North Carolina, USA’s, Southern Metal duo Hellfire 76 has just dropped their rippin’ new video for single “Rags to Rage” the title track from their upcoming first full-length, which hits speakers on November 29th. The song showcases the band’s signature combination of fuzzed-out grooves and occult-themed storytelling, drawing from founding member Von Bury’s New Orleans roots. The band comments on the single:

“Musically, it’s fast and aggressive; lyrically, it’s pretty much an “action/reaction” lyric- each to its own interpretation. Simply put, we wanted a song that kicked down the door right from the start. It’s full of fast grooves with rapid-fire lyrics.”

The two-piece outfit, featuring Von Bury (guitar/bass/organ/vocals) (formerly of the Southern Gothic act LOVESUCKER and the Occult Rock act and Napalm Recording artist BLOODY HAMMERS) and Mike McGuiness (drums) (formerly of the Industrial Metal act FACE THE WORLD), delivers a massive wall of sound that belies their minimal lineup. Recorded in a single take, “Rags to Rage” demonstrates the raw power and precision that has earned Hellfire 76 recognition as one of the heaviest two-piece acts in the local scene.

Canadian proggers The Wring released their much-anticipated fourth studio album “Nemesis” this past September. This album marks a significant step in the band’s journey, showcasing a more cohesive and refined sound that blends their heavy rock roots with progressive and jazz influences. With eight tracks spanning just over 40 minutes, “Nemesis” adds a new, technical twist to progressive metal.

Today, Guitarist Don Dewulf shares his latest video for the instrumental track “Blur” via its premiere on V13.net HERE.

“Frank Zappa once said: “lyrics (in his songs) wouldn’t exist at all if it weren’t for the fact that we live in a society where instrumental music is irrelevant”. As someone who appreciates all forms of very progressive music, but also values Frank’s sentiments, if I am going to create an instrumental, it had better be short and interesting. For me, YYZ is the gold standard with La Villa being a stretched-out older cousin. I like to think Blur checks a few of those boxes and that people will enjoy what it has to say.” adds Dewulf.

The Wring‘s new album “Nemesis” explores themes of external and internal conflict, with each song representing a different facet of our struggles. From the driving intensity of tracks like “Badlands” and “The Sword” to the melodic intricacy of “The Nail” and “Before I Disappear”, the album is a dynamic journey through the band’s musical and lyrical vision. Reggie Hache’s expanded role on vocals, bass, and keyboards brings a new depth to The Wring’s sound, while Dewulf’s guitar work continues to anchor the band’s heavy yet nuanced approach.

Throughout “Nemesis,” the playing is tight, precise, and yet still free-flowing. Each instrument complements the others and often provides a steady hand while the other players move in different directions.

Guitarist Don Dewulf comments:

“Thematically, Nemesis speaks to conflict of all sorts. Musically, there is a similar conflict of musical styles. The central idea of every Wring album is to combine many genres in a single song, so while nothing is new, hopefully, the combination can seem fresh or different. For many listeners, even the most dedicated, certain musical stylings are an onerous listen – jazz, prog, even classical. The idea of Nemesis is to give the listener a way to enjoy odd times, peculiar harmony, and aggressive riffs without having to give up their soul to do it. The backbone of every song is firmly rooted in traditional hard rock so there is always something to grab onto.”

Emerging metal act Heteromorphic Zoo, from Victoria, BC, Canada, is set to captivate audiences with their debut EP “New World”, produced by Chris Wiseman (Shadow of Intent, Currents) plus mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy). Coinciding with the EP launch, the band has unveiled the music video for their single “Ritual of Fidelity”, which they comment on:

“This song is about an ancient power awakening within a great tomb, filled with monsters. The leaders declare their loyalty (or fidelity) to the overlord. Musically, the actual “ritual of fidelity” takes place in the middle of the song. It’s a classical 3-voice fugue between the violin, lead guitar, and rhythm guitars + bass with a subject, tonal response, 2 counter subjects, and everything. Of course, it’s not a pure fugue since other instruments are also playing, but that’s the skeleton of it, and the callback to an old baroque form brings out the ritualistic nature of the song.”

“Ritual of Fidelity” has a memorable lead guitar melody during its chorus, chuggy yet melodic verse riffs, and an overall more neoclassical sound. The violin is fairly subdued and in the background until the moment of the ritual fugue, since that moment is meant to introduce it to the listener for the first time.

Born from a desire to create “Worship Music for Monsters”, Heteromorphic Zoo‘s five-track EP showcases a diverse and extreme sound that pushes the boundaries of modern metal. Lyrically, “New World” tells the story of a grand alliance of monstrous beings invading a new realm, with perspectives shifting between the monsters, their overlord, and their enemies. The band’s innovative approach combines groove and melody, intricate riffs, and powerful breakdowns, resulting in a sonic experience that defies easy categorization. They are recommended for fans of In Flames, Within the Ruins, and Ne Obliviscaris.

“I am pleased to finally unleash this labor of love. I started this project in 2022 and manically wrote two albums, fixated on creating paranoid yet beautiful progressive rock to express my enjoyment of dystopian science fiction that sees humanity losing its very essence to machines. The initial point musically was to have Adrian Belew join Voivod in my bizarro musical mind. Melodic death metal project Ophidian Memory, the brainchild of Blake Lamoureux, is set to release its latest album “Carrion Lord” on September 27th, 2024. Ophidian Memory, hailing from Des Moines, USA, is known for its innovative approach to metal, using melodic death metal as a foundation to incorporate elements of black metal, thrash, progressive metal, and metalcore. “Carrion Lord” continues this tradition, offering a heavier and more unrelenting sound compared to its predecessor “Our Shattered Garden”. Lamoureux comments:

“Carrion Lord is the most ambitious and brutal Ophidian Memory release to date. The lyrics portray themes of deception, sacrifice, undreamt horror, and war. Musically the death and black metal notches have been turned all the way up, while the progressive notch has been turned down greatly until late in the album, giving a reprieve to the listener for a slight moment until the record ultimately closes with a ripping epic finishing track.”

The album is best experienced as a front-to-back listening journey, with each track offering a unique blend of subgenres that keeps the listener engaged throughout. Lyrically, “Carrion Lord” delves deeper into the fictional universe of “Existence”, a dark fantasy epic created by Lamoureux that has become the cornerstone of Ophidian Memory‘s conceptual approach.

On this album, Ophidian Memory has moved away from the progressive metal feel, choosing to take on a darker and heavier tone which reflects the brutal narrative this time around. Expect lots of unhinged vocals, riffs for days, and oppressive drums. Vancouver, Canada’s Thirteen Goats are proud to release their second album—the extreme metal rock opera “Capricorn Rising”. It tells the story of their mascot, Shepherd: a goat-skull-wearing Antichrist who raises an army of animals to liberate the earth from humanity’s constant wars and greed. This high-concept narrative is delivered with Thirteen Goats‘ signature blend of infernal riffs, huge hooks, and uniquely theatrical songwriting. They comment on the album:

“We think fans are going to get everything they loved about our first record, only more of it—and more focused. We’re exploring similar themes on this release, but we’ve connected them by weaving a cohesive story throughout these nine tracks that gives more context to the different musical and tonal shifts. Each song on the album is part of a broader narrative that explores themes of disillusionment, radicalization, and rebellion as Shepherd and his 12 demon goats wage their crusade. The artwork for “Broke and Ugly” was done by the band’s primary artist and good friend, Tim Murray. It depicts a dive-bar nightmare bathroom that has been – to put it diplomatically – well-loved. It has a few little Easter eggs from other songs from the band peppered through it, and a green hand grabbing for some shit tickets from a busted-ass urinal that belongs to the velociraptor featured in the album art from their first record, “Fast As Fvck”.”

“Barbarian is one of my favorite songs I have written so far. The guitar work is thrashy but also has a neo-classical element to it. I love the mid-tempo churning bass drums that is no secret at this point. Lyrically the song is about my personal feelings on how I want to live my life, but also an observation of what is going on in the world right now. I am sure I am not the only one who sees we are living in an oligarchic society. Meaning we are in a society where only a chosen few have most of the political power. This has always disgusted me. I never needed a political leader or organized religion to tell me how to act, what to read or listen to, and who to vote for. I think it is all complete self-serving bullshit and I refuse to have any part in it. I am barbaric. I follow no rules but my own. I refuse to participate in a society that is untrustworthy, narcissistic, and completely selfish. So I choose a more nomadic life as far away as possible from all of the madness.
