Calgary’s Woodhawk are at it again with a new album being released in November! With it comes their first single “Weightless Light” is premiering via The Sludgelord HERE.

The track comes from “Violent Nature”, the band’s sophomore album, which steps away from the science fiction themes evident on their previous release 2017’s “Beyond The Sun” and takes a more therapeutic turn, as the band explains:

“On previous efforts, we wrote from a science fiction standpoint. It’s where we all were at, at the point in our lives and reflected what we wanted to say and represent. Now, we believe in honesty and find the therapeutic side of music. This album has been an expressive honest view into our lives over the past 2 years.”

Putting a lot of time and production into the new album with producer Jesse Gander (Rain City Recorders), Woodhawk has worked really hard to capture energy and emotion. Based on insomnia, their first single “Weightless Light” has an intimate meaning for vocalist/guitarist Turner, as he explains:

“The song stems from my struggle to sleep for a few months over the fall of 2018. I would wake up every night at the same time and lay awake staring at nothing. My mind would race and inhibit me from sleeping, no matter what. So I would lay in this state of almost non-existence where I couldn’t tell if I was asleep, awake, alive or dead. It was an odd feeling of vulnerability. To pass the time, I would get up and play guitar in the middle of the night, until I felt I could attempt to go back to sleep for the last 45 minutes before my alarm.”

It’s a feeling many have experienced and Woodhawk draws empathy with this forceful track. For fans of Black Sabbath, The Sword, and Clutch, “Violent Nature” is available for pre-order via the band’s Bandcamp.

About:
From the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains hails Calgary, AB’s rock n’ roll trio Woodhawk. Masters of the straight-ahead riff rock, Woodhawk blends classic rock influences of Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy with smooth grooves, cranked amps, and heavy-hitting drums. The coalescence of melodious vocals, catchy riffs, and dynamic instrumentation creates a vast soundscape for the listener to explore. With lyrical themes of science fiction and sorcery to more recent themes of struggles and triumph, Woodhawk wears their heart on their sleeve.

Woodhawk began in 2014 with the release of a self-titled EP, followed by the critically acclaimed full length “Beyond The Sun” in 2017. A melodically rich and varied album, steeped in science fiction themes and packed with undeniably catchy riffs, “Beyond the Sun” cemented Woodhawk’s status as a desert rock band with unlimited potential to break through into the mainstream. Rather than taking their freewheelin’ brand of lyrical chrono-metal into the comfortable bracket of factory-produced R’n’R, Woodhawk elected to explore the road less traveled.

Returning to Rain City Recorders in Vancouver, BC during February 2019, Woodhawk worked with Jesse Gander (Anciients, Bison, 3 Inches of Blood, Japandroids, Pack AD) to record their sophomore album “Violent Nature”. Over the course of 2 weeks, Woodhawk tracked their strongest effort yet, producing songs that address the struggles of mental health straight on, and laying it all on the line. Woodhawk’s new material abandons the world of fantasy in pursuit of emotional authenticity and self-discovery.

Our heroes’ quest for clarity and independence has landed them on the precipice of ambition and accomplishment. It’s a true turning point of entry for Woodhawk’s lofty yet assertive life-goals. The elegant anthems and pulsing chords of the next phase in the group’s sonic evolution can scarcely be contained. Grounded with one foot in the present and another in the dynamic future, Woodhawk’s outlook is as boundless as their command of their genre. With the new album due out on November 2, 2019, their intelligence, inventiveness and an uncanny knack for generating timeless tunes are ready to flood the senses and tug at the spirit with an easy-going nonchalance that embraces the audience with confidence and jean-jacketed arms.

Woodhawk features guitarist Turner Midzain, bassist Mike Badmington, and drummer Kevin Nelson. They have taken the stage at the Commodore Ballroom, Sled Island, and UP+DT, in addition to multiple Canadian tours. They have also shared the stage in support of Airbourne, Truckfighters, Elder, and The Shrine. Woodhawk has their sights set on touring North America and Europe to bring their highly energetic and captivating live performance to new audiences.

“The riffs are so catchy you’ll be humming them long after you remove headphones and the songs are so good you will be craving the next chance you get to sit down and listen to them again.” – The Sludgelord – Beyond The Sun Review (May 2017)

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – August 29, 2019

For fans of Mastodon, Tool, A Perfect Circle

Rockshots Records Signs Portugal’s BLAME ZEUS For Third Album “SEETHE” Out November 8th

Rockshots Records is proud to announce their latest signing of Portuguese progressive metallers BLAME ZEUS for the release of their third full length “SEETHE” on November 8, 2019.

With influences that range from blues to metal, their music can be described as an intense and heavy rock, but also with intimate and nostalgic ballads. Their line up features Sandra Oliveira, Tiago Lascasas, Paulo Silva, Celso Oliveira, and Ricardo Silveira.

Since forming in 2010, the band’s two previous releases “Identity’ (2014) (Raising Legends Records) and “Theory of Perception” (2017) have garnered much praise in their home country along with securing opening slots with bands Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, Cradle of Filth, Cellar Darling, R.A.M.P. among many others established acts. In 2018, they were invited to perform at Vagos Metal Fest, one of Portugal’s biggest heavy festivals.

The band adds:

“Our new upcoming album will still possess BZ’s genome, but it will bring some fresh features you’ve never seen in our work. It will be heavier, darker, more progressive, and it will make the fans submerge in a turmoil of strong feelings. Fans will certainly feel our same old vibe in the songs, but recognize it has been upgraded, with a more modern sound. We worked freely, with no strings attached, using new elements, making everything sound rhythmically, harmonically and melodically intertwined.  We have certainly not made things easier to ourselves, and had to evolve technically to be able to play and sing these new songs.”

and vocalist Sandra Oliveira also adds:

“‘SEETHE’ could very well be considered a conceptual album because the main theme of the songs is unexpressed anger, silent pain transformed into poetry. Its contradictory nature is the liberation of the soul, it’s letting go of that lump on your throat when you have something to say. Each song speaks of a particular situation where the silence and the numbness become a vehicle for action and freedom or even utmost despair.”

“SEETHE” is available for pre-order here.

KOSM is a progressive metal band hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada. Combining influences from Mastodon, Tool, and Gojira; their sound is dynamic and unquestionably lethal. Since their induction in 2016, they have been making their mark in Vancouver’s metal scene as an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Familiar to members of the progressive metal covenant, and playing with themes from the H.P. Lovecraft and Bloodborne universes; KOSM is quite unique and authentically its own being. Their first release, 2018’s “Cosmonaut” was an album loosely based on the Lovecraftian myth of Cthulhu and each song was meant to walk the listener through a story from beginning to end. Following this, the band recently plunged listeners into the dark universe of their Bloodborne video game inspired EP “Eyes On The Inside” unleashed on June 28th, 2019. The dark and agile record demonstrated KOSM‘s maturity in sound and was the first release that featured all members of the band contributing to the writing process.

Teaming up with GearGods.net, the progressive metal quintet are showcasing their latest band playthrough for their track ‘A Call Beyond’ off of “Eyes On The Inside”, which can be viewed at the following link here.

The band adds about writing the EP:

“We really set out to give people what they were asking of us, we all feel it’s going to be received incredibly well. On top of that, this is 100% for all the Bloodborne fans that trolled us into oblivion last year, so we hope that they love it just as much as the fans of progressive metal do! It’s heavier, trickier, and more concise with obvious nods to our biggest influences including Tool, Mastodon and Gojira.”

EP “Eyes On The Inside” is available on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music.

“The technical abilities of all band members blew my head off. The flow and continuity of the music is maintained from the first to the last note despite all the challenging progressiveness. It’s got more creativity crammed in 5 songs than some bands put in their entire discography. And it kills swiftly with no mercy. For all you waiting on that new Tool album, make this EP your warm up.” 9.5/10 – The Metal Observer

“If you love your prog chunkier and sludgier KOSM is right up your ally.  They are definitely one of the genre’s best kept secrets and lets not make them a secret anymore, okay?”  – Technical Music Review

“KOSM’s knack for creating concept albums has paid off yet again!” – The Music Below

“I am immediately impressed. “Yharnam” is the first track, and I am already thinking Otep, Epica and iwrestledabearonce. The lyrics are impactful, the flow of the song fits and I want to listen to the rest already. Jessie Grace, vocalist, is showing her talent from the get-go. Having such a strong female lead is really a treasure, and I can’t fault the song. It’s definitely my favourite track off of the EP. The lyrics are dynamic and descriptive, and well executed. If you haven’t played Bloodborne, then this song will make you want to…I loved this EP! Everything worked and came together. It was refreshing, powerful and I believe the band will go far.” – Midlands Metalheads

“Vancouver’s KOSM kick the door in with Cosmonaut, their monstrous full-length debut. Brace yourself for a satisfying trip through an exciting mountain range of cascading, meaty riffs, swelling rises, and heady drops, all led by the powerful, soaring vocals of the dynamic Jessie Grace. ” – Beatroute BC

“KOSM cite Tool, Gojira, and Mastodon as three of their main influences, and all three can be heard loud and clear on their new album, Cosmonaut. The technical, progressive musicianship of Tool meets the crushing grooves and rhythmic vocals of Gojira, and Mastodon’s ear for riffy, thunderous prog are all present on Cosmonaut, which features some of the most technical metal I’ve heard this year outside of, you know, technical death metal. ” – Decibel Magazine

It’s been a long time coming, with a band name like SLUDGEHAMMER, it was inevitable that the Toronto based quintet would be doing a cover version of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’. The two are a perfect pair up, which is demonstrated in the band’s new music video covering the track.

The band comments:

“After many drunken fan requests, many misspelled marquee billings and many hours spent researching the legalities. We at Sludgehammer are moderately delighted to release our Sledgehammer cover. Peter Gabriel is our band inspiration, he has influenced every riff, blast beat and vocal harmony that we’ve created. We hope this does him some justice we hope you enjoy this as much as we did.”

Teaming up with Decibel Magazine for the video’s premiere, SLUDGEHAMMER doing ‘Sledgehammer’ can be viewed at the following link: https://www.decibelmagazine.com/2019/07/04/video-premiere-sludgehammer-covers-peter-gabriel-you-know-which-song/

Those with an ear for Decapitated, Pantera, Lamb Of God, and Cannibal Corpse can dig into this slice of groovy progressive melodic death brutality.

BIO:

Since the release, their first full-length album, The Fallen Sun, Sludgehammer from Toronto, Canada have been riding a wave of great reviews for the record as well as their live show.

Originally formed in 2013 by Jeff Wilson (guitar) and Fernando Villalobos (drums), Sludgehammer’s initial lineup came together with the addition of Daniel Ayers (vocals/bass) and Christopher Szarota (vocals).  By the end of the year, they released a demo which gained considerable ground. 2014’s EP Organ Harvester introduced Dan Ayers as a co-vocalist, creating a unique sound that molded Sludgehammer into the heavy and groovy band it is today.

In 2016, the LP The Fallen Sun was released; fast and chunky it was well received by fans and the media. Unfortunately, after the release of that album, the band parted ways with Szarota and Josh Stephney was brought on board to complete the album cycle.

With the lineup finalized, Sludgehammer hit the road and laid waste to every stage they set foot on, showing their fans that they were now stronger than ever.  After a few successful tours in support of The Fallen Sun, it was time to start writing the next record which will be the first to feature Stephney on vocals. Sludgehammer is preparing to show their maturity by unleashing a second monstrous album “Antechamber” in 2019.

“Demonstrates all aspects of brutal music” – Heavy New York

“Enjoy almost 50 minutes of top-of-the-line melodic, furious and electrifying Groove Metal, courtesy of five Canadian metallers armed with their amazing sophomore album.” – Antichrist Mag

“Sludgehammer doesn’t fit neatly into the traditional death or groove metal box, as its diverse elements sets it apart from its peers… hooky riffs, catchy choruses and a perfect clean/growled vocal combination… Sludgehammer possesses loads of potential. Highly recommended!” – Bravewords

“This is how gifted SLUDGEHAMMER as a band is, even with only a demo, EP and now LP under their belts. On their own, they’re a devastating DIY metal band. With a contract in-hand, they’re gonna become unstoppable.” – Blabbermouth

““Demons From the Woodwork”. It’s a jolting, high-octane, full-throttled romp that incorporates elements of thrash, death metal, and head-slugging groove — and it’s an infectious beast that Sludgehammer have unchained.” – No Clean Singing

“Sludgehammer have a great way of infusing groove into their sound. Not nearly enough of that in death metal these days” – CJSF – Metal Meltdown

Vancouver’s KOSM are ready to plunge listeners into the dark universe of Bloodborne with their new EP “Eyes On The Inside” due out Friday, June 28, 2019 and before it officially drops, the band has teamed up with MetalInsider.net for the release’s full stream at the following link: https://www.metalinsider.net/new-music/exclusive-ep-stream-kosm-eyes-on-the-inside

This dark and agile record shows that KOSM has matured in sound since releasing their 2018 Lovecraftian inspired debut album “Cosmonaut” and is the first release that features all members of the band contributing to the writing process. The band tells about the motivation for writing this album:

“We really set out to give people what they were asking of us, we all feel it’s going to be received incredibly well. On top of that, this is 100% for all the Bloodborne fans that trolled us into oblivion last year, so we hope that they love it just as much as the fans of progressive metal do! It’s heavier, trickier, and more concise with obvious nods to our biggest influences including Tool, Mastodon and Gojira.”

Quoting that they spent less time on this release than the previous one, KOSM feels like this is their strongest material to date focusing on the lore of the Bloodborne game and toying with their musicianship to create a five-track record that is heavier and more sonically detailed than earlier material.

Both progressive metal and Bloodborne fans alike will find a special place in their hearts and ears for “Eyes On The Inside”.

The EP will be available on Spotify, Bandcamp and Apple Music as of June 28th.

EPK – https://wp.me/pciNW-dsaBio:
KOSM is a progressive metal band hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada. Combining influences from Mastodon, Tool and Gojira; their sound is dynamic and unquestionably lethal.

Following this, the band is now gearing up for the release of their latest release in 2019, “Eyes On The Inside”, an EP exclusively based on the Bloodborne video game.

“Vancouver’s KOSM kick the door in with Cosmonaut, their monstrous full-length debut. Brace yourself for a satisfying trip through an exciting mountain range of cascading, meaty riffs, swelling rises and heady drops, all led by the powerful, soaring vocals of the dynamic Jessie Grace. ” – Beatroute BC

“KOSM cite Tool, Gojira and Mastodon as three of their main influences, and all three can be heard loud and clear on their new album, Cosmonaut.

“The song (Ancient Heart) itself, which swings between some appetizingly heavy progressive riffs and aggressive growls and more melodic moments (with clean singing behind them). A tough band to place in that regard, but one certainly worth seeking out as they continue to expand their sound.” – DeadRhetoric
“KOSM does a solid job of mixing technicality, mood and groove.  They have all sorts of dual guitar sections, and very psychedelic and moody parts on “Cosmonaut” as well.  They’re a well versed band with all kinds of moods and changes engaging your ears every split second. ” – Technical Music Review

“KOSM definitely show enough potential with this release to be a band that should be on your scopes.” – Noizze UK

“Kosm’s Cosmonaut isn’t bland: it’s the pleasing sound of a band following their own inner vision.” 9/10 – Hellbound

Vancouver’s KOSM are ready to plunge listeners into the dark universe of Bloodborne with their new EP “Eyes On The Inside” due out June 28, 2019.

The band’s first single ‘Yharnam’ can be heard and viewed in the following lyric video at https://youtu.be/6tyCw9aI8fI

BIO:

In the wilderness of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada, with a fascination for astronomy, Kevin Thiessen (guitar), Daniel Airth (guitar), Colin Righton (percussion), and Ferdy Belland (bass) united to create the interplanetary, instrumental prog metal that would come to be known as Phaeton.

Since 2017, they have been working quickly as a collaborative unit, honing their skills and orchestrating an attention-focused listening experience. One drenched in joy and wonder and the emotional, visceral release that only prog-metal can deliver. And the lack of lyrical interference only allows the listener the better opportunity to let their imaginations run wild with the music, drifting emotionally away on the solar winds to wherever they wish to soar.

Phaeton can be experienced with the release of the self-titled debut album out now as of December 21, 2018.

“Top-tier instrumental prog-metal-math music from the East Kootenay region performed by a quartet of veteran musicians.” – Stuart Derdeyn (The Vancouver Sun)

“The sound on all seven tracks is huge and if there was a “best sounding hammer-ons” award then March of the Synthetics could be a contender.” – Stuart Derdeyn (The Vancouver Sun)

“An epic Progressive Metal listening experience.”  – Trevor Hatter (BeatRoute Magazine)

“This badass band makes a devastating impact with their high velocity musical assault.” – Time Lord (Progarchy)

“A sparkling, sizzling debut from PHAETON, taking us on a futuristic musical journey, with deep roots in the ancient past.” – Stephen Conrad (Progressive Rock Fanatics)

Vancouver progressive metal band KOSM released their debut “Cosmonaut” during November 2018. A concept album loosely based on the weird fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, along with borrowing influences from the science-fiction of Frank Herbert, and Roger Zelazny, the full length serves as both musical and lyrical adventure.

The band explains:

“The cosmonaut’s journey is essentially symbolic, serving as a commentary on the human experience: a journey from confusion and anger, to transcendence and self-understanding.”

With praise from their local Vancouver metal scene and beyond for their debut full length, the band is sharing another tribute to the author H.P. Lovecraft that has inspired them, their music, and their latest music video ‘Wza-Y’ei’.

The band adds:

“The word ‘Wza-Y’ei’ is a word in Aklo, the language of the Old Ones. We are interpreting the meaning as something akin to “Om”, or the liberation of the mind. This is a summation of the album themes. Cosmonaut begins with naivety explored in the first track “Space Mead,” but ends in epiphany with ‘Wza-Y’ei’.”
