0 Teach’s Criterion of Metal – Sanktuary – Winter’s Doom

  • February 3, 2016
  • by Asher
  • · Sanktuary

Sanktuary’s Winter’s Doom is a supercharged, beer-soaked thrash fest of epic proportions.  From first listen, my impression was of Toxic Holocaust, Warbringer, and touches of Death in the production, composition, and vocal stylings.  To be pithy, Winter’s Doom is magnificent.  Relentless, contentious, and raw, this release from these four Canadian thrash prodigies is absolutely all killer, no filler.

About:

Taking influence from Europe’s music festival circuit, Armstrong Metal Fest is a heavy metal celebration that encourages metal heads from across Canada and the globe to mosh and camp with the backdrop of great outdoors of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. What started as a backyard party in 2009 with nothing but eleven local metal bands such as Terrifier, Xul and Odinfist to name a few, has grown into a a huge success admired by the Western Canadian Metal scene. 2016 will be the eighth year of the festival and is planned to be the largest year for music and attendance yet. This year’s team of organizers known as the West Metal Entertainment Society is the most dedicated to date and are excited to present an incredible line up along with some changes to come for AMF 2016. Previous years of the festival have seen line ups with Cattle Decapitation, Suffocation, Anciients, Bison BC, Striker, Crimson Shadows, Holy Grail, Archspire, Cryptopsy, Unleash The Archers, Divinity, Into Eternity, Ninjaspy, Vesperia, XUL, Odinfist, Death Toll Rising, Gomorrah among many others .

“Pick Demise of the Crown up and prepare to have you’re the space betwixt your ears awhirl with unforgettable rhythms and explosive riffery all within a package so expertly constructed as to appeal to fans spanning several genres and propel this release in a ‘must own’ priority.” Thy Demons Be Scribblin

“a beautiful heavy metal album / EP, mashed with occasional death metal and thrash elements. What is immediately striking is the vocal performance. Lead singer Beadmandelivers an old school scream/clean performance reminiscent of the style of Rob Halford. Actually, his performance reminded me of Dirk Thurisch’s on Bleed (Angel Dust) with a classical 80s and early 90s thrash metal/heavy metal vocal mixture. His performance is accompanied by perfect instrumental support, pumping drums and guitars full of tricks and melodies. A true diamond in the rough. I would even take the risk and say this would be the disc I would’ve liked to hear from Angel Dust after Bleed.” – Metal Nation Radio

“I absolutely love great power metal. I also love great progressive as well as traditional metal. Well Canada’s Demise of the Crown combines all those styles like no other band. Imagine Dream Theater, Queensryche and Judas Priest all combining to make one awesome metal album.” – The Dirty Room

“Brandish your weapons and bare your teeth in the battle for new world order with Montreal’s power metal quintet, Demise Of The Crown. They run the gambit from melodic power metal to hard rock weaved together with soaring solos reminiscent of Eddie Van Halen with undertones of Yngwie Malmsteen.” – Maximum Volume Music

“a vulgar display of power; sonic destruction mixed with big riffs that got everyone’s head banging and raising their fists to the air. If you like windmills, this would have been your moment. The whole band played with intensity and dished out a ton of music, something I’ve always respected about metal – it’s far from boring.” – Bucketlist Music Reviews (Live Review)

“This Montreal act churn out some pretty decent heavy/groove/rock/power metal stuff and their debut, self-titled, album is out on March 4th.” – Moshville Times

“The opening track of ‘We Are Invincible‘ sets the tone of the album, that the band are going to blast some real in-your-face power prog, and they are going to be relentless in the flurry of notes that comes this way. It’s mid-tempo heavy riffing with fast, technical and melodic solos” – The Metalist

“DOTC are both engineers and alchemists. They take pounding, grinding noise and turn it into precise, melodic power metal with seemingly no effort. The quintet of bearded Canadian gents write superbly catchy riffs and melodic choruses that pick you up and throw you over the back of their horses as they gallop into battle, guitars raised aloft and hair flowing like a viking in a shampoo ad.” – Loud Stuff

“Beautiful Compositions” – The Reckoning Hour

“If you’re looking for vocal deliveries that range from James Hetfield circa 1983 and Phil Anselmo circa 1989, this band has that! We’ll also throw in, at no extra charge, Tom Araya circa 1984! If you’re looking for guitar solos that will melt your face off…They’re here! All the time…Demise of the Crown has everybody in the world covered at all times. They are the United Nations of Metal.” – Glacially Musical

“an interesting release ,full of Progressive curves and face shredding riffs that entertain…Demise of The Crown have a budding future that will hopefully see them get worldwide attention!” – The Metal Gods Meltdown

“A darker power metal band with some great riffs, and a lot of potential…a great debut effort…I think they’ll be a huge deal in the near future. There’s a ton of potential in this band.” – Rock n Reel Reviews

Brandish your weapons and bare your teeth in the battle for new world order with Montreal’s power metal quintet, Demise Of The Crown. They run the gambit from melodic power metal to hard rock weaved together with soaring solos reminiscent of Eddie Van Halen with undertones of Yngwie Malmsteen. The band’s sound has developed from progressive to a heavy metal band that has a pop format structure to the music in order to lure people into the realm of metal. Through many years of playing music with different people in the Montreal scene and slowly forming the official line up in 2014. Each member have spent their time paying dues in the local community and have banded together with the same goal and vision for a band determined to shake the foundation of power metal.

Guitarist, Manuel Iradian writes all the music, then handed off to Kevin “Kevy Metal” (drummer) to dress up each song with his high-speed, galloping rhythms, finally, Darren Beadman crafts the anthemic lyrics rousing crowds to chant along with an anarchistic frenzy. Each song is rooted in all basic human emotions; anger, lust, depression, happiness, death and revenge.

Influenced by headliners like Nevermore, Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth, Pantera, and Faith No More, the band is working their way up the royal blood line to cause chaos right alongside their heroes. They have performed with iconic bands like Hellyeah, Devin Townsend Project, 3 Inches Of Blood, Katatonia and Firewind. The band will be releasing their debut self titled full-length on March 4th, 2016 in all its hectic and melodic glory.

0 Heavy Blog Is Heavy – RHINE – An Outsider

  • February 2, 2016

  • · Rhine

One of Rhine’s greatest achievements is that, despite their transitions between heavy, soft, jazzy, or even post-rock and noise, it all somehow comes together…this album really is quite fun. It may not always make sense, and it’s far from perfect, but it’s weird, wacky and wonderful; sure to put a smile on your face as you come across one 90-degree turn after another. We can’t wait to see where they go next.

About FTF:

Started as a recording project in the late 90’s, it wasn’t until 2001 that the work ethic that produced a slew of underground releases drove Fuck The Facts towards full band status and into the live arena. Since then, the Ottawa-based unit has barely stopped for a breath of reconsideration, associating themselves with some of the biggest labels in underground extreme music, as well as continuing a steady output of DIY releases. Having toured hundreds of thousands of kilometers throughout North America and Europe, guitarist/founder Topon Das, vocalist Mel Mongeon, drummer Mathieu Vilandré, bassist/vocalist Marc Bourgon, and guitarist Johnny Ibay have performed at some of the biggest festivals and sweated it out in some of the smallest basements. From 2006-2011 Fuck The Facts released three albums via underground powerhouse label, Relapse Records.  Upon the completion of their contract, the quintet decided it was time to put the finishing touches on the proverbial full-circle, returning to the world of fierce independence and creative control. Their most recent releases were produced entirely at their own studio, self-released, and shows Fuck The Facts efforts as an entity continuing to grow musically and personally while developing a deeper understanding of what significance their art holds to them. As one of the longest running and most recognizable names in Canadian Grindcore, FUCK THE FACTS continue to deliver their brand of “Bastardized Grindcore” with no end in sight.
