  • · Necronomicon

Necronomicon may mean “Book of the Dead”, but there is nothing dead about this release. Song after song made me want to run right out and “BREAK SHIT”. The lyrics are dark and gloomy with a medieval feel and the guitar riffs are hard driving, and ear drum blistering. This is not a sound you will find just anywhere, they have aged like a fine wine and are bold, fresh and unique all at the same time.

Cinematic Metal Orchestra OPERUS Posts New Lyric Video ‘Maya And The Wolf’, Supporting Sonata Arctica In Toronto March 31st

Upcoming Show Dates:

March 31 – Toronto, ON @ The Opera House w/ Sonata Arctica – Event info

EP Stream – Opus I – http://operus.bandcamp.com/album/opus-i

Toronto, ON based OPERUS creates compositions of heavy classical influenced metal without restriction on creativity in expressing thoughts and emotions from the brainchild of band founder Oscar Rangel. Unleashing their four track debut EP ‘Opus I’ during November 2015, the band have posted a new lyric video for their track ‘Maya And The Wolf’, which can be viewed at the following link below.

“I believe ‘Maya & the Wolf ‘ is the most interesting song in the album, its sound is very classical, yet the story telling in the lyrics and the instrumentation gives it folkish undertones as well. This is the song we chose to produce a lyric video for because we believe this is the most “relatable” song in the EP and yet it still sounds heavy and it is clear that its part of a metal album. The instrumental part in the middle is one of the many “band solo” sections I have worked over the years using mainly the counterpoint composition technique, where all the instruments play different melodies at once to build up a very interesting sounding passage.” comments band founder Oscar Rangel.

About:
Toronto, ON based OPERUS creates compositions of heavy classical influenced metal without restriction on creativity in expressing thoughts and emotions from the brainchild of band founder Oscar Rangel.

“I have always been a huge fan of performing arts, not only music, but also theater, circus, and contemporary dance, some ballet, etc. I always wanted to combine as many of my influences as possible that includes many metal sub-genres and other disciplines, hence I started roaming towards the idea of “Opera”, but more in the classical sense, and less in the modern “metal opera” movement (Avantasia, Aina, and many more).” says Rangel.

First composing in Mexico before relocating to Toronto, ON, the solo project at the time went under the name ‘Masquerade of Opera’ and went on to record a demo in 2009 entitled “Winter Nightmare”, which was named after Rangel’s first cold winter of that year in Canada.

Fast forward five years later to 2014, Rangel who is also a former member of Annihilator and bassist for Mastery, changed the name of his project to OPERUS to better describe it and push towards creating a bigger production.

““Operus” Stems from the combination of two highly “classical” words: “Opus”, which was used in the previous times to mark musical creations (Opus 1 = creation 1). And “Opera” which is a form of theater where the script is performed singing.” says Rangel.

Recruiting Will Patterson (Vocals) (ex-Anurysm, ex-Exile), Robin Howe (Cello), Wojtek Sokolowski (Bass/Vocals) (Eclipse Eternal), Rob Holden (Guitar) (ex-Left Hand Creation) and Alan Madhavan (Drums) (ex-Nephelium) (now replaced by drummer J.J. Tartaglia (Skull Fist, Final Trigger)), the group recorded their first EP ‘Opus I’ with all instrumentation written by Rangel (Guitar/Vocals).

The debut EP ‘Opus I’ was unleashed during November 2015 and features four tracks of cinematic themes of powerful metal to fill fans mind with images and stories with a sound based on lyrics from philosophical topics such as what it means to be human and alive in a world full of violence, greed plus our evolution as a species.

“We felt these tracks display the most of what we sound like. We wanted our debut EP to portrait as much of the textures and colours we put in our music. Plus “Opus I” as it states our first creation is an “introduction letter” for everyone to know who we are, we made it all ourselves and now that we have something to show we are working on a bigger project.” comments Rangel.

With the completion of their EP, Rangel has several albums worth of finished material ready to go for their debut full length that they plan to record later this year to add to their performance that goes beyond a music show or a metal gig, but a full on metal orchestrated experience.

About The EP explained by Oscar Rangel:

The album is full of different textures and musical ideas; it goes as loud, fast and heavy as some death metal bands, and as melodic and quiet as chamber music or a folk trio in the woods.

Track 1 – Agmen Inis:

Latin for “Army At War”, Agmen Inis is a very epic sounding song with a long, atmospheric intro to set the mood for Will’s impressive performance, we portrait a big part of what makes the band unique in this song from the very beginning where you have cello, classical guitar and great vocals. The verses and chorus are powerful and fast in contrast to the epic intro and middle part where we are setting space for theatrical performances on stage.

Track 2 – Fate’s Pantomime:

A light, fast and power metal sounding song with a cello solo substituting the usual guitar solo, this is definitely the simplest song in the album where the voice carries the main part most of the time and the bass has some fast passages.

Track 3 – The Book of Shadows:

The heaviest, most classical sounding song on the EP is also the most elaborated one. Both guitars in this song play completely different parts 90% of the time. This song also displays the heaviest and most aggressive side of our musical narrative, the vocal parts go from clean to growls to high pitch “heavy metal screams” to belcanto and choir parts. This is the newest composed song we recorded, as it was made roughly three years ago, as opposed of 6 to 10.

Track 4 – Maya & the Wolf:

Maya & the Wolf is the most interesting song in the album, its sound is very classical, yet the story telling in the lyrics and the instrumentation makes it sound very folkish as well. This is the song we choose to produce a lyric video because we believe this is the easiest song to listen and yet it still sounds heavy and it is clear that its part of a metal album. The instrumental part in the middle is one of the many “band solo” sections I have worked over the years using mainly the counterpoint composition technique, all the instruments play different melodies at once to build up a very interesting sounding passage.

Haiduk, all I have to say is you are one talented dude.  It’s always impressive to me when a single person can put together an entire album on thier own, but to do so with such a level of both technical marksmanship and enjoyability is bizonkers.  I look forward to hearing more of your thrash-heavy black and death metal in the future.

Edmonton Black & Doom Fest ‘Black Mourning Light’ Is Searching For Filmmakers + Band Submissions Now Open

2016 Edition
October 22, 2016
Rendezvous Pub, Edmonton
10+ bands
Tickets range from $30 to $40

Edmonton, AB based Black Mourning Light Metal Festival, a celebration of black, doom, and dark death metal is proud to announce they are searching for filmmakers to showcase their work at this year’s festival. The Rendezvous where the festival will be held is equipped with televisions to showcase films via DVD.

BML Festival organizer Dustin Ekman comments:

“We’re looking for darker films, and if they are silent even better. The fact that the films would be playing simultaneously as the music is performed limits their volume to zero. Horror, supernatural, fantasy, all the film genres that seem to work best for metal, are welcome. They will be curated and combed over just like the bands that will be playing, and attempts to match the bands and films together will be made, making this a more audio/visual event than Black Mourning Light 2015.”

Filmmakers interested in having their work shown at Black Mourning Light 2016 can use the following Filmmaker’s Application, located here.

Bands interested in playing at Black Mourning Light 2016 can apply at the following link below with submissions ending on July 1st and 2016 lineup revealed in August: https://blackmourninglight.wordpress.com/apply-to-play-bml-2016/

black mourning light 2016 trailer
After a successful debut during Halloween 2015, Black Mourning Light Festival returns for a 2016 edition set for October 22nd. The onslaught will be held at the Rendezvous Pub with a lineup of bands from across Western Canada all in the vein of black and doom metal along with select death styles. Last year’s line up included 11 bands from three provinces such as headliner Idolatry (Edmonton), Altars of Grief (Regina), Noire (Winnipeg), Ossific (Winnipeg), Vile Insignia (Calgary) and more.

Those that attended the 2015 inaugural ritual will not be disappointed by 2016, as they can expect a different while similar experience to that event. Due to the proximity of Samhain, costume prizes will still be awarded to those who wish to dress up early and celebrate the season.

About BML:

Conceived in March 2015 and executed on October 31, 2015, Black Mourning Light Metal Festival is the black metal and doom festival founded by Dustin Ekman of Crown of Viserys. Created to fill a void in Edmonton’s black and doom scene, the inaugural event brought 11 bands from three provinces together on one stage for the one-day event. Headlined by Edmonton’s own Idolatry, Regina’s Altars of Grief, and Winnipeg’s Noire, Black Mourning Light also featured Körperlose Stimme, Vile Insignia, Numenorean, and more.

About:

Emerging from the frightening expanse is an atmospheric force called …From The Deep whose ever changing style keeps fans of metal on their toes. Each album has a continuous story flowing from one to the next while thematically focused on the insignificance existence when faced with the vast intricacies of the universe, esoteric literature, consciousness, and the exhaustion of modern life. The band has an inclination for the absurd and deeply disturbing in terms of instrumentals and lyrics.
Nearly all the members have gotten their sea legs in the Ottawa scene. Vocally, Graham Cwinn is an intimidating force bellowing from hell while Jacob Sparling and Mike Birch tear their guitars to shreds with the utmost precision. Dave Solomon sounds like a thunderous force rumbling within each song as he slams his bass. The final element that weaves together the band’s sound is Nicholas Kaminski on drums who dominates the pace for the music and acts as an conductor demanding attention and obedience, musically.
Each opus swells like the tide with a natural yet rhythmic rise and fall making the tension in each song more visceral and the release more satisfying. Musically, the band is as unpredictable as the changes in the sea by straddling between nefarious black metal and downtrodden thrash. Vocally, the band is a tortured soul twisted by the waves and swept to sea crying out for rescue.

…From The Deep released their most terrifying piece to date ‘The Absurd Horror’ (July 2015), which is available on Bandcamp at https://fromthedeepband.bandcamp.com/. Featuring epics written about Greek myths and human survival, this is one band that will leave you with the feeling of being hopelessly lost on an unrelenting ocean, clinging to life.
