A sizzling cauldron of scatter-brained prog-metal insanity helmed by guitarist/vocalist Eric Thorfinnson, Toronto’s Autocatalytica unleashed their latest album “Powerclashing Maximalism” this past October. The LP is the band’s third and it explores all corners of Autocatalytica’s sound in a tight 36-minute runtime over eight tracks. A more mature listen, the full length continues the expressive outlet for Thorfinnson’s abstract angst and penchant for everything over the top. Thorfinnson has always drawn inspiration from a vast collage of different artists resulting in a sound that is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions. For fans of Devin Townsend, Meshuggah, and Protest The Hero, Autocatalytica‘s new album “Powerclashing Maximalism” is one for creative loving prog fans.

Today, drummer Neilroy Miranda shares his playthrough for the track “Cheggo”, a jazzy take on Math rock with its fair share of freneticism.

The video can be viewed via its premiere on TechnicalMusicReview HERE.

“Powerclashing Maximalism” is available on Autocatalytica.bandcamp.com, Spotify, Apple Music.

Autocatalytica was formed as a solo project in 2009. From The Dillinger Escape Plan to The Mars Volta, to Bjork, to Devin Townsend, to 20th-century composer Bela Bartok, Autocatalytica‘s sound is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions.

Upon moving to Boston to study at Berklee in 2010, Thorfinnson recruited guitarist Erik Sorensen, Drummer Emmett Ceglia, and bassist Jon Anderson to flesh out Autocatalytica’s line-up. Over the next few years the band played its first shows and in April of 2012 released their debut EP “Horror Vacui”.

The group relocated to Brooklyn in the fall of 2012 and immediately began to rehearse and write a full-length record. In June 2013 the group began recording its eponymous LP, while continually playing shows along the east coast of the US. They released their Debut LP “Autocatalytica” in June 2014, and continued performing shows in and around Brooklyn, all the while furiously composing a follow-up record.

In early 2015, Thorfinnson found out he was going to have to move back to his native Toronto, ON, but despite this, the band decided to finish writing and recording the songs for their follow-up LP. In October 2015, tragedy struck the group when Guitarist Erik Sorensen suddenly passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition. Despite reeling from this massive trauma and coming to terms with Thorfinnson’s impending relocation, the group finished tracking drums to their next LP, and played their final show as a Brooklyn-based incarnation on Nov. 21st, 2015.

Thorfinnson spent most of 2016 toiling away at the tracking and mixing of this next record at home in his native Oakville, Ontario, and on December 9th, 2016 the group released the LP “Vicissitudes”, a 16-track maximalist genre-gauntlet of sporadic insanity.

Over the next few years, Thorfinnson spent most of his time on other projects, as the future of Autocatalytica remained uncertain. In 2018, he decided there was still more music to be had from Autocatalytica, and teamed up with his friend and drummer Neilroy Miranda (of local Jazz-math stalwarts “Dog Drive Mantis”) to rehearse and record a new album. The idea for this record was to be a much more collaborative effort than previous releases that had seen Thorfinnson handing all vocal and most guitar duties. The record “Powerclashing Maximalism” features a smattering of collaborators including Parliament Owls / Telomere’s Devlin Flynn, Northern Heirs’ Scott Carruthers, and Plethora’s Gary Walsh to name a few. While at this time Autocatalytica exists solely as a recording project, but no one knows what the future holds!

“This is an album that’s just on all the time; at its core, it is a progressive metal work, with Protest the Hero as a possible cited influence. But in other places, the album also uses a copious amount of strings, wind instruments, and jazz-inflected time signatures to create a whirlwind of groove, aggression, and, here we go, maximalism. “Cheggo”, which we are proud to premiere here today, has all of that and more. From its nu-prog opening, through the more dreamy middle passages and all the way to its noisy outro, “Cheggo” is everything that’s great about Autocatalytica and Powerclashing Maximalism.” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy

“Powerclashing Maximalism is intricate, varied, and impressive. But above all else, it’s just plain fun. The kind of fun that is contagious. Some people won’t like Powerclashing Maximalism due to the sheer variety of sounds, or due to the somewhat metalcore-y moments scattered throughout. For everyone else, though, Autocatalyctica have delivered a captivating experience that should be given a chance. Their influences inform their sound, but they breathe a new life into all of their steps. 8/10” – Metal Utopia

“I’ve had a hard time tagging this one as well, but I think I’ll stick with the good ol’ catch-all “progressive metal”. Yes, it’s got mathcore; yes, it’s got deathgrind; yes, it’s got djent, so what am I to do? Find the common denominator, I guess! So, you’ll be treated with an incredibly high calibre product for all aforementioned genres (and more!) Fans of heavy music and multiple genres, jump right in and support this awesome artist!” – Can This Even Be Called Music?

“‘Powerclashing Maximalism‘ by Autocatalytica is an album that smashes all preconceived notions of rules you thought existed and brings a unique experience to the listener. There’s something for everyone here. Sure, ‘Powerclashing Maximalism‘ is progressive and heavy but it’s so much more. I don’t think there is anything similar at the moment. Each song has its own distinctive sound which is different from the rest.” – The Music Below

“Overall, this is Progressive Death Metal turned up to 11. The tight instrumentation is un-matched. 8/10” – Metal Temple

“Eric (Thorfinnson) does most of the mixing/production on every release, and with this one he has managed to give us a multitude of rock and metal styles, in eight tracks lasting a total of 37 minutes. 4/5” – The Prog Space

“if you combine the modern, masterful and unpredictable prog of Tesseract with the adventurousness and epic nature of Opeth (and make them both more intense), you get Autocatalytica. In my opinion this is a rarely flawless album and is very strongly recommended listening for all metal heads. I really can’t think of a single thing I’d change.” – The Independent Voice

“If you like complex metal with progressive hints, growl and no boundaries. Check this out.” – Melodic.net

Autocatalytica is a bubbling cauldron of scatter-brained prog-metal insanity helmed by guitarist/vocalist Eric Thorfinnson. The newest release for the band “Powerclashing Maximalism” was recently released last month on October 16th. The LP is the band’s third and it explores all corners of Autocatalytica’s sound in a tight 36-minute runtime over eight tracks, from the Meshuggah-esque stomp of “Borndun” to the Jazzy Math Rock of “Cheggo”. While at this time Autocatalytica exists solely as a recording project, no one knows what the future holds!

Today, in support of the album, the band is sharing their latest lyric video for the track “Zippler”. A song written about the illusion of free will, it splits down the middle in the vein of the likes of Protest the Hero and the Mars Volta, it’s zippy, groovy, and has got some chaos thrown in for good measure.

The lyric video can be viewed and heard via its premiere on NewFuryMedia HERE.

Formed as a solo project in 2009, as an expressive outlet for Thorfinnson’s abstract angst and penchant for everything over the top. Autocatalytica is a bubbling cauldron of scatter-brained prog-metal insanity helmed by guitarist/vocalist Eric Thorfinnson. The newest release for the band “Powerclashing Maximalism” is due out this Friday, October 16th. For the full-length’s release day, Autocatalytica is unleashing the lyric video for the track “Borndun”.

The track is described by the band as “an obvious nod to Meshuggah, heavy, expansive and with just the right amount of weirdo groove, written generally about the current political situation.”.

Listen to “Borndun” via its premiere on SonicPerspectives HERE.

Formed as a solo project in 2009, as an expressive outlet for Thorfinnson’s abstract angst and penchant for everything over the top. Thorfinnson has always drawn inspiration from a vast collage of different artists resulting in a sound that is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions.

The LP “Powerclashing Maximalism” is the band third and it explores all corners of Autocatalytica’s sound in a tight 36-minute runtime over eight tracks, from the Meshuggah-esque stomp of “Borndun” to the Jazzy Math Rock of “Cheggo”. While at this time Autocatalytica exists solely as a recording project, no one knows what the future holds!

Thorfinnson’s comments on the album:

“‘Powerclashing Maximalism’ is an expression of the many different facets of progressive and heavy music I am engaging at this point in my life, with little to no regard for thematic consistency between tracks. Each song is a fully realized Island of uniqueness that expresses something totally different from the previous one. On the last record, I felt like I was really losing perspective with what was good and quality (especially in the vocal department) seeing as I did so much of it completely isolated. With this record I really wanted to move away from that mindset and integrate as many collaborators as possible to create a sort of “Broken Social Scene” of metal type vibe. This was a fantastically inspiring experience and I am really grateful for having been able to work with so many different amazing musicians throughout the process.”

For fans of Devin Townsend, Meshuggah, and Protest The Hero, “Powerclashing Maximalism” is available as of October 16th on Autocatalytica.bandcamp.com, Spotify, Apple Music.

“With a bewildering, cross-pollinated sound that makes The Dillinger Escape Plan sound like Nickelback, the math-metal crew Autocatalytica are pushing the boundaries so far that they may just fall off the world’s edge…  While the math-metal scene seems to have stayed in the same creative spot for the last 15 years, Autocatalytica’s music exists in its own psychotic realm, wherein jazz-tinged extremity and melodic mazes conjure a disorientating blur of psychedelic noise. The band have also earned themselves a formidable reputation as a truly mind-bending live act.” – Metal Hammer

In anticipation of the release, Autocatalytica is releasing the single “Zippler” today via its premiere on TheProgSpace HERE.

Psychedelic variegated groovy maniacal ethereality is summed up by Thorfinnson in his own words:

“’Powerclashing Maximalism’ is an expression of the many different facets of progressive and heavy music I am engaging at this point in my life, with little to no regard for thematic consistency between tracks. Each song is a fully realized Island of uniqueness that expresses something totally different from the previous one.”

The single “Zippler” is a mix, pretty much right down the middle of Protest the Hero and the Mars Volta, it’s zippy, groovy, and it has got some chaos thrown in for good measure, written about the illusion of free will. It was a last-minute addition to the rehearsals and decided upon due to the need for something super fast to fill out the record. It features clean vocals from Parliament Owl’s and Telomere’s Devlin Flynn and screams from Plethora’s Gary Walsh.

Formed as a solo project in 2009, as an expressive outlet for Thorfinnson’s abstract angst and penchant for everything over the top. NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – August 7, 2020

Toronto’s Prospects Announce Intriguing New Prog Track “Orphic Trigger” Off EP “Recalling”

EP “Recalling” Out September 4th

Progressive metal act Prospects have unleashed a new single “Orphic Trigger” coming from the upcoming four-track EP “Recalling” due out September 4th, 2020.

Founded in 2014 by multi-instrumentalists Robert Medeiros, Prospects combines influences from acts like Opeth and The Contortionist for chillingly heavy tracks with multiple layers. In a niche, but thriving genre, the band aims to broaden their horizons and bring together fans from different backgrounds, united by a love of heavy and experimental music. The band explains one of the unique challenges they had when recording this album:

“Since there is some distance between band members, we all recorded/tracked the instrumentals on our own, compiled them into an organized folder, and sent them to be mixed and mastered by Jamie King. Vocals were recorded by Mike Indovina.”

“Orphic Trigger” can be enjoyed as individual songs or as an entire EP experience; with only 4 songs, but 32 minutes of audio you can rest assured that each song is its own adventure entirely. Even though there are snippets of a storyline from the previous album, 2017’s “Calling Of A Red Bird”, they all feel original and cohesive.

With Medeiros on vocals, keys, and guitar, Matt Dalton on guitar and vocals, drummer Anthony Zicari and bassist Mathew Lothian, Prospects builds a catalogue of melodic and rhythmic interest, looking outside of metal to genres like jazz, orchestral, and world music for further inspiration. Perfect for deep thinking, subculture aficionados, lovers of the outdoors, hipsters, and geeks, Prospects weaves together technicality with melody.

For fans of Between The Buried And Me, The Contortionist and Opeth, Prospects is heavy, melodic, and exotic.

“Orphic Trigger” is now available as of August 7, 2020 and can be heard on the following links:
YouTube
Bandcamp
IGTV

along with Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon HERE.

The full “Recalling” EP will be released on September 4, 2020.

Prospects is a Toronto progressive metal band founded in 2014 by multi-instrumentalist Robert Medeiros. Generally inspired by modern metal and acts from numerous other genres Prospects released their debut “The Calling of a Red Bird” in 2017 as a foray into the plethora of bedroom level studio albums.

Following this advent, Medeiros took a short hiatus to refine his songwriting and production skills. He would meet guitarist Matt Dalton in 2019 and form the initial line up with Mathew Lothian on bass shortly after.

With the initial 2017 release of Calling of a Red Bird utilizing midi drums, the group was looking for a real drummer that could fill the role. After posting in several online forums and Facebook groups, it wasn’t too long before finding drummer Anthony Zicari and things fell into place.

As rehearsals became a regular thing and a few songs started shaping up the band aimed to find their way onto local bills around the GTA (greater Toronto area).

Back to the recording sessions, the band has been working on their new EP “Recalling” expected for release in 2020. Working with Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, The Contortionist, Etc) for mixing and mastering, the band is confident a great product for the masses. The EP “Recalling” is a collection of old and new material, showcasing where the band has come from, but also where they are heading!

#7 FALLEN LEGION on Top 20 July 2018 Canadian College Radio Loud Charts (Earshot)

“Downfall is an impressive effort…Their musicianship is first class…” – Hellbound

“The band brings and fuses influences from Gojira, Korn, Iron Maiden, and Dethlok with its deeper lyricism and heavier tunes. The EP has something for all metal fans. ” – Canadian Beats

“If you are interested in bands such as Veil of Maya, Between The Buried And Me, Protest The Hero then you really ought to seek these guys out. If they can produce an EP of this quality when they are unsigned just what are they going to be doing then they have a label behind them?” – Frame Music Mag

“Like a cocktail of the idiosyncrasies of metal’s greatest eccentrics, Fallen Legion’s debut EP caters firmly to fans of the weirder shades of the genre. As easily comparable at one moment to System Of A Down as it is to Between The Buried And Me at another, ‘Downfall’ blends its frenetic savagery with an underlying wackiness to satisfying effect…With multiple listens bearing increasing rewards, Fallen Legion is a name to remember for anyone whose musical tastes teeter on the edge of sanity.” – Uber Rock

“Fallen Legion have proven their aggression, established their fluidity in the metal genres and now I just cannot wait to see how they progress as a band over the coming years.” – Overdrive Music Mag

Unleashing their debut album “Race Against Time” this past January, Ottawa’s instrumental progressive metal trio THE DEAD CENTURIES’ full length features ten tracks of melodic, high energy and refreshing material. Influenced by Protest The Hero, Periphery, Paul Gilbert, Sithu Aye and Intervals, their release is full of hook and sinker compositions, shining guitar riffs and overall escapades through their instrumental progressive metal. Teaming up with New Noise Magazine, THE DEAD CENTURIES are showcasing their shredding chops with their second guitar playthrough for “Blood Dragon”.

“Blood Dragon is another high energy song focusing on the interaction between guitar lines. It features a dance inspired two handed guitar section which blends complexity with listen-ability. The final section of the song changes pace for a guitar solo which features bursts of harmonized guitar to add moments of increased intensity.” comments guitarist Adam Tremblett.

About:

Visionary and highly influential writer Michael Moorcock, who worked with the bands Hawkwind and Blue Oyster Cult, memorably stated that ‘it is the business of the future to be dangerous’.

Ottawa three-piece THE DEAD CENTURIES are both futuristic and dangerous…which is as it should be. Influenced by Protest The Hero, Periphery, Paul Gilbert, Sithu Aye and Intervals, THE DEAD CENTURIES can easily hold their heads up in such exalted company.

Composing and performing technically precise instrumental progressive metal, THE DEAD CENTURIES are rich in virtuosity, melody, compositional skills, and most importantly…they create superb music to listen to. This isn’t the sound of three musicians showing off their undoubted skills, rather they are serving their songs above all else, with every fibre of their beings, every neuron firing in their minds, every tendon in their bodies. In a sense it is as if the three musicians that make up THE DEAD CENTURIES have become one mind in their own music. Their debut album “Race Against Time” was released on January 26th, 2018.

“High energy instrumental metal, The Dead Centuries are all about massive hooks, futuristic riffs & technical melody. Opener Freddie Lounds is rich in skill, showcasing how a trio’s different abilities can combine to make something that sounds so grand & complete.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“they’re not here to show you their muscles, but to share their record collection with you through a bright, pacey, grinning album that deserves every spin. Ace.” – Overdrive Mag

“Race Against Time features ten tracks of high energy material that would be an ideal piece to add to the collection of any fan of progressive metal.” – Pure GrainAudio

Teaming up with GearGods.net, THE DEAD CENTURIES are showcasing their shredding chops with their fist guitar playthrough for “Reboot”.

“Reboot follows our second track “Gotham” on the release, but incorporates heavier elements bridging melodic sections. Near the end, Reboot features a harmonized lead section, which then continues with a harmonized guitar solo over top. The main idea is to bombard the listener with fast, melodic, dense, energy before closing with a chorus, which doesn’t give the listener the expected harmonic resolution.” comments guitarist Adam Tremblett.
