Originally unleashed in September 2019 on Curtain Call Records, Raleigh, NC’s Aittala will be re-releasing their fifth album via Exitus Stratagem Records, who also recently released the band’s follow-up and sixth full-length “Live To Regret” this past November.

Led by vocalist and guitarist, Eric Aittala, with bassist Ali Lugo and drummer Gary ‘Zeus’ Smith, “False Pretenses” features the trio’s unique stamp of infused classic rock licks, thrash, doom, and sludge along with progressive layers and hard rock grooves.

“When we offered up this album, I still believe it is one of the best Aittala recordings we have done,” Eric Aittala states. “Of course, all bands make that claim when their new album is released, but I still really mean it. If nothing else, it is one of the best-sounding Aittala albums. When we wrote it, we used an entirely different approach for recording, mixing, and mastering. Even with its re-release, I’m still really excited for people who have still not heard it yet.”

Rounding out the album’s track listing is “Different Day”, “Disowned”, “Infamy”, “How Much Longer”, “Nemesis”, “Afterthought”, “They Live”, “Funeral Procession” and “Debt”. Eric notes, “The album’s title comes from the idea that the songs have an underlying theme of misrepresentation”.

Drummer Gary Smith believes those who have not listened to the album, are in for a treat.

“When we made this album, we really stepped it up and I truly believe it is a record for a much larger audience than the previous four we released. There’s something for everyone on it that’s a fan of good metal.”

Recommended for fans of Baroness, Crowbar, and Katatonia, the re-release of “False Pretenses” is due out on February 28th via Exitus Stratagem Records and can be pre-saved at https://hypeddit.com/aittala/falsepretenses.

About: The music of AITTALA (pronounced ‘EYE-tah-la’) crosses many metal genres; it’s hard to put it into just one category. The sound infuses elements of classic heavy metal, doom, progressive, power, thrash, and hard rock with lyrics drawing inspiration from the darker side of the human condition. The AITTALA sound has been cited for being unique which is no easy feat in the metal genre.

The first version of AITTALA was formed in 1991 while Eric Aittala was living in Holland. With fellow American Tim on vocals and Dutch bandmates Ed (drums) and Jon (bass), the band became a staple of the Dutch metal scene.

With the release of the 3-song EP ‘Selling Heaven’ in the summer of 1993, AITTALA opened for such bands as THE GATHERING and SADIST. Unfortunately, as the demo started to create a buzz in the underground European metal scene, Eric had to return to the US and disbanded AITTALA.

Over the next decade or so, Eric played in numerous bands (TRIBE, MAGNETHEAD, DWELL) and lost focus on AITTALA.

Near the end of the 00s, Eric decided it was time to refocus his efforts on the AITTALA brand. From 2009 to 2016, AITTALA released 4 full-length albums: ‘Bed of Thorns’ (2009), ‘Haunt Your Flesh’ (2011), ‘Effigy’ (2014), and ‘American Nightmare’ (2016). Each album showcases a natural progression of songwriting and lyrical content but retains the core AITTALA sound and evolves it.

In 2019, AITTALA signed with Curtain Call Records and released the band’s fifth full-length album ‘False Pretenses’. It was ten brand new songs that not only continued the songwriting evolution of heavier but catchy songs but also sonically. AITTALA used an entirely different approach for recording, mixing, and mastering to create the best AITTALA album to date.

The current lineup of AITTALA consists of Gary ‘Zeus’ Smith (THE FIFTH, ex-MR BLACKWELL) on drums and Ali Lugo (ex-AGE OF DESPAIR) on bass.

They continue to write, record, and tour to bring AITTALA to the masses, recently unleashing their sixth studio album entitled “Live To Regret” via label Exitus Stratagem Records on November 7, 2022, and the re-release of their 2019 album “false Pretenses” out on February 28, 2023, also through Exitus Stratagem Records.

“Their new album, “False Pretenses”, leans heavy on the Doom and Goth side of their listed influences but makes some interesting style choices within the genre.” – Metal Temple (False Pretenses)

“In my opinion, this is by far their best effort. Highlight tracks for me are: “Different Day”, “Black Coffin” and “Debt”. In the metal world, bands can start to sound the same and Aittala steps outside of the box. With clear crisp vocals, grinding rhythms and well executed leads, this band is definitely in a league of their own.” – That Metal Channel (False Pretenses)

“The common element in all the songs is the potent groove. On tracks like “Black Coffin” and “Afterthought” stoner/doom is at the forefront, while songs such as “Disowned” have a more traditional metal vibe. There are progressive influences on “How Much Longer,” while the closer “Debt” is a piano based ballad. Even with so many disparate styles, Aittala bring everything together into a cohesive whole.” – Heavy Music Headquarters (False Pretenses)

“Aittala Offer Powerful Pandemic Post-Mortem on ‘Live to Regret’… Stick it on a playlist with Apostle of Solitude, Crowbar, Famyne, and Paradise Lost, with a dash of Slayer for good measure.” – Doomed and Stoned

“One of the best albums for 2022” (Live to Regret) – 666MrDoom YouYube Channel

“This platter is heavy melodic ear candy that drips with deep and mesmeric face-melting tones and grinding rhythms.” (Live to Regret) – The Metal Gods Meltdown

As their name foretells, Toronto heavy metallers PALE MARE are stampeding across Eastern Canada (QC/PEI/NS/NB) this May bringing with them death in the form of crushing, fuzzy groove over a total of nine stops.

Centered around big loud riffs, PALE MARE can be defined as thick and groovy with their upcoming album that is a “substantial step up from the first effort”, 2017’s self-titled EP released via Medusa Crush Records. The band explains further:

“The songs are heavier, louder, groovier, more crushing and they showcase a much more diverse side of the band, where we are able to explore different sonic territory. When we hit the road, fans will get some new sounds to feast on!”

Quoting their music as “loud, intense, ugly and heavy as fuck”, PALE MARE looks forward to devastating fans especially those who also enjoy Mastodon, Baroness and High On Fire.

“When fans listen to the music we want to a black hole to tear open in their mind and suck all the mundane dregs of life into the nothingness of the void, and the listener can experience freedom as they surrender to the sheer power and might of the riffs and the music.”

Fans can accept their fate on the following tour stops listed below.

PALE MARE has shared the stage with Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Windhand, Satans Satyres, Weedeater, Mutoid Man, Serial Hawk, Black Wizard, King Buffalo and Perturbator.

PALE MARE‘s 2017 self-titled EP is available for stream and download on Spotify, iTunes, Youtube plus cassette and vinyl on Bandcamp.

About:

Pale Mare is a Toronto-based heavy metal band, born out of the desire to play music that is loud, aggressive, and full of thick groovy riffs.  The band released their self-titled EP in November of 2017 through Medusa Crush Records and was met with high praise from the likes of Metal Hammer, Exclaim!, and many more.

Having provided local support for Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Windhand, Satans Satyres, Weedeater, Serial Hawk, Black Wizard, King Buffalo, Set and Setting and Perturbator, Pale Mare have established themselves in their home town of Toronto as a massive force to be reckoned with, and have attracted a loyal fan base through relentlessly crushing live performances. Their sound has been likened to early Baroness, High On Fire, Mastodon, and Black Tusk; full of fire, attitude, brimstone, tone, and soul.

– 30 –

“Sounding like Motorhead developing a penchant for doom, this self-titled EP is raw, heavy and filthy in the best possible way.” – Metal Hammer

“Filled with dense, High On Fire-style groove-laden riffs, the release combines crushing aggression with doomy rhythms and harsh noisy soundscapes” – Exclaim!

Fuzz Stoners HOWLING GIANT Announce “Desert of Desolation Tour” + Premiere Full EP via Heavy Blog Is Heavy

Return With Fuzz Rock Sequel “Black Hole Space Wizard: Part 2” Due Out August 25th

New Video “The Pioneer”

Writing tunes about space travel, doomed seafarers and a sentient android hellbent for a camel killing death crusade, Nashville’s HOWLING GIANT shared last August part one of their three part “Black Hole Space Wizard” concept record series. A year later, the nerd power trio returns with part two of the adventure set for release on August 25th. Playing self-indulgent, drop-tuned, fuzzed out riffs “Black Hole Space Wizard: Part 2” is again produced by the band, mixed by Kim Wheeler and mastered by Chris Fasco. The EP features six cosmic progressive travels of ‘The Pioneer’ continuing his quest for self-discovery and purpose on the husk planet, Earth.

Teaming up with Heavy Blog Is Heavy, the fuzz rock trio is premiering the full stream of the new EP at the following link: http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2017/08/23/premiere-take-an-intergalactic-voyage-on-howling-giants-black-hole-space-wizard-part-2/

“Hopefully for our returning fans, it is accepted with open arms and an open mind. As Part 2 of the 3 piece saga, this EP was meant to focus on the travels and trials of The Pioneer, protagonist, and last of mankind. The music reflects his growth and self discovery on a post-apocalyptic planet Earth. To new fans/fresh ears, we’d like to invite them into the Black Hole Space Wizard universe through fat stomping riffs, spacey grooves, accessible vocal melody and juicy, pulpy sci-fi madness. We always try to refine our song writing and take one step into new territory with each release, pulling stylistically from whatever inspires us in the moment. Our recorded music is our best interpretation of the sounds we hear in our heads, and our goal is to make our sonic visions clearer with each release.” says drummer Zach Wheeler.

About:

HOWLING GIANT! The very name summons up mental images of a huge mutated orc-warrior astride an even more gigantic mastodon, ready to bring death, doom, damnation and destruction (and many other things beginning with “d”) down upon its enemies.

Names matter, and something magical happened when three nerds obsessed with all that is fuzzed-out, riffed-out, and heavy came together to compose cosmic odes to space travel, doomed sea-farers, and even an android on a camel-killing crusade (what harm did the poor camel ever do to him?), under the name HOWLING GIANT.

Drummer Zach Wheeler says the name is no accident and reflects the band’s music.

“Howling Giant sounds a lot like a loud beast, which is what we strive to do musically. We aim to create a full sound that people might normally expect from a five-piece rather than a power-trio.”

Indeed, by employing the three-piece format, HOWLING GIANT is following in the footsteps of legends like Motorhead, MC5, Cream, and Corrosion of Conformity; good company to be in! As the band’s philosophy would have it wisely: “Teamwork makes the dream work.”

Hailing from Nashville, HOWLING GIANT obviously had some special metal immunity to all the country and western music in the air. The boys started jamming at school in Boston with an aim to move away from overtly serious music and have fun, describing their music accurately as “loud, energetic, heavy, melodic, and cosmic.”

Overall, HOWLING GIANT’s music forms part of a fascinating Black Hole Space Wizard concept EP series, which the trio returns with Part 2 due out on August 25th, 2017 to follow Part 1 released almost exactly a year prior.

If you are one of the many that wishes Mastodon had continued in the cosmic, crushing progressive manner of Crack The Skye and Blood Mountain, HOWLING GIANT is your dream band!
(bio written by Steve Earles)

“What a righteous discovery these guys are. Born out of some space fuzz chamber and dropped down on Nashville, Tennessee, Howling Giant’s form of metal is a unique and eclectic fairy tale trip through the stars.” – New Noise Magazine

“That paragraph you just finished reading (or totally skipped over, fuckin’ whatever) was extremely hard for me to create because it was so fucking difficult to encapsulate how much of a fucking trip this record is. If there is to be a Part 2 to “Black Hole Space Wizard” then consider my pants shat and my wallet thrown at my monitor because I’d pay so much money for that shit.” –  Head Banger Reviews

“Sonically, Howling Giant seem to be the missing link between Monster Truck and Mastodon, and they top it off with whacked-out, sci-fi lyrics about outer space.” – Hellbound

“Rocketing across the interstellar airways on a stellar path of massive grooves, ones fueled by the thrust of the ever-powerful riff and its incendiary combustion, Howling Giant make themselves heard throughout the cosmos on these four out-of-this-world tracks.” – Metal Nexus

“If modern day Mastodon got together with Crobot, added some Monster Truck style Hammond Organ and Elder’s gift for writing something fuzzy and glorious, then to be honest, it’d probably sound a little like this.” – Maximum Volume Music

“If you want to have an ear wedding you mix the sounds of old and new to make something fresh. Nashville’s own Howling Giant have skipped the wedding and went straight to the honeymoon with sounds as old as OG Sabbath to Baroness, Red Fang with a little Pelican and CKY mixed in. Totally familiar, yet totally fresh.” – Zombie Tap Dance

About:HOWLING GIANT! The very name summons up mental images of a huge mutated orc-warrior astride an even more gigantic mastodon, ready to bring death, doom, damnation and destruction (and many other things beginning with “d”) down upon its enemies.Names matter, and something magical happened when three nerds obsessed with all that is fuzzed-out, riffed-out, and heavy came together to compose cosmic odes to space travel, doomed sea-farers, and even an android on a camel-killing crusade (what harm did the poor camel ever do to him?), under the name HOWLING GIANT.Drummer Zach Wheeler says the name is no accident and reflects the band’s music.

We aim to create a full sound that people might normally expect from a five-piece rather than a power-trio.” Indeed, by employing the three-piece format, Howling Giant is following in the footsteps of legends like Motorhead, MC5, Cream, and Corrosion of Conformity; good company to be in!

Overall, Howling Giant’s music forms part of a fascinating Black Hole Space Wizard concept EP series. As guitarist Tom Polzine explains, “Musically we aim to write songs that are melodic, catchy, and head bang-able. As a concept series, we strive to conjure up space-themed imagery of heroes and villains at war, introducing the story and setting the scene of things to come within the Black Hole Space Wizard Universe. We’re not trying to spell out the entire story so much as we are creating scenes to provoke your imagination.”

Writing is very much a collaborative effort. “We usually come up with a general theme, then we write riffs and musical passages to support said theme. After that, we work on overall arrangements to create a nice flow and build within the song. Lyrics and vocal melodies come last as an icing on a very meaty cake. We find the flow of an album is just as important as the flow of an individual song and we strive to make each song unique. We wanted to include a combination of heavy, spacey, doom, and thrash, all wrapped up in a crunchy garage-sounding blanket. Fans can expect two more EPs within the Black Hole Space Wizard Universe. And with an overflowing riff bank, who knows how long we’ll go.”

Such far-out music deserves far-out lyrics, and Howling Giant is prepared to go to extreme lengths to get them. As bassist Roger Marks reveals, “We have a strict regimen of smashing our heads into walls daily until lyrics finally come to us.” As for inspiration, “We are inspired by science fiction and occult rituals, as well as books, movies, and other music.”

As part of an overall concept, the EP paints four distinct scenes.

The pinnacle of mankind.
An exodus from Earth.
The Black Hole Space Wizard destroying everything.
A lone survivor trapped on a ravaged Mother Earth.

In Roger’s own words, “The first track is a little more progressive, packed with riffs both dark and triumphant. The second track is all about build and groove. The third track is thrash, metal, and destructive. The final track is spacey with doom elements.”
Overall, it you are one of the many that wishes Mastodon had continued in the cosmic, crushing progressive manner of Crack The Skye and Blood Mountain, Howling Giant is your dream band!

OUT NOW! ADRENECHROME Unleash Their ‘Tales From Adrenechrome’

L-R – Matt Copeland – Drums | Tim Kehoe – Guitar | Mike Van Dyk – Bass | Chris Friesen – Guitar /Vocals  (photo credit Dave Saunders)

Orillia, ON’s Adrenechrome are hurtling forward like zombies with a hunger for flesh looking to create good old-fashioned rock n’ roll infused with groove and peppered with metal. The group features Chris Friesen dominating on guitar and lead vocals, Tim Kehoe who shreds guitar and haunting vocal work, Matt Copeland thrashing the drums, and Mike Van Dyk creating groovy basslines. Their name inspires a frantic, adrenaline fueled misadventure and is a direct reference to a fictional drug in the film “Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas”.

These heavy metal monsters started in 2010 and rode like the four horsemen to devour every audience they could around Canada. Their songwriting swings like an unhinged pendulum between rapid, brief works to heavy, ten-tonne brick tunes. Members are veterans of the music scene, coming from various acts like Gaswitch, Shimmy Rabbits, and The Doug Trucker Band. Live, the band is tight and strictly a “no frills” affair — this means no make up or gimmicks, just straight-forward, kick-ass metal.

The band’s new album ‘Tales From Adrenechrome’ is now officially out as of November 27, 2015 to follow up their 2012 debut ‘Hideous Appetites’ and is their most abstract, spastic, and explosive release to date. This album is established on heavy riffs, roaring drums, smooth bass lines, and wrapped up with lyrical themes that combine personal experience with fantasy, sci fi, and classic literature plus its epic album artwork by graphic artist Clöwnbäbÿ. This album is reserved for only those who can handle the high velocity heavy metal adventure that is Adrenechrome! Picture a hypothetical bastard child of Mastodon and Baroness!

“We are beyond pleased with the warm response “Tales From Adrenechrome” has received and we hope everyone finds it as “fun” a record to listen to, as we found it was to make 🙂 much love all see you out on the road. The chrome boys.” comments vocalist/ guitarist Chris Friesen.
