Unleashing their earth-shattering album “Seismic” this past November, Vancouver’s Without Mercy has a new music video for their track “I Break The Chain” via its premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

“With this track, we pose the question of morality and becoming docile to the everyday routine. The chain that connects us and bounds us to a routine monotonous existence. The ignoring of atrocities just to keep the assembly line moving, ‘Don’t rock the boat’ mentality. What does it take to break from that chain and what would it look like?” adds the band.

Without Mercy’s latest behemoth features nine assaulting grooving death metal tracks that even include special guests Jeff Loomis (Arch Enemy) on opening track “Thunderbird” and Chris Broderick (Act of Defiance) on “Disinfect The Soul”.

Distributed by Bloodblast Distribution (powered by Nuclear Blast), “Seismic” follows the band’s 2016 EP “Moucchido”. The vast majority of the material for “Seismic” was written and rewritten multiple times over the past four years. Honed and tightened over tours and live performances, Without Mercy were unwilling to place “filler” to enhance anything. They came at this album with the best of everything they had after their inspirations were doing the same. The band shares their thoughts on the full length:

Follow The Shadow With Grimmreaper’s New Single “North Star” Off “The Tragedy of Being”

The third single leading up to the release of Grimmreaper’s debut album “The Tragedy of Being” is upon us; “North Star” comes forward as a cold, calculated, and meticulously crafted and can be heard via its premiere on SpaceUntravel’s YouTube channel HERE.

“The Tragedy of Being”, resulted from personal events in Logan Grimm’s life in which he saw his mind being blown to the cosmos, and found that he was drifting. In that drifting, this initial record was created. The drive to carry on against all odd is the theme for the single, as he explains:

“You need to rekindle yourself to move forward in life. Aim toward the highest thing you can conceptualize. You will not get it right the first time, but you must have an aim. You may think of aiming yourself towards a guide in the sky, the north star. But you’re not smart enough to know where the north star is, so you’ll aim for the south because of your ignorance. This is still a good path moving forward because you have decided to move. Your aim will come more into focus as you move.”

It has been a long process to get this solo record ready, and Grimm couldn’t be more excited to finally get it into the ears of metal fans everywhere. The album is a concept album that goes through the default conditions of life, tragedy, and suffering, and the options they present, nihilism and resentment, or transcendence and courage.

“The Tragedy of Being” is Grimmreaper’s debut album, and the solo project has been described as mixing technical styles like those of Dragonforce and Meshuggah with mainstream styles like Bullet For My Valentine and Five Finger Death Punch. It’s a dark record with many twists and turns, but never boring. The album is a journey through different tastes of metal, and while it’s meant to be enjoyed from start to finish, each song stands strong on its own.

The planetary and abstract album art represents the chaotic nature of the psyche, unknowable. Recommended for fans of Meshuggah, Dragonforce, and Devin Townsend.

The full release of “The Tragedy of Being” is out in March 2021.

Logan Grimm is an ambitious young artist seeking to take on the world, and the creator of Grimmreaper. He has developed an intense backstory for a multimedia project that explores the very human realities of tragedy and suffering, and the choices they present, from nihilism and resentment to transcendence and courage. In the process of this, he has crafted music that fuses the influences of highly technical bands like Dragonforce and Meshuggah with the work of more mainstream names such as Five Finger Death Punch and Bullet For My Valentine.

A sizzling cauldron of scatter-brained prog-metal insanity helmed by guitarist/vocalist Eric Thorfinnson, Toronto’s Autocatalytica unleashed their latest album “Powerclashing Maximalism” this past October. The LP is the band’s third and it explores all corners of Autocatalytica’s sound in a tight 36-minute runtime over eight tracks. A more mature listen, the full length continues the expressive outlet for Thorfinnson’s abstract angst and penchant for everything over the top. Thorfinnson has always drawn inspiration from a vast collage of different artists resulting in a sound that is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions. Autocatalytica was formed as a solo project in 2009. From The Dillinger Escape Plan to The Mars Volta, to Bjork, to Devin Townsend, to 20th-century composer Bela Bartok, Autocatalytica‘s sound is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions.

Upon moving to Boston to study at Berklee in 2010, Thorfinnson recruited guitarist Erik Sorensen, Drummer Emmett Ceglia, and bassist Jon Anderson to flesh out Autocatalytica’s line-up. Over the next few years the band played its first shows and in April of 2012 released their debut EP “Horror Vacui”.

The group relocated to Brooklyn in the fall of 2012 and immediately began to rehearse and write a full-length record. In June 2013 the group began recording its eponymous LP, while continually playing shows along the east coast of the US. They released their Debut LP “Autocatalytica” in June 2014, and continued performing shows in and around Brooklyn, all the while furiously composing a follow-up record.

In early 2015, Thorfinnson found out he was going to have to move back to his native Toronto, ON, but despite this, the band decided to finish writing and recording the songs for their follow-up LP. In October 2015, tragedy struck the group when Guitarist Erik Sorensen suddenly passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition. Despite reeling from this massive trauma and coming to terms with Thorfinnson’s impending relocation, the group finished tracking drums to their next LP, and played their final show as a Brooklyn-based incarnation on Nov. 21st, 2015.

Thorfinnson spent most of 2016 toiling away at the tracking and mixing of this next record at home in his native Oakville, Ontario, and on December 9th, 2016 the group released the LP “Vicissitudes”, a 16-track maximalist genre-gauntlet of sporadic insanity.

Over the next few years, Thorfinnson spent most of his time on other projects, as the future of Autocatalytica remained uncertain. In 2018, he decided there was still more music to be had from Autocatalytica, and teamed up with his friend and drummer Neilroy Miranda (of local Jazz-math stalwarts “Dog Drive Mantis”) to rehearse and record a new album. The idea for this record was to be a much more collaborative effort than previous releases that had seen Thorfinnson handing all vocal and most guitar duties. The record “Powerclashing Maximalism” features a smattering of collaborators including Parliament Owls / Telomere’s Devlin Flynn, Northern Heirs’ Scott Carruthers, and Plethora’s Gary Walsh to name a few. While at this time Autocatalytica exists solely as a recording project, but no one knows what the future holds!

Grimmreaper continues to tantalize listeners with the second single “Catastrophe of the Tragic Melancholies”, which is taken off the upcoming album “The Tragedy of Being”.

Calculated and cold, yet maintaining a glimmer of heartfelt hope, Grimmreaper wants to take listeners on an emotional and spiritual wave, from hopelessness in the pounding drums and echoing screams to happiness found in the grooves of the music and the hope of the lyrics.

Lyrically, Grimmreaper writes about what seems to be the default condition to consciousness, suffering. Humans seem to be presented with a world rife with torment and agony. The single, “Catastrophe of the Tragic Melancholies” attempt to make contact with Grimm’s shadow, from a Jungian perspective. He explains further:

“This is a naked look into the worst parts of my soul, my shadow, the parts of my soul and fantasies that I want to pretend don’t exist. Carl Jung popularized the idea of the shadow, the part of yourself you don’t want to see. Your dark fantasies, your malevolence, the things you turn a blind eye to, those make up the shadow, in a broad sense. Without Mercy have been teasing their upcoming album over the past weeks and the time is now for worldwide audiences to bask in the glory that is “Seismic”.

The vast majority of the material for “Seismic” was written and rewritten multiple times. Honed and tightened over tours and live performances, Without Mercy were unwilling to place “filler” to enhance anything. They came at this album with the best of everything they had after our inspirations were doing the same. The band shares their excitement for the release:

For this album, Without Mercy wrote each song as an individual first and then grouped several songs together. Autocatalytica is a bubbling cauldron of scatter-brained prog-metal insanity helmed by guitarist/vocalist Eric Thorfinnson. The newest release for the band “Powerclashing Maximalism” was recently released last month on October 16th. The LP is the band’s third and it explores all corners of Autocatalytica’s sound in a tight 36-minute runtime over eight tracks, from the Meshuggah-esque stomp of “Borndun” to the Jazzy Math Rock of “Cheggo”. While at this time Autocatalytica exists solely as a recording project, no one knows what the future holds!

Today, in support of the album, the band is sharing their latest lyric video for the track “Zippler”. A song written about the illusion of free will, it splits down the middle in the vein of the likes of Protest the Hero and the Mars Volta, it’s zippy, groovy, and has got some chaos thrown in for good measure.

Formed as a solo project in 2009, as an expressive outlet for Thorfinnson’s abstract angst and penchant for everything over the top. Without Mercy has been described as, “A cacophony of extreme metal vocal styles accompany some fairly interesting soloing” and honestly, Bloodblast knows what’s up in all of these fields. The band sets out to once again prove the critics right, this time with the album “Seismic”.

The third single being released from the upcoming LP is “Uprooted”, the final track out of nine, holds the crown as the oldest on the list. This song has gone through more than a dozen changes and is more than 6 years old. Without Mercy cites:

“Easily the song that faced the most changes and evolution throughout the course of this writing. Uprooted is a song that we carried with us through tours and live performances never really satisfied with its end result until now. We shelved it, and then brought it down and dusted it off. We gave it an overhaul and in the end, it’s become something absolutely crushing to us.”

The tracks on this album are the product of touring and rewriting each piece until the band is satisfied. There were lengthy discussions amongst all of them as they decided which tunes to keep and which to cast aside for this release. The evolution of the lyrical content from previous material also brought them more information as to what should be kept and what should be discarded.

Grimmreaper Announces Concept Album “The Tragedy of Being” And First Single “Resent”

“The Tragedy of Being” Due Out February 2021

Grimmreaper comes from the mind of Logan Grimm, formed as a result of learning that he could write music. This whole project came from watching a psychologist on YouTube, Jordan Peterson, talk about the idea of slaying dragons in your life, cleaning your room, taking responsibility, and reaching your potential.

Peterson explained stories in the Bible and traditions of ancient cultures that shook Grimm from his cynicism on those matters, and he found the ability to express his ideas. He went from not playing the guitar to having a metal album written in about 18 months completely by himself. He explains the album in his own words:

“In the album, I make the final argument that life is suffering, but you should make the unlikely and illogical decision to make a pact or covenant with the highest conception of good and truth. You should treat this covenant like a relationship with a guiding force that, ultimately, is your best bet against misery and unnecessary suffering. You could call that idea of the highest good as the universe, or truth, or the stars. I choose to call it God.”

The single “Resent” was the first song Grimm ever recorded in his life, it took about two years to finish. It is a nasty song, going into the resentment that can accrue in yourself from losing in life. Failing, being low on the social hierarchy, not being wanted… these things can easily and quickly bring you to the conclusion that life is not worth pursuing, and more than that, that existence itself is corrupt beyond repair. A losing game. A zero-sum catastrophe.

Fans of Trivium, In Flames, and Meshuggah are invited to succumb to a grey world, where nihilism prevails when you hear “Resent” via its premiere on TheCircle Pit YouTube Channel HERE.
