HATRED REIGNS’ New Video “Absentia” Blurs The Lines Between Reality and Illusion

Unleashing their auditory journey “Awaken The Ancients” this past December, Canada’s brutal force Hatred Reigns not only released a full-length record, but a conceptual epic that traverses uncharted realms of sound and emotion. The album’s narrative follows a protagonist grappling with oppressive forces, leading to a summoning of the ancients who rise to liberate the tormented from their prolonged suffering. Plunged into an endless abyss, the tormented emerge upon a desolate shore, surrounded by aimless souls.
In a quest for liberation, the damned are ferried across by Charon who must navigate treacherous planes, confronting challenges from demons above and lurking waters below. Their odyssey takes them across the enigmatic river Styx, lured by the ancients towards Necropia, where ultimate judgment awaits.
The seventh track/story of eight on the album is “Absentia”, which tells the part of their tale of the vessel venturing onward, with the treacherous waters proving to be a metaphorical battleground. The Ancients, masters of manipulation, distort the perceptions of the voyagers. The chronicle’s protagonist’s senses are tampered with, blurring the lines between reality and illusion.
To give a visual admiration of this track’s relentless pillaging, Hatred Reigns has put together a 3D animated lyric video that can be seen and heard via its premiere on Ghost Cult Magazine HERE.
An eight-track sojourn into other worlds, paying homage to classic films and literature as well as their musical influences, “Awaken The Ancients” was mixed and mastered by vocalist Mitchi Dimitriadis, who also played a pivotal role in bringing guitarist Jeff Calder’s vision to life. Together with Calder, Dimitriadis developed orchestration soundscapes, incorporating percussive sounds, spoken word elements, and digital sound samples into the music.
Pedro “Lordigan” Sena, the album’s designer, crafted a masterful artwork piece that vividly depicts countless aimless souls preparing to face judgment. This artwork aligns seamlessly with the album’s thematic exploration and adds depth and vibrancy to the overall experience.
The tracks on the album are a testament to the band’s diverse influences, seamlessly woven into a unified entity that reflects their collective vision. The sonic journey they offer is a compelling fusion of their musical roots and is suggested for fans of Carcass, Behemoth, and Cryptopsy.
“Awaken The Ancients” was released on December 1, 2023, and is available at the following links:

“Hatred Reigns’ Awaken the Ancients is Brutality in Sound and Theme… For those of you who can’t get enough of their brutal technical death metal thematically based on What Dreams May Come, Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and love wallowing in the murky anguish of life’s darkness, take an audio gander at the stream of the album.” – Decibel Magazine
“this is a slab of high density, very technical death metal that fans will love” – Real Gone Rocks
“Hatred Reigns’ core death metal is sturdy, with bass guitar leads and overactive blast beats giving a technical spark to the album.” – Heavy Music HQ
“Fast, barebones, guttural death metal is what Hatred Reigns offer us here, and it’s bound to awaken the ancients indeed… If you’re into death metal at all, chances are good that you’ve heard this kind of no-frills death metal before, but in this crowded genre, Awaken the Ancients is certainly worth a listen. 4/5” – The Metal Crypt
“Hatred Reigns play to their strengths on this album opener (Awaken The Ancients), delivering speed and fury, but impressive agility as well as aggression. They unleash madness in the viciously sizzling and skittering riffage and ruthlessness in the bone-smashing hammer blows that segment the frenzies, and the monstrous guttural growls expel the words in barks that are almost as fast as the backing instrumentation. But the band also switch things up, slowing the tempo and injecting weirdly swirling arpeggios and then hitting the accelerator to bring forth an even more demented and delirious escapade, this time fronted by crazed screams and screeches as well as gritty growls, and propelled to further heights of lunacy by a fret-melter of a solo and bursts of maniacal drum battery. When the band decelerate again, the chords elevate it into an otherworldly realm, both menacing and haunting, and the band also layer in a little bass solo, a few humongous bass drops, and a hulking, lurching stomp. But of course they go back into the fast lane for one last burst of high-adrenaline barbarity as the song surges to the end.” – No Clean Singing
“‘Departing Archeon’, grabs me where I didn’t expect (You can see the video for this at the bottom of this page). This time the vocal and lyrics are instantly engaging… accessible and menacing ‘Welcome… We’ve been waiting for You…’ which somehow made me smile from ear to ear. And just wait for that main riff – it’s f**king perfection. Simple, brutal and so utterly worthy of a headbang. Looking over the release notes they compare their release to ‘Origin’, Suffocation, and Hideous Divinity, but I’m getting vibes of classic Thrash and Death Metal. Think early Sepultura, Gorefest and Carcass, especially with that DIY ethos those thrown in too. It enables them to keep their influences close to their heart and do exactly what they want to. Overall, it took me a few listens to the album to appreciate how good it is. It’s a complex album that doesn’t hide behind overly technical playing … it knows how to keep the riffs simple, crunchy and heavy… Incredible stuff.” – Music Trespass

Canada’s Hatred Reigns offers a brutal assault on unsuspecting listeners. They believe in a no-holds-barred approach and do not relinquish their grip until the last note is unleashed. Their latest release “Awaken The Ancients” is an eight-track sojourn into other worlds, paying homage to classic films and literature as well as their musical influences. For those who like to get into the nitty gritty, they now present a playthrough video for the track “To Depths Unknown”, which the band comments on, along with the album:
“Frantically falling, flailing to and fro,” the protagonist is caught in a whirlwind of uncertainty, grappling with the unpredictable twists of their destiny. Their ultimate destination remains shrouded in mystery as they descend into the abyss of the unknown. The album encountered numerous adversities during its recording process, including COVID-19 lockdowns, illnesses, technical challenges, and complex musical arrangements. Despite these hurdles, the band’s unwavering dedication has resulted in an album that defies conventional limitations.”
Vocalist Mitchi Dimitriadis, who mixed and mastered the album, played a pivotal role in bringing guitarist Jeff Calder’s vision to life. Together with Calder, Dimitriadis developed orchestration soundscapes, incorporating percussive sounds, spoken word elements, and digital sound samples into the music. Ottawa, Canada’s Hatred Reigns is once again shaking the death metal world, this time with “Awaken The Ancients”, a concept album that gives nods to classical literature and death metal titans that was released on December 1st, 2023. Taking modern metal into a new realm of technical riffs, abrasive gutturals, and chest-shaking blast beats, Hatred Reigns presents diverse musical influences in a deadly package that will appeal to a wide variety of headbangers. The band shares the lyrical theme behind the latest video for their single “Ushered By Charon”:
“Awakening to a surreal reality, the protagonist finds themselves in a desolate wasteland at the water’s edge. Surrounding them are countless lost souls, adrift and purposeless. A vessel emerges on the horizon, guided by a disheveled figure at its helm—Charon, the Ferrier of souls. “Awaken The Ancients” is designed to be a complete listening experience, guiding the audience from Realm I: Affliction through the treacherous Realm II: Affirmation.”

The singles on this album serve as bookends, paying homage to the musician’s favourite bands while incorporating elements from songs in the middle of the album that resonated with them, offering a visually appealing representation of their music. The creation of the album was a collaborative effort, with guitarist Jeff Calder conceiving the songs and the band members infusing their own ideas into the final compositions. Some elements evolved over various arrangements, while others came together organically and swiftly with minimal adjustments.
Hatred Reigns intends to assault listeners’ senses with a barrage of diverse soundscapes, creating an expansive and emotionally charged journey across the realms they explore in their epic voyage to Necropia. They are best suited for fans of Behemoth, Cryptopsy, and Suffocation.

HATRED REIGNS Is Now Streaming Their Death Metal Labour Of Love And Dedication “Awaken The Ancients”
New Album “Awaken The Ancients” Out December 1st, 2023
|
|
L-R – Jeff Calder – Guitars, Adam Semler – Bass & Vocals, Neil Grandy – Drums, Mitchi Dimitriadis – Vocals
Canada’s Hatred Reigns is a convergence of masterful musicians, each with a rich and storied background in the music industry. They came together in 2015 and released their first EP “Realm I: Affliction” in 2018. They follow it up now with “Awaken The Ancients”, which weaves together the elements of old-school death metal with modern technical intricacies, creating a sonic tapestry that is both captivating and groundbreaking.
The lyrics on this concept album are inspired by the film “What Dreams May Come”, the novels Dante’s “Inferno”, John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” and the mental anguish and exploits that many of us experience but choose life vs succumbing to the ever-looming darkness.
“In a quest for liberation, the damned are ferried across by Charon who must navigate treacherous planes, confronting challenges from demons above and lurking waters below. Their odyssey takes them across the enigmatic river Styx, lured by the ancients towards Necropia, where ultimate judgement awaits. We are unleashing an infernal symphony of brutality and precision! Our music is a testament to the raw power and intricate craftsmanship that defines death metal. Each member has their own barrage of styles and influences which created the unique twist that is Hatred Reigns.” adds the band.
“Awaken The Ancients” is not just an album; it’s a conceptual epic that traverses uncharted realms of sound and emotion. The album’s narrative follows a protagonist grappling with oppressive forces, leading to a summoning of the ancients who rise to liberate the tormented from their prolonged suffering. Plunged into an endless abyss, the tormented emerge upon a desolate shore, surrounded by aimless souls. This is not an adventure for the faint of heart, and should only be attempted by the hardiest of metalheads, those with a penchant for Origin, Carcass, and Behemoth.

Metalheads, brace yourselves for a transcendent tech death experience as Ottawa, Canada’s Hatred Reigns prepares to release their concept album, “Awaken The Ancients” on December 1st, 2023. This captivating offering delivers more than your standard technical death metal fare as it bridges the journey from 2018’s “Realm I: Affliction” to the perilous and unrevealed “Realm II: Affirmation”. The band comments:
“”Awaken The Ancients” stands as a testament to years of unwavering dedication and unyielding determination. The album’s thematic inspiration derives from an eclectic mix of films, literature, and the visceral experience of facing a spectacular demise. Divided into two realms, “Affliction” and “Affirmation,” the album offers a profound navigation of the protagonist’s perspectives and trials as they embark on their voyage to Necropia.”
Hatred Reigns combines Jeff Calder’s face-melting riffs and licks with Mitchi Dimitriadis’s enigmatic vocals (who also recorded, mixed, and mastered the album), complemented by Neil Grandy’s grinds and gravity blasts, all anchored by Adam Semler’s thunderous low-end. The band’s untamed raw energy during live performances adds an extra layer of intensity to their already formidable sound.
Defined by their chaotic, aggressive, unpredictable, enigmatic, and orchestral approach to music, Hatred Reigns unleashes an infernal symphony of brutality and precision. Their music is a testament to the raw power and intricate craftsmanship that defines death metal. Each member brings a barrage of styles and influences that contribute to the unique twist that is Hatred Reigns. They are recommended for fans of Origin, Suffocation, and Hideous Divinity.

Hatred Reigns, an uncompromising force hailing from the Ottawa Capital Region of Ontario introduced themselves with force back in 2018 with their concept debut “Realm I: Affliction”, which ushered listeners into the depths of Hell. This year, they will continue their descent with “Awaken The Ancients”, the first single being “Departing Acheron” presented now with a music video. The lyrics on the album are inspired by the film “What Dreams May Come”, the novels Dante’s “Inferno”, John Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, and the mental anguish and exploits that many of us experience but choose life vs succumbing to the ever-looming darkness. The band comments on the meaning behind the single:
“Approaching the shores of Necropia, the realm of judgment, the vessel sails closer to its destination. The Ancients intensify their efforts to deceive and ensnare the voyagers. Their intention is to imprison these souls, subjecting them to a fate dictated by the Ancients themselves, just before they face their ultimate judgment.”
