With a name as unique and identifiable as their sound, Toronto, ON’s LAUGH AT THE FAKES is a band that challenges the trends of today’s rock and metal scene. Since the bands inception in 2010, LATF has combined elements of metal, hard rock, and prog to create an unmistakable sound. Debuting their six song EP ‘One Night Only’ in 2011, they return in 2014 with their latest offering ‘Dethrone The Crown’ their first full length produced by Greg Dawson and mastered by Andy VanDette (Rush, Dream Theatre, Kid Rock, Deep Purple, Bruce Dickenson, Bif Naked). With VIATHYN‘s 2010 ‘The Peregrine Way’ debut album praised for its innovative song-writing and fresh comparison to today’s power metal, it was only a matter of time for guitarist Jacob Wright to launch into song-writing mode and compose a majority of the material that would be recorded for this second full-length. Even through hindrances such as studio closings, computer crashes, losing a jam space, and a flood, VIATHYN was able to record their second album between August 2012 and February 2014. About:

A chance encounter at a local record store in Calgary, Alberta between guitarist Jacob Wright, who was just looking for work, and vocalist Tomislav Crnkovic, who happened to be an employee of said shop, resulted in a friendship that gradually led to the creation of progressive power metal outfit Viathyn in 2006 with a solidified live and recording line up in 2009.

Playing off the word ‘Leviathan’, the guys settled on ‘Viathyn’, which has no actual definition in the English language, but when referring to the band can be taken to mean ‘progressive, melodic, grandiose, innovative and emotional’.

Forgoing the strict rules and structure common to the genre, the four-piece is known for its ability to write songs that grow and progress naturally and shift tone unapologetically without falling victim to common tropes. Building on their first full-length album, 2010’s The Peregrine Way, Viathyn is now gearing up to unveil its second record, Cynosure produced by vocalist/guitarist Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered by Sacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills).

“The literal definition of ‘cynosure’ is a focal point or an object that serves to guide,” explains Wright. “Each track focuses upon a character that is either affected by or acts as an agent of chaos and the message we wanted to express is how small and insignificant our actions and petty squabbles are within the grand scale of the universe. It’s kind of a backwards way of trying to show that we as humans should be humble and respectful to each other!”

Cynosure promises to be faster, more technical and heavier than its predecessor while maintaining a constant melodic and progressive presence – can you handle it?

What started as two brothers and their best friend getting together for some freestyle jams and demo recordings in 2005 soon evolved into enough written material for two EPs and the birth of a new full-blown band, Blind Race, in 2007.

Drawing inspiration from their love of fast cars and the intrigue of driving them blind, as well as modern-day racial issues and the idea that we are all the same, the award nominated (Toronto Independent Music Awards: Best Live Metal Act Nomination (2012), Best Metal Act Nomination (2010)), Blind Race arrived at a name packed with meaning to match its melting pot sound.

Putting emphasis on musical identity and creativity, the then Toronto four-piece released Seeing Red in 2008, unleashed Lost in 2012 and grew to a five piece that is now ready to unveil its third EP, Come and Get It.

Going back to raw, air thrusting, 7-string powered tracks such as “Come and Get It” and “Hypocrite” to eastern influenced charismatic progressions in “Truth or Dare” and Latin derived contrasts of “Hopeless”, this EP is just the tip of the iceberg, which is the diverse style of Blind Race. All the music in this EP was written using a very simple philosophy by guitar player Costas Kentros. Just play what you feel. “With the initial riff of each song, the gates just opened and the music flowed out and created a statement for each song. From love to hate, to truth or dare, standing your ground and those times when you just want to kill the pain with a bottle of Jack. These songs cover our most common situations and emotions.” says Kentros.

Thanks to a group of high school friends fusing their influences into one cohesive sound and the flip of a coin to help choose between band names, Vancouver progressive metal band Quartered’s moniker has certainly given itself meaning over the years.

Inspired by bands like Deftones, Tool and Thrice from early on – Quartered’s focus has always been on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics that tell a story while keeping one major goal in mind: longevity.

Following multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines) and two full-length albums, The Falls of Autumn and Walks Like a Ghost, produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against), Quartered is ready to unleash its third record, Eyes and Ears, on October 7th that was produced by them and Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound.

Heavily influenced by “memories and how senses play a big part in connecting and helping us remember parts of our lives,” the title Eyes and Ears was chosen because “you can’t un-see the things you’ve witnessed and hearing is such a powerful way to trigger memories,” explains vocalist Greggor Williams.

“We chose Ageless Stranger to be the opening track on our new album Cynosure because it is high energy and hard hitting. With a big chorus, relentless rhythms, and some fun shredding, we feel it is the appropriate introduction to the remaining hour of diverse musical moments you will hear on Cynosure. The lyrics are inspired by the malevolent Stephen King character Randall Flagg, who has appeared in multiple works by King such as The Stand, The Eyes of the Dragon, and The Dark Tower.”

Produced by VIATHYN‘s Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered bySacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills), ‘Cynosure’ features nine epic assaulting tracks with intense guitar shredding and infectious chants that blend prog thrash, melo-death and power metal influences. With VIATHYN‘s 2010 ‘The Peregrine Way’ debut album praised for its innovative song-writing and fresh comparison to today’s power metal, it was only a matter of time for guitarist Jacob Wright to launch into song-writing mode and compose a majority of the material that would be recorded for this second full-length. Even through hindrances such as studio closings, computer crashes, losing a jam space, and a flood, VIATHYN was able to record their second album between August 2012 and February 2014. Viathyn was formed in 2006 in Calgary, Alberta when brothers Tomislav and Dave Crnkovic (on guitar and drums respectively) joined forces with lead guitarist Jacob Wright. Having come from various influences such as Thrash, Melo-Death, and Power metal, they wrote a handful of early demo tracks to settle on an overall sound for the group. In 2008, they recorded the Demagogue EP in order to attract a permanent vocalist and bassist. Alex Kot joined on bass in 2009, and brought with him a unique playing style by using an 8-string NS stick. Tomislav took up vocal duties, and the line-up was complete. VIATHYN started playing live shows and has supported bands such as Stratovarius, Manegarm, Incantation, Rotten Sound, Into Eternity, and Skeletonwitch.

Quick Fact on band name: Playing off the word ‘Leviathan’, the guys settled on ‘Viathyn’, which has no actual definition in the English language, but when referring to the band can be taken to mean ‘progressive, melodic, grandiose, innovative and emotional’.

Display of Decay, the Edmonton, AB death metal trio turned four piece with the recent addition of guitarist Jeremy Puffer have unleashed their new EP ‘Outbreak of Infection’, out today, August 26th. Their fourth EP since forming in 2007 features five groovy death metal tracks with gore filled lyrics that includes a black metal cover of KISS‘ ‘Black Diamond.’

In 2007, Edmonton, AB underwent one of the most notable natural disasters in history. An earthquake split the city in two, and chaos ran amok through the streets.

Alas…such things are bound to happen when DISPLAY OF DECAY takes the stage. Handcrafted by Hell’s most elite demons, DISPLAY OF DECAY is noted for bringing a unique blend of old school death metal, blended with tinges of thrash and doom metal. The band has spread their infection across Western Canada over the years, sharing the stage alongside other local elite acts such as, Disciples of Power and Into Eternity.

After unleashing three well received indie releases, DISPLAY OF DECAY is currently gearing up for their next follow up “Outbreak of Infection”, an EP featuring five brutal tracks that includes an annihilating rendition of KISS’ ‘Black Diamond’. Set to riot mosh pits officially August 26, 2014, DISPLAY OF DECAY is eagerly preparing to tour Western Canada in 2014 to promote their best work to date.
