On Friday, July 10th, cinematic rock metallers Alizarin will be releasing their sophomore album “The Last Semblance”. Unlike their strictly instrumental debut record “Cast Zenith” (2018), this next release features prominent vocals throughout from guitarist Josh Kay. Rich harmonies and baritone resonance from Kay’s voice add a new dimension to the music, allowing the band’s sound to expand to truly uncharted territory.

The album covers a wide spectrum of sonic landscapes and emphasizes the melodic journey over deliberate technique. Although vocalist and guitarist Joshua Kay is the chief songwriter of Alizarin, the compositions on the new record focus on a balance from each instrument, with less of an emphasis on the domination of guitar solos and a greater exploration of what each musician is capable of. Drawing influence from such groups as Porcupine Tree, Haken, Alice in Chains, Opeth, Portishead, and many more, the result of Alizarin‘s sound is one that is challenging to define, pensive, and often at the crossroads of melody and dissonance.

Today, before the album’s official release, the band has teamed up with SonicPerspectives for the full stream premiere of “The Last Semblance” HERE.

Kay adds:

“We are extremely excited and proud to present our new album ‘The Last Semblance’, a record that defies the expectations of modern progressive music and offers something for every listener. This music takes our brand of cinematic metal we began on our debut record and expands upon it in every single way. Rich and dramatic compositions, unorthodox chord progressions, lush vocals and harmonies, and compelling melodies abound on our new album. We wanted to stand out from our peers and offer something that will be immediately memorable and captivating, yet will continue to reveal new layers of depth upon every listen.”

“The Last Semblance” will be available on Bandcamp (CD and Digital), Spotify, and Apple Music.

Born out of the forward-thinking inclinations of guitarist/vocalist Josh Kay in late 2017, Alizarin is on a mission to explore unconventional rock music. In addition to Kay, the Los Angeles based group consists of Jon Damon on drums, Terran Fernandez on bass guitar and Avelino Ramirez on keyboard.

“in a musical world swollen with progressive bands, Alizarin is a welcome and refreshing alternative, and and The Last Semblance an entertaining listen. Recommended. 4/5” – Dangerdog Music Reviews

“ALIZARIN play scintillating prog-metal and create a sonic soundscape.” – RAMzine

“While some of the material is more fitting to be described as “cinematic rock” due to the instrumental muzak feel of the songs’ structure, this album possesses the punch of a Dream Theater release and the momentum of a King Crimson record.” – Metal Injection (Album Review – Cast Zenith)

Cinematic rock metallers Alizarin announce they will be releasing their sophomore album “The Last Semblance” on July 10, 2020 and are excited to share the full length’s third single ‘Heirloom’. The track is one of the heavier, more energetic, and harder-hitting songs with some of the strongest vocal parts and strangest grooves on the album.

Today, the band has teamed up with TheProgSpace for the premiere of ‘Heirloom’ HERE.

Vocalist/guitarist Josh Kay explains the track in further detail:

“It is one of the most heavy-hitting, catchy, and melodic tunes that also captures many of the approaches we incorporate. “Heirloom” almost steps into power metal territory, while still holding a firm footing in groove-oriented progressive metal. Thematically, the song considers the timeline of humanity and our intellectual evolution. It looks at humans as emotionally charged and proud “adolescents” of sorts on this timeline, with a long way to go to find a more harmonious existence, if that time ever arrives. ”

Alizarin released their first full-length album, titled “Cast Zenith”, in 2018 and is preparing to release their new album “The Last Semblance” in summer 2020. Unlike their strictly instrumental debut record, this follow up release features prominent vocals throughout. Rich harmonies and baritone resonance from Kay’s voice add a new dimension to the music, allowing the band’s sound to expand to truly uncharted territory.

“The Last Semblance” covers a wide spectrum of sonic landscapes and emphasizes the melodic journey over deliberate technique. The album draws influence from such groups as Porcupine Tree, Haken, Alice in Chains, Opeth, Portishead, and many more. The results are a sound that is challenging to define, pensive, and often at the crossroads of melody and dissonance.

Kay adds:

“The album is a work of cinematic progressive metal, centered around brooding melodies and wrapped in epic compositions. There are influences from many styles of music, many beyond metal as well. The music is very melody-driven, with technical aspects in moderation woven into the larger song structures. The chords, melodies, and arrangements are meant to be unpredictable, unconventional, and compelling while remaining extremely listenable and catchy.“

Album pre-order HERE along with an immediate download of singles ‘Heirloom’, ‘Velvet Margin’, and ‘Elegy Simulacra’ plus their previous release “Cast Zenith” available on Spotify and iTunes.

“If you like true prog with many deep routed jazz rhythm changes, close harmonies, and unexpected cadences, this is certainly the album for you. It has a classic sound, which reminds me very much of bands like The Enid and Rush, but also is heavily influenced by more recent developments like Opeth.” – Ever Metal  (Album Review – The Last Semblance)

“While some of the material is more fitting to be described as “cinematic rock” due to the instrumental muzak feel of the songs’ structure, this album possesses the punch of a Dream Theater release and the momentum of a King Crimson record.” – Metal Injection (Album Review – Cast Zenith)

“‘Cast Zenith’ is music that has intelligence and depth, music that takes the listener on an involving journey. This is a great start from this impressive trio and one which promises much for the future, Alizarin are a band that we definitely need to keep an eye on.” – Prog Radar  (Album Review – Cast Zenith)

“Creating songs that can grip the standard listener and help expand their ideas and thoughts on what music should and can be. That’s what makes great prog truly great, and on that note the debut album Cast Zenith is a great album by a fantastic band.” – Metal Assault (Album Review – Cast Zenith)

“There is a lightness, space and confidence on this album, and it certainly doesn’t come across as a self-released debut, but rather from guys who have been around the block. Jazzy prog metal (love the distorted chorded fretless bass on “Anomaly”) which is worth hearing.” – Progressor (Album Review – Cast Zenith)

“There is plenty of variety on this all-instrumental debut. Alizarin have produced a stunning debut, showing compositional chops and instrumental prowess.” – Progressive Rock Fanatics (Album Review – Cast Zenith)

Cinematic rock metallers Alizarin announce they will be releasing their sophomore album “The Last Semblance” on July 10, 2020and are excited to share the full length’s second single ‘Velvet Margin’. The track is very vocally driven with many harmonies throughout with plenty of piano and acoustic guitar sections.

Today, the band has teamed up with Metal-Rules for the premiere of ‘Velvet Margin’ HERE.

Vocalist/guitarist Josh Kay explains the track in further detail:

“This second single, “Velvet Margin”, is a drastic contrast from most of the other tracks on the new record. Driven by haunting vocal lines, expressive counter harmonies, and layered acoustic instrumentation, the song arguably contains some of the most melodic and memorable passages on the album. In many ways it is some of the most uncharted territories for Alizarin, letting the vocals drive a lot of the music and focusing even less on flashy or over the top instrumentation. The closest thing to a “ballad” we have, although we tend to steer clear of that term.”

Born out of the forward-thinking inclinations of guitarist/vocalist Josh Kay in late 2017, Alizarin is on a mission to explore unconventional rock music. In addition to Kay, the Los Angeles based group consists of Jon Damon on drums, Terran Fernandez on bass guitar, and Avelino Ramirez on keyboard.

0 THE RETICENT Releases Dark Somber Cover of Metallica’s “Fade To Black”; New Album “The Oubliette” Coming 2020 via Heaven & Hell Records

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 3, 2020

For fans of Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Katatonia, The Contortionist, King Crimson

THE RETICENT Releases Dark Somber Cover of Metallica’s “Fade To Black”

New Album “The Oubliette” Coming 2020 via Heaven & Hell Records

The Reticent has a new single out, a cover of Metallica’s classic “Fade To Black”, which will be featured on the progressive metal band’s forthcoming album “The Oubliette”  produced by Jamie King (BTBAM, The Contortionist, etc.) and due out later this year via Heaven & Hell Records.

The already somber tune is matched up with an equally solemn black and white video. Chris Hathcock, the founder of the band, who performed all main instruments and vocals on the track, goes into depth about choosing the cover:

“The original is a timeless classic, but in listening to it I thought that perhaps the sadness of the words were somewhat attenuated by the catchy and driving riffs. It thematically fell right in line with the over concept of “The Oubliette” as that blanket of loneliness and despair can fall over the suicidal and Alzheimer’s patients alike. I decided to reduce the instrumentation as much as possible to increase that sense of isolation and only used effects to increase the atmosphere. Minimalist and empty sounding like a hospital room.  The result hopefully draws more attention to the stark hopelessness in the lyrics. The distance and atmosphere in the track are meant to feel not just isolated, but almost ghostly – as if we are hearing the baleful thoughts of a man void of hope trapped in a hospital bed.”

The Reticent began as an almost exclusively melancholy acoustic project for Hathcock. As time has gone on, the sound of the band got heavier and more diverse. The progressive nature of the band’s most recent offerings now encompasses such a wide scope that one can’t listen to a single song and know the band’s sound.

Recommended for fans of Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and Katatonia; “The Oubliette” will be the fifth album in The Reticent’s discography and is expected out in 2020 as the release date is TBA.

About:

The Reticent are an NC outfit that Hard Rock Haven put it, “progressive in the truest sense of the term”.  Beginning as an atmospheric acoustic side project for mastermind Chris Hathcock while he toured with war-metallers Wehrwolfe, The Reticent has become a fully realized emotional experience rooted in progressive rock and metal. This is epitomized in the band’s critically acclaimed latest release on Heaven & Hell Records, “On The Eve Of A Goodbye”, produced by Jamie King (BTBAM, The Contortionist, Scale the Summit) – a tragic autobiographical concept record that chronicles the day before, day of, and day after the suicide of Hathcock’s childhood friend Eve.

Critics and fans of the record alike have been moved by the compelling narrative and heartrending performances. The Reticent has gone even further in their live performances to create an audiovisual emotional experience unlike any other by utilizing film, story-telling, and the sheer intensity of the music. Such unique and evocative performances have earned The Reticent a reputation throughout the east as a stellar live show – taking in awards for their live performances from magazines like YES! Weekly. This intense live experience is achieved thanks to the incredible talents of The Reticent’s other members: James Nelson (Ozai), Cliff Stankiewicz (Abacab, Interstellar Overdrive), and Mitch Moore (Rites to Sedition, Inferion).

As of 2019, Hathcock has begun preparing The Reticent for a new concept album and all new stage shows. The forthcoming album (again produced by Jamie King), “The Oubliette” is another stirring autobiographical tale, this time of the tragedy of Alzheimer’s disease. Fans and critics alike are eager to sink their teeth into another intense emotional outpouring of progressive metal as The Reticent prepares to release new music and strike back out on the road.

Tylor Dory Trio‘s new record “Unsought Salvation” officially drops on December 21st, but before it’s out, the band has teamed up with MetalInsider.net for the album’s full stream premiere HERE.

Full of enlightening riffs and spicy drumming, topped with delectable vocals, the album is the perfect listen to comfort you as the winter nights grow longer. The full length’s bass, drums, and guitars were recorded in Norway with Christer Cederberg at Cederberg Studios in Kristiansand during February 2017, as depicted in the band’s music video ‘East of Eden‘. Vocals and synth were recorded in their hometown of Edmonton at The Laboradory.

TDT explains the full length:

“We believe that ‘Unsought Salvation’ perfectly captures the band’s complete sound – combining some of the lighter, upbeat moments from our first self titled EP, the darker, moodier atmosphere of the ‘Carried Away’ EP, and more concise, mature songwriting than each of our previous releases. There’s still plenty of odd times, dynamic changes, unconventional chord progressions, playful drum and bass interplay, and slippery guitar solos, but we also focused on trimming the fat off of our arrangements so that we served the songs as opposed to showing off our musical abilities.”

Tylor Dory Trio was conceived in late 2012 by guitarist/vocalist Tylor Dory and drummer Jonathan Webster. Wanting to step aside from playing in extreme metal bands, Dory and Webster decided to form the duo to explore the music close to their hearts – proggy weird stuff. The trio was completed in late 2013 after the addition of their bassist Slava Fedossenko.

Bringing together influences like Opeth, Alice In Chains, and Rush; TDT is characterized by proficient musicianship, tight songwriting, and powerful hooks. It’s progressive metal that isn’t pretentious. TDT loves pushing the boundaries of what a power trio can accomplish, but above all else, it’s about the songs.

Musically, they take their fans on a journey through light and dark tonalities, crushing heaviness to ethereal cleanliness, through peaks and valleys that end up coming full circle.

“A therapy session during the synth backed opening of “The Righteous and the Rest” about being prisoners of our own thoughts is certainly a novel way to start an album. The surprise is that after the first wave of synth backed Progressive Metal riffs play out, we are greeted by the bright riffs of the likes of Intervals with some Grunge era vocals that you wouldn’t expect to find as an accompaniment but work incredibly well. How Tylor Dory himself can manage to sing this well and play the riffs he does here live can only be a thing of wonder.” – Metal Noise

“so much of Unsought Salvation will bring a joyous smile to the face as it twists and turns in ways few can even imagine.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“Canadian band TYLOR DORY TRIO sounds very much like a jazz piece, but nothing could be more incorrect. What you get here is guitar driven progressive metal of class, and actually with some unique or at least unusual twists… They have their own style – sometimes heavy, sometimes soft. And there are mystical parts as well, with melancholy. An interesting acquaintance.” – Melodic.net

“The highlights on Unsought Salvation are threefold. The main highlight is the epic closing track, “Cenotaph.” It’s a fourteen-minute excursion into the realms of prog metal, replete with dexterous fretboard work, a left-field solo halfway through, some interesting piano work and stellar groove, and all told a solid, full-bodied arrangement. “East of Eden” also displays strong writing/arrangement techniques, while “The Fallen Man” displays sublime electronic augmentation and a killer sense of rhythm. All three songs, as well as the moody, intriguing “Into the Maelstrom,” also highlight a pretty cool feature of the album: every song segues into the next in a logical and compelling fashion, giving us the sense of listening to one cohesive, whole suite. It’s really well done.” – Angry Metal Guy

“les musiciens ont pris le temps et surtout le recul nécessaire pour nous offrir de fort bel manière une œuvre bien léchée, avec de belles trouvailles quant à l’arrangement et une recherche finement aboutie sur les voix qui rend l’ensemble plus que très sympathique. Pas mal de titres sortent du lot. Si vous recherchez de quoi mettre vos tympans au chaud pour cet hiver, vibrer sur des solos et autres riffs ou bien des rythmiques bien développées, alors penchez-vous sur cet album.” – ProgCritique

Tylor Dory Trio from Edmonton, Canada are putting out a new record and it’s exactly the warm proggy hug you need this winter. “Unsought Salvation” is full to the brim with warm riffs and spicy drumming, topped with delectable vocals that will comfort you as the nights grow longer.

TDT explains the connection between the new album and their 2015 debut EP “Carried Away”:

“The album should serve as a valid continuation from ‘Carried Away’ alongside spiritual ties to the first EP. ‘Carried Away’ was tonally quite dark, we feel that ‘Unsought Salvation’ is a more balanced presentation featuring some upbeat tracks alongside darker and heavier tracks that you may have come to expect from listening to ‘Carried Away’.”

For their second single, the band have teamed up with GhostCultMag to premiere the proggy acoustic guitar-driven track ‘Dying Light’. Tylor Dory explains:

“One of the album’s primarily acoustic tracks, our first EP and the Carried Away EP both featured an acoustic song and it was very important to us to carry that forward with ‘Unsought Salvation’. The song is played in an unconventional tuning (DABGAD) that I came up with while trying to gain access to certain chord voicing that wouldn’t have been available otherwise. Like many of our songs ‘Dying Light’ is a journey through many feels and tonalities, starting quite soft and gradually building up to an erupting guitar solo.”

Due out December 21, 2019, “Unsought Salvation” has something for everyone and will especially be enjoyed by fans of Devin Townsend, Opeth, and Porcupine Tree.

About:

Their latest full length “Unsought Salvation” was recorded with the prolific Christer-Andre Cederberg at his studio in Kristiansand, Norway in February 2017, to be released December 20, 2019, to follow their 2015 EP “Carried Away”

For the first single off the album, ‘East of Eden’, the trio have put together a video featuring their adventures in Norway where the full length’s bass, drums, and guitars were recorded with Christer Cederberg at Cederberg Studios in Kristiansand in 2017. Vocals and synth were recorded in their hometown of Edmonton at The Laboradory.

When asked about the themes present in ‘East of Eden’, TDT explains:

“It’s’ our leading single and one of the most accessible and hooky songs on the album. I love how the chorus evolves in this song, getting bigger and bolder each time. A song about betrayal, we feel that East of Eden matches the fire of the lyrics while staying refined musically. Also, the only song, other than the acoustic tracks, recorded on six-string guitars as opposed to eights.”

About:

When an artist uses his own name to present his music to the world, he is being truly fearless, with no identity to hide behind but his own.

This is as it should be, no great art was ever produced without great bravery, and Marc Durkee is an artist unafraid to dig deep into both his own personal suffering and the world around him for inspiration.

Inspired by Katatonia, Tesseract, Anathema, Devin Townsend, Coheed & Cambria, Durkee describes his music as “progressive, metal/rock, Doom metal, post-hardcore, post-rock.”

Durkee’s new album, solo in the true sense of the word, is entitled ‘Remain In Stasis’, and is loaded with deep meaning to this courageous and talented artist, as he explains.

“The first meaning is personal. I’ve been stuck in a state of depersonalization for almost five years now. For me, it’s been a chronic symptom of dealing with years of depression and stress, and it’s unrelenting. When it’s at its worst, it removes mostly all motivation and enjoyment from my life. While that is unfortunate, it does serve as a major source of inspiration for song-writing…The second meaning is more political and universal. I feel that humanity is at a unique point in our history, with technology and social media allowing us to communicate and express ourselves in ways that were previously unimaginable. And yet, nobody really DOES communicate. It seems as though it’s mostly used as a platform to bicker over political ideals and agendas and create discourse, or for anyone to use as their own personal performance venue. Everyone wants to be seen and heard, even those who really don’t deserve to be.”

Marc Durkee is one artist who really does deserve to be heard, and now that ‘Remain In Stasis’ has been released, all the world will hear him.

Track Listing:
1. The Dark Dimension (5:05)
2.  A Way To Escape (5.22)
3.  Mimesis (3:55)
4.  A Great Disdain (3:58)
5. Redesign (In Stride) (4:45)
6. The Mind Flayer (4:36)
7.  A Number Of Years (4:02)
8.  Not Without Sin (1:51)
9.  Meteor (4:56)
10. Stasis (5:03)
Album Length: 43:37

“Remain In Stasis is a deeply personal rock record that winds its way through feelings of depression, introspection and eventually, triumph. It should be high on the list of anyone who’s enjoyed doom metal’s rise into the indie spotlight. Fans of progressive acts in particular, like Anathema, Katatonia, Opeth and Tool, will find much to appreciate in Durkee’s vocal and guitar melodies. The shuddering beat of “A Way to Escape” brings to mind A Perfect Circle, as well as prog-master Steven Wilson.” – Exclaim!

“this album is exceptional and was a great listening experience. I think there was a really good balance between the upbeat and energetic electric songs as well as some more melancholy and mood-shifting acoustic numbers. Marc Durkee created a wonderful thing with ‘Remain In Stasis’, and while I can hear the influences he made it his own. I would definitely look forward to the release of this one.” – Overdrive Music Mag
“With a handful of EP’s and LP’s out since 2013, he is a one-man band with a vision. A dark and depressing sound that is accessible to Metal and Rock fans alike. “Remain In Stasis” is his first full-length album and all tracks are performed, written, produced, and mixed by Marc. There is some great guitar work here, from heavy, riffing in songs like the opening track “The Dark Dimension” and later in “A Great Disdain” to the acoustic passages in “Not Without Sin” and “A Way To Escape”. Overall it’s a fairly mellow album with the heaviness spread out evenly throughout. ” – Maritime Metal

“Durkee’s approach is multi-faceted and has many sounds blended into his music.  He would be great support for an Opeth, Steven Wilson or Katatonia tour….simply put he has broad horizons as an artist, and his music clearly reflects it.  Let’s all do the guy a favor and not only grab his upcoming album, but also get his great music out there.  2019 has many solid releases lined up and “Remain In Stasis” should be there the whole time.” – Technical Music Review

“While an excellent artist might touch the heart and mind of their audience, only the truly exceptional can reach out and touch a person’s soul. This has been achieved by Marc Durkee in the release of ‘Remain in Stasis.’” – Reverend Rock, host of Too Metal For Church on Hard Rock Hell Radio

“What a talented individual Marc Durkee is and Remain in Stasis is an album he can be very proud of. Filled with all manner of interesting soundscapes and complexities that showcase an impressive ear for song composition.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head Banging Life
““A Way to Escape” digs deep into Durkee’s struggle with depersonalization, the challenges of trying to find yourself and, ultimately, the role that plays in his creative process.” – The East Mag
