Riff-tastic Debut LP “Beyond The Sun” Out April 7th

New Video “The High Priest”

From the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains comes Calgary, Alberta’s WOODHAWK. Masters of straight ahead riff-rock wizardry, the power trio released an EP in 2014 and have continued forging ahead. Made of equal parts 1970’s Birmingham and a myriad of 21st century heavy who’s who, WOODHAWK are purveyors of riff-centric rock and roll. Capable and original, the band is able to craft anthemic fist-pumping songs while forgoing tired stoner rock clichés. With time travel tested themes of science fiction, swords and sorcery, the band’s lyrics are born from snowy winters, hot practice spaces and pages of dog-eared paperbacks. While the musicianship reinforces recollections of Black Sabbath, modern influences that have helped you smash air drums or highway speed limits are undeniably present.

Set to unleash their debut full-length ‘Beyond The Sun’ produced by the band with Jesse Gander (Bison, Japandroids) on April 7th, WOODHAWK has teamed up with TheSludgelord for the full stream premiere at the following link: http://thesludgelord.blogspot.ca/2017/04/album-premiere-calgary-albertas.html

“Beyond the Sun is incredibly infectious and memorable and right from the get go, you know that you are in for a ride. Even if for whatever reason you are in a bad mood, this record will straighten that out in a hurry as it has you nodding your head and belting the lyrics out with the vocalist in no time….a release that is easy to listen to and get into but isn’t easy to put down by any means. Once you begin listening you have a hard time tearing yourself away from your speakers.” – Cadaver Garden

“Woodhawk have a new album – Beyond The Sun – and it’s one that ticks all right boxes if you’re a serious fan of Stoner Rock. Taking influence from bands such as Kyuss, The Sword and Truckfighters. Woodhawk offer a refreshing style of Psych Stoner Metal with moments of Fuzz and Desert Rock that add extra grit to their music.” – Outlaws of The Sun

“The whole album put me in a good mood. Although I am a fan of a more distorted and fuzz-y sounding stoner rock, this was a great cleaned up take…The killer trio band have really created their own rules. One of which is trying to throw out stoner rock stereotypes. And it’s working brilliantly for them. Beyond the Sun is exactly what one would expect from Woodhawk. Riffs and riffs and riffs and high energy drums and more riffs…Moral of the story: this is the perfect CD to pop on when you feel like dancing in your underwear while cleaning your room. I would recommend “Beyond the Sun” to anyone who would like a less distorted version of Red Fang. Which is definitely a compliment, for the record.” – Bangs!

“As I was walking into the venue, I began hurrying up the stairs as their sound captured my attention right away and was quickly swept up into their thick pulse thumping guitars and huge powerhouse drum sound.” – Vancity Buzz
“Calgarian riff-riders Woodhawk kicked off the proceedings, hitting all the gritty notes with their raucous roadhouse metal. Propane and Jack flowed freely as the golden western trio woke all them witches with their thematic rock fury.” – Beatroute Magazine

Vocalist / guitarist Turner Midzain comments on the track:

“‘Quest for Clarity’ was one of the last songs we wrote for the record. It’s about taking a step back and really looking around at what’s going on. Sometimes you need to step back in order to move forward. We felt this song really tied the two sides of the album together. It’s a bit of a different side of us with more harmonies and contrast than some of our previous straight-ahead riffers.”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – March 28, 2017

For Fans of Black Sabbath, The Sword, Clutch, Truckfighters, Priestess, Mastodon, Red Fang, Thin Lizzy

WOODHAWK Announce “Vagabonds of The Western Gig Tour” (BC/AB/SK/MB) And Riff-tastic Debut LP “Beyond The Sun” Out April 7th

New Video “The High Priest”

Slathered in rock and roll riffs and dealing with a case of wanderlust, Calgary’s rock revival heroes WOODHAWK set out to unleash their debut full-length ‘Beyond The Sun’ paired with dates across Western Canada. The riff wizards just released a video for their single ‘The High Priest’, which showcases their lyricism and fanaticism for musical perfection. Lyrically the song questions individual power and how people can either use it for good or evil.

Watch ‘The High Priest’ at

Their album ‘Beyond The Sun’ is produced by the band with Jesse Gander (Bison, Japandroids) and is slated for release April 7, 2017. Pre-order of Vinyl, CD or Digital with an instant download of the first single ‘The High Priest’ available via their bandcamp at https://woodhawk.bandcamp.com.

“This album has been years in the making and really shows the evolution of the band. We focused hard on not just making good riffs, but good songs. Doing this album, and with Jesse Gander,  no less, was a bucket list goal for us. So to be in Vancouver and recording with someone who we truly admire, was something that we feel is reflected in the album.” says vocalist / guitarist.

After opening for Truckfighters, Yawning Man and We Hunt Buffalo in Calgary, WOODHAWK will be hitting the road for tour of Western Canada to quell their hunger for playing shows.

#12 on National Loud Top 20 for 2017- Canadian College Radio Charts (Earshot)

The best Canadian metal of 2017: Top 15, according to Hellbound.ca – #13 – Woodhawk

“Calgarian riff-riders Woodhawk kicked off the proceedings, hitting all the gritty notes with their raucous roadhouse metal. Propane and Jack flowed freely as the golden western trio woke all them witches with their thematic rock fury.” – Beatroute (AB)

““Beyond The Sun, is overflowing with everything one could want from a great stoner rock record, thick, rumbling bass tones, sizzling guitar fuzz and infectious, mid tempo riffage, making this the kind of album that is very hard to stop listening to” – The Sludgelord

“Impressing is what this album is all about, from the off-the-hook heavy jam of ‘Living In The Sand‘ to the heady blues-ish traits of ‘Magnetic North‘. Everything is tight knit and super relaxed as the rollercoaster ride of ever-alternating tempos on the organ-laden ‘Lawless‘ and the apparent ode to Star Wars, ‘A New Hope‘, revel in their incredibleness. For me personally, my favorite here is the album-closing ‘Chrononaut‘ and its preceding introductory instrumental opener, ‘Foresee The Future‘. This is what the modern era of serious stoner rock sounds like, my friends.” – Taste Nation

“Take Red Fang, The Sword and Witchcraft, strip them of nearly all distortion and add a canny knack for catchy as fuck riffs, with a psychedelic edge, and you arrive at the dusty doorstep of Calgarian stoner rockers Woodhawk!” – Worship Metal

“this is a pretty damn good effort for an independent debut, dude!” – Hellbound

“The title track really sums up Woodhawk’s strengths. It comes across as a synthesis of Mastodon (circa Crack The Skye) and Kyuss circa their spacey, proggy Welcome To Sky Valley. I just love this track; everything is just right, a really catchy song with a very modern mid-section.” – Hellbound

“These guys are cosmically phenomenal!” – Wayout Radio

“As self released debut albums go, you can’t really top this, I cannot think of anything close to as good, I struggle to think of many debut albums in the past decade even with a budget of a label behind them sounded as good a sound as Woodhawk. If you are a fan of bands like Priestess, Red Fang, Truck fighters and so on, then these guys genuinely are a must for you to check out.” – Ramzine

“If you love that 70’s feel with a tinge of modern stoner rock meets Sabbath inspired riffs then Woodhawk‘s “Beyond The Sun” will be just your thing.” – The Rock Pit

“Woodhawk play a lovely brand of stoner rock & for 39 minutes bare their souls for all to see. Beyond the Sun is a fantastic record filled with moody riffs, hazy beats & vocals that are lethargic in style but excite in equal measure.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“An intelligent, vibrating and interesting album” – Merchants of Air

“With slamming, groovy riffs, the band’s first full length record brings you back to the early 70s rock n roll sound with several different lyrical themes to keep it interesting… a killer 9-track debut record not to be forgotten soon by fans of stoner rock.” – Metal Nexus

“This album comes out swinging right from the get-go, and swing for the fences from track to track. WOODHAWK are purveyors of riff-centric rock and roll and you get it from front to back, the band is able to craft anthemic fist-pumping songs while forgoing tired stoner rock clichés.” – Ignite Music Mag

“The nine tracks that make up the fantastic trip of “Beyond the Sun” has its own delicious flavor wrapped in a sexy costume of desert/stoner rock, and once the riffs sink their hooks into you there’s no going back. To call this album captivating would only be the very beginning of how much Woodhawk grabs a hold of the human psyche with this music. It’s all top tier, high-quality stoner rock the likes of which we don’t see often, and it’s not hard to see why “Beyond the Sun” seems to enrapture all who behold its tunes.” – Head-Banger Reviews

“Beyond The Sun is an album that contains equal parts proto metal, stoner rock and alt rock to an impressive effect, at it’s core this album is something of a throwback, although it’s one that has embraced contemporary influences that stop it from being a complete anachronism. Beyond The Sun is an album that will appeal to fans of stoner rock from across the decades, from the distant influences of seventies bands that pioneered the bass driven grooves of the genre, through to the more recent pioneers of intoxication such as Kyuss.” – The Punk Site

“9 pure rock tracks that will blow your ears.” – Zone Nights

““Magnetic North” starts out more rock-folk but before long Woodhawk’s heaviosity kicks in in all its stoner metal glory.” – Ride The Tempo

“Straight forward fuzzed up stoner rock with a Sabbath riff coursing through every song. Welcome to Woodhawk, a power trio from the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. Beyond The Sun is a stomper of an album” – Musipedia of Metal

“As I was walking into the venue, I began hurrying up the stairs as their sound captured my attention right away and was quickly swept up into their thick pulse thumping guitars and huge powerhouse drum sound.” – Vancity Buzz
