About:
What started in the summer of 2012 has managed to grow into a blend of chaotic and dissonant hardcore. Hopeless Youth takes influence of everything from thrash metal, crust punk to even black metal and doom. They manage to keep it rough and in your face, while having you sing along at the same time. The four piece from Montreal, QC manages to make every show as loud, unpredictable, and entertaining as a train wreck. Not to say they fall apart on stage, but rather put themselves in a position to achieve a certain catharsis through violently pouring themselves into every performance. After releasing their debut record ‘Disgust’ in 2014 on Candlelight Records, they’ve returned in 2016 with a new E.P.  ‘Devil, Walk With Me’, which has been released on their own label Rainville Records, as well as digitally via Pluto Records. This new set of songs is sure to turn heads and blow speakers. Enjoy it at your own risk.

Calgary Rockers THE GROUNDS Release New Single ‘Lilac’

Group1Edit 300

What sets The Grounds apart from other young bands on the rise is their unique ability to achieve multipart harmonies that often include all four band members. Barely adults, this young Calgary based alternative rock band form their sound with a blend of influences that include grunge and classic rock, an ensemble of vocal harmonies as well as individual instrument parts intertwining to create a unique and memorable sound.

Only being around since 2011, the band has grown and developed quickly showing a level of maturity and professionalism that is rare at this stage of their career. With focus and determination, they won the Original Music Showcase 2014 in Calgary, placing first against 30 bands, most of whom were far more experienced.

Winning over local promoters, venues and fans has seen The Grounds open for touring bands like 40 Sons, Tommy Alto and Pigeon Park as well as local heavyweights, Open AIR. The Grounds have a solid future in front of them and it starts with their new single ‘Lilac’, which can be heard at the following links below.

“We felt Lilac was an excellent choice for our first official single. The feel of the song really isolates each individual member and plays to their strengths” – Mark Shackleton

“The opening set by Psychostick — a band best known in Kansas City for its 98.9 The Rock staple “Beer!” — was deeply amusing. Heavy metal is ripe for parody, and the jokers in the Arizona band mercilessly mock the genre’s inherent silliness. Psychostick’s presence reflected the night’s theme of good, dirty fun.” – Kansas City Star

“”The grooves are infectious and easy to nod along to”- Metalunderground.com

“”Psychostick continues to be the most fun band in rock’n’roll with “Sandwich,” twenty-four tracks that will have you banging your head while you laugh your ass off at the same time.” – RoughEdge.com

“I found myself laughing out loud, track after ridiculous track, eager to hear what nonsense was to follow.” – Metal-Rules.com

“If you like humorous metal like Polkadot Cadaver you might just laugh yourself to death by this new album (Space Vampires vs Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D by Psychostick. It’s actually very like a comedy show on metal music. Totally awesome and insane.” – MetalLikey

“A crazy musical storm truly one of the most entertaining and energetic show’s we’ve covered in a long time and most defiantly the most humorous!” – OrlandoBands.com

“Do you want to metal? Psychostick wants to metal. On their newest, heaviest and funniest effort Sandwich, the clowned princes of humorcore metal their mad-hatted heads off.” – HeavyMetal.About.com

“Listening to a Psychostick album is like eavesdropping on college bros riffing on each other or just jamming in their garage.” – ThatDevilMusic.com

“When listening to a Psychostick album, you can usually expect two things: outstanding guitar riffs and hooks and then, and most importantly, you can almost always expect to laugh…at least once or twice.” – TheFrontReport.com

“Psychostick is notorious for a few things, two of which being off-the-wall album titles (2003’s We Couldn’t Think of a Title” and 2009’s Sandwich) and hilarious lyrics meshed with face-melting instrumentals.” – TheFrontRowReport.com

“…the Weird Al Yankovic of Metal.” – examiner.com

“…the more you listen, the funnier and harder it becomes.” – rocknycliveandrecorded.com

“It’s a magical moment when you see a band doing exactly what they love to do.” – TheRealAtlanta.com

“Psychostick wrapped more amazingness into about 35 minutes than I have ever really seen in concert.” – behindthehype.com

“Psychostick may come off as idiot savants considering a lot of what they sing about are everyday common crap such as oranges, hoagies, salsa and taking showers, but the Texas taco munchers who once released an album called We Couldn’t Think of a Title in 2006 are smarter than you think.” – The Metal Minute

“Psychostick release another solid album with over-the-top hilarity.” Sputnik Music – Review of Sandwich

About:

What started as two brothers and their best friend getting together for some freestyle jams and demo recordings in 2005 soon evolved into enough written material for two EPs and the birth of a new full-blown band, Blind Race, in 2007.

Drawing inspiration from their love of fast cars and the intrigue of driving them blind, as well as modern-day racial issues and the idea that we are all the same, the award nominated (Toronto Independent Music Awards: Best Live Metal Act Nomination (2012), Best Metal Act Nomination (2010)), Blind Race arrived at a name packed with meaning to match its melting pot sound.

Putting emphasis on musical identity and creativity, the then Toronto four-piece released Seeing Red in 2008, unleashed Lost in 2012 and grew to a five piece that is now ready to unveil its third EP, Come and Get It.

Going back to raw, air thrusting, 7-string powered tracks such as “Come and Get It” and “Hypocrite” to eastern influenced charismatic progressions in “Truth or Dare” and Latin derived contrasts of “Hopeless”, this EP is just the tip of the iceberg, which is the diverse style of Blind Race. All the music in this EP was written using a very simple philosophy by guitar player Costas Kentros. Just play what you feel. “With the initial riff of each song, the gates just opened and the music flowed out and created a statement for each song.  From love to hate, to truth or dare, standing your ground and those times when you just want to kill the pain with a bottle of Jack.  These songs cover our most common situations and emotions.” says Kentros.

“Blind Race blast out sustain driven and acoustically inspired slabs of no nonsense rock, heavily influenced by 90’s masters but embed with a new energy that make them deserving of a massive following”  – Spenny Bullen

“a great connection with the audience at the Velvet Underground. The crowd got really engaged in the concert when Blind Race played their metal cover version of Elvis Presley’s ”Hound Dog;” a fine version spiced up with a little bit of heavy guitar and double pedal bass drums.” – Toronto Metal Music Examiner (Live Review)

Debuting their album ‘The Healing Powers of Hate’ during summer 2013 with great reception from fans, media and topping Canadian College Radio Loud Charts, Montreal, QC groove metal band BORNBROKEN is proud to return this fall 2014 after a few line up changes with a new track ‘Watch The World Unwind’ featuring their new line up with extreme vocalist Jeff Boisvert (ex-Forbidden Sin) and the ferocious drumming of Steve Burns (Mythosis). They will also be performing their first show with the new line up supporting The Agonist on November 7th in Montreal, QC at Foufounes Electriques along side Ogenix, Red Skies and Temptist. For show and ticket info, please visit the following link here.

Guitarist Mike Decker comments:

“We would like to first thank everyone who have bought, listened, and become one with the broken on our first release “The Healings Powers of Hate.” Now for what comes next, we had to make some lineup changes but sometimes change is for the better”.

The addition of Steve Burns and Jeff Boisvert on vocals has given BornBroken a new dimension as we move forward. We are truly happy with choosing the The Grid and producer Chris Donaldson for our next CD, as you will hear, we are pushing new boundaries with our sound and approach and Chris has the knowledge to help with that.

The future of BornBroken is far from over as we are in the middle of writing and recording 2.0. As we keep some things for now shrouded in shadows we are proud to give you a front row seat to ‘Watch The World Unwind’.

Hear the cry once more….“

BornBroken‘s debut album ‘The Healing Powers of Hate’ was released in June 2013. The album was fan voted as Album of The Week (June 10th) on Revolver Magazine, along with debuting #8 on Canadian College Loud Charts, plus being named one of the best unsigned Heavy Metal Bands for June 2013 by Drago’s Dungeon on About.com – Heavy Metal. They have also received great admiration from Yell Magazine! quoting ‘This is a debut metal album of epic proportions. If it’s not the Canadian metal album of the year, it’s certainly in the running for Canadian debut metal album.’ and TheFrontRowReport.com quoting ‘BornBroken may be the best metal band you probably haven’t heard of. Those who love hard, heavy, angry metal are in for a treat and may find a new favorite in BornBroken.’.

About:

BornBroken was formed with one simple mission in mind: Help the masses find a voice, a face, an “X” that marks the spot through the sounds of beating skins, metal strings and broken chords.

After months of writing and hours spent in the studio, BornBroken managed to take every emotion they felt, put it to music, build off of past battle scars and create a record where listeners will feel they are part of the storyline.

On their debut album, The Healing Powers of Hate, BornBroken play out not only what life has given them but also what they want to give back: truth, integrity, perseverance, loyalty and faith in humanity’s struggle for equality.

“Montreal’s BornBroken simply go for the throat and never let up. Their debut record The Healing Powers of Hate is a no holds barred punch to the face. Combining the aggression of Lamb of God with the riffs of Pantera makes for a modern day polished metal release. A concept record based around mankind’s ability to overcome adversity and rise up against it, the message is powerful and thought provoking.” – About.com – Heavy Metal – Drago’s Dungeon: June 2013 The Month’s Best Unsigned Heavy Metal Bands

“BornBroken may be the best metal band you probably haven’t heard of. Those who love hard, heavy, angry metal are in for a treat and may find a new favorite in BornBroken. Their latest album, The Healing Powers of Hate, is the perfect combination of heavy meets melodic and combines what you’d hear from Lamb of God, Hatebreed and Five Finger Death Punch into one powerful, melodic, fist-pounding metal experience. There’s not one dull moment here and any metal head should at least check this album out. Rating: 8.5/10″ – TheFrontRowReport

“These extreme metallers have done an amazing job of combining death and thrash without treading on melodic death too much…The quality of the recording is also up to standards, including some gravity blasts that’ll have you shouting, “fuck yeah!”…This is a debut metal album of epic proportions. If it’s not the Canadian metal album of the year, it’s certainly in the running for Canadian debut metal album.” – 4/5 – Yell Magazine

“‘The Healing Power of Hate’ is a well executed album, tight and well produced, at times with strong hardcore influence. I liked the strong profile that the drums took, the guitar breaks were exciting and all the way through the vocals were first rate. The time taken to create it is very evident in the final result.” 4.5/5 – MetalTalk

“From the Canadian Mecca of metal, Montreal, comes upstart antagonists of aggression BornBroken and their debut The Healing Powers of Hate. From the opening moments of lead track “Can’t Quiet the Riot” it’s obvious these boys aim to take their hybrid of groove metal and metalcore and jam it right down your throat. Drawing heavily from the likes of Pantera and Lamb of God, the first meal of the day is a pit-ready anthem. Working off catchy as fuck, breakdown inflected riffs BornBroken mercilessly pound the listener to pulp. There is absolutely no doubt people leave a BornBroken show with injuries.” – Hellbound

“Montreal Metalheads spawn a beast of a debut album…Over the years, there has been the odd occasion when a debut album has really struck me between the eyes, knocked me to the ground and given a damn good slapping (in the musical sense of course). Here is the latest in that line, an album of intense and brutal passion mixed with a groove based element that had me hooked from track one.” – Planet Mosh

“This album is 44 minutes of pure adrenaline infused death-thrash metal at its finest. The Healing Powers Of Hate captures the voice of ‘the broken’ and grants an identity to the thousands of so called misfits that struggle to find a place in our society. Marching to the sounds of brutal bass, slamming percussion, high-speed guitar solos and violently powerful vocals, the broken shall rise.” – LouderThanHell – 5/5

“The Healing Power of Hate is a great example of why Canadian metal is regarded around the world as being of very high quality: Because, quite simply, it is”. – GoetiaMetal

“It’s aggressive, fierce, and well-crafted” – Bloody Underated

“I especially liked the guitars’ tone and the bass omnipresence, which add a thick extra layer of heaviness to the overall sound and prevent the album from feeling too polished or light. A well-crafted album without frills: as I mentioned above, BornBroken is not here to be cute but instead to knock you out with a direct hit in the face and they achieve this perfectly.” – Metal Made In Canada

“I was sucked in after the first couple of songs and if I had a label I would sign them in a heartbeat! I understand that this release was self-produced and if that is the case these boys are ten steps ahead of the game and will have labels banging through their doors in no time.” – XplosiveMetal

“Many of the hooks and riffs are excellent, they absolutely destroy my speakers, and the bedroom mosh commences.” – MetalStorm

“this record succeeds because it is so damn fun to listen to and the aggression seems just 2nd nature to these guys.” – Imhotep

“I thoroughly enjoyed “The Healing Powers of Hate”. It’s got breakdowns, screaming solos and funky bass, three of my favourite things. I also liked the way the band incorporated other non-musical features, such as the sounds of sirens and spoken lyrics. It’s hard to hate on this album, despite the healing powers the emotion offers. ” – Metal Temple

“The Healing Powers Of Hate is the debut release from these up-and-comers and is loaded with hard-hitting riffs and even heavier breakdowns. With this album BornBroken have resurrected the intense metallic sounds of bands the likes of A Life Once Lost, Hatebreed, Nora, and Arise And Ruin that once dominated the North American metal scene. It’s wonderful to hear a band like BornBroken bringing back what some might consider the peak sound of modern metal.”

– MusikUniverse

“Musically, BornBroken are a more solid, and extremely heavy, lot. Simon Savard and Mike Decker’s surging, Dimebag Darrell-inspired grooves hit like haymakers throughout, aided by the sort of dry, ultra-punchy production Terry Date used to achieve such brutal majesty with Pantera, Unearth, Deftones and on White Zombie’s Astro Creep: 2000. The sound here is huge – especially for a self-released effort – clear and quite pummeling.” – Metal-Rules

“It’s not often when you find yourself deep inside of a storyline with an album especially a Metal album, and this is exactly where you find yourself being drowned in throughout The Healing Powers of Hate. Every lyric and every song has a purpose and sheds the tearing storyline that is BornBroken. Throughout every well timed riff through the endless pounding of the skins and through each scream and Growl BornBroken brings you down to their deep hell and shows you their vision through The Healing Powers Of Hate.” – KingstonMusicReviews

“BornBroken deserves broad attention. They’ve already made a very big impression in their native Montreal, both for their live performances as well as their music in general. I honestly don’t know that much about the Montreal metal scene, but I do know that it is getting bigger and more competitive. For these guys to emerge as a local favorite suggests something of their overall quality. Give this one a spin.” SeaofTranquility – 4/5

“BornBroken’s Healing Powers Of Hate is a powerful album that falls in line with the likes of Pantera, Lamb Of God, and Hatebreed with some thrash inspirations from the likes of Testament, and Slayer.” – Emurg.com

“I must say that BornBroken’s amalgamation of melodeath, metalcore and modern thrash works very well. It is well balanced and captures only the good aspects of these three genres, reminding us that, despite all the not-so-interesting bands that roam the three genres, melodeath, metalcore and modern thrash do have a lot to offer…Fans of Pro-Pain, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Machine Head and a wide variety of modern metal bands should definitely check out this potent debut album.” – 4/5 – MetalMusicArchives

“What BornBroken have done here is create an album that ticks pretty much every box on the seriously heavy tick sheet, managing to put together an album which is heavy, melodic, dark, haunting, and yet uplifting at the same time. Representing the pain and angst that went into making it, this album will connect with your soul, and remind you of what heavy is.” – Loud-Stuff.com

“I was digging these guys all the way through and just wanted to keep playing the album over and over again. If you were to mixed elements of PANTERA, SEPULTURA, HATEBREED, SLAYER, LAMB OF GOD, HAVOK & SLIPKNOT together you would end up with BornBroken. They have been building up a following of fans in Canada and now are ready for the world. They have a fan for life in me now!” Beowolf Reviews

“The track Control has a super hooky melodic line that rides over a thicker groove.  It really fills my body with warmth while also making my blood boil.  This echoes with a bit of Gothenburg stylistic trappings without going overboard.  It really is a tasty riff.” – Nocturnal Cult

– 8/10 – Boulevard Brutal

“So watch for it. Listen to it. These Montreal Metal Thrash-core compadres are definitely onto something different, and not only with regard to the local scene, but for Metal in general. The BornBroken boys are biting off as much as they can chew by creating a heavy-duty concept album, fusing the powers of all their influences and generating a sound that fluctuates between latter day Sepultura and mid-career Lamb of God.”

– OndesChocs

“…At the first look, the album looks like a collector’s item.”
“…The Healing Powers of Hate as a sound comparable to the big names of the industry…I have the strong impression that everything was thought of on this CD. It’s a very well done album from A to Z. The Healing Powers of Hate from BornBroken is nothing less then a must!!” – Musique D’Une Nation

“BornBroken is the future of Québec Metal, with 10 titles to discover, even on stage, since the group demonstrates an uncanny and totally uncommon, energetic stage presence. They have poured their guts into the making of this introductory album, their own monies and a wealth of professionalism, which must be recognized. Bravo for an excellent album that one just doesn’t tire of listening to.” – Québec-Métal

“…le disque est marqué au fer rouge d’une intensité menaçante qui n’épargnera aucun tympan.’’- Bande à part (Radio-Canada)

“they’ve got a good sense of humor, and they sound top-notch” – Metal Sucks

“boozy blast of heathen prog” – Team Rock

“Le metal a du talent.”  – Metal France

“If you’d like a taste of the brew Protokult has on tap, check out the eclectic, hoppy folk thrasher “Get Me a Beer”. Indeed this mix of traditional folk, thrash metal, death metal, and other genres will have you stomping your feet and drinking too fast.`- Yell Magazine

“The rousing opening track “Get Me A Beer” is alcohol-fueled folk metal with similarities to bands like Korpiklaani, but they have many other facets… It’s an extremely diverse album” – Heavy Metal. About.com

“Ah this album was a pleasure to review. So many albums are a slog to get through, but I was sorry when No Beer In Heaven ended…All the band are excellent musicians and you can hear their joy at playing their music. Ekaterina Pvatlova brings another dimension to the band too; her vocals are nothing you’ve heard in metal before, and I love the touch she brings with the woodwind instruments…I love the track “Get Me A Beer” – it could be marketed as a cure for depression. Elsewhere, the contrast between folk and metal works very harmoniously: heavy and uplifting at the same time. Joyous stuff! The band also have a good sense of humour, and while they can be serious, this is an enjoyable life-affirming album to listen to, which is as it should be. Our lives are brief; we should try and enjoy our spell on this earth! I love the album artwork and presentation too. This is a band the world needs to hear more of. Highly recommended! – Hellbound

“a superb album. Protokult gives folk-metal a new nice dimension. Their progressive folk-metal approach is a very delicious one. Don’t let the ‘beer-titles’ fool you, the band goals are far beyond beer-humpaa. They’re far more serious, despite of the sometimes quite merry tunes. This is one of the best folk-metal albums I’ve heard this year” – Folk-Metal.nl

“Protokult is a colourful collective, made up of four guys and a lady…It is a versatile album…progressive twists and turns in the songs and surprising approaches.” – Lords of Metal

“The very second I started to listen to No Beer In Heaven and “Get Me A Beer” came on I was instantly hooked. Instantly Protokult kills it with a killer opening riff that is a combination of electric guitar and synthesizer. “Get Me A Beer” has one of the wildest mix of genres and styles that I have heard in quite some time.” – Kingston Music Reviews

“Let’s mark the list down, shall we: Awesome Folk music spanning different areas of sound and direction, check! Creative and art work based around an old fashioned beer hall, check! And last, but certainly not least, BEER themed music!!!!.” – Metal Temple

“Folk and metal comes together in a epic way with Protokult. The mix is perfect for the party and other festivity’s that needs a nice kick in the ass, like a metal heads funeral. Hooks, beer and the ever changing change ups makes this LP one for the books.” Tommy Tee – The Metal Factory on Insane Realm Radio.com

“Although PROTOKULT is a Canadian-based group, the members come from various backgrounds (Polish, Irish, Russian, Czech) and the result is a marvellous mix of Canadian and international forces. The goal is to unite these cultures into one sound, balancing tradition and folklore with heavy, thrash and black metal for head-bangers everywhere.” – Demented Magazine

“Most bands go on the road to promote the CD and encourage fans to buy it but this album would actually encourage me to go and see the band. The music speaks and says that this band will be well worth watching live.” – Extreme Metal Television

“Anyone who has seen this band live knows that the beer maidens will be pouring potent potables into ever thirsty mouths at the front of the stage. Before this delightful feature comes to fruition, the fans come in close, sing along, and dance the metal jig during the pagan musical onslaught from the band. We are instantly transported to villages, and forests of another era.” – Metal Master Kingdom (Live Review)

“All in all No Beer In Heaven is an extra large package of dark folk metal here to drink and party with you. If you’re a folk fan, be sure to give them a listen. The album is a solid piece and an enjoyment to even non-folk fans. Oh, and they also love the ‘Water of Life’ (that is vodka if you didn’t know already).” – Two Guys Metal Reviews

“They belong amongst the ranks of bands like Moonsorrow and Skyforger…Almost every song twists and turns through several folk metal transformations, without ever tapping into cheesy or overly tired clichés.”- Metal Observer (2010 review for Ancestral Anthems)

“Their songs pulse and writhe like a sinuous living thing.”- Exclaim (2012 review of Marzena)

About:

Founded in 2009 as a six-piece and named after the Soviet dog who became one of the first animals to travel to space, the band unleashed a self-released album in 2010, then hit the road, sharing the stage with the likes of All Shall Perish, Kataklysm, Necronomicon and Unleash the Archers, before temporarily backing away from the spotlight.

Driven by a thirst for evolution, LAIKA spent two years constructing and writing its upcoming full-length album, ‘Somnia’, filling it with melodic hooks, ominous keys and lyrics that are bound to get stuck in listeners’ heads to an almost maddening degree. Brace yourself, as this fall; LAIKA will hit the scene hard, just like they did all those years ago.

“Laika combine the Gothenburg sound with a North American groove and intensity, the result is a giant slab of kick ass melodic death metal. Sommia the groups’ second full length release consists of 8 finely crafted songs and a dreamy and eloquent intro track called “The Restless Mind”. There some great guitar work on “Somnia” especially on tracks like “Fidelity” and the albums lone instrumental “Dream of Nothing”. The musicianship on this release is all-around solid. Vocalist Jordan Dorge has a powerful growl that cuts through the bands layered sound and the rhythm section add some crushing heaviness…a damn good melodic death metal album. If you like the classic Gothenburg sound do yourself a favor and pick up the latest release from Laika.” – Extreme Metal Television

“This Canadian sextet play old school inspired death metal, with synthesizer elements thrown in with the more melodic and heavier guitar parts. Laika, is not solely focused on playing fast and crazy, as their music contains tons of substance for starters, and their music is as unique as possible with synths used as a chilling backdrop to their progressive death metal.” – Explicitly Intense

“For an unsigned and independent band with only one other album under their belt, this really is a phenomenal release, and it really shines a light on how promising Laika’s future could be…the melodies and hooks they employ are the shining stars here.” – Metal Observer

Calgary, AB progressive power metal quartet VIATHYN are offering fans anotherFREE download ‘The Coachman’ off their upcoming album ‘Cynosure’ due out on October 7th. The download is available at the following link: http://viathyn.bandcamp.com/track/the-coachman

“The Coachman is a fun mid-tempo track to bang your head to and sing along with. The track was recorded on 7-string guitars and switches back and forth from distorted to clean throughout the song. The chanting chorus creates a mead-hall vibe, and the up-tempo midsection has four trade-off guitar solos (including one from our bass player Alex… on guitar!). The song has a bit of a tribute to Edvard Grieg in the outro and also features the first instance of guest growl vocals on the album by Sean Jenkins of Calgary-based tech-death band Divinity. We packed lots of stuff into the 5:41 running time for you guys!” comments guitarist Jacob Wright.

Produced by VIATHYN‘s Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered by Sacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills), ‘Cynosure’ features nine epic assaulting tracks with intense guitar shredding and infectious chants that blend prog thrash, melo-death and power metal influences. With VIATHYN‘s 2010 ‘The Peregrine Way’ debut album praised for its innovative song-writing and fresh comparison to today’s power metal, it was only a matter of time for guitarist Jacob Wright to launch into song-writing mode and compose a majority of the material that would be recorded for this second full-length. Even through hindrances such as studio closings, computer crashes, losing a jam space, and a flood, VIATHYN was able to record their second album between August 2012 and February 2014. With the addition of 7-string guitars, some growl vocals, and an evolving influence, Cynosure’s songs are faster, more technical, and heavier, while maintaining a constant melodic and progressive presence ready to be unleashed upon the world.

VIATHYN is also offering a Free Download of the first single released ‘Ageless Stranger’ at the following links:

As previously stated by guitarist Jacob Wright:

“We chose Ageless Stranger to be the opening track on our new album Cynosure because it is high energy and hard hitting. With a big chorus, relentless rhythms, and some fun shredding, we feel it is the appropriate introduction to the remaining hour of diverse musical moments you will hear on Cynosure. The lyrics are inspired by the malevolent Stephen King character Randall Flagg, who has appeared in multiple works by King such as The Stand, The Eyes of the Dragon, and The Dark Tower.”

About:

A chance encounter at a local record store in Calgary, Alberta between guitarist Jacob Wright, who was just looking for work, and vocalist Tomislav Crnkovic, who happened to be an employee of said shop, resulted in a friendship that gradually led to the creation of progressive power metal outfit Viathyn in 2006 with a solidified live and recording line up in 2009.

Playing off the word ‘Leviathan’, the guys settled on ‘Viathyn’, which has no actual definition in the English language, but when referring to the band can be taken to mean ‘progressive, melodic, grandiose, innovative and emotional’.

Forgoing the strict rules and structure common to the genre, the four-piece is known for its ability to write songs that grow and progress naturally and shift tone unapologetically without falling victim to common tropes. Building on their first full-length album, 2010’s The Peregrine Way, Viathyn is now gearing up to unveil its second record, Cynosure produced by vocalist/guitarist Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered by Sacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills).

“The literal definition of ‘cynosure’ is a focal point or an object that serves to guide,” explains Wright. “Each track focuses upon a character that is either affected by or acts as an agent of chaos and the message we wanted to express is how small and insignificant our actions and petty squabbles are within the grand scale of the universe. It’s kind of a backwards way of trying to show that we as humans should be humble and respectful to each other!”

Cynosure promises to be faster, more technical and heavier than its predecessor while maintaining a constant melodic and progressive presence – can you handle it?

– 30 –

“An exploration of disillusion, discord, affliction, enlightenment, and grandeur as seen through nine different storytellers, Viathyn live for a more European-oriented montage of neo-classical runs, twin guitar harmonies, double bass fury, and the occasional mid-tempo transition that can be highly folk or Celtic influenced…Cynosure is proof again that our neighbors to the north can rival the best European acts going in this faithful, happy sub-genre.” – Dead Rhetoric

“An atmospheric metal album with grand vocal work and guitar structure.” – Headbang or GFTO

“Viathyn will instantly appeal to fans of traditional and power metal but they are much more than that. The songs have great headbanging, fist-pumping tempos, but each track also has deeply emotional and thoughtful undercurrent which warrants many listens.” – KING – Pitch Black Magazine

“It isn’t often that a band will blow away the listener with their debut album, but Viathyn does just that!” – Peter – Metal Psalter – Metal Psalter

“It’s been a long time since I’ve heard anything quite so eclectic as this band’s epic melding of the power, folk, speed, and progressive metals. They’re more alchemists than musicians, forging a new mold out of which many may be poured but few will actually fit.” – JDeathscript – Metal Call Out

“This is “Prog” metal at its finest.” – Cuz’N Mike – Heavy Metal Review

“…Viathyn have delivered a really solid, classy and mature metal album, that is as good as anything coming out of Europe these days” – JP – Metal Rules

“….This band really has their shit together, the solos are spectacular here, the sweeps are to die for, everything is good here…” – Metals Dead

“The musicianship is literally as good as it gets. It doesn’t matter which band member you would change, but the level of musical virtuosity wouldn’t get any higher.” – Poohkali – Rateyourmusic
