Alienatör is a sludge metal band from Ontario, Canada that combines punk, hardcore, and noise rock elements into a stripped-down package, full of razor-sharp riffs and memorable hooks. They have recently released their second album, “Regrets”, which is a grim postcard from the depths of the human psyche. Their darkest release yet, it is a reaction to years of deep political turmoil, the erosion of truth, as well as personal politics of grief, loss, and struggle. It’s an album that touches on personal and social themes. Flourishes of melody drenched in a caustic sludge, painted in shades of black. The music video for “The Less Dead” gives a glimpse of the band performing live, channeling all their energy and passion into their art. They describe the theme behind the song:

“The “less dead,” is a term for those that are considered less of a priority for police investigations and therefore are easy victims for predators – sex workers, people of color, the poor, etc. Written before the George Floyd murder but certainly reinforced by it. The closest to a straight-ahead punk song on the album. Simon’s tom work in the bridge really elevates it.”

The video for “The Less Dead” can be viewed via its premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

Alienatör started out very sludgy but as they mature they are cobbling bits of different heavy styles together, juxtaposing very fast, thrashy stuff with slower doomy stuff. They slowly forged their own sound which carries a lot of the energy of punk and post-hardcore but still has a heavy edge.

“Regrets” is bleak and abrasive but with moments of calm, melody, and beauty to juxtapose against the ugliness. It is dark, cathartic and explores personal themes of discontent, racism, and abuse of power in Canada and the erosion of truth we’ve seen in modern times. It is recommended for fans of Jesus Lizard, Unsane, and Melvins.

“Regrets” available on Spotify, Alienator.bandcamp.com (CD)

About: Hailing from Thunder Bay, ON, Canada, Alienatör is a sludge metal band that combines punk, hardcore, and noise rock elements into a stripped-down package, full of razor-sharp riffs and memorable hooks.

Their debut album, “Pariahs,” released in 2109 moves from fast and aggressive to slow and swampy with touches of experimental weirdness. Many of the lyrics are about how we numb ourselves to the pain and disappointment of everyday life.

Fast forward to 2022, and the band is ready to unleash their follow-up, entitled “Regrets,” which introduces new drummer Simon Paquette to the fold. The album is bleak and abrasive, with moments of calm, melody, and beauty to juxtapose against the ugliness. Raw, uncompromising, and dark, it is emotionally heavy music that reflects a chaotic time in history.

“Noisy post-hardcore sludge, full of energy and rage… a genuine ass-kicker of a record.” – Decibel

“Aggression is the name of the game in the latest offering from Thunder Bay, Ontario crew ALIENATÖR. Brad King (guitar, vox), Sean Skillen (bass, vox), and Simon Paquette (drums) pack a big wallop for a band of three. Their sound is a hash of sludge, hardcore, noise, and crust, with a message that’s urgent and dire… Regrets plays out like a nervous breakdown, but a damned exhilarating one.” – Doomed and Stoned

“Dark, powerful and honest.” – Metal Noise.

“Music that will leave you feeling elated even if it’s covered in so much dirt and slime.” – GBHBL

“If you’re after something heavy and different, go for this because this is impressive.” – My Global Mind

Recently wrapping up their North American tour supporting legendary German speed metallers ACCEPT, Narcotic Wasteland founded by guitarist Dallas Toler-Wade is sharing their assaulting new single “Victims of the Algorithm” with a music video premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

The track is a crushing speed storm of death thrash, with its visceral vocals, and a demolishing blast beat war to annihilate the mosh pit. The song is the first time drummer/ vocalist Joseph Howard collaborated with Wade.

“I had the music done for an untitled track that I already recorded in the studio, but I didn’t have lyrics written yet, then Joseph showed me lyrics he wrote called Victims of the Algorithm and after I read them, I knew they were the perfect match for this song. To break it down, Victims of the Algorithm is about a lot of things, but for me, after reading Howard’s lyrics, it’s mostly about putting down our phones and breaking free from this ridiculous round of existence we have created for ourselves. Disconnecting from the daily neurotypical absurdities and enjoying life in the moment.” says Wade.

The music video was created by Kenji Tsunami of Tsunami films. Footage for the video was captured at the Thirsty Axe in Ukiah, CA, and at the band’s rehearsal space in San Francisco, CA.

“I think Kenji really captured our live prowess very well!! It has a very gritty punk rock feel to it, and fits the song and its meaning perfectly,” adds Wade.

“Victims of the Algorithm” will be featured on Narcotic Wasteland‘s forthcoming 2023 album via Megaforce Records (release date to be determined). The single was recorded with engineer, and producer Erik Schultek who is no stranger to the band having recorded drums, engineered and produced their self-titled debut album. The band’s 2023 album will be the follow-up to their sophomore full-length 2017’s “Delirium Tremens”.

Stream for “Victims of the Algorithm” available on https://orcd.co/nwvota

Inspired mostly by thrash metal and classic heavy metal, Narcotic Wasteland is becoming more thrash and speed and less death metal and getting better at writing material that is meaningful and powerful. They are recommended for fans of Vader, Death, The Crown, Autopsy, Pestilence, and Nile.

About:

Narcotic Wasteland started as a side project Dallas Toler-Wade had been working on the past few years when he was not touring or in the writing/studio with metal heavyweights “Nile.”

‘So I just started writing some songs kind of more in the style of things I was playing before my time in Nile. The more we started working on these demos the more we wanted to complete an album and take it to the stage!!! Our observation of what was going on in parts of the town we grew up in and in other parts of the world fueled a new level of angst for me personally.” DTW

Hailing from Los Angeles, USA, Our Dying World has been hard at work over the pandemic forging a new path in the metal world. Initially, they were more in the vein of thrashy death and released their debut album in 2019, but now they have embraced the melodic side of things and present their new form to the world through “Hymns of Blinding Darkness”. They explain further:

“It is an exceptional album of melody, personal experience, and the dedication of trying to push ourselves to our furthest limit. Lyrically, it speaks of many walks of life: sorrow, loss, hopelessness, but also empowerment, triumph, and solitude. There’s something for everyone to relate to in the wake of current times and cultural status. Musically, the record is attempting to stand out with its sophisticated arrangements, catchy hooks, and heavy melodies. It feels like a massive step up from where we were with Expedition and we think it’ll present itself as such.”

For the band, music comes from the spirit and when the lyrics happen, they’re usually derived from a personal experience or feeling that is going on in their lives. Musically, symphonic and melodic death metal isn’t the only genre that inspires them, they also give prominent nods to blues through their leads and solos.

Sticklers for details, when it is time for the band to go live they will provide an experience that’s more personal, intimate, and involved for the audience, unleashing a torrent of deep emotion, intense passion, and flowing melodic death metal upon fans.

“Hymns of Blinding Darkness” was produced, mixed, and mastered by Alex Crescioni at Stygian Sound. It is recommended for listeners of Wintersun, Children Of Bodom, and Nightwish

The album “Hymns Of Blinding Darkness” can be heard in full via its premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

About:

Over the last few years, Los Angeles’s Our Dying World has gone through a tremendous evolution of sound from thrashy death metal of their debut EP Expedition to the symphonic and melodic keyboard-oriented stylings of bands like Children Of Bodom, Nightwish, and Dimmu Borgir.

Formed in 2018 by drummer/guitarist Tom Tierney (ex-Whiplash), the group has played shows all over the USA in their short time together, bringing their sound from the fabled Sunset Strip in Hollywood to the New Jersey Metalfest where they opened for Metal Mike of Halford.

One thing is clear from the young band as they prepare for the release of their second release; they’ve come to stir the standards that hold the metal scene and redefine them.

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – June 2, 2022

CELESTIAL WIZARD Roll Nat 20s With New Video “Ice Realm” Off “Winds Of The Cosmos” Out July 2022

Music Video Premiere via Decibel Magazine

Combining their passions of Dungeons and Dragons, space adventure, and fantasy, Denver, Colorado’s Celestial Wizard takes influences like Arch Enemy, Metallica, Firewind, and Turisas and forge a path all their own! They have their second album coming out this year, the fantastical and fun-filled “Winds Of The Cosmos” and the first foray into this epic jaunt is the single “Ice Realm”.

The track is punchy and vibrant right out of the gate, drawing listeners in with its thrashy opening riff. The track is upbeat, fun, and engaging, keeping the energy sky-high through the entire song. The song takes the listener on a Dungeons and Dragons-inspired quest through frost-covered land in search of a magic weapon to dispel the realm’s icy curse. Guitarist/vocalist Nick Daggers details the single:

“The main riff at the beginning of the album was one that I had written even before we had recorded our first album. It’s such a fun song to play, and I’m happy it finally made the cut for an album. For a long time, a few of us used to play DnD together, and I think that developed our creativity tenfold in terms of writing for the band. It’s so incredible that we get to take that passion and those experiences and craft them into a song that so many people will get to enjoy. I think the song definitely captured the energy we had so many years ago playing the game together, and I’m so happy we get to share that with everyone.”

Modern and melodic, this album will be a breath of fresh air for Celestial Wizard’s existing fans as it is a massive leap forward in production quality and musicianship, being their most cohesive, collaborative work to date. New fans will be enticed by catchy, nerdy choruses overlaying the melodic death metal riffs. Their fire and passion are evident in both the single and the album, making it hard to sit still for this one. Celestial Wizard will be enjoyed by nerds of all kinds and especially fans of Dark Tranquillity, Firewind, and Amon Amarth.

The music video for the single “Ice Realm” can be seen and heard via its premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

The album “Winds Of The Cosmos” comes out on July 15, 2022.

About:
Celestial Wizard is a fantasy-inspired heavy metal band based out of Denver, Colorado. Formed in 2018, this heavy metal quartet delivers crushing riffs and grand stories of dragons and wizards. Seeking to stand out among the others, Celestial Wizard combines the best elements of death metal with symphonic and synthwave elements creating a unique and engaging sound.

In the beginning, they carried a symphonic, fantasy sound dousing every song with a healthy dose of strings, choirs, synthesizers, and the like. This vibe can be heard on their debut album “A Sinister Awakening” (2018). Intended to be a concept album, they marketed some of the limited edition tapes and mini VHS tapes as though the album was a movie, thus The tapes ended up getting put in the soundtrack section of record stores.

The next year, drummer Tim Gillman joined Nick Daggers (guitar/vocals), Guillermo Jurado (guitar/bass), and Amethyst Noir (vocals) and they slashed most of the unnecessary backing tracks and refocused the music on the riffs and the core elements of the band. The evolution is reflected in the second album “Winds Of The Cosmos” (2022) (Release Date July 15th).

They deliver an energetic and engaging performance while keeping the sound tight. They make an effort each night to make their songs come alive and immerse the audience in their love for playing. They have played with bands including Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Insomnium, Nekrogoblikon, and Unleash The Archers. Combining their passions of Dungeons and Dragons, space adventure, and fantasy, Celestial Wizard takes influences like Arch Enemy, Metallica, Firewind, and Turisas and forge a path all their own!

Toronto doom duo ITUS are streaming their debut EP “Primordial” due out March 13th. The EP is the first of two that will culminate into a full-length album.

The EP’s songs focus around aggressive, dark and primal concepts and embrace the death metal roots of the duo. They explain their goals for the release’s reception:

“We think that this EP will manage to ensnare those who are into heavier music, as well as attract other listeners who may not be so into death metal and related genres. The clean vocals and bright lead guitars really lighten up the darker, heavier passages of the songs. Reinier’s aggressive, chortling screams and yelling portrays an unhinged, brooding darkness, sure to keep listeners on the edge of their seats.”

Fans of Electric Wizard, Sleep and Left Behind are sure to enjoy the doomy and stoner rock rumbles of ITUS and their debut “Primordial”.

Listen to the full stream of “Primordial” via its premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

EP will be available on Bandcamp and Spotify.

About:

Early in 2019, ITUS was formed by Brandon Lucking (guitars) and Reinier Vandenbosch (vocals), who at the time, were in another band with a different style but looking to try something new. The result was these Ontario boys blending doom and stoner rock with crushing heavy metal passages, in a psychedelic atmosphere of horror influenced sounds.

The writing process is fairly simple for ITUS, Lucking writes the melodies as they come to him, and Vandenbosch writes the vocals and lyrics. The foundation of the lyrics always starts from personal experience, traumas, and how events in life unfold which are further imbued with influence from science fiction and horror fiction, mythology, dark philosophy, and political angst.

The soundscape of horrors that ITUS paints is enthralling already as a two-piece online project, and there are plans on the horizon to build it into a full-on touring 3 piece band delivering an energetic and abrasive live experience with a heavy, brooding ambiance.

– 30 –

“Primordial is a great release as it treats you to five unique tracks. Never once do you hear the same thing as ITUS truly does a great job of keeping you on your toes and guessing as to what you are about to hear next. Through and through this is a well crafted and cohesive effort that you would be unwise to skip over.” – Cadaver Garden

““This Can’t Be” is a change of pace from the record’s ravenous namesake single which came out earlier in the month. It’s a moving window into their world, with clean vocals this time reminiscent of Woods of Ypres and a vibe that fans of Pallbearer should have no trouble at all falling in love with.” – Doomed And Stoned

“dark and brooding doom “Primordial is a powerful and unforgiving EP that is certainly worthy of your time.”  – Astral Noize

“crisp, and aggressive guitar tones” – Permafrost Today

We have worked very hard in this album and we hope you enjoy it in full as much as we enjoyed creating it. Driven by a thirst for evolution, LAIKA spent two years constructing and writing its upcoming full-length album full with melodic hooks, ominous keys and lyrics that are bound to get stuck in listeners’ heads to an almost maddening degree.  Founded in 2009 and named after the Soviet dog who became one of the first animals to travel to space, the Winnipeg, MB six-piece return after a small hiatus since unleashing their self release in 2010 that saw the band hit the road hard and share the stage with the likes of All Shall Perish, Kataklysm, Necronomicon, Unleash the Archers and many more.  So brace yourself, as this fall, LAIKA will hit the scene hard, just like they did all those years ago.

“Laika combine the Gothenburg sound with a North American groove and intensity, the result is a giant slab of kick ass melodic death metal. Sommia the groups’ second full length release consists of 8 finely crafted songs and a dreamy and eloquent intro track called “The Restless Mind”. There some great guitar work on “Somnia” especially on tracks like “Fidelity” and the albums lone instrumental “Dream of Nothing”. The musicianship on this release is all-around solid. Vocalist Jordan Dorge has a powerful growl that cuts through the bands layered sound and the rhythm section add some crushing heaviness…a damn good melodic death metal album. If you like the classic Gothenburg sound do yourself a favor and pick up the latest release from Laika.” – Extreme Metal Television

“This Canadian sextet play old school inspired death metal, with synthesizer elements thrown in with the more melodic and heavier guitar parts. Laika, is not solely focused on playing fast and crazy, as their music contains tons of substance for starters, and their music is as unique as possible with synths used as a chilling backdrop to their progressive death metal.” – Explicitly Intense

“For an unsigned and independent band with only one other album under their belt, this really is a phenomenal release, and it really shines a light on how promising Laika’s future could be…the melodies and hooks they employ are the shining stars here.” – Metal Observer

“Melodic death metal after Dark Tranquillity’s heart with a touch of Dimmu Borgir for good measure.” – Eternal Terror

“We’ve been following the promising young group since 2011 and watching the development of this release with much anticipation.” – Metal Underground

“The track (Escalation of Terror) features tight riffs with old school influences injected into a modern approach.” – Bloody-Disgusting

“The music is energetic and soaring, building to an impassioned crescendo, but although it’s propelled by a flurry of jabbing, pulsating riffs, it also includes elements that aren’t exactly standard fare for melodic death metal — rock beats instead of blast beats, and a conjoining of rippling keyboards and grumbling bass notes that provide a captivating accent. Jordan Dorge’s mid-ranged, feral howls also provide a venomous edge without obscuring the lyrics. But what really seals the deal is the band’s knack for writing memorable melodies: “The Immortal” will stick in your head and beckon you back for more. It’s a strong teaser for a strong album.” – No Clean Singing

“Pounding Death Metal songs makes this album a worthwhile buy for the personal Death Metal collection.” – Metal-Only
