Calgary’s Lost In Static has been pushing forward to make a name for themselves on their local scene and beyond while they sit tight and wait for live concerts to resurrect during these COVID days. Having already unleashed two singles “Feel Alive” and their tribute to their lost friend “Jordan”. Today, the band is unveiling their next song “Train Wreck”, that will be showcased along with previously released singles on the metalcore quartet’s debut album, which is planned for release later this year.

The band adds about sharing their next track:

“Our song ‘Train Wreck’ is our third and last single to come out before our album drops. This song is about confronting the issue of people exploding while suffering from mental illness and using it as a shield from the consequences.”

Watch and listen to the lyric video via its premiere on GhostCultMag HERE.

Comprised of seasoned musicians Lance MacBain, Noureen Amin, Jared Boyd, Tyler Johansen the metal band has just started their musical journey fusing the djent elements of progressive metal with metalcore.

The group works together to create music that is both aggressive and fun, with MacBain generally writing the music and MacBain, Johansen, and Boyd collectively writing the lyrics. Relating to their band name, the messages they send through their lyrics convey relation to the feeling of getting lost in the “static” of the world, and all the events that take place; an almost overwhelming feeling of white noise.

With an emphasis on producing a tight live show full of headbanging, energy, and moshing when concerts return after the COVID pandemic, Lost In Static will hitting the ground running and eager to tour.

Lost in Static is recommended for fans of After the Burial, Veil of Maya, and Born of Osiris.

This single is going to be on Lost In Static’s debut self-titled album released later this year. The heartfelt and personal song has special meaning to the band, which they explain in their own words:

“Our new single “Jordan” is our second track to be released from our upcoming debut record. ‘Jordan’ was a childhood friend who unfortunately lost his life from drinking and driving. Calgary’s LOST IN STATIC are a new band to the Canadian metal scene in the vein of groups like Volumes, After the Burial, Veil of Maya, and Born of Osiris, and like fellow artists, are pushing their way up the ladder to be noticed by fans of the genre. This past October, they released the debut single ‘Feel Alive’, a track that features heavy, fun, and awe-inspiring djent rhythms. Taking no pause to make more noise and stir up mosh pits once again, LOST IN STATIC are ready to warm the hearts of fans this coming holiday season with their metal rendition of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”.

Guitarist Lance MacBain explains:

“I love Christmas and I love Christmas music. Ever since August Burns Red started putting out Christmas music I have been wanting to make some in my own way.  So with the band starting to take off this year, it was time to finally write one. “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” was picked because it’s one of the best known Christmas songs and I had lots of ideas for it, so that’s what we went with! We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do!”

Riveting and aggressive, listen to LOST IN STATIC‘s holiday cover via TheCirclePit‘s YouTube HERE.

And if ya like to hear (maybe cringe), the original Mariah Carey pop version here.

Toronto’s VODNIK have posted a new behind the scenes trailer for the debut music video “Our Dread, Our Joy” unleashed last month. Shot by Trenches Media Inc., the video captures the band’s approach of blending heavier and lighter styles of metal, which range from technical riffs, to spooky mellow passages, to hardcore breakdowns for an overall well balanced sound between progressive grooves and dark atmospheres that is bizarre and ominous yet catchy and memorable.

Drummer Vince Anastasi comments:

“The making of Our Dread, Our Joy was quite the experience. The location of the video was shot at the Ruins of St. Raphael in Cornwall, Ontario. It is a remarkable place unlike anywhere else in Ontario. The band knew it was important that we hire the right film crew who could capture the ruins in all its glory and give life to our vision for the video and band. After shopping around for a crew, we decided that The Trenches Media would be suitable for the job. Together with The Trenches Media and the location, the band was confident that we could create a quality product that was both professional and aesthetic.”

About:

Drawing their name and lyrical themes from the mythological Czech creature, guitarist Jeremy Jackson explains:

“In Czech, Vodnik roughly translates to ‘of water’. I adopted the name for us because it is a widely celebrated mythological creature from my Czech heritage. Vodnik is gruesome, perfect for metal and what we want to do with it.”

Vocalist Reinier Vandenbosch adds:

“Lakes and rivers are its territory where it awaits to trap the souls of drowning victims. He is similar to the boogieman of the English-speaking world that also scares children. I try to write the lyrics largely from the perspective of the Vodnik creature.”

Along with embracing themes centered around the creature, VODNIK is also inspired by science fiction and horror, social and political commentary, dark philosophical ideas, and other mythological stories. Citing a wide variety of musical influences, VODNIK is a legit, no nonsense, monstrous groove metal four-piece that brings a ferocious energy to the stage.

About:

Edmonton’s own Protosequence offer a rush of groovy guitar parts met with story-filled lyrics and serene, landscape-sized instrumentals that roll like hills into a valley.

Protosequence is a reference to the original genome where all life began — much like the band, which existed in principle before they even had a presence. Each of the members were lying in wait to be activated and become the strain that is now Protosequence. Kyle Hunter (guitar) was constantly crafting near-complete songs that were ready to be realized. It did not take long for Kyle and Logan Vars (drums) to finally meet. It seemed as though there were two projects destined to combine into a singular effort to form the final line-up for the band: Logan (drums), Kyle (guitar), Parker (guitar), Joseph McKee (vocals), and Ryan Schaffler (ex-bassist) who is now replaced by Jacob Teeple. Members have a long history in the Edmonton music scene, playing in bands like Anubian and In The Midst Of A Murder since the early 2000s.

The band draws influence from acts like All Shall Perish, August Burns Red, and The Black Dahlia Murder. With a foothold on their influences, they root their music in technicality while layering emotional, yet gruff vocals weaved into every track. The band transitions seamlessly through djent riffs, grinding drums, and groove elements, making their sound versatile and ever-changing. Each live performance is crafted like an album played from front to back, with each song bearing a story and painting the room like a canvas — leaving the colours and experiences on each audience member.

The band will be releasing their new EP “Biophagous” on August 18th, 2017 to follow their 2016 debut EP “Schizophrene”.

– 30 –

“Edmonton’s Protosequence perform an agile balancing act on the new song “Shepherd” we’re bringing you from their forthcoming EP, Biophagus, a high-wire performance that deftly straddles a stylistic divide without ever losing their path forward.” No Clean Singing

“In the vein of bands like All Shall Perish & Born of Osiris, Protosequence kick proceedings off with the furiously tech riffing of Parasitic, a wild & untamed slab of death metal. That is until a surprising tempo change that brings in some keyboards & more classic metal sounding guitar solo. It’s a damn strong start, one that leaves you wondering just what more Biophagous has to offer.” – Games, Braaaiiins And A Headbanging Life

“Protosequence is an act of quality over quantity.  I get seriously lost in their music, be it through a spine-damaging headbanging session (“DFL”) or stretch of melodic introspection (“Shepherd”).  Biophagous offers up another nice showcase of the band’s skill across a variety of substyles and paces.” – Metal Trenches

“Protosequence takes the insane melodic riffage of metalcore bands like August Burns Red or Novelists, and mixes them with tech death elements of bands like The Black Dahlia Murder which makes for what I think could be a band that has the potential to break through and make it huge…Biophagus is of another caliber, every aspect of it is flawless, and will not only be in my playlist but should be in everyone else’s as well. Whatever you do, do not sleep on this band. Make sure you pick up Biophagus when it releases August 18th! ” – Blood Rock Media

“Incorporating elements from deathcore, technical death metal, and, yes, even djent, Protosequence manages to maintain the listener’s interest while developing an identity that is not only unique to Canada, but to the world. ” – It Djents

“Traversing between djent and technical progressive metal” – Somberlane

Teaming up with Sick Drummer Magazine, PROTOSEQUENCE‘s drummer Logan Vars is showcasing his pounding force and technicality with a new playthrough for the band’s track “Shepherd”.

Vars comments:

“Shepherd is the most melodic and “pretty” song off our latest EP “Biophagous”. It’s also the most groove oriented. Starting out mellow, and coming to a climax near the end; I absolutely love playing this song. Probably the easiest Protosequence song as far as drums go. I use this as a warm up to get me started. It’s a nice low stress, high energy song to play along to. Once again, I’d like to thank Nick and Andrew from Nick Laird Videography, and Echo Tree Audio, respectively, for all their hard work on the video. I also want to thank my band mates Joe, Parker, Kyle, and Jacob for being such handsome gentlemen, Cara for being so amazing, and Sick Drummer for premiering this video.  This video is filmed in one take (2 cameras on tripods, and one handheld) with no sample replacing and no editing. Thanks for the support, go tell your dog that you love him/her. “

About:

The band will be releasing their new EP “Biophagous” on August 18th, 2017 to follow their 2016 debut EP “Schizophrene”.

“Traversing between djent and technical progressive metal” – Somberlane

“This EP is bursting with technical hooks and ripping solos that take more than a few cues from the technical death metal camp.  In fact, if we consider a spectrum between these genres, I would say that Schizophrene falls closer to groups like The Zenith Passage than Whitechapel.  Also, mad props for the seemless shifts between melodic and harsh riffs while maintaining aggression in the vocals.” – Metal Trenches (EP Review Schizophrene)

“Musically speaking, they share as much in common with Periphery as they do with Lost Soul. While there will be some who are turned off by the noise gates and the disparity of the chunky lows and the sharp highs, I think it’s one of the band’s biggest strengths. It represents the merging of two very technical subgenres and presents each of them in the context of the other. It’s kind of a hard thing to explain without listening; check out “Guardian” and follow it up with “Darkness Weeps” for the best illustration of this dichotomy.” – Toilet ov Hell (EP Review Schizophrene)
