply conforming to what society has had us believe to be “normal”. A Rebel Few is badge for all those who feel abandoned by societies “standards” and are looking for refuge. A place where they belong and find strength in like minded souls.” says vocalist Chris Raposo.
A heavy hitter of Southern rock with an injection of groove, A REBEL FEW is comprised of ex-West Memphis Suicide members Chris Raposo (Vocals-Guitar), Barry Martin (Guitar), Chris Spiers (Drums) along with Adam Shortreed (Bass). Playing music to fill the void not only for themselves, but for those who connect with their sound, the band has already shared the stage with Steel Panther, Jackyl, Skid Row, Killer Dwarfs, Anvil, Kill Devil Hill, Texas Hippie Coalition, My Darkest Days, The Headstones, and Danko Jones all before their debut album ‘As The Crow Flies’, which is now available as of April 22nd, 2016.
The debut was produced by Sterling Winfield (Pantera, Damageplan, Hellyeah, Texas Hippie Coalition) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Rush, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Beastie Boys, Pantera) to impact your speakers with its heavy guitars, huge rhythm section and a gravel-blasted soulful voice for straight up in your face rock n roll to add to their lyrical themes of empowerment and overcoming the worst in life as they see it.
Raposo, the main lyric writer says “My lyrics mostly stem from a childhood of being shunned for not adhering to what everyone saw as normal and being persecuted for simply being who I was. The music has always been my therapist.
As lead by example with the group’s single Rebel Few, a song about unity and belonging. Overall the album has a message of “Don’t let anything or anyone tell you can’t achieve what you want to, be who you are despite what others think you should be and don’t change who you are just to appease the masses.”

Forging death metal with elements of thrash, groove, black, and melodic tones, Ottawa, ON’s hybrid force OMINOUS ECLIPSE has posted a new lyric video for the title track from their latest album ‘End of Days’ released in 2015, which was an immediate follow up to their 2014 debut EP ‘Beyond The Apocalypse’. The band recently opened for Kalmah and Vesperia earlier this month and have just been announced once again as local support for Aegaeon and Depths of Hatred for their tour stop in Ottawa on May 28th.
Vocalist/ guitarist Graham Murphy comments on the lyric video:
“End Of Days,” the title speaks for itself. We took an “end of the world” concept and used a “balance of light and darkness” theme with a biblical topic. The idea is “Death,” symbolized as darkness, shadowing over the world to consume all life. Humanity turns to “God,” symbolized as light, in hope for salvation. God is the one who sent Death seeing us as being undeserving of the gift of life. Although the song may come off as trying to preach morals from a religious sense, we are really just portraying an apocalypse themed song where both light and darkness are our enemy.”

A very ambitious band passionate about writing and playing extreme music, Ottawa based metal band Ominous Eclipse have self labeled themselves as a “Hybrid” with death metal being the main aspect combined with elements of thrash, groove, black, melodic etc. Active since 2014, Ominous Eclipse have released an EP, “Beyond The Apocalypse” and an LP “End Of Days.” Starting off playing small local gigs in the Ottawa area, the band has been making waves on the local scene opening for big names such as Revocation, The Agonist, Kalmah and more! From the opening track “The Wild” to “Pigs” to my personal favorite “Winter” the band works their way through everything from classic rock all the way to hardcore…What Black Absinthe does is make music that comes across live; music that will bring a crowd to their feet, but contemplate the lyrics after the show is all said and done. It’s a tricky feat to bring that across on a studio recording. “Early Signs of Denial” nails it and shows the band must be a great time on stage.
