Recognizing the achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC Music Awards is proud to announce their inaugural year in supporting and celebrating the wide range of musical talent based in the city. Honouring artists in 19 categories (list below), the YYC Music Awards is taking submissions until April 16th for this year’s first annual gala being held on September 25th at a venue later to be announced.

The YYC Music Awards are founded by music industry veterans Darren Gilbert (producer, Off The T-Can Studio), Shannon Ambrose (The Portal Magazine), Larry Mayell (artist manager) & Leanne Harrison (SIN Agency) to celebrate the artists that embrace Calgary at home, entertaining and supporting its arts and culture.

About:

Wacken Metal Battle Canada is part of an international competition where band’s from across the country in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City will battle each other for one to be selected and join over 30 other countries for an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air, which has been taking place in Wacken , Germany for the last 25 years. Toronto’s Crimson Shadows (2013 winners – video at Wacken) and Montreal’s Mutank (2014 winners – video at Wacken) have had that honour playing in front of thousands. This year’s festival will be taking place from July 30th to August 1st.

How it works:

Each city will hold their qualifying rounds plus city finals from the months of January to May 2015 selecting the top band to move forward to the national finals in Toronto, ON in June (date to be determined) with one being selected to perform at the 26th edition of Wacken Open Air taking place from July 30th to August 1st. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry.

The finalists will be selected as follows.

1 finalist from BC (Vancouver & Victoria will face off)

1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off)

2 finalists from Toronto, ON

1 finalist from Quebec (Montreal & Quebec City will face off)

1 finalist from Ottawa, ON

1 finalist from Saskatoon or Winnipeg (Saskatoon and Winnipeg will face off)

“Laugh At The Fakes” features Everett Mason (Vocals and Guitar), Galen Weir (bass), Kevin Daliri (guitar) and Chris Avalos (drums).

Their debut six-song EP ‘One Night Only’ was released in 2011 and their 2014 follow-up full-length album, Dethrone the Crown, is scheduled to drop this fall on November 14th. After a busy summer releasing their debut full length “721835”on August 1, 2014 plus touring the USA, the United Kingdom (tour recap on PureGrainAudio.com here) and an upcoming opening slot for He His Legend in Kingston, ON November 17th. Ottawa, ON neo-rock nerdsDouble Experience will be touring intimate Ontario venues for their “Night of the Living Room” Tour, which will feature the band literally redecorating and furnishing the venues and stages with comforts from home, including their collection of video games with a TV; perfect for challenging fans to win some prizes in-between sets.

“It was great to finally be home after all the travelling we did, but every musician out there can relate to that constant need to tour,” says Brock Tinsley, guitarist. “We figured there had to be some way to combine the comforts of both.”

Double Experience has also began work on their still-untitled follow up, and will be entering the studio after Christmas.

Over the last few years, the Ottawa, ON based rock nerds have toured across Canada six times, twice in the UK and the States, performing 500+ shows over 100,000 miles and sharing the stage with such acts as Silverstein, Hawthorne Heights, Every Time I Die, Dead and Divine, Lifestory:Monologue to name a few. Their new album ‘721835’ is a curious collection of songs that are inspired by everything the band loves and considers nerdy. Ekaterina Pvatlova brings another dimension to the band too; her vocals are nothing you’ve heard in metal before, and I love the touch she brings with the woodwind instruments…I love the track “Get Me A Beer” – it could be marketed as a cure for depression. Elsewhere, the contrast between folk and metal works very harmoniously: heavy and uplifting at the same time. Joyous stuff! The band also have a good sense of humour, and while they can be serious, this is an enjoyable life-affirming album to listen to, which is as it should be. Our lives are brief; we should try and enjoy our spell on this earth! I love the album artwork and presentation too. This is a band the world needs to hear more of. Highly recommended! – Hellbound

What started as two brothers and their best friend getting together for some freestyle jams and demo recordings in 2005 soon evolved into enough written material for two EPs and the birth of a new full-blown band, Blind Race, in 2007.

Drawing inspiration from their love of fast cars and the intrigue of driving them blind, as well as modern-day racial issues and the idea that we are all the same, the award nominated (Toronto Independent Music Awards: Best Live Metal Act Nomination (2012), Best Metal Act Nomination (2010)), Blind Race arrived at a name packed with meaning to match its melting pot sound.

Putting emphasis on musical identity and creativity, the then Toronto four-piece released Seeing Red in 2008, unleashed Lost in 2012 and grew to a five piece that is now ready to unveil its third EP, Come and Get It.

Going back to raw, air thrusting, 7-string powered tracks such as “Come and Get It” and “Hypocrite” to eastern influenced charismatic progressions in “Truth or Dare” and Latin derived contrasts of “Hopeless”, this EP is just the tip of the iceberg, which is the diverse style of Blind Race. Vancouver, BC prog metallers QUARTERED whom are hitting the road in October with Nanaimo, BC’s The Body Politic for tour dates in Alberta and British Columbia (dates listed below) are proud to officially release their new album ‘Eyes And Ears’, out today, October 7th. Co-produced with Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound, Quartered has marked their return to the spotlight to follow up 2010’s ‘Walk Like A Ghost’ that was produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against) and took the band on multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines). Focusing on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics, the band has kept one major goal in mind: longevity. Now the band is ready to unleash their third record, ‘Eyes and Ears’.

About:

Thanks to a group of high school friends fusing their influences into one cohesive sound and the flip of a coin to help choose between band names, Vancouver progressive metal band Quartered’s moniker has certainly given itself meaning over the years.

Inspired by bands like Deftones, Tool and Thrice from early on – Quartered’s focus has always been on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics that tell a story while keeping one major goal in mind: longevity.

Following multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines) and two full-length albums, The Falls of Autumn and Walks Like a Ghost, produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against), Quartered is ready to unleash its third record, Eyes and Ears, on October 7th that was produced by them and Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound.

Heavily influenced by “memories and how senses play a big part in connecting and helping us remember parts of our lives,” the title Eyes and Ears was chosen because “you can’t un-see the things you’ve witnessed and hearing is such a powerful way to trigger memories,” explains vocalist Greggor Williams.
