Italian melodic death Embryo is sharing the first glimpse of brutality from their forthcoming fifth album “A Vivid Shade on Misery”, which features the band’s recruitment of international drumming powerhouse George Kollias (Nile) for its recording. Due out on March 17th, 2023 via Rockshots Records, Embryo shares its first single “Darkest Lights” accompanied by a music video. The track is melodic, but with an unforgettable groove.

“A Vivid Shade on Misery” follows the band’s 2017’s “A Step Beyond Divinity” (Art Gates Records), 2015’s Self-Titled (logic(il)logic Records) that featured Fleshgod Apocalypse’s drummer Francesco Paoli, 2010’s “No God Slave” and their 2006 debut “Chaotic Age”.

Since the band’s inception, Embryo has toured across Europe with Melechesh, Keep of Kalessin, Tribulation, Nile, Immolation, Ragnarok, Monuments of Misanthropy, and Suffocation along with performing on festivals such as Masters of Rock (CZ), and Total Metal Festival (Italy).

Embryo began writing their fifth offering in 2020 with George Kollias and entered the Domination Studio in July 2021 with producer Simone Mularoni, and engineer Simone Bertozzi.

Monolithic, intense, powerful, technical, and melodic this new album features eight brand new tracks and is another concept album like its predecessor “A Step Beyond Divinity”. The band is inspired by historical Italian figures of the Renaissance era and their tormented lives, their absolute genius, and the gifts they gave to the world. While the previous album “A Step Beyond Divinity” was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci, this new work is totally inspired by Michelangelo Merisi alias Caravaggio, an Italian painter active in Rome for most of his artistic life.

“With “A Vivid Shade on Misery” we want to have listeners dive into our world by giving them brutal and atmospheric music melted together in the way we love to do plus having Kollias drum on this new album, one of the best drummers in the world, is just an absolute honour. Overall, fans will find this album has the “Embryo” matrix, there’s no doubt about that. It will be a more direct record and its songs make up a pattern that takes the listener on a journey through torments and anxieties, but which at the same time gives him pure energy.” adds the band.

From the band’s first album “Chaotic Age” (2006) to today, Embryo‘s music has evolved over the years. On the first record, they were more brutal and messier, now their compositions are much more “thought out” and brilliant. If they had to use one word to describe their compositional evolution they would say “sharp”.

About: After a couple of self-produced works and a first album (“Chaotic Age”) Embryo found its sound and recorded “No God Slave” (2010) with producer Simone Mularoni. The album received very good reviews and led the band to play new gigs in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy and be part of Kung Fu Factory’s Supremacy MMA videogame soundtrack with 2 songs. In 2014 Embryo first recorded a promo at Atomic Stuff Studio with Oscar Burato, then, in May, the band recorded the new self-titled cd at Domination Studio with Simone Mularoni. During the summer they played the main stage at Masters of Rock in the Czech Republic and Total Metal Festival in Italy. In October Embryo signed a deal with logic(il)logic Records for the release of the album and the reissue of “No God Slave” with some bonus tracks. In December the band made a little tour in Eastern Europe. The new album “Embryo” came out on the 10th of February 2015. The album received great reviews worldwide and Embryo started a European tour in May with Melechesh, Keep of Kalessin, and Tribulation. After a great show at MetalFest in the Czech Republic in July, the band joined Nile and Suffocation for the second part of their European tour in September. In 2016 the band has been part of the second leg of the “What Should Not Be Unearthed” Nile tour with Melechesh and Mithridatic. Embryo finished the recordings of the new album in January at Domination Studios again with guru Simone Mularoni. The band played at the 2017 edition of MetalFest in the Czech Republic on Sunday, June 4th, and signed a deal with Art Gates Records for the release of the 4th studio album “A Step Beyond Divinity” which came out on the 27th of October 2017 in Spain and the 24th of November 2017 in the rest of the world. The album has been enthusiastically reviewed entering the 2017 best albums of the year charts in various webzines all over the world. In November 2019 the band joined “The Last Atonement European tour” supporting Immolation, Ragnarok, and Monuments of Misanthropy for all the shows. In December the band released a free download digital EP including the new song Misguided legacy and three live songs taken from a live show of the band. In 2020 the famous drummer George Kollias (Nile) joined Embryo in the writing of the new album. The band entered again Domination Studio in July 2021 to record the brand new fifth album “A Vivid Shade On Misery”, which will be released in early 2023, anticipated by the video of the new song “Darkest Lights”. Quebec death metal Upon Your Grave is sharing with fans their latest shredding playthrough for their “From Beyond” off their recently released EP “Gold & Decay” mixed and mastered by producer Chris Donaldson of Cryptopsy. “From Beyond talks about the event of encountering a being naturally bound from outer space, while we first explore those endless confines after discovering space travel. A monstrosity unbound by our human conceptions of organic possibilities. The vocals range has it all in this one. from gutturals to high pitches, following grandiose agencements on guitars and epic melodic riffing providing a satisfying experience for the ears. All culminating in an epic solo for icing on the cake. It’s a song we had fun creating and enjoy it more and more each time we play it.”

Upon Your Grave‘s latest offering features five tracks that each show off the capabilities of this band that has been around since 2009. Over the years, they have experimented with their sound and are now steady and impressive. About:
Established in 2009, Quebec, Canada-based death metal act, Upon Your Grave, is finally back swinging.

In 2019, at the dawn of the band’s 10th anniversary, Sim Diamond, Alex Bussieres and Jordan Jolicoeur grasped the opportunity given by the lockdown to start writing and rehearsing for a new album. This is their first effort since the Eponym debut album back in 2013. During their time away from Upon Your Grave, each member stayed active by releasing albums with other projects like Vibrant Heels and Universal Minds. Lead guitarist Sim Diamond also got to be part of Sam Dunn’s Shredders of Metal season 1 and made it all the way to the finals in Toronto. Now adding two new members to the mix, Sebastien Gagné on drums and Yan Pelletier on bass, two good friends from the local band Scars Of Disgrace, the band had found their perfect lineup to go forward.

With the help of a successful GoFundMe campaign, the band was able to go record a new EP with Chris Donaldson of Cryptopsy in March of 2022. this collaboration was the perfect fit that would elevate their performances to a more genuine and aggressive sound. Incorporating crushing vocals blended with catchy melodies, bad-ass guitar riffs and memorable solos that remind us of bands such as Daath, Lamb of God, Sylosis and even All Shall Perish.

Gold & Decay proves that work ethic and perseverance can truly refine a band’s sound to what they had always been striving for. This new release will be a fresh start for great things to come and is only the beginning of a flourishing career.

“Kicking off with a forty-second acoustic intro – ‘Revived’ then immediately goes into ‘From Beyond’ which is a chugging banger of a tune with some serious guitar work and loads of double kick drum action. ‘Pandora’ is more aggressive with a riff Slayer would kill for and watch how it slows to a heavy grind halfway through before things get serious again on ‘Supremacy’ which is rapid and vicious with a superb solo from Sim Diamond, reminding of Rob Dukes era Exodus. ‘Transcend’ is not hippy, trippy as the title would suggest instead it’s all-out brutality with a sing-a-long chorus! Chicago’s neo-classical melodic death outfit BURNED IN EFFIGY unleashed their latest album this past January 28th. The full-length follows their debut EP “Terrestrial”, which was all instrumental. With the addition of vocalist Mark “Smedy” Smedbron, the fury of a new monster was born for the next chapter of the band. “Rex Mortem” was recorded with guitarists Vito Bellino and Brad Dose, who soon after parted ways and saw live guitarists Steve Bacakos and Mike Hisson take over shredding duties. The three new members join co-founding members Eddie Dec (Drums) and Matt Watkins (Bass) to push forward a new front supporting this epic record that has been called by Brutalism.com “One of the first strong albums of 2022…”.

Today, in support of the record, Burned In Effigy has teamed up with NoCleanSinging to premiere their latest band playthrough video for their most melodically and harmonically complex song track “Treachery”.

“It expresses its themes in multiple keys and includes lots of counterpoints, including sections with 3-way counterpoint between the guitars and bass. The vocal chants throughout the song hammer home the lyrical themes of divine right and corruption. The king aims to present an image to his subjects as a just and noble ruler, while he plots to spread his treachery across the land.” adds bassist Matt Watkins.

“Rex Mortem” is a high-energy recording, but also diverse. It takes elements from multiple subgenres within metal, mainly melodic death and progressive while infusing neoclassical elements into each track. No two tracks sound the same. Burned In Effigy skillfully and tastefully changed keys and time signatures throughout, so the feel of their music is constantly shifting, but also smoothly flows between each section. Lyrically, the album is the introduction of a tale of a tyrannical king’s rule and demise, including some other minor themes and stories from mythology and classic literature.

“We are psyched to present our debut album, Rex Mortem, a catalog of the first chapter of the band. This has been in the works for a long time and we couldn’t be more pleased with how it has turned out. The songs vary in complexity and intensity and demonstrate our growth as a band since its inception. Listeners will hear influences such as The Black Dahlia Murder and The Human Abstract, combining our love for death metal and progressive/neo-classical metal. The vocals are gritty and tense and the lyrics emphasize this with dark tales inspired by mythology, history, and classic literature. The Design Abstract melds together narrative sci-fi with Gothenburg-esque melodic death metal, resulting in ambiguous concept albums that sound completely different from other artists in the genre. Their latest album “Metemtechnosis” continues the “Technotheism” (2021) storyline after an indeterminate amount of time in the universe. The band compares this new album to the last, and lets us know what’s coming next:

“Many people had many positive things to say about “Technotheism” upon its release, and we feel that “Metemtechnosis” is a worthy successor to it. Compositionally, we have refined many elements and parts of the processes, and from a technical standpoint, we have really stepped up a lot. Those who wanted to hear more of the killer guitar work will assuredly not be disappointed. “Metemtechnosis” also carries on the story of “Technotheism” in part two of what will be a trilogy. Everything that was present in “Technotheism” has been brought back in more compelling ways, and the performances are more on-point than ever before.”

Similar to “Technotheism”, the tracks were written as necessary to touch on the major story beats of the album; an overarching science-fiction story about a far future where technological advancement puts into question a lot of things taken for granted, like the definition of humanity, individuality, progress, and the line between all of these things. After the third album in the trilogy is released, The Design Abstract will move to a different fictional setting, but the music will continue to experiment with the elements they use in new and innovative ways.

All songs on “Metemtechnosis” were written and performed by Voiicide (vocals/bass/programming), Logan Mayhem (guitars/modular synthesis), and Matt Ngo (guitars). It was produced, mixed, and mastered by Voiicide at Abstrakted Records and the album artwork was done by Yuta Shimpo.

The Design Abstract has a sound that is distinctively theirs and is recommended for fans of Soilwork, Septicflesh, and Divine Disorder.

The Design Abstract is a 3-piece Symphonic Melodic Death Metal band from Kitchener-Waterloo, ON, Canada. New EP “Aspect of Creation” Out Now!

Vancouver’s Param-Nesia unleashed their new EP “Aspect of Creation” upon the world earlier this June. The five-track EP is groovy and captivating with each song flowing from one to the next. Compared to the first EP “The Beginning” (2019), this new offering is a big step up in production and quality and will definitely get listeners rowdy. Meshing melody and brutality, they tell wild tales intended to take the listener on a journey. The band explains in more detail:

“It is more focused and balanced in its direction. The overall sound isn’t one specific thing. Some songs have a more melodic, triumphant vibe, while others are more somber, slower groove. But that’s the fun part, each one is a testament to the moment it was conceived, and a reflection of the evolving musical inspirations of each band member at that time.”

One of the lead singles off “Aspect of Creation” is the track “Forsaken” and today, drummer Derek Hill is showcasing his pounding fury with his latest playthrough along with British Columbia’s monstrous Rockies as the backdrop.

“This playthrough was filmed off the Squamish Valley Logging Road, in Squamish, BC. I had this location in my mind for a long time because I spend a lot of time in Squamish Kiteboarding around all the glacier mountains. I’ve always wanted to play drums in a place where I felt very connected with nature, so I told my friend and videographer Darren Potts, along with longtime friend and bandmate Matt Burnham about the plan and they helped turn it into reality.” adds Hill.

Italy’s Reality Grey‘s fourth album “Beneath This Crown” was released just this past May via Blood Blast Distribution, powered by Nuclear Blast and Believe Digital. Offering a sonic assault of extreme melodic metal over the course of thirteen relentless tracks, the record follows 2014’s “Define Redemption” (Bakerteam/Scarlet Records).

On this new record, fans are treated to the band’s “most innovative and modern record we have ever made”. They went beyond everything they have done in the past both musically and lyrically. Reality Grey was able to develop their most experimental side.

“The album has very different feels throughout the track listing; every song is a stand-alone story as we never liked to copy ourselves on and on. It touches on the social tragedy we’re living in today, with the richest and most powerful people on earth exerting control over everyone else’s life. Divide and conquer, then get richer and richer.

Salt Lake City’s Arsenic Addiction’s released their fourth album “XIX” in September 2019, and in support of the record, they released the visually stunning video “Fire” featuring UTAH’s salt flats as a backdrop. Today, the band is excited to present their next breathtaking video filmed and directed once again by Brian Medeiros for their track “Maleficium” and this time they have changed altitudes to hit the snow-capped peaks of UTAH’S mountains.

The band adds about the track:

“The working title for this song was Malleus Maleficarum, it translates to The Hammer of Witches. A book and nickname for a clergyman who was discredited by the catholic church about the finding, extermination, and torture procedures for witches.
Exodus 22:18 ‘ Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live ‘

The song itself is pretty straightforward as it is about patriarchal ideals against not only women, but anyone who dares to love differently, dress differently, and act out of the accepted norm. This song was written very specifically for our vocalist Lady Arsenic and her experiences and accusations of ‘being a witch’ in the sense of a seductress, whore, etc., for being an openly polyamorous woman, treated as though she has control over the thoughts and feelings of others and that she is somehow responsible for their actions (WITCHCRAFT!). It’s petty martyrdom, but it was very cathartic to write”

The one-man act of Toronto’s Malice Divine brings to you the third and final single “Triumphant Return” from the upcoming debut self-titled album.

“Triumphant Return” is the least dark song on the self-titled and also the most uplifting song on the album overall. It still retains the aggressiveness that is present throughout the other eight songs on the offering.

Ric Galvez explains the track in his own words:

“The last of the three singles to be released before the full album, Triumphant Return is by far the most uplifting song on the album. As the song title implies, I was aiming to create a very triumphant feeling from the music with this song. The lyrics of the song further amplify the feeling of triumph that is inherent to this song, dealing with the theme of overcoming all obstacles that you face in life and bouncing back stronger than ever.”

The lyrics explored on the self-titled album are actually quite personal and deal with Ric Galvez’s thoughts and feelings regarding his life experiences. They are an outlet for self-expression, while also exploring topics such as spirituality and psychology with an underlying theme of personal empowerment.

The self-titled debut album was recorded at Monolithic Productions in Oshawa, Ontario by Tyler Williams beginning in January 2020. After the recording process had concluded, the album was re-amped and mixed by Tyler Williams and then Mastered by Lasse Lammert of LSD-Studio in Germany. This album is an excellent example of time during the Covid-19 pandemic being put to good use.

Melodic and captivating with a good blend of heavy styles, Malice Divine is recommended for fans of Death, Dissection, and Immortal.

Ric Galvez has played in local bands previously and was a contestant on Banger TV’s Shredders of Metal Seasons 1 & 2.

Ric Galvez has a major in music from York University and through Malice Divine he shows off his prowess across instruments. His lyrics are inspired by psychology, and spirituality, as well as personal experiences especially those involving the overcoming of obstacles and hardships using the resulting verses as a form of empowerment.

The first offering from Malice Divine, a self-titled full length, comes in 2021 with Dylan Gowan (Vesperia, Iomair) playing session drums. There are plans to flesh out a live lineup for Divine Malice when the time is right.

What people can expect from seeing Malice Divine live is highly aggressive black and death metal inspired music with shreddy and virtuosic guitar solos adding a melodic layer that isn’t common in the genre.

Malice Divine’s self-titled debut album is due out February 19, 2021.

Delivering relentless brutal melodic death metal since 2007, [EVERTRAPPED]intentionally wrote their band name with enclosed brackets to signify the trappings of modern life for all of us and how people, despite their best attempts to break out of the mold are still affixed to a simple controlled existence and futility.

Members of the band bring together their collective experience from the Montreal metal scene to create their heavy brand of death metal. The guitarists Frederick Dupuis (ex-Daggerfalls) and Vincent Benoit hammer out raw guitar while drummer Eric Lemire (ex-Apocalypsys, ex-Ice Castle) pummels the drums. Their versatile frontman James Brookes (ex-Ammonia, ex-One Final Moment, Continuum) easily alternates between strong clear vocals and low bellowing screams giving listeners the illusion of more than one vocalist. John Yates (ex-AraPacis) weaves together each song with his driving bass lines to keep the punishing tracks energy at an all time high.

Lyrics are intentionally slightly abstract to lure fans to draw their own conclusions despite a perceived understanding of the tracks. Themes for the music revolve around personal turmoil and even stringing together the image of a future where the world is on the brink of an apocalypse.

The band’s influences range from Death Metal to Melodic Death primarily, along with some classic thrash and speed metal, which explains their technicality and diversity sonically. Live, the band is a whirlwind of aggression and sonically abrasive, yet sporadically melodic vocally and instrumentally.

About the album and track by track explained by Evertrapped.

Under The Deep is an exploration of the deepest reaches of human madness. Not clinical madness, but simply the darkest regions of the soul and the blackest part of the human heart from a mind found to be socially functional, but is really way too far gone. And thus it seeks to explore what is underneath the deepest depth, hence no matter how deep you descend there’s always another layer that can be torn away.

Arise From The Ashes: A depiction of someone who has actually reached the bottom, so their rise from there so to speak. Like the king of their own universe broken by all clawing it’s back but fueled by an ever consuming hatred.

Underneath The Deep: A personal look at how a person can only be fucked up by someone else for too long until they break. But this takes you to a point where you now can’t come back.

Palace Of Injustice: A stab at anyone blinded by the indoctrination of any institution and their ultimate demise that likely follows due to their ignorance towards it. However, it does aim more at the disgust of the institutions themselves and not so much the ignorance of the people.

Hypnotized By Hatred: Another personal reflection, but in this case more a person who has been made to believe that all they do is wrong. So it brings up the sense where if you tell someone enough times that they are shit, then eventually they will just believe it. And in this case someone who becomes a very dark god loathing individual because it takes them to a point where they think it’s hysterical.

Blood Of The Fallen: This is set in a horror like context although it not some zombie tribute. It simply laughs at how we place so much importance on the memory of the dead yet never bat an eye at the reality of human suffering which we ourselves cause.

Lethal District: Somewhat of a post apocalyptic view of the surviving factions of humanity that instill themselves as the powers that be, and thus cast out the unclean, unworthy, and so forth. And therefore it sheds light on the madness and revolt of the unwanted.

Burning Through Vengeance: This is a straight up rebel song. A certain arrogant fuck you to a society that rejects you, but you still know that you know better than them. So instead you’ll bide your time and watch them hilariously screw themselves over.

Reaper: As the title suggests, an end of the line type song. In a certain way captures the essence of[EVERTRAPPED] in terms of the inescapable event that is death.

Embrace The End: This also goes more or less as the title suggests. This is another song for the apocalypse but more at the actual hour of the end itself. A look at almost coming to terms with the fact that it was likely the fault of humanity and embracing the acceptance of such evil.
