Knecht Shares 8-String Guitar Shred w/ New Playthrough “Transformation”

Out Now! Progressive, Instrumental Self-Titled Debut EP

Earlier this July, Joseph Knecht released his debut self-titled EP, a complex journey through progressive metal instrumentals, along with a well-thought-out blend of classic 70s and modern prog. Knecht started out strictly old school, however now he adds modern elements like 8 string guitar and goes for a more modern midrange-focused tone rather than the classic Les Paul through a Marshall sound.

To demonstrate his 8-string shredding, today he shares his latest playthrough video for the track “Transformation”. Knecht explains:

“This was one of the first songs I wrote with my 8 string.  It’s a hard-hitting sludgy mixed meter riff. With a hint of Tesseract in the middle with the staccato Djenty section. This song represents my transformation into the style that I have developed.”

Knecht writes and performs all instruments on the EP, except for the drums, which on this release he enlists the help of Jason Stewart who adds his own creative flair to the drum scaffolding. The result is something complex, yet accessible, enjoyable by die-hard prog fans and casual listeners alike.

The EP is recommended listening for fans of Haken, Porcupine Tree, Plini and Liquid Tension Experiment.

“Knecht” is available on the following digital platforms: Spotify, Bandcamp.

About:
Joseph Knecht, from Tabernacle, New Jersey, USA, has been playing music since he was a small child. He started out with piano when he was five and picked up the guitar a year later. Bass came along in high school and he attended Berklee College of Music to further his music education.

Looking to share the music he was writing and playing, he created his instrumental solo project Knecht, where he plays everything from classic rock to more modern progressive metal. He performs originals and covers as well as teaches private guitar lessons.

With influences rooted mainly in progressive and groove metal, he replaces vocals with sweeping, complex guitar melodies that are written like vocal melodies. A typical song starts with the rhythm, for him the rhythm guitars by themselves should be interesting and be able to garner attention through the piece. While he is doing this, he is thinking about what he might want the other instruments to be doing as well as keyboard sounds if there will be keyboards. For the drums, he will program a track for writing and recording purposes, but ultimately leaves it wide open for Jason Stewart.

Knecht’s debut self-titled EP is available on July 16, 2021. It features Jason Stewart on drums and was mixed and mastered by Charles-Henry Volk.

Joseph Knecht has his first EP ready for listeners around the world. The debut self-titled EP is a complex journey through progressive metal instrumentals, a well-thought-out blend of classic 70s and modern prog. Knecht, who has been playing music the majority of his life gives some insight into the record:

“I decided to make an EP and just started writing. “Transformation” and “Overture” were really the only two songs that I knew from the beginning would be on there. The rest were written for this project. It has djenty riffs combined with the classic keyboard sounds like the Hammond Organ and Minimoog. If you listen closely you can hear Jimmy Page licks in my solos and melodies.”

Knecht says that he started out strictly old school, however now he adds modern elements like 8 string guitar and goes for a more modern midrange-focused tone rather than the classic Les Paul through a Marshall sound.

Knecht is the solo project of New Jersey’s Joseph Knecht who has been playing music since he was a small child. He is gearing up to release his debut self-titled EP this summer and has the next single “Destruction”.

Citing that he “has never been the best at writing lyrics”, Knecht takes a purely instrumental stance with his music. He continues to explain:

“I write my guitar melodies like vocal melodies. I think to myself how I would want someone to sing over this part. When I wrote Destruction, I knew this was going to be the finale. It captures everything about my style, with elements from 70s and modern prog rock. It’s based around B Lydian dominant, which gives it a really interesting sound harmonically. It’s upbeat and has a bouncing quality, it is my favorite song on the EP.”

Listen to “Destruction” at the following links:
YouTube – https://youtu.be/3OeTgXI24GE
Spotify – https://spoti.fi/2TTF2sq

“Knecht” is recommended for fans of progressive and groove metal, especially those interested in bands such as Deep Purple, Dream Theater, and Led Zeppelin.

“Knecht” will be available on all digital platforms on July 16, 2021.

New Jersey’s Joseph Knecht is releasing his debut EP, a self-titled record that is a concise sample of the music he has been writing over the past couple of years. A well-versed musician, he plays both originals and covers in a wide range of genres, primarily focusing on progressive metal. His first single off this upcoming EP is “Overture (Excerpt From Halo Reach)”, a dramatic rendition of the theme from the classic video game. He explains why he chose the track:

“This is my cover of the Overture from the game Halo Reach. It’s a much more hard-hitting aggressive take on the original. It’s part of a song composed by Martin O’ Donnell. My idea was to take the original which was for orchestra and rearrange it for a prog metal band. The original is such a cool-sounding piece and every time I’d hear it I’d always imagine a metal version. When I got my 8 string and decided to make this EP, covering this song and taking advantage of the extended range of the instrument seemed like the perfect fit.”

The six-track EP takes a wide sampling of Knecht’s skills and presents them to the listener in a concise, yet varied audio experience. All instruments on “Knecht” were written and played by Knecht save for the drums, which are played by session musician Jason Stewart. The EP was mixed and mastered by Charles-Henry Volk.

Knecht is a lifelong musician, picking up piano at the age of five, since then he has learned to play guitar and bass and attended Berklee College of Music.

Predominantly prog with a hint of groove, “Knecht” is recommended for fans of Haken, Black Label Society, and Deep Purple.

Canada’s Matt Chanway Breathes New Life Into Progressive Metal With “Unrelenting”

Guitar Playthrough Premiere via GearGods

Vancouver’s talented Matt Chanway returns in 2021 with a new single “Unrelenting”, for which he has done a playthrough video being premiered today on GearGods HERE.

Chanway was a finalist in Guitar Idol, the world-renowned guitar competition that features the top up and coming musicians from around the globe, as well as holding a fellowship from The University of West London in music performance. His skills are on full display for the new playthrough video for his single “Unrelenting”. Chanway quotes on the track:

“This tune was a lot of fun to write, and I feel it flows a lot better than songs I’ve released in the past. One big difference is the use of live drums, played by the amazing Mike ‘Machine’ Mallais.  Previous music I’ve released has used programmed drums, and while my programmer did a great job, there is just something about live drums and Mike slayed it on this track. This is the first of several new songs I’ve got lined up this year, and I am very excited to play these live when it is safe to do so!”

Chanway’s progressive, instrumental metal is sure to tantalize listeners around the world who are looking for a mind-expanding sonic experience. His music is highly recommended for fans of Plini, Scale The Summit, and Animals As Leaders.

“Unrelenting” is will be available on all digital platforms on February 19, 2021.

About:

Matt Chanway is a Canadian guitarist, instructor, and session musician from Vancouver BC. His debut album was released in 2016 to critical acclaim, and not long after finished as a finalist in Guitar Idol, the world’s foremost guitar competition showcasing the top emerging players on the planet. In 2019, Chanway released the follow-up single “The Beyond”, once again to high praise. Holding a Fellowship in music performance from the University of West London, Matt teaches guitar and theory full-time in his hometown Vancouver BC.

Matt’s playing is inspired by a combination of the old and new school, with rock guitar players from the ’80s, modern progressive “shredders” such as Dan Mongrain and Jeff Loomis, as well as 70’s jazz-rock musicians John Mahavishnu and Al Di Meola. Fans of challenging, progressive, intense instrumental music – artists such as Plini, Alluvial, Tony Macalpine, Animals As Leader – will enjoy Chanway’s music.

Now in 2021, Chanway returns with a fresh new single entitled “Unrelenting”, an upbeat, shredtacular track to take listeners on a wonderful sonic adventure of instrumental progressive metal showcasing his authentic guitar themes, and addictive riffs. Plans for more music in 2021 is already in the works, and Chanway looks forward to sharing his razor-sharp passages meld with soaring solos.

– 30 –

“Solo artist Matt Chanway is a shredder whose instrumental compositions elicit comparisons to Conquering Dystopia, Alluvial, and the like. It becomes immediately evident that the dude knows his way around a fretboard (having studied guitar performance at the University of West London), but his widdely-woo is tasteful enough so as to not become tiresome, with care taken to first craft a sick riff to wail over.” – Geargods

“Matt’s self-titled solo debut is proof of his versatility and prowess as a musician… quite impressed by his new material” – Progzilla (Album Review – Self-Titled 2016)

“if you find bands like Megadeth, Revocation and guitarists such as Jeff Loomis to be up your alley, Matt Chanway’s debut effort is absolutely your cup of tea and you would be well-advised to give it a spin. A compelling debut in every aspect.” – Metal Assault (Album Review – Self-Titled 2016)

“This is not an album just for shredders, it’s for anyone who wants an album of great metal that will get your head banging and wear your air guitar out.” – The Ripple  Effect (Album Review – Self-Titled 2016)

“Burstfire solos, frantic time signatures, complicated riffing and the like are all signposts of an artist who wants to see how far he can go. Unsurprisingly, this ambition pays off. The release could stand on its own as proof that Matt could play alongside the world’s greatest in shred guitar.” – Prog Sphere Magazine (Album Review – Self-Titled 2016)

“The progressive metal genre never ceases to provide scores of insanely skilled guitar-slingers, and Vancouver’s Matt Chanway can now be recognized as another mind-blowing practitioner of the style.” – Guitar.com

Watch A Master At Work With Jeff Pennachio’s Playthrough Of “Interposition”

Debut EP “Setting The Stage” Out Now!

“Setting The Stage” is the debut solo EP from New York’s Jeff Pennachio (guitarist for Design The Void), containing three instrumental tracks that are composed in the style of fantastical soundtracks, creating an intricate picture that listeners can experience now.

To indulge fans further, Pennachio has recorded a playthrough video of the single “Interposition”. In it, viewers can learn how to play the parts of the song, or simply enjoy watching a talented musician in his element.

Pennachio pays great attention to his individual compositions, weaving cinematic riffs together with layers of orchestral pieces, which finalize in an elaborate symphony suited for a feature film. Thematic presentations along with a good amount of individual moving parts are an aspect of music that Pennachio holds in high regard and wants to continue pursuing. He delves into that thought in more detail:

“This EP is an important release to me as it has really allowed me to show all fans the cinematic approach I have been looking to take towards music. While being in a metal group full time, I have a specific composition structure that I use to approach all new songs. Should this EP be a successful release, it will certainly bring clarity to wanting to compose more of this type of music for all listeners.”

A complex and vivid listening experience, Jeff Pennachio is recommended for fans of Plini, Dream Theatre and Trans Siberian Orchestra.

About:
Jeff Pennachio comes from New York State in the USA and besides being known for his guitar playing in Design The Void, he is also releasing his own solo work.

Between 2016 and 2018 he wrote the solo material while in a cover group titled The Stay. The group did not steer in the direction so much of original music, but the inspiration was there to start composing music of this sort. He began working on the tracks as a small compilation for potential future work. After a couple of years had passed, Pennachio has finally taken the time to release this music to the public.

Pennachio writes and records all guitars, drums, bass, and orchestrations and will be continuing on composing music that takes inspiration from soundtracks. He also finds inspiration in bands such as Dream Theater, Plini, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. His debut solo EP “Setting The Stage” is due out January 22, 2021.

“You really have to admire what instrumental wizard Jeff Pennachio is doing on his new song, “Interposition”. A multi-instrumentalist that does indeed record every instrument himself (guitars, bass, drums, programming), his new solo EP Setting The Stage drops later this month… While relatively short at under 4 minutes long, the new song does a good job of offering what Jeff is all about – instrumental and progressive goodness that straddles the line between progressive rock and progressive metal with ease.” – New Fury Media

“For the music fans who love to deep dive into riveting instrumental tracks with emotion stirring guitar riffs, Jeff Pennachio has something incredible to offer you!” Yesterdaze News

“there are soaring solos and crunching riffs but lots of piano and keyboards too making this more of a progressive rock EP. Of course, it is not so easy when you only have three tracks and 13 minutes available but it promises much for the full album release which I will await with relish.” – Velvet Thunder

“a great taste of what this guy is all about. He clearly is ‘Setting The Stage’ for more to come. With this being an EP, it is just a short example of the talents of Jeff Pennachio. But it leaves you with no doubts about his ability to create quality music, this is perfectly showcased here… Jeff Pennachio is a very talented one man band. 8/10” – Rock Out Stand Out

“Setting The Stage” Out January 22, 2021

New York’s Jeff Pennachio (guitarist for Design The Void) is now streaming his debut EP “Setting The Stage” before it officially drops on Friday, January 22, 2021. The three-track collection of progressive instrumental soundscapes paints a diverse and explosive picture suitable for metal aficionados of all sorts.

The EP can be heard in full via its premiere on TheProgSpace HERE.

The three tracks on the EP are intriguing in their differences, yet uphold a cohesiveness amongst them. Pennachio took inspiration from his work with other bands to craft the tracks on this record.

The first track “Wilson Theatre” inspired the album artwork, and became an introduction to the theme and overall song of the second track “Interposition”, which is also the album single. The third track “The Voyager” is somewhat similar to the second, created from a keyboard part. To Pennachio, it particularly reminded him of a finale making it an easy one to finish strong and bring a close to this EP. Pennachio explains the album:

“Although the music I normally compose is in my band Design the Void, I personally believe this is a nice break from prog/death metal, with only a focus on instrumentation. I’m hoping this music will not just be enjoyable, but also sort of develop its own picture for the listener. I’ve always enjoyed music that can represent an image.”

Pennachio found it easy to put together this handful of songs, saying that they sort of wrote themselves at the time of composition. If this release is received well, he says fans can definitely expect another EP within a year or so.

A real treat for anyone who enjoys instrumental rock and intense soundtracks will enjoy Jeff Pennachio especially fans of Plini, Dream Theater and Trans Siberian Orchestra.

Jeff Pennachio Paints A Vivid Soundscape With “Interposition” Off Upcoming Debut EP “Setting The Stage”

Track Premiere via NewFuryMedia

“Setting The Stage” Out January 22, 2021

New York’s Jeff Pennachio (guitarist for Design The Void) is releasing a three-track EP “Setting The Stage” slated for release on January 22, 2021.

The instrumental compilation shows off Pennachio’s musical mastery as he takes on the responsibility of guitars, bass, drums, and orchestral programming. These songs were composed during his time in a cover group The Stay when he decided to pursue an original songwriting direction. Armed with new ideas, he ran with them and formed the EP, which he intends to follow up with more music that is almost inspirational from soundtracks.

The lead single from this collection is “Interposition”, which is a harmonious, progressive track that shows off the depth of Pennachio’s talent. According to him, it all started off with a small riff that came to him while working with another band and grew to be his favorite track on the EP. He explains in further detail:

“This piece was developed from a random keyboard riff that was partially inspired by an introduction of another song from the group Quantum (which, at the time, was our keyboardist’s main band). I believe this sound really brands what I was after from a compositional standpoint.”

Some listeners say the main theme of this song is a reminder of Christmas music in particular, but it is deep enough that there are sure to be many other comparisons. With the complexity and passion put into the track, it’s easy to see why it was picked as the single from the EP.

Jeff Pennachio is recommended for anyone who enjoys a complex and vivid listening experience especially fans of Plini, Dream Theatre, and Trans Siberian Orchestra.

The single “Interposition” can be heard via its stream premiere on NewFuryMedia HERE.

“Setting The Stage” is out on all digital platforms on January 22, 2021.

Beat The Heat With The Dead Centuries’ New Summer Single “Crystal Summer” Featuring Jacob Umansky (Intervals)

Premiere Video via TheCirclePit

Back in June, The Dead Centuries released their catchy sun-baked song “Pop a Soda”, and their second summer single “Crystal Summer” is ready for ears as of August 28, 2020.

Energetic, and uplifting, The Dead Centuries continue to provide the soundtrack for an awesome summer with hook oriented, melody-driven songs. They agree that this is the best material that they have released to date and they explain their musical journey in their own words:

“The idea behind ‘Crystal Summer’ was to release a track that has an upbeat, summer vibe (hence the name) that is in line with what we’ve done with our previous single “Pop A Soda”. We also shot a guitar playthrough video to add a visual element to the song, and our goal was to invoke feelings of fun, relaxation, and summertime.”

“Crystal Summer” features a solo piano introduction that establishes one of the main melodies of the song. This song builds on the foundation that they’ve laid down with “Pop A Soda”. Once again the inclusion of Jacob Umansky (Intervals/JIA) on bass brings another element to the track that helped them get closer to their vision.

With plans to keep releasing singles, The Dead Centuries is a band to keep an ear out for. They are recommended for fans of Intervals, Plini and Polyphia, and anyone else who likes melodic and technical tunes.

“Crystal Summer” can be heard via TheCirclePit‘s YouTube channel HERE.

About:

Visionary and highly influential writer Michael Moorcock, who worked with the bands Hawkwind and Blue Oyster Cult, memorably stated that ‘it is the business of the future to be dangerous.’

Ottawa three-piece The Dead Centuries are both futuristic and dangerous…which is as it should be. Influenced by Protest The Hero, Periphery, Paul Gilbert, Sithu Aye and Intervals, The Dead Centuries can easily hold their heads up in such exalted company. In their current form, The Dead Centuries compose and perform technically precise instrumental music, rich in virtuosity, melody, compositional skills, and most importantly…they create superb music to listen to. This isn’t the sound of three musicians showing off their undoubted skills, rather they are serving their songs above all else, with every fiber of their beings, every neuron firing in their minds, every tendon in their bodies.

In a sense, it is as if the three musicians that make up The Dead Centuries have become one mind in their own music! Adam Tremblett describes the sound of The Dead Centuries as “technical, melodic, energetic, heavy, precise.” Indeed The Dead Centuries are so precise, they are like some kind of cosmic clock; they are always on time.

The Dead Centuries had a natural evolution into the special band they are now, originally consisting of two guitarists, a bassist, female vocalist, and drummer; as members leftover time, those that remained rose to the occasion and created more technical and original music.

Crack A Cold Beverage And Drink Up Summer With “Pop A Soda” From The Dead Centuries Featuring Jacob Umansky (Intervals)

The Dead Centuries have a new standalone single out entitled “Pop A Soda”, it is the first track to be released from the band with guitarist Jacob McSheffrey as a writer. It’s the first step in the direction of more hook oriented, catchy songs.

“We’re extremely excited to release this track as we feel it marks a big step forward in terms of songwriting, composition, playing, and production. We think the sonic depth in “Pop A Soda” is more interesting, ear-catching, and rewarding than previous efforts from the band, and we think listeners will love the caliber of this track. The inclusion of Jacob Umansky (Intervals/JIA) on bass brings another element to the track that helped us get closer to our vision.”

“Pop A Soda” was recorded in Jacob’s home studio, with the exception of bass, which was written and performed by Jacob Umanksy of Intervals. The band reached out to Jacob via email asking if he would provide bass for the track, sent the track over and what you hear on the track is the first take that he sent them. Jacob also provided a video clip of him playing a section of the track, which highlights his unique approach to playing bass.

The Dead Centuries released an EP in 2018, “Race Against Time” and in their opinion, this single is the best material the band has released to date. It is energetic, upbeat, and technical and builds upon the foundation of “Race Against Time” to add more melody, hooks, and catchy riffs, which is what fans have come to expect from The Dead Centuries.

More is to come from The Dead Centuries, as they plan to continue to release singles to keep new fresh music coming to fans, reflecting their ever-evolving approach to music and songwriting.

For fans of Intervals, Plini and Polyphia the video for “Pop A Soda” is on YouTube – HERE.
