Calgary’s riff wizards Woodhawk were supposed to hit the road this week for their cross Canada tour from March 26th to May 23rd in support of their latest album “Violent Nature” released this past November. The tour, unfortunately like many others was postponed due to the global Covid 19 situation. As of now, the trio will still perform on the last two dates scheduled in British Columbia (listed below).

As Woodhawk waits to reschedule all their tour dates, they’re still very excited to share their new music video ‘Heartstopper’ via its premiere on Metal Injection HERE.

The band adds:

“This video was a lot of fun to make and all of our first time “acting” in anything. Kevin Keegan and Rob Thespian were a pleasure to work with. It was a lot of work in a short amount of time to do this video, but everyone busted their ass off to make it all come together. The video tells the story of a creepy kidnapper who is obsessed with the band, so he kidnaps them and holds them captive in his home. It’s dark, it’s funny, it’s musical. We loved it, and are happy to share it with everyone finally.”

Woodhawk‘s sophomore full length “Violent Nature” steps away from the science fiction themes evident on their previous release 2017’s “Beyond The Sun” and takes a more therapeutic turn. Putting a lot of time and production into the new album with producer Jesse Gander (Rain City Recorders), Woodhawk has worked really hard to capture energy and emotion.

The band explains:

“On previous efforts, we wrote from a science fiction standpoint. It’s where we all were at, at the point in our lives and reflected what we wanted to say and represent. Now, we believe in honesty and find the therapeutic side of music. This album has been an expressive honest view into our lives over the past 2 years.”

For fans of Black Sabbath, The Sword, and Clutch, “Violent Nature” is available on Woodhawk‘s Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and all major music platforms.

Show Dates:
May 22 – Invermere, BC – Ullr Bar
May 23 – Nelson, BC – The Royal

About:
From the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains hails Calgary, AB’s rock n’ roll trio Woodhawk. Masters of the straight-ahead riff rock, Woodhawk blends classic rock influences of Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy with smooth grooves, cranked amps, and heavy-hitting drums. The coalescence of melodious vocals, catchy riffs, and dynamic instrumentation creates a vast soundscape for the listener to explore. With lyrical themes of science fiction and sorcery to more recent themes of struggles and triumph, Woodhawk wears their heart on their sleeve.

Woodhawk began in 2014 with the release of a self-titled EP, followed by the critically acclaimed full length “Beyond The Sun” in 2017. A melodically rich and varied album, steeped in science fiction themes and packed with undeniably catchy riffs, “Beyond the Sun” cemented Woodhawk’s status as a desert rock band with unlimited potential to break through into the mainstream. Rather than taking their freewheelin’ brand of lyrical chrono-metal into the comfortable bracket of factory-produced R’n’R, Woodhawk elected to explore the road less traveled.

Returning to Rain City Recorders in Vancouver, BC during February 2019, Woodhawk worked with Jesse Gander (Anciients, Bison, 3 Inches of Blood, Japandroids, Pack AD) to record their sophomore album “Violent Nature”. Over the course of 2 weeks, Woodhawk tracked their strongest effort yet, producing songs that address the struggles of mental health straight on, and laying it all on the line. Woodhawk’s new material abandons the world of fantasy in pursuit of emotional authenticity and self-discovery.

Our heroes’ quest for clarity and independence has landed them on the precipice of ambition and accomplishment. It’s a true turning point of entry for Woodhawk’s lofty yet assertive life-goals. The elegant anthems and pulsing chords of the next phase in the group’s sonic evolution can scarcely be contained. Grounded with one foot in the present and another in the dynamic future, Woodhawk’s outlook is as boundless as their command of their genre. With the new album due out on November 2, 2019, their intelligence, inventiveness and an uncanny knack for generating timeless tunes are ready to flood the senses and tug at the spirit with an easy-going nonchalance that embraces the audience with confidence and jean-jacketed arms.

Woodhawk features guitarist Turner Midzain, bassist Mike Badmington, and drummer Kevin Nelson. They have taken the stage at the Commodore Ballroom, Sled Island, and UP+DT, in addition to multiple Canadian tours. They have also shared the stage in support of Airbourne, Truckfighters, Elder, and The Shrine. Woodhawk has their sights set on touring North America and Europe to bring their highly energetic and captivating live performance to new audiences.

“Their brand of this style sounds far more refreshing and has a modern rock ‘n roll kind of aura to go along, slightly ringing in signs of alternative influence. The end result is as if Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy had a child born in the age of Chevelle. With that said, this is immaculate. ” – Indy Metal Vault

“Violent Nature kicks off with the slithering riffs of “Snake in the Grass,” which comes crawling up slowly before striking with a venomous fuzz-riffy attack, and a soaring, fist-raising chorus. “Weightless Light” gets my head nodding right away with a solid stoner rock riff, while giving off a pretty decent Monster Truck vibe in the chorus – I can see why they made it the pre-release single.” – Hellbound

“This is what music is about. When you put yourself out there, you connect with others on a deeper level and that’s always a win.” – The Music Below

“going by the lead single “Weightless Light” it seems like whatever they’re making the songs about, Woodhawk still bring the same sense of songcraft to their material, which is always good to know.” – The Obelisk

“Violent Nature surpasses their debut and then some; the Rocky Mountain trio have harnessed the best of the past, given it a fresh coat of paint, made me smile and just enjoy rock and roll in its purest form…” – The Sleeping Shaman

“In order for a band like this to succeed they have to be really good at what they do, and Woodhawk is very much that. They stand somewhere between protometal and first wave metal. Not quite as heavy as Sabbath and not nearly as classic-rocky as Deep Purple. But you put this record on, let it play, and see how long it takes you to notice that your foot… It’s on my vinyl to buy list.” – Glacially Musical

“The music and lyrics are born from genuine experiences, transpiring to add depth and a satisfying quantity to each song. Overall, this means Violent Nature is a real piece of music in every sense. Definitely recommended for fans of metal, heavy metal, traditional heavy metal, hard rock/classic rock fans, desert rock, stoner rock, and blues.” – Mosh Nerd Republic

Calgary’s Woodhawk are at it again with a new album being released in November! With it comes their second single “Heartsopper” is premiering via TheObelisk.net HERE.

The track comes from “Violent Nature”, the band’s sophomore album, which steps away from the science fiction themes evident on their previous release 2017’s “Beyond The Sun” and takes a more therapeutic turn, as the band explains:

“On previous efforts, we wrote from a science fiction standpoint. It’s where we all were at, at the point in our lives and reflected what we wanted to say and represent. Putting a lot of time and production into the new album with producer Jesse Gander (Rain City Recorders), Woodhawk has worked really hard to capture energy and emotion. The second single is an observation of how we all have friends who live different lives from our own. Vocalist/guitarist Turner explains further:

“‘Heartstopper’ was the first song we wrote for the album and was definitely reworked more than anything else on the record. Usually, we scrap the first few we write until we find our groove. But this one just stuck. It tells the tale of how I have friends who live in completely different worlds and live totally different lives. One one side, I have this friend who has faced every major health complication, someone, their age should ever have faced and perceived. But still has the most positive outlook on life. On the other side, the friends who abuse substances and cheat death to the closest point and have no true appreciation for their own life. The juxtaposition in this situation just kind of hit home with all of us.”

For fans of Black Sabbath, The Sword, and Clutch, “Violent Nature” is available for pre-order via the band’s Bandcamp.

Calgary’s Woodhawk are at it again with a new album being released in November! With it comes their first single “Weightless Light” is premiering via The Sludgelord HERE.

Now, we believe in honesty and find the therapeutic side of music. This album has been an expressive honest view into our lives over the past 2 years.”

Putting a lot of time and production into the new album with producer Jesse Gander (Rain City Recorders), Woodhawk has worked really hard to capture energy and emotion. Based on insomnia, their first single “Weightless Light” has an intimate meaning for vocalist/guitarist Turner, as he explains:

“The song stems from my struggle to sleep for a few months over the fall of 2018. I would wake up every night at the same time and lay awake staring at nothing. My mind would race and inhibit me from sleeping, no matter what. So I would lay in this state of almost non-existence where I couldn’t tell if I was asleep, awake, alive or dead. It was an odd feeling of vulnerability. To pass the time, I would get up and play guitar in the middle of the night, until I felt I could attempt to go back to sleep for the last 45 minutes before my alarm.”

Oct 18 – Woodhawt Ones – 8pm MT
(The band will be eating all varieties of hot sauces all while answering questions via Facebook and Instagram live)

#12 on National Loud Top 20 for 2017- Canadian College Radio Charts (Earshot) (Album – Beyond The Sun)

The best Canadian metal of 2017: Top 15, according to Hellbound.ca – #13 – Woodhawk (Album – Beyond The Sun)

“Calgarian riff-riders Woodhawk kicked off the proceedings, hitting all the gritty notes with their raucous roadhouse metal. Propane and Jack flowed freely as the golden western trio woke all them witches with their thematic rock fury.” – Beatroute (AB)

“The riffs are so catchy you’ll be humming them long after you remove headphones and the songs are so good you will be craving the next chance you get to sit down and listen to them again.” – The Sludgelord – Beyond The Sun Review (May 2017)

“Taking influence from bands such as Kyuss, The Sword and Truckfighters. Woodhawk offer a refreshing style of Psych Stoner Metal with moments of Fuzz and Desert Rock that add extra grit to their music.” – Outlaws of The Sun

“Take Red Fang, The Sword and Witchcraft, strip them of nearly all distortion and add a canny knack for catchy as fuck riffs, with a psychedelic edge, and you arrive at the dusty doorstep of Calgarian stoner rockers Woodhawk!” – Worship Metal

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 22, 2019

For fans of Truckfighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, ZZ Top

Vancouver’s GETAWAY VAN Premiere Music Video “Lord I’ve Been Running” via TheObelisk

Self Titled Debut Out Now!

New to the Vancouver rock scene, GETAWAY VAN has been maneuvering through venues to bring their slightly out of control punky blues stoner fuzz rock to entertained audiences for the past year. Collectively, the band shares a broad taste in music and using that to their advantage it’s translated into a record full of different styles and influences that they recently released on February 23rd of this year.

With great praise for their single “Lord I’ve Been Running”, the band has put together a new music video and premiering it on TheObelisk at the following link: http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2019/04/22/getaway-van-lord-ive-been-running-video-premiere/

The band adds:

“‘Lord I’ve Been Running’ is the second single from our debut, full-length album. Written by bassist, Zack Fox, this is a song about the tribulations of life, and the toll it can take on a person. We’ve all always loved this song due to the high energy and it’s almost desperate nature. The powerful vocals and incessantly running guitars really seem to get people moving, and help make it a memorable track.  It’s certainly a song that everyone can find a connection to on a personal level, and as such, it was the natural choice for our first music video to come from this album.”

GETAWAY VAN‘s self-titled debut album follows the band’s two 2018 released EPs, ‘Brokedown’ and ‘Burnouts’. The band showcases a sound that is foot-to-the-floor rock n’ roll sure to shake rooms like a straight piped V8. Bringing roots of stoner rock, blues, punk, and folk, GETAWAY VAN is your very own experience of controlled chaos.

The band comments:

“Welcome to the world of Getaway Van. This is our debut full-length, self-titled album. This is something that we are all really proud of. Something that all four of us have seen coming for the better part of a year and a half. Now that it’s here, we are stoked to share it with everyone. You’ll be able to pick out basically every sub-genre that’s been derived from rock in this album, with lyrical content that spans from self-loathing and depression, to love, to serial killers, to cars. We really hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it! (And as much as we REALLY enjoy playing it). Thanks for listening.”

The self-titled album is available for stream on the following platforms:
YouTube
Bandcamp
iTunes
Amazon

Show Dates:
May 11 – Vancouver, BC – Bourbon

“Man, never thought I’d find a band that bridges the gap between Fu Manchu stoner grooves and CANCON radio rock like this.” – Hellbound

““Getaway Van” this is fun, it knows how to get in trouble, and it knows how to cover its tracks. Get it. That’s a no brainer, requiring no thought at all.” – Maximum Volume Music

“Getaway Van is a very talented band with a variety of musical styles that captures the attention of many musical tastes. These guys are good for any sort of party setting. Think warm summer nights, cold drinks and good company.” – Maehem Underground Media

“These boys put out a fine album that really showcased their abilities.” – Metal Temple

“Continuing in the same vein of Truckfighters-esque stoner rock heard on January’s Burnouts EP, we are treated to a much fuller sound on this release… It’s meatier, it’s harder, it’s heavier. If that sounds a bit pornographic, you’re not far off, because this is a dirty record — full of fuzz and viscera.” – Vancity Rockers

Coming from a personal place, the lyrics to the single were written by Zach Fox and it’s hard hitting with a real classic rock feel.

“This song has a little bit of everything. Some Zeppelin, ZZ Top, RHCP, all wrapped up in a Getaway Van bow.  This heavy, classic rock tune is about life taking everything out of you until you feel like you have nothing left to give.  The narrator is pleading with God/the universe/anyone who will listen, to just give him a break.”

BIO:

Hey, we’re Getaway Van: Four fellas who are just tryin’ to make you feel like you’re flying down the side of a mountain in a speeding 80s cargo van.

It’s a very teamwork oriented approach and people can expect to not be able to look away from the bouncing and jumping around on stage complete with them occasionally taking their clothes off. Taking the desert rock vibe and making it a little aggressive and little out of control, the audience can definitely expect to have a great time.

In 2018, Getaway Van recorded two EPs, ‘Brokedown’ and ‘Burnouts’ and in February 2019 they are geared to release their debut self titled full length featuring the single ‘Lord I’ve Been Running’. It’s foot-to-the-floor rock n’ roll that shakes rooms like a straight piped V8. Bringing roots of stoner rock, blues, punk, and folk, a Getaway Van performance is your very own experience of controlled chaos.

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 20, 2018

For fans of Tool, Mastodon, Truckfighters, Kyuss, Pink Floyd

Prog-Sphere Premiere: Canadian Cinematic Prog HARNESSING THE UNIVERSE New Video “Beyond The Bright”

Created By German Filmmaker Joerg Steineck

The Cambridge English Dictionary describes the universe as ‘the whole system of created things.’ Well… Saskatchewan’s HARNESSING THE UNIVERSE are a band more than capable of living up to the infinite possibilities of their name, harnessing the power of the universe to create music of great spirit and originality. As the great Stephen Hawking memorably said, “Always look up at the stars not down at your feet!”

Inspired by Black Mountain, Stoned Jesus and Brant Bjork, the band’s sound is best described as “powerful, interesting, serious, spacious and epic! Meditation Music For Metalheads!”

With plans for their follow up album “In The After” in 2018 to their 2015 self-titled debut, HARNESSING THE UNIVERSE are sharing with fans one more music video to close that chapter before they begin the next.

Pairing up with Prog-Sphere.com, HTU is premiering their latest video for “Beyond The Bright”. A beautiful cinematic video created by German filmmaker Joerg Steineck.

“We are trying to bring the listener on a ride with us…Longer song lengths allow for peaks and valleys in the soundscape and the change in feel from upbeat to chill and back again in the course of the same track…We want to take the listener on a musical journey of epic highs and lows. It’s not party music! It’s something you put on when you’re thinking about life and you need a soundtrack to back up your thoughts.” says drummer Travis Weibel.
