Insurrection, the powerhouse metal band from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada is excited to release their guitar playthrough video for “Obsession”, offering fans a closer look at the intricate musicianship that defines their sound. This track is part of their recently released album “Obsolescence”, which came out on September 13, 2024, on the label Bam & Co. Heavy. They enthusiastically explain the single:
“This one may be our favourite to jam. It’s 2-ish minutes of grind or at least the type of grind we can still play 20 years into doing this. The lyrics are about being obsessed with perfection. It is basically the song that we cannot help but write. We’re usually a groovy death metal band, but we all love the chaos of grind. At the end of the day, we’ve always done whatever we want and feel like doing, and this song is 100% a reflection of that.”
Watch the guitar playthrough video for “Obsession” via its premiere on TechnicalMusicReview HERE.
Since its formation in 2003, Insurrection has been known for its intense live performances and unique blend of groovy death metal and thrash energy. With a lineup consisting of Stef Jomphe on vocals, Antonin Foisy and Mike Birch on guitars, Martin Samson on bass, and Jay Cross on drums, the band has consistently delivered music that resonates with metal fans across Canada.
“Obsession” captures the essence of Insurrection‘s sound, combining aggressive riffs, powerful vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics in both English and French. Musically, the album is cohesive while also being a little bit all over the place. Every song is patently Insurrection, but each song also pulls a bit of inspiration from somewhere new. They’ve got some that have a grind feel and others that have a touch of prog or thrash. Groove brings it all together. It is recommended for fans of Nevermore, Bloodbath, and Decapitated.
Released on September 13th from Bam & Co. Heavy, “Obsolescence” is available at the following links:

“From the slow, chugging intro to the fast, thrashy chorus, this is pure, unadulterated death metal with plenty of doomy and thrashy elements to keep people on their toes. The band have been at it for 20 years, and this song (The Gathering) is proof that they aren’t slowing down any time soon.” – Decibel Magazine
“This new single (Bless the Machine) goes flat-out right from the start, launched by an extended, serrated-edge scream, rapidly thrusting grooves, and a blizzard of mechanistic yet maniacal riffing. Intestinally deep gutturals proclaim their murderous prayer as the music occasionally seems to dismally moan and wail. The drums methodically chop, but while razor-sharp in their execution they also prove to be just as berserk as the fleet-fingered contortions of the fretwork. And yes, the song includes a head-spinning guitar solo that does sound like a refugee from Castlevania. It’s a hell of a wild, adrenaline-fueled gallop, further fueled by doubled voices screaming, but the song also frequently does sound like malicious machines ecstatically stitching steel through blasted flesh and broken bones — and like the piteous agonies of their victims.” – NoCleanSinging
“the group continues its metallic death proposition and this fifth album (Obsolescence) is intended to be as refreshing as an autumn swim in the Ottawa River. In other words, it keeps you alive and wakes you up.” – Ars Media QC
“Seven years have passed since their album Extraction. Be warned: it’s not in vain. A real punch in the throat! Brutality wall to wall. Despite the pandemic, the guys from Insurrection haven’t taken a break…. Obsolescence leaves you wanting more. For fans, you’ll be well served. For those who didn’t know them, now is a great time to discover them. 8.8/10” – Metal Universe
“Insurrection de Gatineau pulls no punches with Obsolescence which will be released in mid-September. After listening to their two extracts, Bless The Machine and The Gathering, clearly it’s going to be the bomb!” – Thorium Magazine
“Insurrection have easily out-done themselves with Obsolescence. This is, without doubt, world-class, groove-heavy death metal that can go toe to fucking toe with any band in the sub-genre. The production and mix is second to none, perfectly capturing the unique intensity of the songs.” – All Father Metal
“Another fine little slab of death metal from Canada’s Insurrection… Obsolescence is quite varied, first by having songs sung in English and French, but above all their death metal goes anywhere from crunchy death/thrash to melodic death metal to Swedish-style old-school death metal, and hell, some of the USDM school as well while they’re at it. So, they’re kind of all over the place but the album is cohesive, and this little musical rollercoaster stays on the tracks the whole time. The melodic passages are especially catchy, and so are the growls (mostly decipherable) with the vocal lines and some of the lyrics sticking around once it’s all over. Well done. 4/5” – The Metal Crypt
“Obsolescence is a very successful fourth album, once again combining the technique of the Quebec scene and the groove of an old man Gojira or one Revocation, all sprinkled with a good dose of plump violence. In short, we’re having a great time !” – Eklektik Rock
“Insurrection reflect today’s death metal scene rather well. On Obsolescence, we can appreciate clean production, crushing riffs, and a level of technical proficiency that, though elaborate, doesn’t devolve into something too complicated. It’s still easy to find the groove in each of the tracks. Hence, it’s somewhere in the middle between a melodic death metal band like The Black Dahlia Murder and more technical acts like Beyond Creation… it’s a fun listen!” – Heavy Music HQ
“a mangy in-your-face board with rich grooves, some thrashy set pieces and a noticeably thumping bass that knows how to shake up the pit of the stomach a bit, especially after breakfast. ” – PowerMetal.de
“If a well produced and well balanced variety of dynamic extreme metal with a liberal amount of switches back and forth between thrash metal and extreme metal territories is music that tend to interest you, this is an album that should appeal to you.” – Viking in the Wilderness
“Nice and meaty death/melodic death. Catchy groovin stuff!” – Moshpit Radio 89.9 FM WORT (Madison, WI)

As fans of the famously funny Honest Trailers series (made by the Screen Junkies YouTube channel), Canadian groovy and heavy-hitting death metal outfit INSURRECTION have created their own “honest trailer” for their latest music video “The Gathering” unleashed this past September in support of their new album “Obsolescence” released label Bam & Co. Heavy. The trailer showcases that in addition to delivering heavy riffs and bashing drums to fans, the band is also more than capable of delivering a few laughs, even if it’s at their own expense.
Vocalist Stef Jomphe comments:
“We had a ton of fun shooting the video for “The Gathering” and couldn’t just waste the 3+ hours we had on tape. We’re all fans of YouTube series like “[band] shreds” and, of course, “Honest Trailers” so it just made sense to put this together. Plus Mart’s voice was made for this job.”
Watch the Honest Trailer for Insurrection’s “The Gathering” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo2m9GBKHZs
The original music video that the trailer is based on can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OloWe37IY04
“Obsolescence” is the band’s first full-length in seven years, and is the fifth studio album that represents a culmination of everything they’ve worked on over the last twenty years, with both familiar (original) faces, as well as fresh blood in the lineup. The music addresses social and political themes through bilingual lyrics in both English and French.
Throughout their existence, INSURRECTION has gained a notable reputation on stage throughout Canada with tours covering coast to coast, including performances at festivals such as Montebello Rockfest, Trois-Rivières Metalfest, and Decimate Metalfest along with sharing the stage with bands like Cannibal Corpse and the Black Dahlia Murder.
The concept of “Obsolescence” is reflected throughout the album, and the band took things a step further by ending the record with a 3-song trilogy called The New Uprising. The trilogy which includes sub-themes of demagogy and elitism, as well as reflections on the death penalty, tells the cryptic story of a robotic uprising that is actually a metaphor for the rise of political extremism in the world.
One easter egg that long-time INSURRECTION fans may notice is that, like many of their other albums, The Obsolescence starts with the final notes from their previous 2017 album, “Extraction”.
The band comments on “Obsolescence”:
“We think people are going to really enjoy the mix of the sound they’ve come to know and love alongside some new ingredients. ‘Obsolescence’ brings together both people who have been in the band for 20+ years, and people who have only recently joined. It gives the music both a familiar and a fresh sound that we’re really excited to share. Some songs are going to be immediate fan-favourites, and others we think are really going to grow on people. Ultimately, we want people to have fun. The band is sort of like an onion, in that there’s something immediate there that’s fun, catchy, and of course, heavy. But for people who want to keep peeling the layers back, they’ll find some unexpected harmonies, some lyrics with a deeper meaning to them. Admittedly a lot of people may also need to learn a second language (French or English) to actually understand all the lyrics. Ultimately, there’s something there for everyone. If you want to just rock out and have fun, you’ll enjoy our music. And if you want something that goes a bit deeper, you’ll also find that.”
Recommended for fans of Misery Index, Testament, and Nevermore, “Obsolescence” was released on September 13th from Bam & Co. Heavy and is available at the following links:

Insurrection, the heavy-hitting death metal band from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, is thrilled to announce the release of their music video for the single “The Gathering”, which is the first glimpse of their upcoming album “Obsolescence”, which is set to be unleashed on September 13, 2024. Known for their intense and energetic performances, Insurrection brings their unique blend of groovy death metal and thrash energy to this powerful new track. The band comments:
“The first time we played this song, we knew we had to play it live in front of people. In fact, we felt so strongly about that, that we started opening our set with this song. It has a massive, heavy beginning, and gradually builds up to a fast, double-bass crescendo, only to drop again to a pummeling conclusion. Lyrically, the song is very dark, and has a ritualistic style to it, although the words themselves are actually telling a story of acceptance.”
The song starts with a slow chugging intro, kind of like “Scourge of Iron” by Cannibal Corpse. As the song goes on, it evolves in speed and intensity and then comes crashing down again at the end with that same chugging into. Insurrection has been making music for the metal community for over 20 years. To them, it felt right to start this album with an ode to the scene that they love, and have been part of for most of their lives.
This song is their ritual, their church, it’s The Gathering. It’s the Metal Experience. It is recommended for fans of Misery Index, Testament, and Nevermore.

Insurrection, the death metal powerhouse from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, proudly presents their new single “Bless the Machine”. Accompanying the release, the band has also unveiled an exclusive playthrough video, giving fans an inside look at the technical prowess behind their music. This track is part of their forthcoming album “Obsolescence”, which is set to drop on September 13, 2024, via the label Bam & Co. Heavy. The band comments on the track:
“This is the final part of “The New Uprising” trilogy. Musically, this song sounds like At the Gates playing Castlevania songs. Which you, the reader, will either completely understand, or be completely confused by. We’re fine with that. It’s fast, it’s melodic, and it’s just complicated enough so that every time you listen to it, you may find a tiny new thing.”
The band goes on to explain that the lyrics provide the conclusion to “The New Uprising” trilogy, with this song in specific being a “prayer to the machine” to eliminate the “filthy human breed”. The song was inspired by reflections on the death penalty, although the trilogy itself is about a Robotic Uprising, which is a metaphor for the rise of political extremism in the world.
Since their formation in 2003, Insurrection has captivated audiences with their high-energy performances and their unique blend of groovy death metal and thrash. They are recommended for those who enjoy Testament, Nevermore, and Bloodbath.

“We think people are going to really enjoy the mix of the sound they’ve come to know and love alongside some new ingredients. This album brings together both people who have been in the band for 20+ years, and people who have only recently joined. It gives the music both a familiar and a fresh sound that we’re really excited to share.
The band is sort of like an onion, in that there’s something immediate there that’s fun, catchy and of course, heavy. And if you want something that goes a bit deeper, you’ll also find that.” – Insurrection

About The Album Artwork:
The artwork is a giant, badass demon cyborg destroying a city block. We love it.
If you’ve been following the band for any amount of time, you’ll know that is the kind of visual we are all about.
About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):
Musically, the album is cohesive while also being a little bit all over the place. Every song is patently Insurrection, but each song also pulls a bit of inspiration from somewhere new. We’ve got some that have a grind feel and others that have a touch of prog or thrash. Groove brings it all together.
Lyrically, the album touches on both social and political issues while also not pushing any particular agenda. For those who just want to enjoy some fun music, the album is a great time. For people who want to dig a little deeper, there’s something there too.
We also tried something new on this album, by writing the last 3 songs as a trilogy called “The New Uprising”. It was a lot of fun to do and added a new challenge for us in terms of writing 3 distinct songs that also had a linear connection.
Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):
1. Preprogrammed: this is a plain and simple intro. For those who’ve been with us for a long time, it may be worth checking how the previous album ended to enjoy this one further. No Lyrics here.
2. The Gathering: This song starts with a slow chugging intro, kind of like “Scourge of Iron” by Cannibal Corpse. As the song goes on, it evolves in speed and intensity and then comes crashing down again at the end with that same chugging into. The lyrics have a dark, ritualistic style to them, but the song is actually about acceptance – most specifically, the acceptance people find at metal shows and within the metal community itself.
3. Failures of the Flesh: This is our slamming, thrashy, everyone goes nuts in the mosh pit song. The lyrics are about feelings of frustration, as well as ableism.
4. Secret des Dieux: This song is where we write a brief love note to the melodeath genre. To be honest, the song sounds like a mix between Morbid Angel and Hypocrisy. The lyrics are about abuse by members of the clergy.
5. Nemesis – Another hybrid influence for us, where we celebrate both thrash and melodeath influencers, mixed with the Insurrection sound we’ve developed over the last 20 years. The lyrics are about life during the pandemic, and talk about social media relations and relationships during a time of crisis
6. Hostile Takeover: This is a straight-forward, pound-your-chest rhythmic song with an early 2000s feel to it. The lyrics are about capitalism
7. Obsession: This one may be our favourite to jam. It’s 2-ish minutes of grind, or at least the type of grind we can still play 20 years into doing this. The lyrics are about being obsessed with perfection.
8. Charogne – This is a weird one with an almost “dancy” feel while also being heavy and a touch progressive. It’s probably the slowest song on the album as well, with a crushing chorus, and some gang vocals. The lyrics are about the financial system and bottom feeders.
9. Initiate the End: This song is the intro to our trilogy “The New Uprising”. The music is upbeat and groovy, with a bit of proggy influence. The lyrics for this song (and the whole trilogy) use a Robotic Uprising as a metaphor for the rise of political extremism. This particular song talks about demagogy, its subversive nature, and the destruction it can bring.
10. Obsolete: Part 2 of “The New Uprising”! The music is heavy and chuggy, and pays homage to the legendary Québec band Obliveon. Lyrially, this song is about elitism, and how society discards those it deems useless.
11. Bless the Machine – The final part of “The New Uprising” trilogy. Musically, this song sounds like At the Gates playing Castlevania songs. Which you, the reader, will either completely understand, or be completely confused by. We’re fine with that. It’s fast, it’s melodic, and it’s just complicated enough so that every time you listen to it, you may find a tiny new thing. The lyrics are the conclusion of the ideas of the first two parts, and are a “prayer to the machine” to eliminate the “filthy human breed”, which was actually inspired by reflections on the death penalty. The song ends with the words “the New Uprising is Complete”.

FUN FACTS – STORY ANGLES
1. Insurrection has been around for over 20 years (2003), and we’ve always been active with the exception of a pause due to the pandemic. This album is our first in 7 years, and represents a culmination of everything we’ve worked on over 2 decades, with both familiar (original) faces, as well as fresh blood.
2. Over our 20 year career, we’ve played some incredibly memorable shows. When it was happening, we were a staple at the famous Rockfest in Montebello, where we had the pleasure of playing for thousands of people, and sharing the stage with bands like Cannibal Corpse and the Black Dahlia Murder. On the other hand, we’ve also played “that place” where Celine Dion started out, plenty of asbestos-dust-filled basements, and at least one undisclosed Biker Gang private property fest. Whether we’re doing it for 2 people or 2,000, we’re having a blast.
3. Stef (vocals) was once included in a CBC documentary on unassuming people with strange hobbies’. Yes, the band was his strange hobby. Also, beyond that documentary, we’ve enjoyed a few appearances on CBC Radio/Radio-Canada, La Presse, and on various campus stations and local papers across the country.
4. The band writes in both French and English, and our band name (and the names of all our albums) actually works in both English and French.
5. We’ve been all over Canada from the east to west coast, with our most recent “road trip” being to Eastern Canada in the summer 2024.

Assembled in 2003 to infiltrate, build and destroy, Gatineau, QC’s INSURRECTION is an aural onslaught assaulting witnesses in both languages of French and English. Known for blending calculated technicality with a signature mixture of merciless death metal, the band has annihilated the masses with four full-lengths, their most recent 2017’s “Extraction” unleashed on Galy Records to follow “Prototype” (2013), “Fracture” (2010) and “Prologue” (2009). Emerging as one of the most prominent metal bands to come out of Eastern Canada, the brutal quintet have teamed up with NoCleanSinging for the premiere of their new music video “System Failure”. The video was shot during the band’s performance at La Grande Guignolee Underground #11 during December 2018 to raise money and food for local Montreal charity SunYouth along with other well known Quebec metal bands BARF, Cryptopsy and more.
Vocalist Stef Jomphe comments:
“We’re thrilled to be sharing this video with you all! We shot this during ‘La Grande Guignolée Underground’ and it reflects the symbiosis between our crowd and us, and System Failure is the perfect mix of catchy and technical! Next time we’re on the road, come sing with us: Failure! Failure!”

About:
Assembled in 2003 to infiltrate, build and destroy, Gatineau, QC’s INSURRECTION is an aural onslaught assaulting witnesses in both languages of French and English. Known for blending calculated technicality with a signature mixture of merciless death metal, the band has emerged to be one of the most prominent Eastern Canadian metal bands.
“We are a hybrid of the best and the worst that the metal underground has to offer, completely familiar, yet hard to pin down, better categorized as the many oddly familiar faces that death metal can take.”says band founder and vocalist Stef Jomphe.
Their 2009 debut release ‘Prologue’ gave true life to their monstrosity, the formation launched their second release 2010′s ‘Fracture’, a dark prophecy of unforgivable times and a brutal soundtrack to the fall of man. It pushed the limits with every outing, creating Insurrection to become more than the sum of its parts, but a merciless abomination.
In 2013, their third album ‘Prototype’ produced by Topon Das (Fuck The Facts) was unleashed on Quebec label Galy Records and another well acclaimed brutal assault that converted the unwitting to their legion.
Pushing development to blasphemous levels and quickly spreading their notoriety to areas of Quebec and Ontario. INSURRECTION continues to expand and modulate to corrupt the entire East coast of Canada returning with their new album “Extraction”. A ten-track aberration, ready to shock and blast fans to the next life, the album is produced by Pierre Rémillard at Wild Studio (Cryptopsy, Obliveon, Anonymus, Voivod, Krisiun, Ghoulunatics, Despised Icon, Beneath the Massacre, Gorguts, Martyr, etc) and features guest vocals from Bruno Bernier (Obliveon) on “Data Extracted … End Transmission”. The album was released on October 6, 2017, via Galy Records.
