Biography

Thundering in the distance of the Canadian prairies from the depths of Winnipeg hail four-piece ENTITY generating blasphemous death metal tainted with thrash. The four-year-old project grew out of a desire to generate terrifying metal complete with gratuitous solos and complimentary blast beats that whip each song into shape. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such acts as Skeletonwitch, Cryptopsy, and legendary Canadian metal act Razor.

Carl Brown (bass), Kyle Braun (drums), Adam Kozak (guitar/vocals), Tyler Augusto (guitar) are constantly pushing their writing abilities to create music that sounds like an army pacing through the muddy trenches of war and emerges victorious. Their influences are present in each song, and elements from old school thrash to new school technical death metal can be extracted throughout. Instrumentally, the guitar tone pierces through the blasting drums and is stitched together with doomy vocals. Each song is written to be a map through a tremendous journey with the band as the listener’s adept guide.

The band has produced a slew of demos and albums over the course of 4 years and is ready to release the height of their musical efforts, ‘Phobia Of The Formless’ [LP] in early 2017. Their songs are filled with torturous lyrics that pair well with their high energy stage performance. Catch them on tour Summer 2016 across Western Canada on their way to Armstrong Metal Fest.

Vivek Venkatesh proudly presents a unique celebration of film, music and academic research in metal music studies titled Doomed to Death. This unique summerGrimposium festival will feature a live music event on August 5 with performances from extreme metal bands Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful and Cardinal Wyrm, preceded by an exclusive live interview with the founding members of death metal/grindcore veterans Repulsion.

And on August 4, Grimposium will host the Canadian premiere screening of Death by Metal – the biopic of Chuck Schuldiner, late frontman of the legendary extreme metal bands Death and Control Denied – as well as a death metal vocal workshop, an industry panel on the economics of extreme metal and an academic symposium, all hosted at Concordia University (VA114 Cinema, 1395 Rene-Levesque Ouest).

The Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful, and Cardinal Wyrm performance will take place at 20h00 on August 5 at Co-op Katacombes; tickets are $25 (Facebook eventhere; tickets on sale here). Jason Netherton, singer and bassist for Misery Index, says that the band “… is looking very much forward to Doomed to Death! TheGrimposium events are notably fantastic contributions to the extreme metal underground, and we are honored to be able to participate in this stellar event alongside such a ferocious mix of bands! Revel in Flesh!” Pranjal Tiwari, drummer and vocalist for Cardinal Wyrm states: “We can’t wait to return to Montreal, one of our favourite cities, and we have an album’s worth of new songs since the last time we played there. The bill that Grimposium has put together is a varied and interesting one with a bunch of stellar bands from different subgenres – we are very excited to bring the audience down into the belly of doom metal during our set, and lay a pall of heaviness over the evening’s proceedings.”

The live interview with Repulsion is at 16h30 at Co-op Katacombes; it is free and open to the public. Scott Carlson and Matt Olivo, founding members of Repulsionwill be interviewed by Albert Mudrian of Decibel Magazine and Jason Netherton from Misery Index about their role in the development of the genres of death metal and grindcore, and the influence that Repulsion has had on the global extreme metal scene.

The Death by Metal screening is free to the public and will take place at 19h00 on August 4 at the VA114 cinema at Concordia University (Facebook event here). There will also be a post-screening Q&A with director Felipe Belalcazar. The screening will be preceded by a death metal vocal workshop led by Marie-Hélène Landry ofObsolete Mankind and Sébastien Croteau of Necrotic Mutation. In addition, the event includes a bilingual panel on the Economics of Extreme Metal with Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel (Misery Index), Michael Berberian (Season of Mist), and Michelle Ayoub (Broken Board Montreal).

Finally, the Doomed to Death Academic Symposium will be held from 12h00 – 14h30 on August 4 at Concordia University’s Department of Education (FG 5.345, 1610 Rue Ste Catherine). For the first time since its inaugural event, Grimposium will feature a symposium featuring the academic and professional work of members of Misery Index and Vastum. Daniel Butler from Vastum, as well as Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel from Misery Index will explore the intersection of psychoanalysis, media studies and tourism management in the domain of extreme metal music studies and showcase their respective graduate research and professional projects (abstracts and more information are available here). The session will be moderated by Concordia University’s Lee Mellor, a SSHRC doctoral fellow, and a PhD Candidate in the Individualised program. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Canadian Metal Minstrels SCYTHIA Reveal New Play-Through Video For ‘Lineage’ via Gear Gods

Canadian progressive/power folklore metallers SCYTHIA recently released their newest full-length offering, Lineage. You can order your digital or physical copy of Lineage now via the band’s Bandcamp page. SCYTHIA guitarist and vocalist Dave Khan states, “We’re stoked to have our playthrough of “Lineage” up with Gear Gods! We use some really unusual gear. I play a custom-made Warrior Black Knight with X2N active pick-ups into an ENGL raider 1 x 12, and AJ plays a Ibanez RG premium through a Blackstar HT Stage 100.”

Although the band primarily self-produced the album, Lineage features engineering from Nino Laurenne (Firewind, Finntroll, Wintersun, Ensiferum) and Lasse Lammert (Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Powerwolf), and mastering from Svante Forsback (Rammstein, Volbeat, Firewind, Apocalyptica). Nino Laurenne is also responsible for mixing duties on the album. Lineage was recorded at LSD Studios in Lubeck, Germany and Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland.

SCYTHIA are gearing up to perform at two more events this summer before heading out on a tour this fall (details coming soon). See below for all currently confirmed performance dates.

About:

Like a charging bear Scythia have been playing progressive power metal with a twist of folklore since 2008. Scythia has coined their own sound while drawing influences from different genres such as celtic/gypsy folk music, power metal, death metal and progressive rock. Scythia’s albums and performances feature rich, poetic storytelling and grand tales that vividly captures the imagination of their listeners. Because of this, they have taken the independent scene by storm as they gather more and more fans both domestically and internationally. Scythia acquired its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with ancient Slavic imagery and melodies inspired from Balkan music. The name is fitting for a grandiose sound as Scythia is also an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia.

Scythia delivered their first album “Of War” in 2010 where the band’s distinctive sound was forged, which carried on to their next release “Of Exile” in 2011. These albums featured sound effects, narration and classical instrumentation to help drive home their story through the medium of concept albums. Touring and press associated with these albums garnered recognition for the band as they were nominated for the Best Metal Group/Duo for Canada’s Sirius XM Indies – Independent Music Awards. Other nominees include Bison B.C, Derelict, Devin Townsend Project and Mares Of Thrace. This is a great honor for the band to be included as nominees for these awards since they represents the Canadian independent music scene.

In February 2014, Scythia had its sights set on new and larger horizons. They released their 3rd full length album “Of Conquest”, which was engineered/produced by Lasse Lammert (Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Halcyon Way, Svarsot) at LSD Studios in Lubeck, Germany. Co-produced by Shaun Thingvold (Strapping Young Lad, Lamb of God, Fear Factory), Mixed by Nino Laurenne (Ensiferum, Wintersun, Kiuas, Firewind) at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland, and Mastered by Svante Forsback (Rammstein, Firewind, Korpiklaani,Apocalyptica) at Chartmakers in Helsinki, Finland. “Of Conquest” let to an overwhlemingly popular response and saw the band co-headline a major festival in Brazil and other festivals in the southeast USA in 2015.

“Of Conquest” sonically paved the way for their 4th full-length release “Lineage”, which was recorded using the same production team. 2016 sees Scythia getting ready for more touring in Canada and the US, and setting sail across the seas to international venues.

Canadian death metal masters NECRONOMICON have updated their dates for their first headlining tour across Canada since 2011 with support from technical death metallers Abiotic and epic death metal quartet Vesperia. The ‘Okkultis In Canada Tour’ presented by PureGrainAudio.com will kick off in Ottawa, ON on August 4th and head as far west as Vancouver to wrap up back east in Timmins, ON on August 26th (Note: Aug 27th in Oshawa Abiotic and Vesperia only). Following the cross Canadian tour, NECRONOMICON will meet up with Swedish black metallers MARDUK plus label mates Greece’s extreme metal titans ROTTING CHRIST and Dutch symphonic black metal trio CARACH ANGREN for their USA September tour.

BIO:

The Apex formed in August of 2013.

They are a collective of individuals from the Ontario metal community, whom over the years have come together from past bands such as, Closed Casket Funeral, Dismata, Blood Shot Eye, The Coalition Design, and Corprophemia to form The Apex.

In a true culmination of talent, dedication, and timing, this group has created a unique hometown sound that is now being called “Windsor Ghetto Tech”. The brutal sonic assault of their music coupled with the emotional reckless abandonment of their live performance, have drawn stanch comparisons to Meshuggah and classic Dillinger Escape Plan rounded out with a distinctly Canadian flair. To add influence, vocalist Darren M. suffers from Neurogenic Stammering, which effects his speech where the brain won’t tell the mouth what to say so he’s unable to carry on a normal conversation, but for some reason he’s able to scream all the lyrics live and that is how he gets to express himself vocally with the band.

In July, 2014 they entered Shark Tank Productions studio in Windsor, Ontario to begin recording their debut self-titled full length album, “The Apex”. They hired engineer Nick Kinnish of Serafina Productions (Johnny Truent, Architects, and more) to aid them in capturing their sound accurately. In November, 2014 they completed their recording and announced the independent release date of February 21st, 2015. In 2016, the band entered Empire Recording Studios to record their next release, the EP ‘Underbelly’ set to be unleashed in August.

TOUR EXPERIENCE
This band is no stranger to hitting the pavement to support the music they love to make. In their 15+ years of experience creating music in previous bands, they’ve been support on tour for bands like: Cephalic Carnage, All Shall Perish, Despised Icon, Cryptopsy, Today Is The Day, Killitorous, Erimha and Ion Dissonance to name a few. In previous bands they’ve also shared the stage on festivals with bands like: SOD, Venom, Obituary, Cradle Of Filth, Earth Crisis, God Forbid, Skinless, Beneath The Massacre and more to crowds up to 7500+ in North America.

Canadian band CELESTIAL RUIN is styled after European Symphonic Rock/Metal but executed with a decidedly North American flavor. Combining a heavenly destruction of heavy riffs with beautiful melodies, CELESTIAL RUIN create catchy, singable melodies, and rich symphonic textures. The compositions are “epic” by all accounts. One of Western Canada’s loudest outdoor metal festivals Farmageddon Open Air organized by Prairie Fire Events Ltd. has launched a Go Fund Me campaign in support of their next event to be held in 2018. Prairie Fire Events Ltd. organized last year’s 2015 fest that saw headliners Grim Reaper from the UK, American bands Pallbearer and Incantation plus Canadian bands Into Eternity and Archspire along with many more from Western Canada metal scene for its third edition in Ryley, AB (80 KM East of Edmonton) from June 11-14. Plus Earlier this year, Prairie Events Ltd. held their first indoor metal fest and conference, ShrEdmonton with headliners Dying Fetus, Acacia Strain, Jungle Rot, Black Crown Initiate, Goatwhore, Finnish power metallers Thunderstone along with some of Western Canada’s best including Disciples of Power, Planet Eater, Scythia, Tylor Dory Trio, Every Hour Kills among many more.

“Greetings, metal family!

By now, I’m sure most are aware that Praire Fire Events Ltd. is the not-for-profit incorporation responsible for forming the Farmageddon Open Air and Shredmonton metal festivals in the Edmonton, AB area. We are proud to bring these to you and have heard nothing, but great feedback since we started the first Farmageddon in 2013.

For our fifth festival, we are planning to bring you something HUGE in 2018. We are looking to dwarf anything we’ve done to date. It will take at least 2 years to fund raise for the event, apply for needed grants, etc, which we have already started to do. We are proud to host these events for the Canadian metal community and want to continue to do so.

That said, we are unfortunately struggling from a large financial hit due to the growing pains from the past few years, specifically Farmageddon Open Air 2015. A lot of variables came into play with the foul weather being a large part of it. This resulted in a large debt with one of our main investors. With deadlines set for payments and the downturn in the economy and job markets affecting us personally, we are struggling to make sure we don’t fall short of our payment deadlines.

We have quite a few fundraisers in the works over the next few months with some that require time to set up and promote properly. With this go-fund-me campaign, we are reaching out towards everyone that can help contribute to try to bring us back out of debt as fast as possible so we can start forming the backbone for the 2018 festival.

Every little bit helps, and goes a long way. We don’t forget our supporters, and you will be on top of our minds when it comes time to launch our next event. We want to bring western Canada a festival that will make the central Alberta heavy metal culture known worldwide for its professionalism, sense of community and belonging, and its rapport.

Farmageddon Open- Air was conceived in 2012 by Tyson Travnik whom is recognized in the Alberta metal scene through sound engineering duties and promotional services. After noticing the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise, Travnik wanted to re-create the intimate setting and host a festival with no internal borders in the Edmonton area.

After three very successful years, Farmageddon Open Air has proven to be one of the most prestigious metal open-air festivals in Canada with quality production that has been highly regarded by bands and patrons alike. The festival falls into a special category with Travnik setting goals of bringing in top-shelf bands that rarely, if ever play Canada. The costs of doing so are reflected in the ticket price with maximum attendance numbers not being something on the agenda. WACKEN METAL BATTLE CANADA 2016 edition has seen over 100 bands from across the country compete for ‘One Band To Rule Them All’ to perform at the world’s largest metal fest Wacken Open Air 2016 in Wacken, Germany, which holds an attendance of over 80,000 metalheads. This past Saturday, on June 11th in Toronto, ON at The Opera House, the country’s top five bands, Vancouver’s The Mountain Man (BC Winner), Edmonton’s Tales of The Tomb (Prairie Winner), Hamilton’s Profaner and Toronto’s Pyramid Theorem (Ontario Winners) plus Montreal’s DistortHead (Quebec Winner) shredded their blood, sweat and metal for one to be crowned this year’s champion.

After strong performances, the judges panel of Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment), Sarah Lutz (Metal Blade Canada), Darryl Hurs (Indie Week), Chris Gonda (PureGrainAudio.com), Tim Henderson (Bravewords.com), Andrew Epstein (Zombitrol Productions) and Glenn Fricker (Spectre Media Group) proclaimed Hamilton, ON’s PROFANER, Wacken Metal Battle Canada’s 2016 champion to join the ranks of previous national winners Vesperia (2015), MUTANK (2014) and Crimson Shadows (2013).

“After a close and epic battle our national champion that is Profaner has been yielded. We will be proud to showcase their brand of melodic death/thrash on behalf of Canadian metal to the holy fields of Wacken.”

PROFANER will now move on to perform at the international battle at Wacken Open Air taking place from August 4-6 to represent Canada among 30 other participating countries. Full details here. PROFANER will be defending Canada’s world title after Vesperia’s win last year. In the last three years of Canada’s participation, they have produced two world champions, Vesperia (2015) (video) and Crimson Shadows (2013) (video).
In addition to their win, PROFANER will receive a drummer prize pack from Los Cabos Drumsticks that includes 12 pairs of sticks of their choosing, a stick bag, a practice pad, and other Los Cabos Drumsticks swag plus automatic eligibility for endorsement (full details here). Wacken Metal Battle Canada is part of an international competition where over a hundred band’s from across the country battle each other for one to be selected and join over 30 other countries for an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air, which has been taking place in Wacken , Germany for the last 26 years. Oshawa’s Vesperia (2014 winners – video at Wacken), Toronto’s Crimson Shadows (2013 winners – video at Wacken) and Montreal’s Mutank (2014 winners – video at Wacken) have had that honour playing in front of thousands. Featuring eleven fist pounding tracks of dynamic vocal performances from lead vocalist Chris Szarota and bassist Dan Ayers, along with a showcase of mind bending guitar solos, heavy riffs and blistering drumming fury. Toronto, ON’sSLUDGEHAMMER are proud to unleash their debut full length album ‘The Fallen Sun’ officially out now as of June 10th. The debut album is the follow up their 2014 EP ‘Organ Harvester’ and was self-produced by the band plus mixed by guitarist Tyler Williams along with mastering done by world renowned producer & engineer Lasse Lammert (Gloryhammer, Alestorm, Teramaze) at LSD Studio in Germany.

About:
Sludgehammer is a five piece Canadian metal band formed in 2013. The band began with guitarist Jeff Wilson and drummer Fernando Villalobos jamming together, which quickly resulted in writing songs and searching for a full line up. Their search led to vocalist Chris Szarota, who possessed an astonishing vocal ferocity and bassist and vocalist Dan Ayers, who passed the audition as a bassist and also revealed a golden voice. Thus, the first incarnation of Sludgehammer was formed.

The four members worked hard over the next few months to put together a demo, which was released at the band’s first gig on November 22nd, 2013. The demo was well received even though it was completely self-recorded and the gig offers kept on coming, along with new fans.

With the success of the demo, the band knew that it was time to step things up and hired producer Christian Anderson for their 2014 release, ‘Organ Harvester’. During the writing sessions, the band decided that Chris and Dan should share vocal duties for this record, as Dan’s voice had been absent from the demo. The dual vocals proved to be a force to be reckoned with and on August 11th, 2014 ‘Organ Harvester’ was released to rave reviews.

‘Organ Harvester’ gained both new fans and better shows, gathering serious momentum and solid name among the metal community. However by 2015, after playing many gigs with the ‘Organ Harvester’ material it became very obvious that the fans were hungry for more. The band began writing more songs for the next release and kept playing gigs, which led them to guitarist Tyler Williams. Tyler was working as a sound man at the Atria in Oshawa, ON where Sludgehammer was playing, and after their performance, Tyler approached the band. They set up a jam and in July 2015, Tyler Williams joined Sludgehammer.

The new five piece line up produced a much fuller sound as Jeff and Tyler began working together. The old songs were given new life and badass new material was being written for their next release, titled ‘The Fallen Sun’. The new songs featured dynamic vocal performances from Dan and Chris, mind bending guitar solos, heavy riffs and blistering drumming. As the songs started to pile up, Sludgehammer discussed recording a full length album. Tyler suggested that they record at his studio, Monolithic Productions. The band set up shop there and are now ready to unleash ‘The Fallen Sun’ for release on June 10, 2016.
