Calgary’s YYC Music Awards 2018 Submissions Now Open!

     Recognizing the talent and achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC MUSIC AWARDS shines the spotlight on artists from one of Canada’s most vibrant and eclectic scenes. Hosting their 3rd annual gala this coming Fall 2018 on September 23rd at The Palace Theatre (219 8 Ave SW), the YYCMA‘s have open submissions to Calgary’s homegrown talent beginning March 1st and ending on May 31st.


This year’s 2018 awards will honour members of the Calgary music community in 19 categories (listed below).

Please note submission requirements:
Recording Submission:
The album or single must have been commercially released between March 1st, 2017 and February 28th, 2018 to be eligible. This time frame will be strictly enforced, and the YYCMA will not accept submissions for materials released outside this time frame. Singles may not be part of a collection previously nominated.

Who can apply?
Artists from the Calgary area, including Airdrie, Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, Strathmore and areas up to a maximum 125 km radius of the City of Calgary.

Deadline:
To be considered for a 2018 YYC Music Award, submissions must be received by midnight Mountain Time on May 31, 2018. No extensions will be granted.

     Recognizing the talent and achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC MUSIC AWARDS shines the spotlight on Canada’s fourth largest city, and its eclectic music scene that calls it home. This past Sunday, September 24th, the YYCMA‘s held their 2nd annual gala at The Palace Theatre to honour artists in 19 categories along with performances from nominees Britt Walchuk (nominated for Blues Recording of the Year), Poke The Bear (nominated for Zackariah and the Prophets Memorial Award), Citysleep (nominated for DJ/Electronic Recording of the Year, Winner of Group of the Year), Amy Hef (nominated for Alternative Recording of the Year, Winner of Female Artist of the Year) and Locomotive Ghost (nominated for Group of the Year, Pop Recording of the Year, Roots/Folk Recording of the Year, Single of the Year). The highlight of the night was multiple award wins by JJ Shiplett taking home four trophies for Country Recording of The Year, Male Artist of The Year, Roots/Folk Recording of The Year and Single of The Year along with King Dylan winning two awards for Music Video of The Year and Pop Recording of The Year plus The Static Shift also taking home two awards for Rock Recording of The Year and the Zackariah And The Prophets Memorial Award presented by The Prophets of Music.

     Recognizing the talent and achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC MUSIC AWARDS shines the spotlight on Canada’s fourth largest city, and the vibrant music scene that calls its home.
Honouring artists in 20 categories, which include two new categories this year – Classical Recording of the Year and Industry Person of the Year (full list below), the 2017 YYC MUSIC AWARDS will be taking submissions until May 31st for the 2nd annual gala being held on September 24th at The Palace Theatre.

Before submitting to YYC Music Awards please read the following in full:

Eligibility Requirements:

The eligibility period for the 2017 YYC Music Awards is between March 1, 2016 and February 28, 2017. This time frame will be strictly enforced, and we will not accept submissions for materials recorded outside this time frame.

“Release date” for YYCMA purposes is defined as the date of first shipment to retail, radio or posted online release date. Proof of online transaction or shipment may be requested. This applies to all submissions whether single, album or video!

People’s Choice category and Zackariah and the Prophets categories are excluded from this requirement.

Artists from the Calgary area, including Airdrie, Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, Strathmore and areas up to a maximum 125 km radius of the City of Calgary.

Submissions Deadline:

To be considered for a 2017 YYC Music Award, submissions must be received by midnight on May 31, 2017. No extensions will be granted.

Submission Fee:

Please note, there will be a $5.00 per category submission fee this year. You will be taken to a payment page when you hit submit at the end of the form.

Zackariah and the Prophets Memorial Award Submission

Before submitting to YYC Music Awards please read the following in full:

This award is not about the most polished band or most professional yet, they may not even have more than a couple of demo’s posted so far but it’s about the band that is taking all those baby steps and embody possibility and promise, taking into account the criteria outlined below:

Progression: progression of skills, musicality, and presence in local scene.

Musicality: blend on instruments, interesting musical concepts, overall song layout and structure.

Originality: a unified and distinct sound, compositional arrangement, unique and interesting.

Direction: sense of unified sound and layout displayed in EP or sound samples. Cohesive throughout.

Social media presence: easily found online content. Information regarding releases, shows, general band/artist info. Open to artist with 2 or less independent releases.

Artists are required to submit an essay of 500 words or less, outlining why they think they should be considered for the Zackariah and the Prophets Memorial Award, based on the above criteria. This can include but is not exclusive to highlighting steps you are taking to build your band and brand, accomplishments you have achieved and where you are at in your career. Just tell us who you are and what you are about.

     Recognizing the achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC Music Awards is proud to announce their inaugural year in supporting and celebrating the wide range of musical talent based in the city. Honouring artists in 19 categories (listed below), the YYC Music Awards has extended their submission deadline to May 15th for this year’s first annual gala being held on September 25th at a venue later to be announced. Nominees and tickets for the event will be announced on July 31st.
The YYC Music Awards are founded by music industry veterans Darren Gilbert (producer, Off The T-Can Studio), Shannon Ambrose (The Portal Magazine), Larry Mayell (artist manager) & Leanne Harrison (SIN Agency) to celebrate the artists that embrace Calgary at home, entertaining and supporting its arts and culture.
