Canada’s UTILITY PROVIDER Shares Lyric Video For Title Track Off Groovy Prog Album “Challenger” Out End of Nov 2024

L-R – Vadim Cartovenco – Drums, Chris Thomas – Guitar/Backing Vocals, Tyler Mayfield – Lead Vocals, Shayne Gold – Bass/Backing Vocals

Vancouver, Canada’s UTILITY PROVIDER is set to release their third full-length “Challenger” at the end of November 2024 produced with Nick Bergeron at Starport Studios (Langley, B.C.) with mixing and mastering by the renowned Michael Kraushaar at Little Red Studios (Vancouver B.C).

With a fresh new lineup, the band is excited to unveil this latest offering to newcomers of their sound along with their current fan following.

“I truly believe this album is going to blow our fans away. The writing is much stronger than in the previous releases and the production as a whole is miles ahead of them. What I love about this album is how each song has its own identity; its own sound, and its own story. There are definitely some surprises in store for our fans. One song that in particular stands out for me is “Independent Soul” because it sounds absolutely nothing like anything U.P. has put out before. I’m really excited to see what everyone thinks!” says vocalist Tyler Mayfield.

On this record, the band’s main ambition is to take fans on a unique, powerful, and intense listening experience. The overarching theme of “Challenger” is one of triumph over adversity and having the courage to throw off your “chains” (both physical and mental) and strike out on your own. UTILITY PROVIDER wants fans to be able to make a connection with the music and connect with them on a very personal level. They showcase this with a concept of a side “A” and a side “B”.

“Up until this album, all U.P songs were written in drop C tuning. The first 6 songs of the album stay in that same drop C tuning, however side “B” is written in A# tuning – it’s literally a whole new sound for our fans! The transition from side “A” to side “B” is marked by a beautiful instrumental track written solely by guitarist Chris Thomas called “Northern Storm”. We hope the listeners will enjoy this nuance within the album. We sure had a ton of fun recording it!” adds Mayfield.

Lyrically, the album “Challenger” was mostly penned by vocalist Tyler Mayfield who wants to tell a story. He elaborates:

“As the lead vocalist, I feel that it’s my duty to put into words the message that the music is trying to convey. There is a lot of teamwork between Chris and myself to get that right. So in this way, the lyrics don’t always necessarily reflect my personal life, but are more tailored to reflect the story within the music.”

Drummer Vadim Cartovenco adds:

“This is the title track of the album so we spent a lot of time making sure the production was exactly what we wanted. Music was written by Vadim and Chris during 2023 and we played the song live a lot. The music, I think, sounds like a cool mix of thrash and power metal. The guitars are especially highlighted in this song to give it that power and distinct U.P tone that Chris is known for. The verses have quick guitar licks overtop of the main melody to add flavor. The vocals are mostly clean so listeners can hear the lyrics, which embody the theme of the album. Drums is a combination of thrash metal and progressive metal, Vadim’s favorite part is the groove section where China played with off beat pattern. This song in particular focuses on overcoming physical challenges with a fighting spirit. You will notice that the lyrics repeat in each verse – this was done on purpose to really drive home the point.”

With members individually influenced by different elements of metal. You will hear their sonic meshing of blues rock, prog metal, thrash, and grunge as they reveal their single and title track accompanied by a lyric video. The song itself is a mix of thrash and power metal with the guitars highlighted to give it that U.P. tone that Chris Thomas is known for. Lyrically co-written by Mayfield and Thomas, the track focuses on overcoming physical challenges with a fighting spirit.

0 Rockshots Records – ONELEGMAN Shares New Music Video “Steric Hindrance” Off Latest Album “Event Horizon”

  • December 13, 2023

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – December 13, 2023

ONELEGMAN Shares New Music Video “Steric Hindrance” Off Latest Album “Event Horizon”

Releasing their latest album “Event Horizon” on Rockshots Records in October 2022, Italian proggers ONELEGMAN are sharing their new music video for the track “Steric Hindrance”. The band explains in their own words:

“Steric Hindrance” is something we have never done before. We explored electronic music with a big rock chorus. Something Depeche Mode could be proud of. In science, the steric hindrance is the force that keeps the atoms within the same molecule allowing matter and life to exist. It’s a bond impossible to break. Just like the one between lovers at the end of a relationship.”

Watch the video for “Steric Hindrance” at https://youtu.be/aJgJU6Sp4xk

The third full-length from the trio, “Event Horizon” is ONELEGMAN’s most peculiar release to follow a new concept for each one of its tracks; to create a mosaic with sounds, lyrics, and graphics to show the listener the direction of their journey. The band explains in further detail:

“‘Event Horizon’ is a journey. A journey in the human intimate, sometimes in the unconscious, exploring the universe to the limit of possible knowledge and consciousness. The research for new worlds, the chaos theory, the last days of a star’s life, the direction of time, entropy, the fourth dimension that is gravity, love as an elementary form of existence, existence as a mere force of attraction, and repulsion between electrons, existence as creatures of God or as sons of physics and chemistry. All different shapes of life itself, like the music we composed: from frenzy guitar riffs to electro-rock ambient. Different musical styles that link each other through words and music.”

It is not the band’s intention to translate the works of scientists such as Greene, Rovelli, Bertone, Hawking, Jim Al-Khalili, and Primo Levi into music, but to take inspiration from their treatises, terminologies, and thoughts to build cosmic and quantum images where they search for the true human essence, perhaps where life is born.

ONELEGMAN is recommended for fans of Devin Townsend, Faith No More, and Alice In Chains.

About:

ONELEGMAN was formed in 2003 in Reggio Emilia, Italy. They introduced themselves to the world with their 2007 self-produced EP. In 2011, they collaborated with Dysfunction Production, an Italian team of producers who worked with Dino Cazares (Fear Factory), Tue Madsen (Meshuggah), Logan Mader (Machine Head), and Dan Korneff (Paramore), Bjorn Strid (Soilwork) among the others to produce their debut album “The Crack”.

In 2015, they released their sophomore full-length “DO YOU REALLY THINK THIS WORLD WAS MADE FOR YOU?”. The record was a more rock-oriented, dynamic, orchestral concept album about people experiencing, living, and interpreting the theme of change through a tragedy that leaves a mark on their lives forever. It was dedicated to those affected by the earthquakes that struck the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy in May 2012.

Supporting their catalogue with tours across Italy and sharing the stage with bands like HATEBREED, WOLFMOTHER, and LACUNA COIL among many others, ONELEGMAN entered the studio in 2019 to create their third album, “Evecatalognt Horizon” released in October 2022.

0 Prog Band Shumaun Announce New Album “Memories & Intuition” Featuring An All-Star Lineup of Drummers, Streaming First Single “Memories of Water”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – June 29, 2021

For fans of Rush, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend

Prog Band Shumaun Announce New Album “Memories & Intuition” Featuring An All-Star Lineup of Drummers

Streaming First Single “Memories of Water”

New Album “Memories & Intuition” Out September 10th

Ft. Album Guests Thomas Lang (Peter Gabriel, Paul Gilbert),
Atma Anur (Jason Becker, Tony Macalpine),
Mark Zonder (Fates Warning, Warlord),
Leo Margarit (Pain of Salvation), and Chris DeChiara

Shumaun (L to R) Jose Mora: Bass, Farhad Hossain: Vocals, Guitar, Keys, Tyler Kim: Guitar

Virginia’s Shumaun is hard rock for people who love the sound of intricate rhythm sections, progressive inspired guitars, colorful synths, and melodic vocals. They have a new album “Memories & Intuition” coming out this fall, with the first single “Memories of Water” already released.

Shumaun is progressive, but not pretentious. They’re accessible to fans who wish to subject themselves to the melodic and ambitious soundscapes painted by the band. This is demonstrated through the single “Memories of Water”. According to the band, it really embodies what Shumaun is all about: writing progressive inspired tracks with memorable melodies and catchy hooks that anyone can sing along to. They continue to explain the album in their own words:

“I think this album is even more song-oriented than the previous two. It still contains many of the progressive characteristics of our previous songs with regard to odd time signatures and layered instrumentation, however, it’s a bit more refined and vocal driven, though there are a couple of instrumentals on it with some crazy progressive moments. I think there’s material on this album that’ll resonate with many prog fans, however, I feel the material won’t get lost on the average music fan who doesn’t necessarily listen to progressive music of any kind. It’s certainly my favorite Shumaun album to date.”

Alongside the regular band lineup, on this album, Shumaun employs the talents of legendary drummers Thomas Lang (Peter Gabriel, Paul Gilbert), Atma Anur (Jason Becker, Tony Macalpine), and Mark Zonder (Fates Warning, Warlord). Drummers Leo Margarit (Pain of Salvation) and Chris DeChiara also contributed.

Shumaun started as a solo project of Farhad Hossain, who at the time was playing with Iris Divine and needed another creative outlet for music that didn’t fit in the “prog rock/metal” genre. However, he was unable to stray from his roots of progressive rock and began the writing process for Shumaun’s first album.

Shumaun is recommended for fans of Rush, Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree.

The first single “Memories of Water” was released on April 9th and can be watched on YouTube – https://youtu.be/kxeJGQfy1ww

About:
Shumaun initially started as a solo project by Farhad Hossain (ex singer/guitarist/keyboardist of Iris Divine). After recording a few demos, he decided to recruit a few friends to help build the project into a full-fledged collaborative band. Through the course of recording their self-titled debut album, Shumaun went through a period of tribulation while securing a drummer. Original drummer Tanvir Tomal (ex Iris Divine) had to leave for professional obligations in the middle of the recording sessions and was later replaced with Waqar Khan (Entity Paradigm), who is also well known for his work with the platinum-selling Ali Azmat of the EMI recording artist Junoon (one of South Asia’s most successful rock bands). Waqar remained with the band long enough to record a few tracks on the debut record as well as appear live for some of the earlier shows. Travis Orbin (Darkest Hour, Periphery), Mark Zonder (Fates Warning, Warlord) recorded the remaining drums on the debut record that was released in the fall of 2015. Tanvir has since returned to the band as the live drummer.

2019 saw the band releasing their sophomore album “One Day Closer to Yesterday.” The album was once again mixed by Brett Caldas-Lima at Tower Studio in France. The album was rawer and heavier, but the melodies and vocals were never compromised. It includes the bombastic prog metal single “Go.”

2021 sees Shumaun releasing their third album “Memories & Intuition,” which features the amazing drumming of legends such as Thomas Lang (Peter Gabriel, Paul Gilbert), Atma Anur (Jason Becker, Tony Macalpine), Mark Zonder (Fates Warning, Warlord), and Leo Margarit (Pain of Salvation). Shumaun once again tapped Brett Caldas-Lima and Tower Studio for mixing and mastering. The album is their most melodic to date and consists of their single “Memories of Water.”

The Shumaun sound is shaped by the soaring vocals and lead guitar work of Farhad Hossain, the pounding melodic bass lines of Jose Mora, and the subtle guitar nuances of Tyler Kim. The band has received many accolades, and have made it onto several “album of the year” lists from sites such as Progressive Music Planet, Decibel Geek, and Metal Asylum etc. The band also won The Deli Magazine’s “Best of 2015” for Washington DC bands, and have been featured on Revolver Magazine, and Decibel Magazine.

Saskatoon’s Before & Apace Are Now Streaming Debut Album “The Denisovan”

Album Stream Premiere via TheProgSpace

“The Denisovan” Out May 11, 2021

Before & Apace has existed for a long time in the mind of Devin Martyniuk. He originally started gathering ideas about this project back in high school, when he first read a phrase in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. It caught his attention and became the name of what is now his heavy prog endeavour.

Nearly two decades in the making, Before & Apace is presenting the debut album “The Denisovan”, a collection of epiphanies that have altered Martyniuk’s worldview and have been translated into musical expression. It is a sequence of existential discoveries in odd time signatures and a merger of thinking and feeling.

“The Denisovan” only has four tracks, but they encompass nearly a full hour in total. Although the heavy influences are undeniable, Martyniuk also borrows many compositional facets from the world of symphony orchestras: from variations of a theme, programmatic writing, and movement-based pieces that evoke a concept. “Simultanagnosia”, for example, the album’s final song and its capstone, was to be written as a “trilogy in 4 parts”, where the first 3 would tap into a disjointed version of each of three facets of life: the physical, the mental, and the spiritual. Each movement was meant to be jarring, disharmonious, or incomplete in some way on its own – incomplete or imbalanced. The fourth movement was intended to incorporate a component of each of the first 3 movements such that when integrated together, the disparate parts would only now make sense. Martyniuk explains more:

“I’ve always loved the idea of using music to share ideas with others. Things seem so much more profound this way. So in the same vein as Tool writes about Carl Jung, or how System of a Down scream for prison reform, I always wanted Before & Apace to be something constructive. So I use Before & Apace basically like a compendium of epiphanies and life lessons that have come my way every once in a while – kind of like my recipe book for living a good life. I would love nothing more than to present the Before & Apace discography to my kids or grandkids someday and say, ‘Here it is. This is what Daddy’s all about. This is how I think we should coexist with everyone around us on this one lonely rock in the sky.’ And I’m extremely proud to be able to say that I’ve now made the first volume.”

Martyniuk acknowledges that his music is not for everyone, but he imagines there will be people who resonate with it. He has already begun working on the follow-up. “The Denisovan” is recommended for fans of Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, and The Mars Volta.

“The Denisovan” will be available as of Tursday, May 11, 2021, but can be heard in full now via its premiere on TheProgSpace HERE.

About:
BEFORE & APACE is a heavy progressive rock project from the creative mind of Saskatoon, Canada’s Devin Martyniuk. The project draws from the same well as Tool, The Mars Volta, and Meshuggah. Over a span of multiple years starting in the mid-2000s, while splitting time as a guitarist/multi-instrumentalist between Western Canada’s goth-punk/metal misfits, The New Jacobin Club, and eclectic folk-rock band, Old Joe and the Truth Hurts, Martyniuk began to craft the songs that would ultimately comprise the debut album THE DENISOVAN by BEFORE & APACE.

It was during this time that Devin Martyniuk met drummer Arlan Kopp (also of The Department Heads) as both were percussionists in the University of Saskatchewan’s Wind Orchestra. They bonded instantly over common musical interests and an amicable fondness for Heroes of Might and Magic III. After Devin shared some of his music with Kopp they began composing drum parts together, often beginning by sequencing the intricate parts using Drumkit from Hell (a set of drum samples created by the band Meshuggah).

Bryce Holcomb, one of Martyniuk’s closest friends and musical snob-kin since early adolescence, joined the project shortly thereafter as the vocalist and sometimes-guitarist. Holcomb’s band at the time, Moksha, were just finishing their run and both Martyniuk and Holcomb were excited at the opportunity to collaborate together musically again; they had previously been part of an acoustic guitar trio called Polysorbate-80, but with BEFORE & APACE, they would be able to explore a completely different span of the musical spectrum.

Now with just a bass player needed to round out the band, Jesse Selkirk joined BEFORE & APACE. While Selkirk would ultimately only stay with the project for a short time, he was integral in bringing focus to the final stages of composition. He would also bring in a few riffs that ended up being the first section of the opening track ‘Zeno’. Selkirk eventually stepped away from the project as he would go on to pursue his own creations: The Depth and, more currently, Sleepwreck.

Shortly after Selkirk’s departure, Kaylon Disiewich of Abscission and The Divided would step in and assume the role. In addition to his undeniably monstrous playing, Kaylon most importantly brought a sense of completeness to the band. After making the monumental task of learning the newly-finished and arduous songs, Kaylon added an unmistakable dimension to the band’s sound and would even define some of the most iconic moments (the post-intro drum-and-bass beginning of Simultanagnosia comes to mind).

With the lineup now complete and the songs finished, the band would now share the music in two ways: the stage and the recording. While BEFORE & APACE would go on to play a number of shows, nearly all in the Saskatoon area, their crowning achievement on the stage would be opening for Devin Townsend in Regina, SK. During this same period, the band would begin recording in Martyniuk’s home studio the songs that would comprise the debut album from BEFORE & APACE, THE DENISOVAN.

“The Denisovan” is due out May 11, 2021.

Before & Apace Announce “Ontogeny” Off Upcoming Debut “The Denisovan” 20 Years In The Making

“The Denisovan” Out May 11, 2021

Saskatoon’s Before & Apace was created by Devin Martyniuk who felt that there was an opportunity to blend the technical and programmatic aspects of music with the emotional. In lead up to the release of the heavy prog project’s debut album “The Denisovan” on May 11, 2021, the first single “Ontogeny” is streaming now at the following links:

YouTube: https://youtu.be/6YlSSjU43rs
Spotify: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/beforeandapace/ontogeny-2
Bandcamp: https://beforeandapace.bandcamp.com

The single “Ontogeny” was named after Ernst Haeckel’s biological theory that “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny” – that the development of a person (from embryo to adult) mimics the evolution of our species (from simple, cellular beings to complex ones). Martyniuk explores this concept thematically and musically to illustrate how we are interconnected on many scales (the micro-and the macro) with our environment and with each other. He then incorporated these themes into the music by creating a main theme  – the first riff of the song, repeated throughout – which was to be a microcosm of the song’s overall structure. Writing a song with this parameter wasn’t an easy feat. He explains the process in further detail:

“We couldn’t quite figure out a good drum part for the main riff of Ontogeny. We jammed it over and over and nothing quite felt right. Eventually, I asked (drummer) Arlan Kopp if he could do steady kicks, but with a quick 32nd note during each accent, and then I tapped it out with my hands. He just started laughing. Because just before the jam, we had been talking about the Meshuggah album that had just come out that same week, which Arlan had already heard, but I hadn’t. The album was Obzen (yeah, this is a while ago now, I know) and one of the most prominent songs on that album, Bleed, uses the exact same double-kick technique as I had just suggested to Arlan, without ever having heard it myself. Nonetheless, at the risk of using someone else’s idea (even though it was thought of independently) and despite it being a ridiculously difficult thing to pull off, Arlan just said, ‘ya, that’ll sound cool. Let’s do it.”

The writing process for “The Denisovan” has been long and arduous. Martyniuk has wanted to make this album for over 20 years. Some of the actual songs on the record began over 15 years ago. As drawn out as the process has been, the result is an immersive one. This music isn’t intended to be consumed casually. Like many of Martyniuk’s influences, he thinks it will require some amount of investment on behalf of the listener before they can fully engage and appreciate it – that there will be an evolution of one’s relationship with this material. There are some deliberate thematic elements that the music and lyrics both evoke together that may only reveal themselves after repeated listens.

Martyniuk, who is the main composer, plays guitars and contributes backing vocals for Before & Apace. On “The Denisovan”, he is joined by Kaylon Disiewich (bass, Taurus pedals), Bryce Holcomb (vocals, guitar), and Arlan Kopp (drums, percussion). Before & Apace is heavy and progressive, but sans meedly-meedly. It is recommended for fans of Tool, Meshuggah, and Devin Townsend.

“The Denisovan” will be available as of May 11, 2021.

No Hope For The Lost Shares Video “Jecht” From Final Fantasy X Themed EP “The Pilgrimage”

Video Premiere via NewFuryMedia

“The Pilgrimage” Out Now!

Following the Covid related demise of their band Deadlights, Re Mayer (guitar/backing vocals/synth) and Nathanael Bohnet (bass/lead vocals) took the opportunity to reimagine their sound and image to create No Hope For The Lost. Unleashing their introductory EP entitled “The Pilgrimage” earlier this April; the duo gave fans a taste of their entirely new sound, but left it just short enough to keep hype levels high.

The EP as a whole is structured to be a listening experience from beginning to end, combining an atmosphere of melody and groove with a foundation of heavy rhythms and ferocious vocal patterns, all wrapped up in a Final Fantasy X theme that will surely please members of that fandom.

Today, the band shares their music video for EP closer “Jecht” via its premiere on NewFuryMedia HERE.

The band adds:

“Jecht is a reimagining of a song originally written by Nate on his first solo album dubbed The Painted World. The song was originally intended to be played live in the Deadlights setlist, but after spending a lot of time in the studio with it and switching off ideas with Re, the song slowly evolved into an entirely almost new track. The intro song Braska was originally the beginning of Jecht, but once the full recording was made, it was then realized that splitting the song sections across the EP made a reprising theme throughout the short duration of the record. What really makes this song are the addition of guitar leads and synths written by Re to make it sound almost entirely different than the original, as well as the use of Nate’s massive choir-like choruses and vocal production to give it the explosive and finale-esque feel it was imagined as in the studio. Rhythm guitar-wise, this song was especially used to show off Re’s use of fast palm muting, dynamics, and various squeal and scrape based noises to transition parts while still following a template that the bass recorded by Nate really helped sound crunchy and thick in the bottom end.”

Recommended for fans of Periphery, Meshuggah, and Deftones, “The Pilgrimage” is a high-energy EP based on groove, melody, and a massive-sounding layered production. In a world where the fine line between djent, metalcore, and progressive metal is continuously blurred, “The Pilgrimage” is a sound confident on its own that refuses to fit in while still having the formulas that make interesting and catchy music.

“The Pilgrimage” is available at the following links: Bandcamp and Spotify, Apple Music here.

“The demonic possession vocals are back for “Jecht” with a barrage of Nu-Metalcore riffs that create a dramatic and frantic pit starter. An unexpected and sumptuous solo followed by a big breakdown sequence is an absolute pleasure.” – Metal Noise

““Yunalesca” is another super-short track, but the melodies are outstanding. There is a thick heavy synth line with clean guitars and piano notes, along with some ethereal singing. It begins to pick up, and segues into “Jecht.” The angry vocals and Djent tones are back. It chugs along with some meter shifting until the chorus, where some clean vocals come in. Here is where I might recommend some backing vocals to thicken up the sound, but the song is on fire.” – Metal Temple

“The guitar work exists in a sort of djent space without being overwhelming, knowing when to take breaks and go for it. A good example of this is part three which  acts as an interlude. The instrumentation here is actually really clever with the feeling of space being very apparent. ” – Rock Out Stand Out

“”Yu Yevon” knocks everything and everyone over like a waltz from the start. Expect a kind of mix of diverse genres such as progressive metal, metalcore mixed with soundscapes, and a predilection for video games.” – Musika

Logan Grimm is an ambitious young artist seeking to take on the world as the creator of Grimmreaper. He has developed an intense backstory for a multimedia project that explores the very human realities of tragedy and suffering, and the choices they present, from nihilism and resentment to transcendence and courage. In the process of this, as a solo artist, he has crafted music that fuses the influences of highly technical bands like Dragonforce and Meshuggah with the work of more mainstream names such as Five Finger Death Punch and Bullet For My Valentine.

Set to unveil the debut album entitled “The Tragedy of Being” on Tuesday, March 30th, Grimmreaper has teamed with GhostCultMagzine for its exclusive stream before it officially drops.

Listen HERE.

Logan Grimm aka Grimmreaper adds:

“It’s been a long process to get this solo record ready, but I couldn’t be more excited to finally put it out there. With this debut album, I’m trying to give fans an experience that goes to different places in metal, from fast and hard, to slow and groovy, and even a Babymetal cover song. It’s a dark record with many twists and turns, but never boring. The lyrics come from ideas of old stories and archetypes, but the music isn’t as abstract. Some songs are commercial sounding in their structure, but some are longer with abrupt changes and weird patterns. The album is a journey through different tastes of metal, and while it’s meant to be enjoyed from start to finish, each song stands strong on its own.”

With a bright future painted before him featuring everything from forming a DIY label to endless touring, Logan Grimm has the ambition and the vision to match. Poised to be the next great force in metal, Grimmreaper looks boldly into the future.

Recommended for fans of Meshuggah, Trivium, and In Flames, Grimmreaper‘s “The Tragedy of Being” will be available on all digital platforms as of March 30th.

“Texas musician and multi-instrumentalist Logan Grimm is an ambitious young artist seeking to take on the world. As Grimmrepear, he has developed an intense backstory for a multimedia project that explores the very human realities of tragedy and suffering, and the choices they present, from nihilism and resentment to transcendence and courage.” – New Noise Magazine

“Talk about ambition. Grimmreaper, the brainchild of Logan Grimm, is a modern metal project where Logan plays all the instruments. Merging modern metal influences like Bullet For My Valentine with more technical ones like Meshuggah, the project is as much a multimedia one as it is a musical one.” – New Fury Media

“If you like pounding rhythms and impressive lead playing this power metal track (North Star) is just for you. With emotive vocals and rampaging rhythms, this is a classic headbanger from the very first double bass drum kick. The vocals soar and take flight mirroring the lyrical content. Throw in an epic thrash metal solo and we have one of the year’s best metal tracks- and it’s only the first week of January.” – BackSeatMafia

“Grimmreaper is inspired by many different sub-genres of metal, but it is without doubt that power metal is the strongest flavour in this particular track (North Star). There’s plenty of variation of riffs involved, ranging from meaty chugs to epic melodies that soar out of the atmosphere. In fact, the riff that starts at 0:33 sounds very similar to Those Who Fight Further from the Final Fantasy 7 soundtrack, at least to start off with, And that happens to be one of my most favourite pieces of music ever, so I was smiling giddily when I heard that part.” – Abrasive Noise

Canada’s No Hope for The Lost Announce Final Fantasy X Themed EP “The Pilgrimage” With Single “Yu Yevon”

Lyric Video Premiere via IDIOTEQ

EP “The Pilgrimage” Out April 9th, 2021

Following the Covid related demise of their band Deadlights, Re Mayer (guitar/backing vocals/synth) and Nathanael Bohnet (bass/lead vocals) took the opportunity to reimagine their sound and image to create No Hope For The Lost. They created their forthcoming introductory EP entitled “The Pilgrimage” to give fans a taste of their entirely new sound, but left it just short enough to keep hype levels high.

Their first single “Yu Yevon” immediately explodes into a rhythmic groove driven by heavy guitars and bass. It is quickly followed by screamed vocals and synth-driven interludes. The chorus of the track is a key change towards an upbeat and soaring movement that descends back into the heavy rhythmic territory that glues the song together. The band explains the track in more detail:

“It is the combination of an old demo from a band both Re and Nate had their separate times in, with the new direction that they had both been imagining. It ended up becoming a heavy yet upbeat back and forth between pummeling rhythms and soaring choruses. A very verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus song at heart, “Yu Yevon” was designed to be the set opener/EP kickstarter that reintroduces us as No Hope For The Lost.”

The EP as a whole is a structured listening experience that combines an atmosphere of melody and groove with a foundation of heavy rhythms and ferocious vocal patterns, all wrapped up in a Final Fantasy X theme that will surely please members of that fandom.

Groovy metalcore blended with hints of prog awaits with “The Pilgrimage”, which is highly recommended for fans of Periphery, Meshuggah, and Deftones.

Grimmreaper Covers Babymetal’s “Road of Resistance” w/ Own English Lyrics

Track Premiere via New Noise Magazine

Debut Album “The Tragedy of Being” Out March 2021

The fourth and final single leading up to the full release of Grimmreaper’s debut album “The Tragedy of Being” is upon us, and today he shares his cover version of Babymetal‘s “Road of Resistance”, which features Dragonforce guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman on the original recording.

Grimmreapear elaborates for choosing the track to cover:

“I’ve been a Dragonforce fan forever. I first heard this song by Babymetal and thought ‘That’s Japanese Dragonforce for sure.’ Sure enough, Dragonforce helped write some songs for them, including this one. I’ve been a fan of Babymetal ever since.

I re-wrote the lyrics in English in 2018 and recorded the cover in my apartment when I lived in Japan. I lived there for a little over a year. It took almost 2 years of learning, recording, failing, and trying again before it was done. Dragonforce often writes about the hero’s journey, mountains, dragons and archetypes, and this cover sticks with those themes, but also fits in with the album’s story.”

Grimmreaper also pays homage to Dragonforce’s writing style by making the cover version of the song about the nobility of moving forward in life, up the mountain. It also fits into the theme of his own album “The Tragedy of Being” quite nicely. The full length is a concept record, which goes through the default conditions of life, tragedy, and suffering, and the options they present, nihilism and resentment, or transcendence and courage.

Grimmreaper’s solo project has been described as mixing technical styles like those of Dragonforce and Meshuggah with mainstream styles like Bullet For My Valentine and Five Finger Death Punch. “The Tragedy of Being” is a dark record with many twists and turns, but never boring. The album is a journey through different tastes of metal, and while it’s meant to be enjoyed from start to finish, each song stands strong on its own.

Recommended for fans of Meshuggah, Trivium, and Devin Townsend, Grimmreaper‘s cover version of “Road of Resistance” can be heard via its premiere on New Noise Magazine HERE.

The full release of “The Tragedy of Being” is out on March 30, 2021.

About:

Logan Grimm is an ambitious young artist seeking to take on the world, and the creator of Grimmreaper. He has developed an intense backstory for a multimedia project that explores the very human realities of tragedy and suffering, and the choices they present, from nihilism and resentment to transcendence and courage. In the process of this, he has crafted music that fuses the influences of highly technical bands like Dragonforce and Meshuggah with the work of more mainstream names such as Five Finger Death Punch and Bullet For My Valentine.

The project, which will start to see release in the early half of 2021, will center around an album entitled The Tragedy Of Being. The record explores noble and contemptible ways to respond to the conditions inherent to human consciousness. Since it is wholly a solo project, Grimm will perform on the record as each ‘band member.’ He will also represent each member in the videos released for the project, each hidden behind a black hood with a different appearance. The Tragedy Of Being will be accompanied by a documentary of the creation process featuring the twin personalities of the business-minded Logan and the poetic artist, Grimm. It will embody his sense of humor, split personas, and inspirations.

Representing himself as the embodiment of his lyrical themes, Logan Grimm has built a strong visual presence for the project. Instantly recognizable and endlessly ambitious, there are a lot of interesting twists and turns presented in the work of Grimmreaper. With a bright future painted before him featuring everything from forming a DIY label to endless touring, Logan Grimm has the ambition and the vision to match. Poised to be the next great force in metal, Grimmreaper look boldly into the future.
