Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada, melodic death metal band Outlying will release their long-awaited new album “Oblivisci” on November 21st. A visceral and uncompromising work, the record blends aggression, melody, and raw emotion into a cohesive listening experience that fans will find impossible to ignore.

Formed in 2003 by high school friends jamming covers, Outlying has evolved through lineup changes and years of musical exploration into a band committed to creating music that is both powerful and accessible. Frontman Fred Dubeau, the band’s primary songwriter, sought to move beyond “music for musicians” and instead craft songs that resonate viscerally with listeners. The result is a sound described in five words: captivating, dark, aggressive, melodic metal.

The album’s title, “Oblivisci”, Latin for “to forget”, reflects themes of withdrawal, alienation, and the struggle to escape trauma. Across eleven tracks, the band explores grief, loneliness, disenfranchisement, and addiction, culminating in a three-part epic that chronicles frontman Dubeau’s personal battle with alcohol and drug dependency. Now sober, Dubeau channels those experiences into music that is both cathartic and brutally honest.

“It is a great pleasure for us after all this time and a very difficult process to introduce the world to our newest effort, Oblivisci. We are glad to be musicians who are somehow different from most other bands in our environment, and strive to make music that is expressive, dark, heavy, and brings the listener through many different kinds of atmospheres and vibes. We try to avoid trends and gimmicks, and create something that comes from our diverse musical influences, different backgrounds and lives, and many other forms of art such as movies, books, or video games. While staying true to what Outlying always was, we always try to step up our game and improve our sound and musical connection with our audience. Despite being more often than not called a melodic death metal band, the band absorbs influences from thrash, black, prog, and also 70s, 80s, and 90s rock. In a world of thousands of forgettable songs, we hope to find our way into the hearts of many metal enthusiasts locally and around the world,” says the band.

Musically, “Oblivisci” strikes a balance between relentless, heavy riffing and soaring melodic passages, enriched by clean vocal textures and dynamic arrangements. With Outlying, the band steers clear of unnecessary complexity, instead crafting songs that prioritize emotion and impact. While echoes of their influences, At The Gates, Testament, Cradle of Filth, In Flames, and Wintersun, are present, Outlying’s sound stands apart as distinct and refined, heavier yet more melodic than ever before.

The record begins with The Raven Is Gone, a blistering and epic opener that channels the urgency of escaping chaos in search of refuge. Stigma follows, rooted in old‑school melodic death metal, confronting themes of societal judgment and subcultural rejection. The atmosphere turns chilling with Snow, a haunting narrative of abuse elevated by female vocals and an expansive, epic structure. The descent continues in Pitch Black Serum, a dark and unsettling track that delves into defeatism and indulgence in fleeting pleasures. Sentinel then emerges as a poignant power ballad, weaving clean vocals with an aggressive bridge to capture grief and memory. Closing the album, the three‑part suite Dreamless Nights I–III delivers a sweeping chronicle of addiction, false escape, and painful aftermath, culminating in a climactic, melodic finale that leaves a powerful and lasting impression.

The album artwork depicts a post-apocalyptic version of the band’s home city, visually reinforcing the themes of decay, alienation, and survival that permeate the record. It mirrors the music’s balance of heaviness and melody, offering listeners a complete aesthetic experience.

With “Oblivisci,” Outlying has crafted a “no skipped tracks” album; every song matters, every riff and lyric carries weight. The band hopes to continue releasing music consistently, exploring new directions while staying true to their core sound.

Listen to the album in full via its stream premiere on Bravewords HERE.

Available on all digital platforms on November 21st, 2025.

“Outlying pull together ingredients of thrash, melodic death metal, and black metal to create music that’s blood-rushing and muscle-flexing, and the panoply of changing riffs is very damned infectious too.” – No Clean Singing

“In the shadow of Quebec’s steel-forged skies, Outlying emerges once again with The Raven Is Gone — a melodic death metal masterstroke that’s equal parts chaos and catharsis… The Raven Is Gone is not just a song — it’s a statement. A declaration that melodic death metal is alive, vital, and pulsing through Canada’s veins. Outlying have evolved into something rare: a band that remembers what heavy music was meant to do — confront, release, and transcend.” – See Rock Live Magazine

“Melodic death metal band Outlying released their new single Pitch-Black Serum on November 16th. The song’s biting energy and unrelenting fervor hits with an uncommon ferocity while being dynamic…” – Din Intunerec

“Outlying offers a solid Swedish-style melodic death metal sound with their own personal touch.” – MetalUniverse.net

“With a biting energy and a relentless intensity, [Pitch-Black Serum] hits with an uncommon ferocity while keeping a dynamic, melodic and catchy structure.” – MetalUniverse.net

“I had never heard of this band before, so I was all the more amazed by the high level of performance the band had already achieved in 2012 [Scars Of Daylight album]. They are reminiscent of Scandinavian melodic death metal bands of the late 1990s.” – Ammo-underground.at

“The three gentlemen serve us finely spun melodies; the musicians tie everything together into a flowing, detailed unity. A bit of clean vocals are sprinkled in here and there, and so a lot happens in this largely whipping smasher. A few threatening vibes and thrashy, straight-ahead tactics are also effectively employed, as is polyphonic vocals – everything just fits! Raising fists, enjoying details, headbanging – it’s a mystery to me why these all-rounders are still so unknown!” – Ammo-underground.at

Trois-Rivieres’ Melodic Death Metal Force OUTLYING Unleashes “The Raven Is Gone”

New Album “Oblivisci” Out Nov 2025

Canadian melodic death metal band Outlying has unleashed their brand-new single “The Raven Is Gone”, the third preview of their upcoming full-length album “Oblivisci,” set for release on November 21, 2025.

Following singles “Pitch Black Serum” and “November“, their next track, “The Raven Is Gone” is fast, heavy, and undeniably epic, capturing the chaos of everyday struggles, bills, jobs, relationships, and the weight of modern life, and transforms them into a soaring, visceral anthem. Originally drafted years ago by vocalist/guitarist Fred A. Dubeau during a night of heavy drinking, the lyrics were rediscovered and brought to life with the band’s signature blend of aggression and melody.

“Sometimes, bands write songs just before recording an album, and sometimes there are song ideas that were there for years before actually writing and recording that said song. ‘The Raven Is Gone’ is about how you often go through similar issues every day… and can feel powerless about all the chaos it can create. The whole vibe is about being a metaphorical raven who escapes fire and blaze, and tries to find a safe place to hide somewhere. The music is written to be as powerful, epic, and catchy as possible,” adds Dubeau.

Due out November 21st, “Oblivisci” (Latin for “to forget”) is a dark, melodic, and emotionally charged record that explores themes of trauma, alienation, grief, loneliness, and addiction. The album’s artwork depicts a post-apocalyptic version of the band’s home city, reflecting its lyrical core: the desire to withdraw from reality and escape the weight of existence.

Musically, “Oblivisci” balances aggression and melody with precision, from thrash-driven assaults to atmospheric passages, from crushing heaviness to moments of haunting beauty. The record closes with the ambitious three-part suite “Dreamless Nights”, inspired by Fred’s personal struggles with alcohol addiction and the cycle of escape, bliss, and collapse.

Founded in 2007 by vocalist/guitarist, producer, and songwriter Fred A. Dubeau, Outlying hail from the industrial city of Trois-Rivières, Quebec. Their debut EP “Within The Jail Of The Unfortunate” arrived in 2008, followed by the full-length “Scars Of Daylight” in 2012. After lineup changes, bassist JD Poirier and French drummer Martin “Frenchy” Reithler joined, leading to the release of Frameworks For Repression in 2016.

In 2024, the band welcomed bassist Charles Alex Bilodeau, solidifying the current lineup. Outlying is now preparing to release “Oblivisci”, their most mature and focused work to date, heavier, more melodic, and unflinchingly honest.

Outlying’s music is best described as captivating, dark, aggressive, and melodic metal. Influenced by At The Gates, Testament, Cradle of Filth, In Flames, and Wintersun, their sound draws from melodic death, thrash, black, and groove metal. Their live shows are raw and passionate, relying on pure energy and musicianship rather than heavy backing tracks or overproduction.

Listen to their latest single “The Raven Is Gone” via its premiere on NoCleanSinging HERE.

“Oblivisci” will be available on all digital platforms on November 21st, 2025.

Trois-Rivières, QC-based metal band Outlying returns with a crushing new single, “Pitch Black Serum,” the fifth track off their upcoming full-length album “Oblivisci,” set for release on November 21st. Known for their captivating, dark, aggressive, and melodic sound, Outlying delivers a haunting dose of melodic death metal that explores the venomous grip of societal defeatism and indulgent escapism.

“Pitch Black Serum” is a sonic descent into the minds of those who’ve surrendered to the numbing comforts of modern life, porn, food, and video games, while the world outside decays. Creepy, visceral, and unrelenting, the track showcases Outlying’s signature blend of melody and brutality, with lyrics penned by frontman Fred A. Dubeau and drummer Martin “Frenchy” Reithler.

The single is a powerful preview of “Oblivisci,” Latin for “to forget,” a concept album that dives deep into trauma, alienation, grief, and addiction. The record culminates in a three-part epic chronicling Fred’s personal battles with substance abuse. With no filler tracks and a commitment to emotional authenticity, Outlying aims to deliver a “no skipped tracks” experience that resonates with fans of At The Gates, Testament, Cradle Of Filth, In Flames, and Wintersun.

Formed in 2007, Outlying began as a group of high school friends jamming covers. Over time, the band evolved into a mature, focused force in melodic metal, driven by Fred’s desire to move beyond “music for musicians” and create something raw and universally felt. The current lineup, Fred, Frenchy, and bassist Charles Alex Bilodeau, came together through a series of uncanny coincidences, including a soldering iron repair and a podcast heard across the Atlantic.

“Oblivisci” was crafted through a mix of in-person riff sessions and remote collaboration while Frenchy lived in France. The band selected tracks that reflect their full range, from groove-heavy bangers to thrashy assaults, melodic interludes, and the emotionally charged finale. The album artwork depicts a post-apocalyptic version of their adopted hometown, Trois-Rivières, a nod to the city’s gritty industrial roots and its vibrant metal scene.

Live, Outlying strips away the excess. No orchestras, no overused samples, just raw energy, passion, and dynamic instrumentation. Their shows are designed to keep audiences engaged from start to finish, offering varied ambiance and moods without relying on gimmicks.

With “Oblivisci,” Outlying invites listeners to confront the darkness, feel the weight of the lyrics, and ride the adrenaline of the music. “Pitch Black Serum” is just the beginning.

After nearly a decade of silence, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec metal band OUTLYING returns with a vengeance. Their long-awaited third full-length album, “Oblivisci,” drops November 21st, delivering a visceral blend of melodic death, thrash, and black metal that’s as emotionally raw as it is sonically aggressive. The first single, “November,” is now available for streaming on all major platforms.

Founded in 2007 by vocalist/guitarist Fred A. Dubeau, OUTLYING began as a group of high school friends jamming covers in 2003. Over the years, the band evolved into a force of original expression, rejecting technical excess in favor of music that hits straight to the gut.

“We wanted to create something anyone can feel and understand. Music that’s captivating, dark, aggressive, and melodic,” says Dubeau.

“Oblivisci,” Latin for “to forget,” is a concept album exploring themes of trauma, alienation, grief, and addiction. The band’s signature sound is heavier and more melodic than ever, with no filler tracks and a commitment to emotional authenticity. Fans can expect a dynamic listening experience, with tracks ranging from thrashy punk anthems to atmospheric ballads. Highlights include “Snow,” a harrowing tale of abuse featuring female vocals, and “Sentinel,” a grief-stricken power ballad that echoes the band’s earlier fan favorites. The album closes with a three-part epic chronicling Dubeau’s personal journey through substance abuse and recovery.

“After a long and challenging journey, we’re proud to finally share Oblivisci with the world. This album reflects our commitment to staying true to ourselves while evolving our sound. We’ve never followed trends; our music is dark, heavy, and emotionally charged, shaped by diverse influences from metal to classic rock, and even film, books, and games. Oblivisci builds on what OUTLYING has always stood for, but pushes deeper into atmosphere and intensity. Though often called melodic death metal, our sound draws from thrash, black, prog, and beyond. In a sea of forgettable songs, we hope this one leaves a mark,” adds Dubeau.

The first single, “November,” showcases OUTLYING’s evolved sound: a haunting, melodic death metal track about obsession and longing. It’s a powerful preview of what’s to come.

OUTLYING’s current lineup is a story of pure coincidence. Drummer Martin “Frenchy” Reithler first heard Fred on a metal podcast while living in France. After hearing Fred mention he was looking for a permanent drummer, Frenchy, who was already planning a move to Quebec, reached out. Fred initially thought the message was spam.

Later, Fred was asked by a friend to lend a soldering iron to fix a bass guitar. That visit led to him meeting Charles Alex Bilodeau. Weeks later, when searching for a new bassist, Fred remembered Charles Alex, and the lineup was complete.

Despite being based in Trois-Rivières, none of the members grew up there. Fred hails from near Bécancour, Charles Alex from Victoriaville, and Frenchy from a suburb near Paris, France.

Live, OUTLYING promises raw energy and passion, eschewing overproduced trends in favor of pure rock and roll intensity.

“We want every show to feel like a journey, different vibes, different ambiance, all created with just our instruments,” says Dubeau.

With influences ranging from At The Gates and Testament to Cradle of Filth and Wintersun, OUTLYING’s sound is rooted in melodic death metal, thrash, black, and groove metal. Their previous releases include Within The Jail Of The Unfortunate (EP) (2008), Scars Of Daylight (2012), and Frameworks For Repression (2016).

The album artwork for “Oblivisci” depicts a post-apocalyptic version of the band’s hometown, reflecting the lyrical themes of societal decay and personal collapse.

“Oblivisci” will be available on November 21st on all streaming platforms.
