About:

The terrifically titled Terrifier brings their thrash metal apocalypse straight outta Vancouver BC. As the Metal God himself Rob Halford memorably sang: ‘fast and furious/we ride the universe’, that very much sums up Terrifier’s dedication to the glory of thrash!

Originally known as Skullhammer, Terrifier released their debut album ‘Destroyers of the Faith’ back in 2012 and Metal Or Death EP in 2013, so this is no flash-in-the-pan thrash band!

Incorporating jackhammer drums, bulldozing bass-lines, a twin-lead attack that leaves posers pulped in its wake, and vocals that can level mountains, Terrifier’s motto could well be ‘thrashing is our business…and business is good’

Terrifier take what has gone before, the old gods, Metallica, Slayer, and use them to birth new sounds, the old gods are eternal but hail the new gods too!

Vocalist, bassist and founder member Chase Thibodeau explains Terrifier’s reason for being. ‘We formed this band because we love thrash and play what we think sounds cool…our music is fast, technical, heavy and melodic and shredding.’ Indeed, this is a band that truly puts the shred inside your head!

It’s their inspirations that drive them to create such perspiration-inducing music as Chase explains: ‘Adrenaline, speed and aggression….that’s the feeling we want to put into people….We started steering more towards an aggressive thrash sound…even being influenced by death metal!’

Their new release ‘Weapons of Thrash Destruction’ features such soon to be classics as ‘Bestial Tyranny’, ‘Skitzoid Embolism’ and ‘Nuclear Demolisher’ and ‘Sect of the Serpent’, a song inspired by Conan the Barbarian as Chase says ‘the idea was to trample the weak and hurdle the dead on this one!’

Chase sums up Terrifier’s new music: ‘We think people will enjoy this album and use our music to get pumped up for whatever life throws at them. It would be our honour to inspire others into thrash metal…the world needs more thrash!’

Terrifier’s new album ‘Weapons of Thrash Destruction’ is slated for release on January, 20 2017 via Test Your Metal Records.

Recognizing the achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC Music Awards is proud to reveal the artist nominees for their inaugural year in supporting and celebrating the wide range of musical talent based in the city. Honouring artists in 18 categories (listed below), the YYC Music Awards will be hosting their first annual gala on September 25th at Studio Bell in the National Music Centre. Doors will be at 7pm with the ceremony beginning at 8:15pm. Tickets for the event will be available for purchase as of August 30th online at YYCMusicAwards.com. Ticket price is $39.99 plus service fees.

Canadian thrash legends EXCITER will be taking the stage at this year’s Calgary Metalfest on September 17th at Flames Central presented by Big Nate Productions. Their performance is one for the history books as they will be reuniting their original line up for the first time since 1985 plus sharing the stage with fellow Canadian thrash pioneers ANNIHILATOR, RAZOR and SACRIFICE. All have never before performed on the same stage together, making the concert a historic moment in metal.

EXCITER guitarist John Ricci comments:

“We are really stoked to participate at the fest with such great bands that came out of Canada and went on to establish themselves as serious contenders in the metal market around the globe. The last time the original line-up played together was the summer of 1985, our last tour together across the USA. Vivek Venkatesh proudly presents a unique celebration of film, music and academic research in metal music studies titled Doomed to Death. This unique summerGrimposium festival will feature a live music event on August 5 with performances from extreme metal bands Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful and Cardinal Wyrm, preceded by an exclusive live interview with the founding members of death metal/grindcore veterans Repulsion.

And on August 4, Grimposium will host the Canadian premiere screening of Death by Metal – the biopic of Chuck Schuldiner, late frontman of the legendary extreme metal bands Death and Control Denied – as well as a death metal vocal workshop, an industry panel on the economics of extreme metal and an academic symposium, all hosted at Concordia University (VA114 Cinema, 1395 Rene-Levesque Ouest).

The Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful, and Cardinal Wyrm performance will take place at 20h00 on August 5 at Co-op Katacombes; tickets are $25 (Facebook eventhere; tickets on sale here). Jason Netherton, singer and bassist for Misery Index, says that the band “… is looking very much forward to Doomed to Death! TheGrimposium events are notably fantastic contributions to the extreme metal underground, and we are honored to be able to participate in this stellar event alongside such a ferocious mix of bands! Revel in Flesh!” Pranjal Tiwari, drummer and vocalist for Cardinal Wyrm states: “We can’t wait to return to Montreal, one of our favourite cities, and we have an album’s worth of new songs since the last time we played there. The bill that Grimposium has put together is a varied and interesting one with a bunch of stellar bands from different subgenres – we are very excited to bring the audience down into the belly of doom metal during our set, and lay a pall of heaviness over the evening’s proceedings.”

The live interview with Repulsion is at 16h30 at Co-op Katacombes; it is free and open to the public. Scott Carlson and Matt Olivo, founding members of Repulsionwill be interviewed by Albert Mudrian of Decibel Magazine and Jason Netherton from Misery Index about their role in the development of the genres of death metal and grindcore, and the influence that Repulsion has had on the global extreme metal scene.

The Death by Metal screening is free to the public and will take place at 19h00 on August 4 at the VA114 cinema at Concordia University (Facebook event here). There will also be a post-screening Q&A with director Felipe Belalcazar. The screening will be preceded by a death metal vocal workshop led by Marie-Hélène Landry ofObsolete Mankind and Sébastien Croteau of Necrotic Mutation. In addition, the event includes a bilingual panel on the Economics of Extreme Metal with Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel (Misery Index), Michael Berberian (Season of Mist), and Michelle Ayoub (Broken Board Montreal).

Finally, the Doomed to Death Academic Symposium will be held from 12h00 – 14h30 on August 4 at Concordia University’s Department of Education (FG 5.345, 1610 Rue Ste Catherine). For the first time since its inaugural event, Grimposium will feature a symposium featuring the academic and professional work of members of Misery Index and Vastum. Daniel Butler from Vastum, as well as Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel from Misery Index will explore the intersection of psychoanalysis, media studies and tourism management in the domain of extreme metal music studies and showcase their respective graduate research and professional projects (abstracts and more information are available here). The session will be moderated by Concordia University’s Lee Mellor, a SSHRC doctoral fellow, and a PhD Candidate in the Individualised program. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Grimposium is an international touring festival and conference which brings together musicians, visual artists, journalists, writers and record label executives in the global extreme metal scene. Canadian death metal masters NECRONOMICON have updated their dates for their first headlining tour across Canada since 2011 with support from technical death metallers Abiotic and epic death metal quartet Vesperia. The ‘Okkultis In Canada Tour’ presented by PureGrainAudio.com will kick off in Ottawa, ON on August 4th and head as far west as Vancouver to wrap up back east in Timmins, ON on August 26th (Note: Aug 27th in Oshawa Abiotic and Vesperia only). Following the cross Canadian tour, NECRONOMICON will meet up with Swedish black metallers MARDUK plus label mates Greece’s extreme metal titans ROTTING CHRIST and Dutch symphonic black metal trio CARACH ANGREN for their USA September tour.

BIO:

The Apex formed in August of 2013.

They are a collective of individuals from the Ontario metal community, whom over the years have come together from past bands such as, Closed Casket Funeral, Dismata, Blood Shot Eye, The Coalition Design, and Corprophemia to form The Apex.

In a true culmination of talent, dedication, and timing, this group has created a unique hometown sound that is now being called “Windsor Ghetto Tech”. The brutal sonic assault of their music coupled with the emotional reckless abandonment of their live performance, have drawn stanch comparisons to Meshuggah and classic Dillinger Escape Plan rounded out with a distinctly Canadian flair. To add influence, vocalist Darren M. suffers from Neurogenic Stammering, which effects his speech where the brain won’t tell the mouth what to say so he’s unable to carry on a normal conversation, but for some reason he’s able to scream all the lyrics live and that is how he gets to express himself vocally with the band.

In July, 2014 they entered Shark Tank Productions studio in Windsor, Ontario to begin recording their debut self-titled full length album, “The Apex”. They hired engineer Nick Kinnish of Serafina Productions (Johnny Truent, Architects, and more) to aid them in capturing their sound accurately. In November, 2014 they completed their recording and announced the independent release date of February 21st, 2015. In 2016, the band entered Empire Recording Studios to record their next release, the EP ‘Underbelly’ set to be unleashed in August.

TOUR EXPERIENCE
This band is no stranger to hitting the pavement to support the music they love to make. In their 15+ years of experience creating music in previous bands, they’ve been support on tour for bands like: Cephalic Carnage, All Shall Perish, Despised Icon, Cryptopsy, Today Is The Day, Killitorous, Erimha and Ion Dissonance to name a few. In previous bands they’ve also shared the stage on festivals with bands like: SOD, Venom, Obituary, Cradle Of Filth, Earth Crisis, God Forbid, Skinless, Beneath The Massacre and more to crowds up to 7500+ in North America.

As their current lineup “The Apex”, they have already invested in a mid-sized tour bus and have began to book many shows and festivals across Canada for 2016.

VOW OF THORNS have been conceptualizing albums and pushing the boundary between aggressive and emotional. Unleashing their new album ‘Advent of The Human God’ this past March via Season of Mist, Canadian death metal masters NECRONOMICON will be hitting the road for their first headlining tour across Canada since 2011 with support from technical death metallers Abiotic and epic death metal quartet Vesperia. The ‘Okkultis In Canada Tour’ presented by PureGrainAudio.com will kick off in Ottawa, ON on August 4th and head as far west as Vancouver to wrap up back east in Timmins, ON on August 26th (Note: Aug 27th in Oshawa Abiotic and Vesperia only). Following the cross Canadian tour, NECRONOMICON will meet up with Swedish black metallers MARDUK plus label mates Greece’s extreme metal titans ROTTING CHRIST and Dutch symphonic black metal trio CARACH ANGREN for their USA September tour.

The band’s new EP ‘Mouichido’ is a rebirth for the band as it’s a re-release of re-recorded material from their 2014 EP ‘Reborn’. ‘Mouichido’ is the Japanese word for “Repeat” or “to do one more time” and is perfectly titled for the EP to signify its re-release of previously recorded versions that now feature new vocalist Alex Friis and bass tracks recorded by Tristan Martin plus live performance being done by Ryan Loewen along with a guest appearance by vocalist Mark Hunter of Chimaira on track ‘In Waves’.

Vancouver-based Without Mercy certainly stays true to its name. Ruthless and menacing, these Canadian metal titans have cultivated and redefined the phrase, “Fuck Pussy Metal”.

Founded in 2004, Without Mercy has gone from strength to strength over the years. They released their first EP “All Else Fails” in 2007 completely independently and used its humble beginnings to start the catapulting of performances, internet presence and radio play. In 2009, Without Mercy went on to record their self-titled full length album using the same team that worked on records by Devin Townsend, Mudvayne, and Marilyn Manson. Without Mercy rode the attention wave of their self-titled debut, using the escalation to begin a relentless performance schedule that would lead them far from their hometown and include over 200 live performances. No stranger to tenacity, in only a few short years Without Mercy have achieved; being the only indie metal band in Western Canada to have two tracks available on Rock Band 3, being featured in Tattoo Savage Magazine, and pioneering the phrases, ‘You Smell Like A Bitch’ and ‘Fuck Pussy Metal’ – which have now become synonymous with the band.

In 2014, Without Mercy unleashed third studio release, “Reborn”. Another massive evolution for the band, Without Mercy sought to bring back the organic metal sound and combine it with a high production standard. Fast forward to 2016, some line up changes with a new vocalist and bassist, the band is ready to share with fans re-recorded material from ‘Reborn’ on their new EP ‘Mouichido’ that even features Chimaira vocalist Mark Hunter on their track ‘In Waves’. “‘Meeting on the Astral Plane’ tells the story of one man’s escape from physical reality to a place of infinite possibilities; an existence free of mortal boundaries. The escape, however, is only temporary and he must return to his lowly existence and face himself, which he does in the following track ‘Great Abomination’. His experience on the astral plane leads him to believe that death may be the ultimate escape. As our protagonist’s experience progresses so does the music. From the triumphant march of the opening riff to the crushing doom encased ending.”
