Saskatoon’s six piece punk rock cabaret The New Jacobin Club, a staple for nearly 20 years on the Canadian music scene as a must see bucket list band for their unbelievable gothic freak show performances, theatrical storylines, and multi-instrumentals (cello, theremien, keyboard, etc.) return with their latest creation ‘Soldiers of The Mark’ out today, September 2nd. Featuring ten hard hitting freak show tracks offered digitally on Amazon, HMV, iTunes, Bandcamp, plus exclusively available via the band’s web store http://www.newjacobinclub.com/webstore, the band is offering a 15 track deluxe edition of the album, vinyl and a hard cover companion book with a collection of the band’s lyrics, translations, concert posters, live photos, concept art plus contributions from Canadian artists Jess Thamnos, Kathyrn Trembach and Candiac Grosenick.

Horde (guitar/vocals) comments:

“This album is most collaborative thing we’ve ever done, and I think it’s the first time every member of this group has had their own musical voice shine through on a studio recording. Sharing lead vocals with Candi and working much more closely with Luminous on the string arrangements made the whole writing and recording process as exciting as if it was the first album we ever did.”

RatKing (drums) comments:

“As chaotic and unique as this band and its members are, when we play together we all somehow end up on the same page. I feel as though that really shows on this record.”

Biography:

Outcasts among wise men and fools alike, the New Jacobin Club is a fiendish group of musicians, poets, painters and performance artists who have been entertaining and provoking since the mid 1990’s. Combining seedy bohemian stage theatrics with bombastic art rock anthems has given the long lived ensemble a shocking and original edge that has attracted as much heated controversy as it has fiercely loyal fans.

Beginning as a power trio based in the Western Canadian city of Saskatoon, the New Jacobin Club signed to U.S. indie label Transparent Records in 1998 and released “A Lesson in Mortality”.   In 2003 “Retake the Throne,” their second full length album, became a minor Canadian college radio hit, creeping on to the national top 100 chart by the year’s end. By 2009, the NJC had become infamous for their provocative live show featuring unsettling freakshow stunts and what would become signature pyro tricks such as “exploding” cymbals and lighting microphone stands on fire. They released the epic gothic rock-opera “This Treason” the following year accompanied with “Inside the Cannibal Circus,” a DVD complete with concept video, live concert and candid documentary style footage. The double disc set was met with even more college radio success and sparked strong opinions from critics in Canada and worldwide.

The group is led by founding father and roaring frontman Xerxes Praetorius Horde (“The Horde” to his allies), singing opposite Poison Candi (theremin, percussion, vocals) and backed by The Luminous (electric cello),The Ruin (bass), The Rat King (drums) and Mistress Nagini (backing vocals, synth) . On stage the band is often joined by a colorful cast of collaboraters including performance artists Firecrotch Jones, Raunchy Rabies, Rima the Birdgirl, and drummer/programmer Eclipse.

Described as “Fiery and imposing while still retaining a degree of intelligence and fore-thought” (Exclaim! Canada’s independent music authority), “Energizing and engaging” (PureGrain Audio, USA) and “a gloriously black exercise in dark psychedelia” (BCFM Sunday Rock Show Review, UK), the New Jacobin Club never tire of dancing on genre boundaries with nods to classic goth, 70’s rock, power metal, blues, somber folk and even a hint of danceable industrial funk. The NJC has shared the stage with KMFDM, Voltaire, the Groovie Ghoulies, Nashville Pussy, the Nekromantix and countless others. Their signature vocal hooks and riffs have propelled them onto local and national Canadian independant radio charts, several movie soundtracks and even their own cable televised acoustic special.

Now in 2014, the band returns with their next shocker ‘Soldiers of The Mark’ due out on September 2nd as a self-release sure to make your ears cringe with its ten tracks of insanity. Along with this release, NJC are offering fans a very special and limited edition “Soldiers of the Mark” hardcover coffee-table format lyric book. It will be a joint effort with Calgary, AB based RunRabbit Entertainment. RunRabbit is notable for their independent short films (“Lilith” premiered at the 2013 Calgary Horrorcon and featured music by the New Jacobin Club prominently in the soundtrack) as well as their dark and provocatively themed photography. The book will contain not only the complete lyrics to the album, but an introduction, brief commentary written by band members and entourage, and full album credits. Contributing visual artists include Jess Thamnos (responsible for the iconic and menacing album cover ), Kathryn Trembach (band photographer) and Candice Grosenick (graphic artist behind the band’s concert posters and merchandise).

First editions of the book will be available by pre-order only and will include a special digital album download featuring the regular 10 song album plus 8 more bonus tracks. The deluxe 18 track version of the album will only be available directly from newjacobinclub.com and with the limited edition book.

“Their newest album, Soldiers of the Mark, is chock full of complex arrangements that utilize all of these instruments along with a headbanging rhythm section of guitar, bass and drums that often lead in to a chorus of both male and female vocals singing in harmony. Just as your mother always told you, never judge a book by it’s cover. Before you realize it, you’ll be headbanging along as you progress through Soldiers of the Mark. ” – Damnation Mag

“The band hits hard and heavy, giving you a kick to the forehead and making you notice them and the great talent that is on display here. This is an album that brings different sounds and genres together to make a glorious racket.” – Altered Frequencies

“Fiery and imposing while still retaining a degree of intelligence and fore-thought.” – Exclaim!

“Energizing and engaging!” – Pure Grain Audio

“a gloriously black exercise in dark psychedelia” – The BCFM Sunday Rock Show Review (UK)

“Worthy of a listen, if only to fuel your desire to see their amazing live show, which may change the way you see music forever.” BC Musician

“…a patchwork of Frankenstein of diverse influences, dueling guitars, enormous synths, pounding drums and bass, and most important, what really sets it apart – incredible musicianship.” – Planet S Mag

“…staright out of the Glenn Danzig (Misfits era) tradition – though much more engaging than Danzig ever was… If you ever wondered what Gwar’s interpretation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show might be like, The New Jacobin Club has your answer.” – Harvest Moon Music

“Romps with a breath that is vibrant and refreshing…wonderfully flamboyant, theatrical and wicked.” – Ring Master Review

Calgary, AB’s progressive power metal quartet VIATHYN has teamed up withMetal’Rules.com for the exclusive song premiere of their new track ‘Ageless Stranger’ off their upcoming album ‘Cynosure’ due out on October 7th.

“We chose Ageless Stranger to be the opening track on our new album Cynosure because it is high energy and hard hitting. With a big chorus, relentless rhythms, and some fun shredding, we feel it is the appropriate introduction to the remaining hour of diverse musical moments you will hear on Cynosure. The lyrics are inspired by the malevolent Stephen King character Randall Flagg, who has appeared in multiple works by King such as The Stand, The Eyes of the Dragon, and The Dark Tower.” comments guitarist Jacob Wright.

Viathyn – Mini – Doc – The Making of Cynosure – http://youtu.be/5XavVcQNd5s

Produced by VIATHYN‘s Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered by Sacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills), ‘Cynosure’ features nine epic assaulting tracks with intense guitar shredding and infectious chants that blend prog thrash, melo-death and power metal influences. With VIATHYN‘s 2010 ‘The Peregrine Way’ debut album praised for its innovative song-writing and fresh comparison to today’s power metal, it was only a matter of time for guitarist Jacob Wright to launch into song-writing mode and compose a majority of the material that would be recorded for this second full-length. Even through hindrances such as studio closings, computer crashes, losing a jam space, and a flood, VIATHYN was able to record their second album between August 2012 and February 2014. With the addition of 7-string guitars, some growl vocals, and an evolving influence, Cynosure’s songs are faster, more technical, and heavier, while maintaining a constant melodic and progressive presence.

Viathyn was formed in 2006 in Calgary, Alberta when brothers Tomislav and Dave Crnkovic (on guitar and drums respectively) joined forces with lead guitarist Jacob Wright. Having come from various influences such as Thrash, Melo-Death, and Power metal, they wrote a handful of early demo tracks to settle on an overall sound for the group. In 2008, they recorded the Demagogue EP in order to attract a permanent vocalist and bassist. Alex Kot joined on bass in 2009, and brought with him a unique playing style by using an 8-string NS stick. Tomislav took up vocal duties, and the line-up was complete. VIATHYN started playing live shows and has supported bands such as Stratovarius, Manegarm, Incantation, Rotten Sound, Into Eternity, and Skeletonwitch.

Quick Fact on band name: Playing off the word ‘Leviathan’, the guys settled on ‘Viathyn’, which has no actual definition in the English language, but when referring to the band can be taken to mean ‘progressive, melodic, grandiose, innovative and emotional’.

About:

Kryosphere at its core has always maintained strong connections with an old-school Death Metal sound, while embracing the new ideas of their younger peers. In short, they are a modern death metal band that knows how to draw a crowd across the massive gulf of metal fans.

Formed in 2008 by drummer Brent Bell (ex-Spawned by Rot, ex-Butcher’d) with line changes through its early years, Kryosphere finally solidified an identity with Brent Bell on drums, Stephanie Bell on bass, Dave Waram on guitar, and Davis Hay on vocals. Their debut EP “At Six Feet” was unleashed in 2011 and followed by their 2013 self-release EP “SOL”.

Great attention has been placed on song writing, and it shows on. The uniquely structured music of “SOL” has memorable riffs that are often lacking in today’s metal. Soaring solos and powerful vocals accompany thick bang along sections, while thumping bass drives the overall feeling of every song. Inventive and technical drumming steer the band through multiple time changes and differing movements.

“…the percussion underscores everything with rolling thunder, and the song includes hammering rhythms and a nice melodic hook shooting through the skin-flaying riffage…” – No Clean Singing review of At Six Feet EP

“Kryosphere are a seriously tight knit band, every single member on point. Because they are a four-piece with no lead guitarist, they are extremely rhythmic and are able to really play heavily…” -Crown of Viserys Live Review from Farmageddon 2014.

THRONE OF VENGEANCE Post Live Video From Calgary Metal Fest + Performing Alberta Festival Dates (Aug 29, 30, 31)

Earlier this summer, Throne of Vengeance had the honour of performing at this year’s Calgary Metal fest kickoff party where they recorded live video playing their track ‘Hands Tied’ to share with fans.

“‘We wanted to do a live show music video to give people a taste of TOV on stage and thought what better time to do it than during Calgary Metalfest?! The crazies come out in force and mosh pits rage for the better part of a week! If you ever had doubts about the local metal scene, this was a Wednesday. I also like to mention, we chose ‘Hands Tied’ as it’s a song close to our hearts that is loosely based on a close friends imprisonment for a victimless crime. It talks of the corrupt ways our judicial system torments and beats souls senseless.” comments drummer Trevor Cobb.

During their fest dates, TOV will be sharing the stage with fellow Canuck metal bands Golers, Death Toll Rising, Kryosphere, Comeback Kid, Protest The Hero, Nightseeker, Striker, The Wild! and Titans Eve.

About: Bridging the gap between metal and rock with help from dual guitar harmonies, pounding drum lines and wide-ranging vocal harmonies, Calgary’sThrone of Vengeance released their EP ‘Live Evil’ on October 19, 2013 that echoes the band’s signature thrash-tinged rock.

“‘Live Evil’ is “a collection of songs based on our experiences in the last two years, covering everything from a close friend’s imprisonment for a victim-less crime to the realization of humanity’s demise to the contrast between good and evil and life and death,” says drummer Trevor Cobb.

“If there’s anything we would like people to take away from the record, it’s that you should be your own person, do what makes you happy, be aware of your world and be real. We have the power to control our own destiny. Together, we are more powerful than any world leader.”

Having shared the stage with numerous legends over the years, including Kill Devil Hill, 3 Inches Of Blood and Steven Pearcy of RATT, Throne of Vengeance is ready to take things to a whole new level with Live Evil. Are you ready for a major ‘bangover’?

“Calgary metal band Throne of Vengeance rule the local rock scene with heart and soul…Recorded with Emmy-winning producer Paul Sabu, who recorded the band’s 2011 debut Flesh Engine and has worked with such names as David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Shania Twain and Prince, it captures Throne of Vengeance’s sound in a huge, warm and oh-so slick way. It’s all pro from the get-go.” – Calgary Herald

“the record follows their 2009 EP Toxic Black Cloud and 2011’s Flesh Engine and delivers the thrash-tinged classic metal for which the quartet is renowned.”  – Beatroute

“One of the keys to Throne Of Vengeance’s energy and drive lies in their passion…masters of their own domain…Their work is solid and I recommend you check them out” – Beatroute Magazine

“Calgary has an amazing music scene, and in my opinion, if you want to listen to great metal music in this city, this is the band that you need to see.” – X92.9 FM

“The band have hit the sweet spot of heaviness and melody that is hard to find. They have had a considerable amount of local success and LIVE EVIL will help them continue to build on that…this piece is rock solid release with excellent production and a good mix and balance of the instruments. The band tapped Paul Sabu (Only Child, ex-Malice) and countless production credits of big name artists like Alice Cooper. The songs range from mid-tempo to quite a bit faster, songs like ‘Hands Tied’ almost creeping almost in that power metal speed zone. The quartet use some gang-vocals a bit to back up vocalist Tommy. The band also will throw in a hint of acoustic guitar once in a while as well adding to the rock end of the spectrum.” – Metal-Rules

“…they joyously pay homage to their influences while creating their own distinctive sound…there are no lowlights and no filler tracks – each song is a mighty entity unto itself and worthy of your ears.” – Extreme Metal Television

“Whether you are a die-hard metal fan, or prefer rock n’ roll, Throne of Vengeance is the perfect blend of both… a great album to put on if you’re going to get together with friends, have a barbecue and drink beer. It feels like a summer album, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in feel-good thrash rock.” – Vancouver Metal

“The band is perfect for fans of classic metal such as Dio, Iron Maiden and Megadeth.” – Canadian Music News

““Live Evil” features seven hard rock songs including my two favourites, “Live Evil” and “Terminal Velocity”. One thing that I really enjoy about this album is that guitar reminds me of classic metal. You can feel the passion and drive in the songs.” – Canadian Beats

“Their shows are energetic, well-attended and the crowd absolutely loves them…I’ll babysit those maniacs anytime!..One of the few metal bands out there who are 100% convincing in that they genuinely LOVE what they do, and it shows.” – Philly Roach, Owner/Operator – The Distillery Rock & Roll Ballroom, Calgary

We’ve chosen a handful of passages that we feel are representative of the diversity and performances on the album and put them together into a preview medley to give our listeners a sneak peek.” comments guitarist Jacob Wright.

“Viathyn will instantly appeal to fans of traditional and power metal but they are much more than that. The songs have great headbanging, fist-pumping tempos, but each track also has deeply emotional and thoughtful undercurrent which warrants many listens.” – KING – Pitch Black Magazine

“It isn’t often that a band will blow away the listener with their debut album, but Viathyn does just that!” – Peter – Metal Psalter – Metal Psalter

“It’s been a long time since I’ve heard anything quite so eclectic as this band’s epic melding of the power, folk, speed, and progressive metals. They’re more alchemists than musicians, forging a new mold out of which many may be poured but few will actually fit.” – JDeathscript – Metal Call Out

“This is “Prog” metal at its finest.” – Cuz’N Mike – Heavy Metal Review

“…Viathyn have delivered a really solid, classy and mature metal album, that is as good as anything coming out of Europe these days” – JP – Metal Rules

“….This band really has their shit together, the solos are spectacular here, the sweeps are to die for, everything is good here…” – Metals Dead

“The musicianship is literally as good as it gets. It doesn’t matter which band member you would change, but the level of musical virtuosity wouldn’t get any higher.” – Poohkali – Rateyourmusic

Showcasing this year at MUSEXPO in Los Angeles and touring across Canada for most of 2013 with performances at Canadian Music Week, Indie Week, Alberta Beach Fest, Canal Flats in BC, Calgary’s Blankfest III and the Calgary Stampede Fest, Blais has gained strong comparisons to artists such as Sam Roberts, Matt Mays and Joel Plaskett. Blending elements of fiery rock and roll with smooth vintage soul blues, Blais has formed a sound so uniquely his own that one can’t help but become emotionally charged. The combination of his high energy live show and a passion for song writing is Blais’ formula for success, which thus far has been very well received by critics and the audiences in Canada and beyond that continue to grow in number.

“Frontman Matt Blais knows how to work a crowd and he is far from afraid of showing off his talents.” – The Scene Magazine (Live Review – Indie Week 2013)

“Over the past five years, Matt Blais has been generating a catalogue of material that is both emotive and relatable. His passionate live performances demonstrate eagerness to create heartfelt songs and nowhere is more evident than on his newest album, The Heartbeat, where a poetic personality fuses with growing life experience.” – Beatroute AB

“The name Matt Blais is a familiar one to those in the Calgary, Alberta music scene. Well known as talented and respected musician, Matt likes to break musical moulds, mixing rock, blues and soul for a sound all his own…I sat with what might be described as a “perma-grin” as he effortlessly played to every person in the room that night. A natural born entertainer, Matt is the real deal, and if it’s an entertainer you’re looking for all you have to do is follow The Heartbeat.” – The Portal Magazine

“…he is rock ‘n’ roll. And has been for some time, now, becoming a fave staple on the western Canadian scene, fronting his melodic barroom blues rock band, that calls on the jukebox of classic rock influences – many of who are in said club (the 27 club) – while making it distinctively his own….And crowds have shown him a great deal of love over the past several years, with Blais and band packing rooms across the Prairies and gaining notoriety by performing during Calgary’s Juno Fest shows in 2008 and winning local talent showcases such as the AMP Radio Rockstar competition.” – Calgary Herald

“Blais uses heavily-charged emotional lyrics as well as a gritty band behind him to produce a blues-slash-rock sounds, which has been commended by many local media sources. His sound is highlighted by a sometimes raspy voice, which helps to fill the total appearance of the band.” – Grande Prairie Herald

“Matt’s newest release, “The Heartbeat”, is packed with emotionally driven rock and roll that possesses a nostalgic presence that will fill the listener’s head with a sound that is not usually found in today’s music scene…What makes him and this song (Running) unique is his ability to create a vintage sound that is of his own with lyrics that fully compliment the song as a whole. Matt instantly catches the listener’s ear with an addictive chorus.” – Emurg.com

throne of vengeance - live evil

About: Bridging the gap between metal and rock with help from dual guitar harmonies, pounding drum lines and wide-ranging vocal harmonies, Calgary’s Throne of Vengeance released their EP ‘Live Evil’ on October 19, 2013 that echoes the band’s signature thrash-tinged rock.

Calgary, AB’s Throne of Vengeance has teamed up with Decible Magazine for the premiere of their new music video ‘Live Evil’, which can be viewed at the following link below.

“Live Evil is the title track from our 2013 EP. The song is a testament to karma involved in our everyday lives, with every action there are equal and unavoidable reactions. The video sheds light on Tommy (our lead singer)’s day as he goes about his business. He is faced with two choices and the resulting consequences are brought to life. Will he take a moral stand or let the evils of inaction consume him?” comments drummer Trevor Cobb.
