Wacken Metal Battle Canada Announce Calgary Round V Winner; Semi-Final Line-Up Complete; One Band To Rule Them All!
Wacken Metal Battle Canada is proud to announce Exit Strategy winner of Calgary’s fifth and last qualifying round that took place on Sat, May 3 at Lord Nelson’s Pub (1020 8 Ave SW.). The band will move on to compete at the city final and join the line up with Krepitus, False Flag, Vile Insignia, Black Pestilence on Saturday, May 17 @ Vern’s (622 8 Ave SW). Two bands from the Calgary city final will move to the Alberta final on Fri, May 23 @ Dicken’s Pub (1000 9 Ave SW.) where the bands will face off against two bands from Edmonton’s city final for one to win a spot at the national final in Toronto, ON on June 7th at Opera House (735 Queen St. E.). One independent Canadian metal band will be chosen to perform at the international Wacken Metal Battle during Wacken Open Air 2014 taking place from July 31- Aug 2.

About: Over 100 independent Canadian metal bands have been selected to participate in this year’s Wacken Metal Battle Canada line up in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The bands will compete during the months of March, April and May in 22 qualifying rounds, 6 semi-finals, and an Alberta final along with the national final being held on June 7th in Toronto, ON at Opera House.
One band will be chosen to represent the nation with highest honour at this year’s 2014 international battle at the world’s most prestigious metal festival Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany.
The finals will have the following representation and will be judged along with all other rounds by a panel of music industry representatives.
1 finalist from Vancouver, BC
1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off in Alberta final)
2 finalists from Toronto, ON
1 finalist from Montreal, QC
Last year’s battle was witnessed to Toronto, ON’s epic power/death metal band Crimson Shadows not only winning the 2013 Canadian final but conquering the international final and performing in front of thousands unknown to their behemoth sound. (Video of that champion set can be viewed here.) The band joined a list of Canadian heavyweights such as Voivod, Exciter, Razor, Annihilator, Anvil, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, 3 Inches of Bloods, Despised Icon and Danko Jones who have performed at the festival in years past.
Submissions were open from December 5, 2013 to January 31, 2014.

Toronto, ON based guitar aficionado and pedagogue Jeff Gunn is proud to announce he will be traveling across Canada for Hidden Sounds/Hidden Self workshops presented by Mayfair Music Publications and Long & McQuade to highlight key musical ideas from his book Hidden Sounds: Discover Your Own Method On Guitar Series. Gunn will be examining 10 life lessons learned through musical study and performance along with sharing personal stories from his own musical journey as a guitarist, arranger, songwriter, columnist, author, and professor that has taken him to all seven continents performing at stadiums and festivals with the likes of Emmanuel Jal (author of the bestseller War Child), Swizz Beatz, DMC, Jenna Andrews, Kae Sun, Serena Ryder, Arrested Development, Kate Todd while opening for Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, Janelle Monae, Feist, Karl Wolf, and K’naan.

The interactive 2hr workshop allows audience participation through rhythmic and guitar exercises. Pedagogue Jeff Gunn will teach you to effectively use positioning, tambora, artificial harmonics, percussion and silence to enhance your guitar skills. Essential lessons learned from simulating the sounds of instruments as diverse as the banjo and kora to imitating record scratching and volume pedal swells on guitar.
Gunn focuses on self-empowerment through music highlighting lessons learned from musical study and performance including: Practice, Reflection, Patience, Team Work, Persistence, Gratitude and many more. About Jeff Gunn:
As a Toronto-based freelance guitarist who has performed and taught music in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia, Jeff Gunn has performed at venues and festivals such as The World Bank, Capitol Hill, Canadian Music Week, Festival d’été de Québec, Toronto Center for the Arts, Pop Montreal and was recently featured on TED Talks and the TV Series “Guitar Picks” narrated by Kim Mitchell. He has toured and arranged with US artist Dwayne Britton (LML Music) who was honoured with ‘Top Ten Vocal Albums of 2008’ by Talkin’ Broadway. Their arrangement of Annie Lennox’s “Why” received much critical acclaim in the NY Daily News and in the UK by The Stage. Jeff contributed guitars to Morgan Sadler’s “Go On”, the winner of ‘Best Song 2009-2010’ at The Toronto Independent Music Awards, and he is featured on Emmanuel Jal’s single “Lose to Win” from his album See Me Mama (2012). A real humanitarian, he co-founded the Canadian Alliance Against Modern Slavery, which mission is to liberate contemporary slaves and combat slavery.
Receiving his BFA and BED in Music Education at York University, Canada, Gunn has published over 60 articles in Canada, the US, UK and in Thailand, in fields as diverse as music, travel, fashion and history. He was most recently published in Canadian Musician, holds a “guitar tips” column with The Guitar Magazine in Thailand, served as a “guitar tips” and “music travel” columnist with Muzik Etc (2008-2011), and has contributed to Thai Classic Guitar Magazine, Fashion Studio 7, YYZ Living, Verge Magazine and The Journal of World History (University of Hawaii Press).
Years of practice, experimentation and implementation has led Jeff to share his vision with guitar lovers of all ages and levels of performance by putting his knowledge on paper and through masterclasses.

Following ‘Pi Nature’, Ninjaspy has toured across Canada on multiple occasions including touring Japan in 2010 (watch video here) winning over legions of fans along the way. In 2013, they unleashed their musical graphic novel ‘No Kata’ with the single ‘Skaingkh (The Skank)’ (animated version can be viewed below).

Ninjaspy arose with the dawn of the year of six, embodied by the Triad in Blood: Vocalist/Guitarist Joel Parent, Drummer Adam Parent and Bassist Tim Parent. Rising above the mire of their faceless six year muse, they have focused their sights on the mission objectives now at hand: Swift, surgical amalgamation of a spectrum of styles and the subsequent eradication of narrow mindedness. Advocating total freedom of expression and infiltrating every earthen sinew in their chosen path in order to stay grounded and facilitate real connections with others; interactions that are crucial for a meaningful human existence. With the help of prolific producers, GGGarth Richardson and Ben Kaplan, they entered the next level of their career, releasing their debut cd πature (Pi Nature) in the fall of 2007. Ever reworking new ideas to their utmost potential, 2013 saw the release of the follow-up multi-media EP/Graphic Novella “NINJASPY NO KATA” with production by the same team of producers.
Equipped and, indeed, armed with their own musical weaponry, (a derivation of hardcore, ska, grunge, reggae, funk and more) Ninjaspy aim to engage people with radical ideas on a level plane. And above all else, to reiterate to people over and again, the importance of victory in the eternal conflict with the skank; the vicious and relentless evil that lives in every human being. The skank that is overcome each time Ninjaspy has the honour of sharing their crafts with people in a live environment, where dancing destroys the enemy. The enemy whose defeat is apparent as one witnesses the total freedom felt at every show by the people in the pit who rise up to throw the skank down.

About: Over 100 independent Canadian metal bands have been selected to participate in this year’s Wacken Metal Battle Canada line up in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The bands will compete during the months of March, April and May in 22 qualifying rounds, 6 semi-finals, and an Alberta final along with the national final being held on June 7th in Toronto, ON at Opera House.
One band will be chosen to represent the nation with highest honour at this year’s 2014 international battle at the world’s most prestigious metal festival Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany.
The finals will have the following representation and will be judged along with all other rounds by a panel of music industry representatives.
1 finalist from Vancouver, BC
1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off in Alberta final)
2 finalists from Toronto, ON
1 finalist from Montreal, QC
Last year’s battle was witnessed to Toronto, ON’s epic power/death metal band Crimson Shadows not only winning the 2013 Canadian final but conquering the international final and performing in front of thousands unknown to their behemoth sound. The band joined a list of Canadian heavyweights such as Voivod, Exciter, Razor, Annihilator, Anvil, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, 3 Inches of Bloods, Despised Icon and Danko Jones who have performed at the festival in years past.
Submissions were open from December 5, 2013 to January 31, 2014.

Vancouver, BC’s high flying, super entertaining, much adored cross breed of metal and ska, NINJASPY (a band of brothers literally), are proud to announce their ‘Jump Ya Bones Tour’ in support of their crowd funding efforts for their next full length album since releasing their cult followed debut ‘Pi Nature’ in 2007 produced by GGGarth Richardson and Ben Kaplan.
“It has been 7 years since we’ve put out a full length record. The long wait ends this spring 2014, as we prepare to go into the studio with brand new material this May. But before we do, we need your support to make this new album a reality, and you’ll have many opportunities to throw us a few bones during the IndieGogo Campaign beginning April 1st and at any of the Western Canadian tour dates where we will perform all of our new songs.” states the band.
Following ‘Pi Nature’, Ninjaspy has toured across Canada on multiple occasions plus touring Japan in 2010 (watch video here), winning over legions of fans along the way. About: Featuring a combination of death and thrash metal, the Edmonton-based band are known to devastate their audiences with their high octane performances that has lead them to share the stage over the years with high profile names such as Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, The Haunted, and Aborted (to name a few).
Originally formed in 2003 in Stony Plain, AB, Canada, Death Toll Rising have been grinding the Western Canadian metal scene steadily, gaining huge momentum over the last 3 years. New addition Tylor Dory on guitars has introduced a technical and progressive element to the band they have not had in the past. Add in the intense and relentless drumming provided by Bryan Newbury (recently recruited by Canadian prog/death powerhouse INTO ETERNITY), as well as the well-rounded rhythm provided by Drew Copland on guitar and Mike Puff on bass, and you get a monster that is only now being unleashed upon the masses with vocalist Jesse Berube topping things off with a combination of brutal death growls and Tomas Lindberg-esqe high shrieks, which will be plenty noticeable on their new album ‘Infection Legacy’.

Touring across Canada for most of 2013 with performances at Canadian Music Week, Indie Week, Alberta Beach Fest, Canal Flats in BC, Calgary’s Blankfest III and the Calgary Stampede Fest where he opened for The Watchmen, Blais has gained strong comparisons to artists such as Sam Roberts, Matt Mays and Joel Plaskett. Blending elements of fiery rock and roll with smooth vintage soul blues, Blais has formed a sound so uniquely his own that one can’t help but become emotionally charged. Last year’s first ever Wacken Metal Battle Canada was witness to Toronto, ON’s epic power/death metal band Crimson Shadows not only winning the 2013 Canadian final but conquering the international final in Wacken, Germany where they performed in front of thousands unknown to their behemoth sound of metal.
