0 All About The Rock – Van Halst – World of Make Believe

Opening track ‘The End’ erupts like a volcano from the speakers & immediately sets your ears on fire. An amazing double kick groove laden drum with detuned guitar & bass riffs just before Kamis vocal cuts like an acetylene torch.

The album’s title track is surprisingly punk rock for a goth band, but it is executed so well. The droning guitars, chanting group vocals and straight to the chest drumming build an interesting and somehow danceable tune, made considerably stronger by the lead vocalist’s very obvious abilities with the microphone.

Edmonton, AB’s VAN HALST is a fierce, empowering force of hard rock fused with metal.  A project, which began as a solo artist for whom the band is named after — Kami Van Halst, has since become a full group producing socially conscious, lyrical tracks that focus on disenfranchised and marginalized populations. The band’s influences stay true to goth rock with Kami Van Halst demonstrating an agile vocal delivery in combination with pummeling growls. Lyrically, the band draws from black metal due to its focus on people suffering from isolation and rising to overcome the preconceptions of a judgmental society. In This Moment’s industrial fusion remains a primary influence for Van Halst, employing a sampler, synthesizer, and distorted vocals.

Kami Van Halst dominates as the vocalist performing both growls and soaring vocals (Surviving Suzanne), Scott Greene (Derina Harvey Band/Dirty Pool) and Strathon J. Bajowsky (Havok Way) craft the guitar work while Brendan McMillan (bass) (My Darkest Days) and Brett Seaton (drums) (Cultured by Fire) drive the rhythm section of the band. Kami’s range and virtuosic vocal ability always captivates an audience and her attitude on stage truly delivers the meaning behind the songs. The main writing forces for the band are Kami and Scott working together to give listeners a vivid image of social injustices. The band’s live performance is a theatric experience as the utilize full-costumes, make-up and stage props.

Their debut album ‘World of Make Believe’ is now available as of March 4th and can be picked up on iTunes and Bandcamp plus streaming at the following links below.

Vocalist Kami Van Halst comments about the album:
“We are so excited to be releasing this album. It’s been in the works for years and to finally have it out is an amazing feeling. Thank-you for all the support and we’ll see you on the road!”

This band with Kami van Halst as their lead singer it is so much more than Evanescence is. Their music goes further, has more depth and is more dark than a band like Evanescence. – See more at: http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/en/reviews/view/id/31769#sthash.d0Q0ZhX3.dpuf

Vocalist Kami Van Halst comments about the track:
“World of Make Believe contains ten songs that speak to a variety of social justice issues such as poverty, youth homelessness, religion, domestic violence and feminism. I strongly believe that musicians and other public figures have a responsibility to try and create positive social change through their art and their voice: World of Make Believe is our contribution. We want this album to make people think about systemic issues in a different way and motivate them to create positive change through activism.”

Kami has one of those voices that could stop, or start an avalanche…Van Halst is the champion here. With uncomfortable socially conscious lyrics, sympathetic musical accompaniment, and stellar songwriting, World of Make Believe will turn more than a few heads and breed more than a few goose bumps.

Vocalist Kami Van Halst comments about the track:
“I wrote Questions with my sister Brittney Grabill. This song deals with victim blaming and how the victims of sexual assault are often criticized and blamed for putting themselves in the vulnerable position, which allowed them to be abused or exploited. This is wrong, we should not be blaming or scrutinizing the victims of abuse. We need to remove the stigma and put the blame where it rightly belongs- on the abuser.”

0 Moshville Times – Van Halst – The World of Make Believe

  • February 16, 2016
  • by Asher
  • · Van Halst

From the opening track, it is clear that Kami Van Halst has a belter of a voice. Her vocals are powerful enough to hold their own even when the band is in full metal mode (and the band can go properly full metal) but she can also deliver a ballad with a gentle intensity. And she can scream!
