GrillFest made a name for itself on the local scene in Midvale and Salt Lake City, Utah, in the early 2010s, with the last one being held in 2013. Founded by John Yelland of Judicator as a backyard festival that was organized by his first band, Disforia, GrillFest is now being revitalized. Supported by Judicator and the City of Midvale, and the Midvale Main Business Alliance. This year’s 2025 event will shut down Main Street and transform it into a full-scale festival. Local businesses will host pop-ups, and they’re curating a lineup of vendors offering savory food, desserts, and more. And of course, the music will remain diverse, dynamic, and electrifying.

Being hosted on August 22nd and 23rd at The Pearl on Main in Midvale, Utah, Grillfest ’25 is more than just an event—it’s a rekindling of something special. It’s a gathering for artists and fans who crave authenticity, connection, and experiences to cherish for the rest of their lives.

“Grillfest isn’t just another music festival—it’s a community movement built by fans—for fans. We’re bringing together some of the best underground metal acts from across the West, pairing them with real smokehouse BBQ and a no-frills, all-heart atmosphere. Our goal is to grow something truly special here in Utah: a boutique-style festival that stays loud, stays local, and gives both rising bands and dedicated fans a place to call home,” adds John Yelland, Founder of Grillfest and Vocalist of Judicator.

About The Headliners:

Judicator isn’t just a power metal band — it’s a reckoning with history and mortality, plumbing the depths of the human condition one album at a time.

Since their serendipitous formation in 2012, when singer John Yelland and guitarist Alicia Cordisco (ex-Judicator, Transgressive) crossed paths at a Blind Guardian concert, the band has been on a relentless journey to craft concept albums that confront existential anxiety in its many forms. From character studies of historical figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and Frederick the Great, to the deeply personal At the Expense of Humanity, which recounts Yelland’s experience losing his brother to cancer, Judicator brings history and humanity into sharp focus.

Rooted in Salt Lake City, Judicator has produced six albums over the course of a decade, with their latest opus, Concord, set to release in early 2025. The band’s blend of thought-provoking lyrics, memorable riffs, and charismatic energy has earned them a loyal following and some surreal milestones, like featuring Hansi Kürsch as a guest vocalist on 2018’s The Last Emperor and opening for Blind Guardian in Salt Lake City during the God Machine North American tour in 2024.

While co-founding member Alicia Cordisco departed in 2020, her legacy remains an integral part of Judicator’s DNA. Today, the band continues to push boundaries as a five-piece power metal powerhouse, weaving tales that are as epic as they are intimate.

Judicator’s music seeks to hold a mirror up to life’s greatest struggles and triumphs, whether great or small, whether grand historical sagas or intimate struggles with mortality. Judicator invites you to grapple with the inevitable, together, one song at a time.

USA-based prog rockers Advent Horizon are making waves in the progressive music world and beyond after the release of their new album “A Cell To Call Home.”

Featuring guest performances from Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Dave Meros (Spock’s Beard), Randy McStine (Porcupine Tree), and Jared Hill (Snow Child), plus album and single artwork by Travis Smith (Opeth, Devin Townsend), “A Cell To Call Home” has received high praise internationally from fans and reviewers alike. ProgRadio named “A Cell To Call Home” their 2023 “Album of the year”, while ProgReport and Sonic Perspectives ranked it at #5 and #4 respectively on their “Best of 2023” lists.

Much of 2024 was spent on the road, with performances across the USA. At Progstock in October 2024, “A Cell To Call Home” was performed live in its entirety and was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from festival attendees and multiple press outlets, with one reviewer writing, “something about this act really felt unusually magical.”

Following the success of their 2024 live appearances, Advent Horizon has returned to the studio and is currently recording their 4th full-length studio album, which features a side-long 20-minute epic track and 5 other heavy-hitting progressive rock/metal songs.

Silver Talon emerged from the remnants of the Portland heavy metal group Spellcaster after their disbandment in 2017. Seeking a sonic identity that was heavier and more aggressive, guitarist Bryce VanHoosen spearheaded the project and enlisted vocalist Wyatt Howell. Howell’s addition refined Silver Talon’s identity, setting the band distinctly apart from its predecessor. By late 2018, the band released their acclaimed debut EP, ‘Becoming A Demon.’

This release encapsulated the band’s uncompromising, raw-edged sound across five original tracks. Notably, it featured a collaboration with Jeff Loomis (Arch Enemy / Nevermore), who delivered a scorching guitar solo for a cover of Sanctuary’s cult classic, ‘Battle Angels.’ Despite a few lineup changes, the band navigated a tumultuous 2019, ultimately solidifying their lineup with guitarist Devon Miller and bassist Walter Hartzell, enhancing their power and versatility.

Throughout the 2020 pandemic, Silver Talon remained focused and productive, culminating in the release of ‘Deceiver, I Am,’ the lead single off their debut album ‘Decadence and Decay,’ in early December. This marked a new phase for the band, showcasing deeper arrangements, an expansive sound, and intricate musical layering.

In May of 2021, the full debut album ‘Decadence and Decay’ dropped, earning rave reviews and securing spots on both Decibel Magazine and Bandcamp’s top metal albums of the year lists. No Clean Singing praised the band’s songwriting and technical prowess, stating, “it’s the band’s songwriting (coupled with their obvious artistic abilities and technical talents) which really makes this record stand out from the crowd.” The album even boasted a collaboration with King Diamond’s main axeman, Andy La Rocque, on the track ‘Resistance 2029.’

The post-pandemic era brought touring opportunities in support of ‘Decadence and Decay,’ including appearances at Hell’s Heroes and Legions of Metal festivals, alongside shows across the United States with metal legends such as Cynic, Atheist, and Exmortus.

As 2023 unfolds, the band is diligently crafting their sophomore album, scheduled for release on M-Theory Audio.

Silver Talon’s music blends a brooding and dark approach to heavy metal with classic influences, paying homage to revered acts like King Diamond, Nevermore, Savatage, Judas Priest, and Alice in Chains, among others.

Please note: Main Street in front of the festival will be cordoned off, however, and so there will be a level of foot traffic—attendees who are only interested in the local business pop-ups, food trucks, and so on, but not the performances, which take place inside the venue.

About GrillFest:

GrillFest began humbly in the early 2010s as a backyard festival organized by John Yelland’s first band, Disforia. Held at their bassist’s house, it was a laid-back, community-driven celebration of local music, friendship, and grilling. They invited fellow bands of all styles—metal, punk, acoustic, death metal—and played from noon until noise curfew! There were no genre boundaries, no egos—just artists, fans, and neighbors coming together in an atmosphere that felt more like a family reunion than a festival.

As the years passed and life took them in different directions, Disforia disbanded, and the original Grillfest faded into memory. But its spirit never left John. That sense of connection, creativity, and grassroots joy is something he carried with him, and now, he is thrilled to bring it back in 2025.

About The Organizers:

John Yelland is the powerhouse frontman of Salt Lake City’s acclaimed power metal band Judicator, known for his soaring vocals and emotionally rich storytelling across seven studio albums. He’s also the voice of the epic doom project Behölder, and formerly of sci-fi power metal act Dire Peril. With collaborations ranging from Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch to his genre-bending concept albums, Yelland is one of the most distinctive voices in modern metal. This year, he brings that fire home to Grillfest, joining a lineup built by and for foodies who love chill vibes and good music.

Hosted in the barren expanse of sculpted sandstone, wind-carved hoodoos, and the vast canyons of Alberta, Canada’s badlands, one of the country’s loudest decibel-breaking extreme music events, Loud As Hell Open Air Festival returns for its 13th edition in Drumheller, AB from August 1st to 3rd at the Dinosaurs Down Stampede to showcase the best up-and-coming Canadian and international talent to roar through the country’s largest dinosaur fossil grounds.

This year’s festivities will witness technical death metal masters Revocation headline the Sunday, August 3rd, lineup. The band unveiled their latest 2025 single and music video “Confines of Infinity,” featuring brutal guest vocals from Cattle Decapitation’s Travis Ryan. The single also marks the debut of a new Revocation lineup that sees vocalist and guitarist Dave Davidson joined by drummer Ash Pearson–who has been in the band since 2015–bassist Alex Weber, and guitarist Harry Lannon. Revocation formed in 2006, and their self-released debut, Empire of the Obscene, came out in 2008. Since then, they’ve released seven critically acclaimed albums and have toured the world, bringing their technically charged, high-energy extreme metal to rabid fans in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Music Video – Confines of Infinity (ft. Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation) – https://youtu.be/h6Nez7ikOm4

Also on the Sunday lineup will be Insurrection, the powerhouse metal band from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. Formed over 20 years ago (2003), the band is known for its intense and energetic performances. Their sound is a unique twist of groovy death metal mixed with a healthy dose of thrash energy. The band has released several albums, including “Prologue” (2008), “Fracture” (2010), “Prototype” (2013), “Extraction” (2017), and “Obsolescence” (2024) (Bam Co. Heavy). Their music often addresses social and political themes through bilingual lyrics in both English and French. The band has gained a notable reputation on stage throughout Canada with tours covering coast to coast, including performances at festivals such as Montebello Rockfest, Trois-Rivières Metalfest, and Decimate Metalfest. Music Video – The Gathering – https://youtu.be/OloWe37IY04

Headlining Saturday, Aug 2nd, Montreal, QC’s First Fragment will display their virtuosity and demonstrate why they are so beloved globally for their Neoclassical/Technical Extreme Metal. The band broke ground with their debut EP “The Afterthought Ecstasy” (2010). Their latest two albums, “Dasein” (2016), “Gloire éternelle(2021), and the latest instrumental compilation record, “Le Recueuil Des Âges” (2024), have been released on Unique Leader Records. Music Video – Pantheum – https://youtu.be/4mU_qLoa3Ds

Saturday will also feature LAH alumni Gorgatron, guttural Death Metal out of Fargo, North Dakota. Their sound is based on a “love of the riff” approach to writing and is rooted in the old-school stylings of Death Metal and Thrash. They have honed their style and work ethic with rigorous DIY tours across the States, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. They have a slew of records under their belts with their latest “Sentience Revoked” (2024) (Redefining Darkness Records) and just this past January, they unleashed a digital EP “Live From the Basement”. It was originally set to be released on Adult Swim’s ‘Fish Center Live’ in 2020, but was shelved due to Adult Swim shutting down their livestream division that same year. Music Video – Absorbency – https://youtu.be/oZ_0uqAh5fc

The festival’s first day on Friday, Aug 1st, will be headlined by hip-hop-influenced deathcore gutter gang Filth out of North Carolina. They dropped the next chapter in their discography, Southern Hostility, in April 2024. Music Video – Opp Stoppers – https://youtu.be/DUl3DPXdCBY

Also on Friday are Vancouver, BC’s Opal in Sky, twin brothers Tyson and Dylon Opalinsky. They share a deep passion for music and its limitless possibilities. Their music reflects their shared values and beliefs. They believe that music has the power to heal, uplift, and bring people together. They are committed to creating meaningful and enjoyable music, and their unique sound is a fusion of different styles and influences. They released their debut album, “Dream Shift,” in July 2024. Music Video – Those Who Wait – https://youtu.be/w6KmSMB2zGs

With a lineup featuring over 40 bands from across Canada, the USA, and Mexico, traveling the furthest from Europe is Vienna, Austria’s Hog Meets Frog, a band fans don’t want to miss. The trio is renowned for their eccentricity and boundary-pushing music that blends prog, funk, and metal. The Urbanizer (You Know Where the Flowers Have Gone) (feat. Marco Minnemann) – https://youtu.be/2PBE6BjOGuc

Other highlights for this year’s open-air are Toronto’s Beguiler, champions of last year’s 2024 Wacken Metal Battle Canada; the slamming deathcore of Arizona’s Gore Pig; Mexico’s Spit On Your Grave, showcasing their powerful, deep growls, blast beats, slam riffs, and heavy breakdowns, all infused with a melodic touch; and Vancouver’s Thirteen Goats, with their signature blend of infernal riffs, huge hooks, and uniquely theatrical songwriting.

Weekend Passes (Aug 1- 3) are available at https://loudashell.ca/shop/

What the press is saying:

“Located an hour and a half east of Calgary is the town of Drumheller, Alberta. With a population in the neighborhood of 8000 and existing smack dab in the middle of Canada’s desert and dinosaur country, it’s not a place one would immediately associate with any sort of metal scene, let alone a big-ass outdoor metal fest. But that’s where you’d be wrong. Going into its 11th year, the Loud as Hell Festival is set to roll on August 4-6th with the likes of Narcotic Wasteland, Jungle Rot and Incite headlining three days of metallic fun featuring 40 or so bands, including The Convalescence, Gorgatron, Necronomicon, Untimely Demise, Eyes of Perdition and more.” – Decibel Magazine

“Western Canada’s loudest heavy metal festival brings fans to town more known for dinos than drum solos.” – CBC Calgary

“What’s more metal than the badlands? Drumheller, AB, is known for being the dinosaur capital of the world — but it’s also the home of the Loud as Hell festival, an event celebrating none other than the loudest music known to man (and, by proxy, prehistoric reptile).” – Exclaim!

“Loud as Hell – one of Canada’s top underground metal festivals – was a metal family reunion. If you walked around the grounds, where tents covered the landscape like flowers, you would experience concert goers laughing, hugging and just enjoying the moment. The music played non-stop and the people were some of the best you’ll meet. What else do you need? If you’re a metalhead fan, mark it down for next year because this is a concert you don’t want to miss.” – Blackfalds Life

“Headbanger alert: Loud As Hell festival to ramp up the volume” – Calgary Herald

“Nevermind the bug spray and sun tan lotion, as August approaches Drumheller residents should stock up on earplugs.” – Calgary Herald

“Loud As Hell returns to the southern Alberta city for its seventh year and as its name implies, will rock the city to its core.” – Calgary Herald

“Loud as Hell has celebrated eight years in the Badlands to date, with acts from all over the world-shattering the peace and quiet of the hills in a camping and music extravaganza.” – Hanna Herald

“Drumheller with its dinosaur bones is the site of the annual Loud as Hell heavy metal festival Friday through Sunday. Dozens of the heaviest bands known to Man will be taking the stage, many of them Canadian” – Gig City

Following the success of their 2024 live appearances, Advent Horizon has returned to the studio, and is currently recording their 4th full-length studio album, which features a side-long 20-minute epic track, and 5 other heavy-hitting progressive rock/metal songs.

0 ATRIA Unleashes New Music Video “Ground Zero” Ahead Of Show Dates With Kataklysm, and more!

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – October 16, 2023

ATRIA Unleashes New Music Video “Ground Zero” Ahead Of Show Dates With Kataklysm, and more!

Photo Credit – Lisa Thompson – Dark Moon Productions

With a fresh lineup and a new musical direction, London, ON’s ATRIA have been baring their knuckles and punching down the concrete walls in all directions by touring all across Ontario this past summer and they have no plans on stopping with their latest announcement of shows this coming October and November, which includes opening support for death metal titans Katakysm in Kingston, ON alongside Sovereign Council and Pound of Flesh.

Show Dates:
Oct 27 – Owen Sound, ON – The Harb
Oct 28 – Guelph, ON – Red Payaya – Kronik Halloween Bash w/ We Are Human, LoversTeeth
Nov 9 – Kingston, ON – The Broom Factory w/ Kataklysm, Sovereign Council, Pound of Flesh

To get fans pumped for their upcoming show dates and for those who have yet to check out their latest EP “Ground Zero” released this past August, ATRIA is sharing their new music video for the title track, which is about the moment that you first pray to God and realize that there will never be an answer.

Vocalist Tom Emmans explains the track and video further:

“The video was filmed at a place called Light is Art by Joe Lyko from Dark Moon Productions. The song is about the first time you pray and realize that no one is going to answer. Joe captured how terrifying that can be with the lighting by playing off of our image, specifically the contacts. We tried to capture the fear of losing God. We tried to make the scariest video that anyone will see this year.”

Watch the video via its premiere on the Spaceuntravel YouTube channel at – https://youtu.be/heQXWicH2-g

Atria’s new EP “Ground Zero” gets very personal to exorcise the darkness of the mind, the frustrations of life, and battling your inner demons. Led lyrically by vocalist Tom Emmans, the EP is his personal outlet to express his observations of the world. He explains further:

“I find myself in a world that I barely believe in, I try to be hopeful when I can but at the end of the day, we’re all just a little broken. I am expressing the broken side so I can be healthy when I walk off stage. It’s therapeutic and cathartic, but it’s really hard. It comes from a real place and it’s not always fun. Musically, for this record, it’s definitely gotten more aggressive, we always wanted to blend a lot of melodies and an anthemic chorus’ with brutality. I feel like the fans will agree that on this new one, we’ve gotten much better at doing that.”

Teaming up once again with producer Jon Howard (Threat Signal), and a new lineup that features Jerad Sterling (Tortured Saint) on drums, Brody King on lead guitar, and bassist Jake Fortney to join founding members vocalist Tom Emmans (Odium, Deathpoint, Choices, Scaithe) and guitarist Tim Ross, “Ground Zero” is an anthemic five track jolt of crushing infectious metalcore.

From its award-winning single “Antiheroes” (“Best Metal”- 2023 Forest City London, ON Music Awards) that captivates with its riffs and simply impossible-to-forget chorus, it sinks in and does not let go as you flow from each track to the next and let the music guide to the messages the band is expressing. “Antiheroes” is about losing faith in government and media, “Dysmorphia” is about body dysmorphia and the way the media will sell you a dream that will never come true, to “Just a Number”, a song about knowing how hard you work every day and feeling you’re nothing more than a cog in a machine and it’s all pointless, to EP closer “The Brightest Lights’, a lullaby to an unborn dead child.

Recommended for fans of Avatar, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Soilwork, and Killswitch Engage, ATRIA‘s second EP “Ground Zero” was released on August 18, 2023 and is available on https://atriaofficial.bandcamp.com and Spotify.

Forest City London, ON Music Awards – Best Metal Band – 2023

“I absolutely loved Atria’s last EP, ‘A New World Order’, so I was more than pleased to be able to sample another installment from them, and that pleasure turned to excitement once I started to listen to the music on show. ‘Ground Zero’ is a much heavier beast than its predecessor, but the band has still managed to make their brutal sound contemporary and melodic which is the main reason I like them so much – even when they’re flat out and bludgeoning your senses, they still make time for some moments which are seriously catchy such as on ‘AnitHeroes’ and ‘Just A Number’… I must give an extra shout out to vocalist Tom Emmans who has seriously delivered on ‘GroundZero’, enhancing their reputation even more – the last song on the EP, ‘Bright Lights’, just says everything about how good he really is. Another great record from a cool set of Canadians. 9/10” – Powerplay Magazine (Ground Zero 2023)

“Metal powerhouse Atria are back with their compelling EP, Ground Zero. With a fresh lineup and a bold new direction, the band dives deep into personal struggles and battles against inner demons… Teamed up with producer Jon Howard (Threat Signal) and a revamped lineup, Ground Zero is promised to be a five-track burst of infectious metalcore. For fans of Avatar, Slipknot, and Killswitch Engage, Atria’s new EP is for you.” – Metal Insider (Ground Zero 2023)

“Four of them are mind blowing and aggressive, coming along incredibly groovy yet pushing with often djent-driven rhythm patterns. While the riffs are dark and mighty, the lead guitar adds brighter, melodic parts. Tom’s growls are brutal, expressing the frustration in life and the anger towards the world we live in, but he also manages to switch effortlessly into clean singing during the often catchy choruses. Besides those prominent elements, there’s a lot happening in the background that gives their music an anthemic sound, brought to bear by the well-balanced mixing.” – The Prog Space (Ground Zero 2023)

“Ground Zero contains a lot of pent up rage, sadness, and other negative emotions which is clearly aimed at the writer(s). But it also projects the same types of rage and emotions towards the world we reside in, in 2022/23. Coming from a place that seems to be a bit more deep down and to the core than the groups last venture, it’s never going to be all laughs and good times. That is on full display for listeners to take in. Honest, real, and relatable content are the words we’d use to describe this EP at the very the least… Atria have managed to borrow all the good bits from the best parts of metal and worked them in their favor plus more. Canada is unrelenting right now in the metal music community which means you almost need to stand out. Atria don’t seem to be worried and are only proving that with Ground Zero.” – Noizze UK (Ground Zero 2023)

“The production is perfect, the musicianship is on point, the songs don’t outstay their welcome, and while it’s familiar, it also feels fresh and current. I’m not sure if I’ll get to review 10 releases this year, but if I do, this is going to be right up there in my top 10. Well done gents. You’ve pretty much floored me, but in the best way possible. ” – Ever-Metal (Ground Zero 2023)

“ATRIA have drawn references to the likes of SLIPKNOT, MUDVAYNE and KILLSWITCH ENGAGE with their sound and certainly across Ground Zero there were moments we could only concur yet the outstanding EP has an individuality and singular character which is unmissable, a uniqueness we cannot wait to see further blossom within the band and their already keenly anticipated future offerings.” – The RingMaster Review (Ground Zero 2023)

“Closing with “The Brightest Lights” they change pace and mood in a wonderful way, as it’s performed only with keys and clean vocals, and shows a different emotional side of their versatile work. Clearly a band to keep an eye (and ear) on!” – Mostly-Metal (Ground Zero 2023)

NARCOTIC WASTELAND Unveils New Single “Sex Lies & DNA” – A Dark Exploration of True Crime

+ Loud As Hell Festival w/ Jungle Rot, Incite, Necronomicon, The Convalescence

Renowned metal band Narcotic Wasteland, led by the talented Dallas Toler-Wade, is set to unleash their latest musical offering, a gripping single entitled “Sex Lies & DNA”. The track showcases the band’s signature intense sound, with haunting lyrics that delve into the intriguing world of true crime. Set for release on Friday, July 28, 2023, the song is expected to captivate audiences with its thought-provoking themes and powerful instrumentation.

With Dallas Toler-Wade on guitar and vocals, Brett Lee on lead guitar, Erik Schultek on drums, Kenji Tsunami on bass, and Joseph Howard and special guest Andrea_N_Black on vocals, “Sex Lies & DNA” features an impressive lineup of talented musicians whose synergy produces an electrifying sonic experience.

The single’s production was meticulously handled by Erik Schultek and Dallas Toler-Wade themselves at Level 3 Studios, resulting in a top-tier musical composition that expertly captures the essence of the band’s unique style. In a statement about the song, Dallas Toler-Wade shared his inspiration, stating:

“This song lyrically shows my ever-growing fascination with true crime. As I was working on this song, I asked myself a question. I asked myself what’s worse? A serial killer that has to ritual kill for power and control over the victim, or the husband or wife that kills their partner for a life insurance payout? It’s all equally bad, of course. The difference for me is I am fascinated with serial killers, but these other petty selfish murders like for money disgust me. While there are different reasons people kill, it all seems to stem from being a sociopath. The level of detachment and selfishness is astounding. And many of these murders, whether it be from a serial killer or more on the domestic side of things, drugs, and alcohol often play a role. Musically, “Sex Lies & DNA” showcases the band’s signature frantic tri-tonal riffing combined with an old-school speed metal/punk vibe, particularly evident in the powerful chorus chant.”

Dallas Toler-Wade’s songwriting prowess is evident as the track presents a challenging yet enthralling vocal and instrumental arrangement, featuring an exceptional guitar solo contributed by Brett Lee, followed by an impressive solo by Toler-Wade himself. The dedication to perfection even extends to the chorus, with multiple tracks recorded for the chant, including a contribution from their booking agent Andrea_N_Black.

To celebrate the release of “Sex Lies & DNA”, Narcotic Wasteland is embarking on a thrilling tour, treating fans across North America to their electrifying live performances. The tour will feature special guests Gorgatron and Tegmentum, promising a night of pure metal mayhem and unadulterated energy. Catch Narcotic Wasteland on the following tour dates listed below.
