Recognizing the talent and achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC MUSIC AWARDS shines the spotlight on Canada’s fourth largest city, and the vibrant music scene that calls its home.
Honouring artists in 20 categories, which include two new categories this year – Classical Recording of the Year and Industry Person of the Year (full list below), the 2017 YYC MUSIC AWARDS will be taking submissions until May 31st for the 2nd annual gala being held on September 24th at The Palace Theatre.

Eligibility Requirements:
The eligibility period for the 2017 YYC Music Awards is between March 1, 2016 and February 28, 2017. This time frame will be strictly enforced, and we will not accept submissions for materials recorded outside this time frame.
“Release date” for YYCMA purposes is defined as the date of first shipment to retail, radio or posted online release date. Proof of online transaction or shipment may be requested. This applies to all submissions whether single, album or video!
People’s Choice category and Zackariah and the Prophets categories are excluded from this requirement.
Artists from the Calgary area, including Airdrie, Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, Strathmore and areas up to a maximum 125 km radius of the City of Calgary.
Submissions Deadline:
To be considered for a 2017 YYC Music Award, submissions must be received by midnight on May 31, 2017. No extensions will be granted.
Submission Fee:
Please note, there will be a $5.00 per category submission fee this year. You will be taken to a payment page when you hit submit at the end of the form.

This award is not about the most polished band or most professional yet, they may not even have more than a couple of demo’s posted so far but it’s about the band that is taking all those baby steps and embody possibility and promise, taking into account the criteria outlined below:
Progression: progression of skills, musicality, and presence in local scene.
Musicality: blend on instruments, interesting musical concepts, overall song layout and structure.
Originality: a unified and distinct sound, compositional arrangement, unique and interesting.
Direction: sense of unified sound and layout displayed in EP or sound samples. Cohesive throughout.
Social media presence: easily found online content. Information regarding releases, shows, general band/artist info. Open to artist with 2 or less independent releases.
Artists are required to submit an essay of 500 words or less, outlining why they think they should be considered for the Zackariah and the Prophets Memorial Award, based on the above criteria. This can include but is not exclusive to highlighting steps you are taking to build your band and brand, accomplishments you have achieved and where you are at in your career. Just tell us who you are and what you are about.
In addition, the YYC Music Awards is accepting volunteer applications leading up to and for the gala along with membership for CMSC – Calgary Music Selection Committee, who are our voting members.

Blending a sound that is a complex mix of classical orchestrations, cosmic synths, and extreme metal to portray the epics of parallel worlds, Hickory, N.C. based Rapheumets Well (Ra-few-mets) bring forth a voyage enriched with lore, fabricated from scratch to show the depth in which represents them as artists.
Inspired by the fictitious universe of Sovael, Rapheumets Well is the name coined to the conscious deity who oversees the anastomosis of the multiverse, the master of portals and inter-dimensional travel. Being personified as a trickster, Rapheumet often creates chaos for unsuspecting voyagers. The word “Well” refers to the gravity wells, which like black holes, are catalyst of change and gateways between the cosmic plains.
“We created this name in hopes of personifying a living gateway between dimensions. We love science fiction and a few of us have extended education and degrees in science.” says drummer Joshua Ward.
Formed in 2008, 2011 and 2012 saw their first two demos followed by their first self release full length ‘Dimensions’ unleashed in 2014 that progressively told a larger story portrayed in a complex saga of Atai (ancient architects) who aid in the propagation of sentient life throughout the multi-verse. In 2016, they released their highly praised sophomore album ‘The Exile’ via Test Your Metal Records
From the birth of organic matter to great wars that tear the fabric of space/time, the story of Rapheumets Well’s music serves to immerse you into a world of oddities, which is now continued in the band’s third release ‘Enders Door’ due out on May 26th via Test Your Metal Records.

The whole album put me in a good mood. Although I am a fan of a more distorted and fuzz-y sounding stoner rock, this was a great cleaned up take…The killer trio band have really created their own rules. One of which is trying to throw out stoner rock stereotypes. And it’s working brilliantly for them. Beyond the Sun is exactly what one would expect from Woodhawk. Riffs and riffs and riffs and high energy drums and more riffs…Moral of the story: this is the perfect CD to pop on when you feel like dancing in your underwear while cleaning your room. I would recommend “Beyond the Sun” to anyone who would like a less distorted version of Red Fang. Which is definitely a compliment, for the record.
