Vancouver’s heavy melodic mixture of post-hardcore sludge Dyatlove released their debut self-titled EP this past May. The EP was recorded at Rain City Recorders with Matt Roach over the course of a few days (watch Make of… Video here). This is an EP that requires attention to take in, with each song taking the listener on a ride with its complex lyrical content.

Today, the band announces the debut EP will be available on cassette version on August 31st from Coup Sur Coup Records along with featuring the exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

The cassette version is available for pre-order at the following link: https://coupsurcoup.bandcamp.com/album/s-t

Dyatlove guitarist Rikki Jennings–Buford comments:

“We are all super excited to have the cassette release with Coup Sur Coup. Max has supported us from day one and it’s a great working relationship. Even more so we are pumped for everyone to get to hear the bonus track ‘DIE! KILL! PIG!’ It’s a song we are proud of and we are ready for it to be out in the world. Be ready for some more treats after the official release date!”

Coup Sur Coup Records’ Max Cayer adds:

“Vancouver’s Dyatlove brings the perfect balance between sludge and shoegaze. Somewhere between Cult of Luna/Khoma & Hum. It’s a proven fact that the Pacific Northwest always was a hotbed for heavy music, lots of rainy days enable groups to lock up in rehearsal spaces and hack out heavy, intense music. Dyatlove is a testament to that. They’ve put their own twist on the genre, hints of post-hardcore, Emo, and atmospheric heaviness. I’m super proud to be involved in making this release happen, they are right at home with Coup Sur Coup…” I think it’s a testament to the quality of the music to say that after dubbing the tapes, I still want to listen to the album.”

For fans of Converge, Deafheaven, Thrice, and Explosions In The Sky, Dyatlove‘s debut EP is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp HERE.

About:

Dyatlove is a passionate foray into the realm of morose singer-songwriter overtones set alongside heavy music. Longtime friends Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) and Rikki Jennings-Buford (guitar) bonded over bands such as Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, and Pinback.

This array of influences drives the diversity of Vancouver, Canada’s Dyatlove, who don’t feel the need to pigeon hole into a particular genre. From sad songs to crushing sludge metal to 2-minute hardcore songs, Dyatlove conveys emotion and brings the heavy with drop A tuning.

Starting individually, the band works on riffs and ideas, eventually bringing them together to be fleshed out further. As full believers of limitless creativity, they don’t tie themselves to classic song structures. The lyrics come from many places, some are stories, some are personal experiences. There are songs about love of family, songs about loss, songs about anger and songs about struggles and addictions. Although varied in the subject matter they all have one thing in common, feeling.

Performing with the same intense passion and emotion that they bring to the jam space, Dyatlove intends to really connect to their fans, and show what their songs mean to them. With Rob Sheldrick (drums) and Justin Lacey (bass), the quartet delivers with an infectious openness and energy. Their self-titled, debut EP is being released on May 29, 2020 with the cassette version being released by Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

0 Okanagan Proggers LAKEMAN Share Visually Atmospheric Live Video “Pandosy”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – July 13, 2020

For fans of Russian Circles, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, And So I Watch You from Afar

Okanagan Proggers LAKEMAN Share Visually Atmospheric Live Video “Pandosy”

New EP “Progenitor” Out Now!

Visual instrumental prog band Lakeman split up earlier this year, but before they say goodbye to the age of their EP “Progenitor” released this past January, the band is sharing with fans their live video “Pandosy”, which captures footage of the band’s final night of rehearsal and last three sold-out shows in Kelowna and Penticton during November 2019.

Lakeman‘s Robert McLaren explains further:

“We worked really hard to try to get every song we wrote filmed in order to highlight the fact we were exchanging instruments and using more than the standard rock band set up.

We tried to film/record “Pandosy” on multiple occasions and it would never work out for whatever reason: technical difficulties, poor quality recording, bad performances.

When we decided to stop playing live for an indeterminate amount of time, possibly for good, we knew our final shows would be our last chance to film “Pandosy”. All week at rehearsals and even the first show of the weekend we were shaky, I remember my fiddle was out of tune the first night.

“Pandosy” is always our big ender of the night. So we played it for what might be the last time and we captured this beast of a song on film and record.

It was a fitting end if that was the end. At that time we weren’t sure.”

To watch this epic visually atmospheric live video for “Pandosy”, please visit the following platforms:

“Progenitor” was the second audio-visual release from LAKEMAN. Most of the EP was recorded live off the floor by Kaylub Burke at the Center for Arts and Technology with mixing and mastering by Andy Ashley. Visual elements for the EP were filmed and edited by Jonathan Robinson, and lighting was operated by Joshua Goodwin.

Lakeman‘s Robert McLaren explains the release:

“We all seem drawn to lo-fi expression for this project. I personally love to capture moments rather than reproduce them. 90% of “Progenitor” was live off the floor, recorded as a band playing together in a room. I would not suggest this for most bands, it is a waiting game to find the take that everyone played their best and usually, time is not a luxury when you are in a studio. However, you have to learn to love your blemishes and flaws as a band when you record this way. It is a form of radical self-acceptance.”

“Progenitor” is available for stream and download via Bandcamp.
CD and vinyl versions that feature individual one of a kind acrylic pour artwork are sold out.

Music Video – “Powers Creek” here.
Music Video – “25,000 + Hectares” here.

LAKEMAN had a devoted cult-like following throughout the Okanagan Valley and British Columbia. The band’s long-form instrumental and genre-bending approach beckoned audiences of various musical forms. They reveled in the band’s ability to exchange instruments everything from drums to guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesizers, and even the fiddle and banjo. All this happened on stage while the music continued seamlessly through ambient soundscapes.

The overall theme of the band was a sonic meditation of the veiled and macabre history of the Okanagan valley. The group found their sound in a deeply collaborative approach, very little of the composition was done apart, and there was no “songwriter”. The band started the compositions by first improvising together, the feel of each improvisation being vastly different based on who was playing which instrument. As mentioned earlier the band did not have assigned instrument roles as most other bands traditionally do. You could find any one of the members doing anything from turning knobs on a synthesizer to singing into a violin before they started bowing it. After finding the improvisation the band liked, they would then begin the long process of composing around this initial improvisation. Once a LAKEMAN piece of music started to take form, the band would start considering a local myth or legend to devote the theme to, this deepened the band’s thematic composition. This was when the piece would usually take its final or close to its final form.

Track Listing:
1. Powers Creek (8:08)
2. 25,000 + Hectares (7:12)
3. Pandosy (10:38)
EP Length: 25:59

Band Line Up:
Josh Bissonette: guitar, bass, keys/synth, drums
Josh Pym: guitar, bass, keys/synth, vocals
Warryn Berry: guitar, keys/synth, drums
Robert McLaren: guitar, bass, keys/synths, drums, vocals, fiddle, banjo

“Experimenting with unique atmospherics, delving deep into concepts that feature tidbits of Okanagan history and relying heavily on intuition, LAKEMAN goes beyond catchy riffs and infectious hooks to create living and breathing art that resonates.” – Kelowna Now

Vancouver’s DYATLOVE Premiere Single ‘Empty Lungs’ via GhostCultMag

Debut Self-Titled EP Out May 29th; Pre-Order Available

New Music Video ‘Fragile Fixation’

Vancouver’s Dyatlove are sharing the next single ‘Empty Lungs’ off their forthcoming debut self-titled EP due out May 29th. The track was the first song vocalist/guitarist Sam Caviglia and guitarist Rikki Jennings-Buford wrote together and what they felt the band was going to sound like moving forward.

Today, Dyatlove is teaming up with GhostCultMag for the track’s premiere HERE.

“I feel like it is classically the heaviest song on the EP with the the least amount of lyrics. At the time we really wanted the drone and doom to be the appealing factor and initially thought of having no lyrics on it at all. As we starting jamming it more we realized we are going to be a band with vocals and we should embrace Sam’s talents rather than dismiss them just because.” adds Rikki Jennings-Buford.

Recorded at Rain City Recorders with Matt Roach over the course of a few days, Dyatlove‘s sound is eclectic and diverse, at times morose and at other, heavy sludge. An EP that requires attention to take in, each song takes the listener on a ride with complex lyrical content aiming to grab attention. Guitarist Rikki Jennings-Buford shares his thoughts on the EP:

“I think this EP will be appreciated by more than just fans of heavy music. As musicians, we write the music that we want to hear and we aren’t fans of just metal. There is something for everyone who digs guitar-based music on this EP. We hope these 4 songs give you a good representation of our inspirations and where we could go musically.”

Lyrically it is about the pull of depression and not knowing how to get out of it and how it can take over your entire frame of thinking. Understanding you are hurting people but not knowing how to get out of it.

For fans of Converge, Deafheaven, Thrice, and Explosions In The Sky, Dyatlove‘s debut EP is available for pre-order HERE. The band will also be offering up a cassette version available from Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

DYATLOVE Launch Pre-Order For Debut Self-Titled EP Out May 29th

New Music Video ‘Fragile Fixation’

Vancouver’s Dyatlove have launched the pre-order for their self-titled debut EP due out May 29th. Along with the digital release of the EP, the band will be issuing a cassette version from Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

There is something for everyone who digs guitar-based music on this EP. We hope these 4 songs give you a good representation of our inspirations and where we could go musically.”

In addition to the EP’s pre-order, the band has released their music video for the single ‘Fragile Fixation’.

The single is the result of Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) returning from a getaway with the idea for the song. It evolved into a track that is one of their more classically structured songs, but they felt it would be a song that most people would gravitate to right away.

Lyrically it is about the pull of depression and not knowing how to get out of it and how it can take over your entire frame of thinking. Understanding you are hurting people but not knowing how to get out of it.

Kill! Pig!’.

“they’ve got one behemoth set of four savage cuts on this record that warrant a major repeating, and a lineup of tunes that command & demand your full attention.  This whole experience met every hope & expectation I could have had, then smashed & surpassed them all – Dyatlove’s EP didn’t let me down for a solitary second – you need this record on your playlists this year.” – Sleeping Bag Studios

Montreal, QC – April 10, 2020

For fans of Deafheaven, Converge, Russian Circles, Touche Amore, Alcest, Pallbearer

DYATLOVE Premiere Video ‘Fragile Fixation’ via TheSludgelord; Debut Self-Titled EP Out May 29th

Vancouver, Canada’s Dyatlove are gearing up to release their self-titled debut EP this year and ahead of that are revealing their single ‘Fragile Fixation’ digitally with an exclusive premiere of its music video via The Sludgelord HERE.

Their sound is eclectic and diverse, at times morose and at other, heavy sludge.

The single is the result of Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) returning from a getaway with the idea for the song. It evolved into a track that is one of their more classically structured songs but they felt it would be a song that most people would gravitate to right away. Lyrically it is about the pull of depression and not knowing how to get out of it and how it can take over your entire frame of thinking. Understanding you are hurting people but not knowing how to get out of it.

The other tracks on the EP show the growth and diversity behind Dyatlove, who intend to release more music in short order. The EP was recorded at Rain City Recorders with Matt Roach over the course of a few days.

For fans of Spotlights, Hum, Thrice and Explosions In The Sky, the self-titled release arrives on May 29th, 2020 along with a cassette version being available from Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

Atmospheric Visual Prog LAKEMAN Share Video “25,000 + Hectares”

New EP “Progenitor” Out Now!

Visual instrumental prog band LAKEMAN is sharing with fans their music video ‘25,000 + Hectares‘ in support of their EP “Progenitor” released this past November.

The track is the shortest LM song ever recorded clocking in at a little over 7 minutes. The song is a sonic meditation inspired by the forest wildfires that sweep through the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada on an annual basis.

The band adds about the track:

“The Ponderosa pine in the area relies on fire to open its cone husks to spread its seeds. Destruction breeds creation. The song’s birth was quick yet meaningful. It had a feeling of something writing itself or being channeled by an unknown source. The song balances two simple chords breathing back and forth through different forms of intensities. Josh Pym screams falsetto’s through the pickups in his guitar while Josh Bissonette weaves a harsh bellowing electronic ambiance over top of the pulsing rhythm section.”

The video tale can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/Ac9demx48BY

“Progenitor” is the second audio-visual release from LAKEMAN. Most of the EP was recorded live off the floor by Kaylub Burke at the Center for Arts and Technology with mixing and mastering by Andy Ashley. Visual elements for the EP were filmed and edited by Jonathan Robinson, and lighting was operated by Joshua Goodwin.

Robert McLaren explains further:

“We all seem drawn to lo-fi expression for this project. I personally love to capture moments rather than reproduce them. 90% of “Progenitor” is live off the floor, recorded as a band playing together in a room. I would not suggest this for most bands, it is a waiting game to find the take that everyone played their best and usually, time is not a luxury when you are in a studio. However, you have to learn to love your blemishes and flaws as a band when you record this way. It is a form of radical self-acceptance. I like to also add that we have 20 more minutes of recorded music in production to release after “Progenitor”.

“Progenitor” is available for stream and download via Bandcamp.
CD and vinyl versions that feature individual one of a kind acrylic pour artwork are sold out.

Music Video – Powers Creek – here.

LAKEMAN has a devoted cult-like following throughout the Okanagan Valley and British Columbia. The band’s long-form instrumental and genre-bending approach beckons audiences of various musical forms. They revel in the band’s ability to exchange instruments everything from drums to guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesizers and lately even the fiddle and banjo. All this happens on stage while the music continues seamlessly through ambient soundscapes.

The overall theme of the band is a sonic meditation of the veiled and macabre history of the Okanagan valley. The group finds their sound in a deeply collaborative approach, very little composition is done apart, and there is no “songwriter”. The band starts the compositions by first improvising together, the feel of each improvisation can be vastly different based on who is playing which instrument. As mentioned earlier the band does not have assigned instrument roles as most other bands traditionally do. You can find anyone of the members doing anything from turning knobs on a synthesizer to singing into a violin before they started bowing it. After finding the improvisation the band likes, they then begin the long process of composing around this initial improvisation. Once a LAKEMAN piece of music starts to take form the band will start considering a local myth or legend to devote the theme to, this deepens the band’s thematic composition. This is when the piece will usually take its final or close to its final form.

Track Listing:
1. Powers Creek (8:08)
2. 25,000 + Hectares (7:12)
3. Pandosy (10:38)
EP Length: 25:59

Band Line Up:
Josh Bissonette: guitar, bass, keys/synth, drums
Josh Pym: guitar, bass, keys/synth, vocals
Warryn Berry: guitar, keys/synth, drums
Robert McLaren: guitar, bass, keys/synths, drums, vocals, fiddle, banjo

New EP “Progenitor” Out Now!

Visual instrumental prog band LAKEMAN is sharing with fans their music video ‘Power Creeks’ in support of their EP “Progenitor” released this past November.

The track is based on a local myth from the Okanagan Valley where the band is based in British Columbia. As the story goes, an apparition of a middle-aged man who seems to be searching for something or someone has been seen throughout the Powers Creek area. Rumours have circulated that it is the ghost of a local man who died in the area searching for his still-missing daughter. Others believe this is the ghost of William Russell Spears, a fugitive who gunned down an RCMP officer and then hid in the area during a manhunt during 1965. William Russel Spears turned the gun on himself before he was apprehended by authorities.

The cinematic tale can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/jxOKRGtdT94

0 NEWS: Out Now! Montreal Two Bass Band THE GREAT RUSSIAN EMPIRE Debut EP “Low Ends”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – September 8, 2017

For fans of Faith No More, Interpol, Joy Division, Russian Circles, Cop Shoot Cop

Out Now! Montreal Two Bass Band THE GREAT RUSSIAN EMPIRE Debut EP “Low Ends”

Born from of a desire to create music in an environment where guitars don’t exist. Bassists Benoît Forté (The Lonely Sidewalkers/Coco Méliès/ex-Fallstaf/ex-North East Bistro) and Nicolas Miquelon (Norilsk/Mortör/ex-Kintra) created the dark collective known as THE GREAT RUSSIAN EMPIRE (TGRE). Inspired by the 1980’s new wave and early 1990’s alternative genre, by way of modern folk and various rock influences, their debut EP “Low Ends” is dark in content with lyrics crafted around tragic personal events, and layered with vocals, violin and cello.

Now available as of September 8th, the EP is now streaming in full and can be downloaded or be purchased on CD version presented in a gatefold digi-sleeve at the following link on Bandcamp: https://thegreatrussianempire.bandcamp.com/album/low-ends.

Bassist Ben Forté comments:

“LOW ENDS wasn’t originally supposed to be recorded, well not for our first release. We (Ben Forte and Nic Miquelon) had worked on 6-7 instrumental songs that were supposed to see the day of light on this recording. Let say we were done about 75% and there was still a lot of work to be done and we didn’t feel that we were ready to lay everything down in studio. So… I (Ben Forte) had these other songs almost all done, with lyrics and a good vision of the arrangements. I felt going instrumental right after my other past projects FALLSTAF and NORTH EAST BISTRO would leave me hanging with things not said. So I asked my friend Jason from DIRTCAKE if he could sing on the recordings and he agreed the second I asked and he did an amazing job. I also felt the tracks were a little empty with a few basses and a drum kit so I added strings to support the songs and brought in a cello and a violin. David Méliès recorded almost everything and produced the whole project. Took almost 5 five years to complete this EP and looking back, these first songs we wrote are great because of the literal Low Ends.”

Track Listing:
1. Full of Blood (6:19)
2. The Hands That Bring The Road Kill To The Side (3:49)
3. If Tomorrow Ever Comes (Cop Shoot Cop cover) (6:03)
4. Blood Everywhere (3:52)
5. Pig’s Blood (3:56)
6. The Fence (4:15)
EP Length: 28:19

EP Band and Live Line UP:
Benoît Forté – Bass
Nicolas Miquelon – Bass
Mathieu Lassonde – Drums

Additional guest musicians:
Jason Mateus – Vocals
Sara Jasmin – Violon
Julien Thibault – Cello

“Speaking about unusual music, here is The Great Russian Empire and their astounding debut EP….Although they are genre-bending, constantly jumping from one style to another, the dark rock foundation always stands. Type O Negative meets Nick Cave meets Ween meets Joy Division, something like. Something pretty damn contagious too, I can guarantee you that.” – Merchants of Air

“Who needs a guitar!? A haunting & emotive listen, the EP is more than just dark & throbbing bass. It’s layered with gorgeous vocals & symphonic string instruments, sharing much with the 90’s alternative style of rock (Type O Negative, Faith No More). The Great Russian Empire have managed to craft an exciting & unique piece of work that is far more than just a bunch of throwaway songs.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“TGRE has their own distinct sound, which 9 of 10 bands fail to discover or create. This band not only makes the double bass attack work, but makes it their own. Well done.” – Gears of Rock

“Canadian rockers THE GREAT RUSSIAN EMPIRE have eschewed the guitar option and gone for two basses instead. It really shouldn’t work but in a bass loving bass clandestine amalgamation it does, and some – By Guy Shankland. The surprise is just how damn good and dark it sounds. ‘The Low Ends’ E.P oozes pure black current concentre head tilting Rock ‘N’ Dark.” – Original Rock

“Now, to be honest with you, I can’t quite get my head around this band! … How is it they can do what they do AND make it work – with impact! … And so superbly as well!” – Way Out Radio
