As the metal community regains its strength, Wacken Open Air 2025 will be the 34th edition of the festival and will be held from July 30th – August 2nd. The 2025 event is already sold out with a line-up that includes Machine Head, Saltatio Mortis, Papa Roach, Gojira, Apocalyptica, Saxon, Within Temptation, Dimmu Borgir, Ministry, and many more. Details here.

About:

Wacken Metal Battle Canada is part of an international competition that sees bands from across the country battle each other for the chance to win their spot among 30 other countries’ champions, and represent Canada in an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival: Wacken Open Air. The battles have been hosted at the festival for over a decade giving independent bands the opportunity to showcase their talents to an international audience along with the chance to win multiple prizes.

How it works:

Participating cities will host qualifying rounds plus a city final organized by a local city concert promoter where one band will move forward to the Canadian national final (date and city to be determined). The winner of the national final will move on to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2025 and compete against the winners of 29 other countries in a final global battle. All battle rounds are judged by respected local music industry representatives.

Formed in early 2019, Red Deer, AB’s Art Of Attrition is a band that redevelops “the typical” deathcore sound by delivering aggression with melody, atmosphere with intricacy, and brutality with technicality. Combining ferocious work ethic with refined musicality, their songs challenge the notion that deathcore cannot evolve or be unique.

In July 2024, they unleashed their EP “…And It Will All End Forever” to follow their 2023 debut album “Void Eternal”. As a whole, their latest EP brought listeners disgusting breakdowns, matched by speed and intense guitar work that channeled emotions such as anger and anxiety. Hauntingly memorable solos gave way to epic choruses that share relatable moments. A whirlwind of deathcore it’s matched with classic black metal, and capitalized with bits of groove and creative drum parts.

On February, 14th, 2025, Art of Attrition will unshackle their first single of 2025, entitled “Subserviate & Decay”. The new song is an experimentation of some particular ideas that the band has over the years. With such diverse musical tastes, Art of Attrition is bringing some evolutionary ideas into their material for a new world order to “throw down”.

“Since the speed is incredibly fast, you get the feeling that every song is a 10-minute epic, but they are all in the 5-minute plus/minus direction. But epic is a good keyword, because every single piece has such technical power that you really need several runs to understand, what’s actually going on and that’s what brings tears of joy to the eyes of every metal fan who loves the technical hidden refinements. A small highlight is probably the last of the four songs, as well as the title song “…And It Will All End Forever”, which expresses the band’s entire range and makes it clear to everyone, what is meant by “Technical Deathcore”.9.5/10” – Hellfire Magazin

““…And It Will All End Forever” rises to the surface with the speed and dexterity of bands like Archspire. Mesmerising lead guitars shine brightly above the powerhouse rhythms, momentary silences between anvil heavy sections giving fleeting respite. A gargantuan monolithic breakdown is the last thing you might expect to hear on a track with such stunning lead guitars but the band brought it and it is nothing short of brutal, contrasted perfectly the delicate piano fade out. It’s hard to fathom how this band are not on a major label because this record is sublime [9/10]” – metal Noise

“Blackened technical deathcore… brutal and pissed off too” – 89.9 WORT FM – The Moshpit (Madison, WI)

“But then the EP’s ending title track. Holy fuck do they knock it out of the park with 6 minutes of killer melodies, a killer chorus and key/choirs, and a massive breakdown that make it an absolutely killer track, maybe one of the year’s best in the genre” – Teeth of The Divine

“The epic song (Dark Green) is a good indication of what the rest of the record holds, which is plenty of blues, psychedelia, and prog rock.” – Decibel Magazine

“How about a new prog-rock instrumental?! The title track “Dark Green” from the forthcoming album has arrived from progressive stoner rockers, TUMBLEWEED DEALER and we’re digging it. We’ve also had the opportunity to preview the new album and it’s also a strong statement and should sit well with prog lovers. Keep an eye out for the album to be released on Feb. 7th and catch the single “Dark Green” now on your Home for the Best New Rock…” – WJOE – Findlay’s Home for Rock & Roll

“Tumbleweed Dealer’s “Dark Green,” the title track from their upcoming album out on February 7th, is a lesson in blending diverse musical influences into a singular, gripping piece. Clocking in at just under five minutes, the song showcases the band’s evolution and fearless creativity by weaving elements of blues, psychedelia, and progressive rock into a dynamic and unpredictable journey. The track builds a narrative through its seamless shifts in tone and texture. From introspective melodies to bursts of raw energy, the track balances complexity with accessibility. Antoine Baril’s vintage keys anchor the composition, giving it a retro flair, while Zach Strouse’s saxophone solo adds an unexpected but welcome layer of richness. Tumbleweed Dealer’s roots in extreme music shine subtly through black metal-inspired melodies and brief flashes of double bass drum that are a nod to their past without overshadowing their current direction. This contrast between intensity and finesse underscores the band’s skill in pushing genre boundaries.“Dark Green” not only introduces the thematic essence of the album but it also captures the spirit of exploration that has defined Tumbleweed Dealer’s evolution.” – Amplify The Noise

” a bold evolution of their signature blend of bluesy desert rock and progressive experimentation.” – Montreal Rocks

“This is one of those compositions that requires total immersion. Clean singing, bah who needs singing at all?! Recorded with finetuned care so you can hear all the little fret squeaks before they ramp up the ambience straight from a John Fruscianterecord. With synths and other keys that chameleon-ize said maestro’s voice, later emulating the sound of a backing choir that then morphs into church organ. When the atmospherics basking in the background saunter forth, the darker shades of green start to realize and the track enters the domain of prog royalty. As a double kick is racing the throbbing-for-the-last-gasp procreative releases of the bass before flamenco-picking a Morricone lick ghosted into a pregnant silence to just nod for the memory of a note that enticingly lures like an anglerfish with, “you ready for more?” The timestamp at termination is 4:51 but this is some form of dimension-manipulating chronomancy because the track feels like it is over quicker than Napalm Death’s “You Suffer.” That means I’m either suffering from THC-induced crapulence or my favorite drug just happens to be music; and when it’s layered this well, with so much to encounter on repeat listens, it can truly have the magical property of transcendental transportation.” – No Clean Singing

0 Toronto Prog JUPITER HOLLOW Announces Ontario Dates + New Single / Video “Incivility”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 5, 2025

Toronto Prog JUPITER HOLLOW Announces Ontario Dates + New Single / Video “Incivility”

L-R – Nathaniel Reynolds-Welsh – Drums – Grant MacKenzie – Guitar, Kenny Parry – Vocals, John-Ryan Godfrey – Bass

Toronto proggers Jupiter Hollow announces they will perform two Ontario show dates for March and April with more to be announced in the coming year (listed below). The band has been expanding their catalog with their latest single and music video “Incivility” (watch below) released this past November as they make progress on more music to be released in the coming months.

Upcoming Shows:
March 29 – Guelph @ Red Papaya – info – w/ Derev, Crown For A King, +1 TBA
April 12 – Brantford @ Brandi’s – info w/ Derev, +2 TBA

Pushing from one horizon onto the next, Jupiter Hollow‘s growth has come a long way since making their debut as a duo in 2015. Led by the fearless Grant MacKenzie and Kenny Parry, this recording and songwriting powerhouse duo has transformed into a live quartet with the addition of John Ryan Godfrey (Bass) and Nathaniel Reynolds-Welsh (Drums).

Advancing their unique brand of progressive rock/metal, the band’s latest single “Incivility” serves as a bold statement, reflecting Jupiter Hollow’s evolution both sonically and thematically. With its intricate arrangements, evocative lyrics, and captivating visuals, the single is a testament to the band’s relentless dedication to pushing artistic boundaries.

The band comments on the single:

“At its core, Incivility reflects humanity’s inner struggles, the relentless pursuit of purpose, and the emotional void created by modern distractions. The lyrics delve into themes of arrogance, wasted time, and the consequences of superficial existence, symbolized by “filming your bones”—a critique of documenting life rather than living it.

The song wrestles with the tension between ambition and the emptiness of unmet expectations, asking hard questions: At what cost do we chase our dreams? and How do we reconcile purpose with the pressures we hide? The recurring imagery of the “yawning cage of wasted love” evokes a profound sense of entrapment, urging listeners to confront the emotional weight of past mistakes while seeking true fulfillment.

Musically and lyrically, Incivility challenges listeners to reflect on their lives, embracing the discomfort of self-awareness while pushing forward with resilience. It’s both a cautionary tale and a call to action—demanding authenticity in a world that often values the opposite.”

Recommended for fans of Porcupine Tree, Coheed, and Cambria, Rush, and Protest The Hero.

With thought-provoking lyrics, unique vocal melodies, harmonies, powerful guitar riffs, unyielded songwriting, and Jupiter Hollow’s incessant desire to bring fans on a journey, there’s always something new to explore. Thus far they have two full-length albums under their belts: 2020’s “Bereavement”, and 2018’s “AHDOMN”, and they have another one in the works. Planning to release more singles over the coming months, Jupiter Hollow will take the time to ensure a polished, impressive offerings song by song. The band wants nothing more than to make their art and share the experience with as many people as they can.

“If Jupiter Hollow are emblematic of the next generation of progressive metal bands, a bright tomorrow lies ahead. Hugely impressive.” – Prog Magazine.

“Comparisons to bands like Tool, Live, A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails come easy and for good reason. This is the new generation of players who are putting their spin on all things progressive, industrial and synthy. The grandsons of Genesis and Yes, this is progressive rock for the youth of today who find the originators a bit to baroque for their tastes… Their sound is built to appeal to fans of so many genres and preferences it should be a slam dunk.” – Skulls n’ Bones

“JUPITER HOLLOW just produced the best prog metal album of all time this year, condensing, mixing and forging a hot musical steel here.” – Prog Archives

“Each track displays plenty of musicianship from this young duo, with vocals continuing to strengthen and songwriting solidifying.” – Heavy Music Headquarters

“A young Canadian duo ready to bring fans of complex music a spacey, experimental and refreshing experience… bursting with high-quality heaviness and progressiveness.” – The Headbanging Moose

============

Quiescent Mantis‘ debut album “Here Comes The Swarm” was produced by Yanic Bercier (Quo Vadis, Gone In April) at WaveTransform Recording Studio and unleashed in July 2024 on Exitus Stratagem Records. The genre-defying release blends elements of hardcore, thrash, death, and metalcore into a whirlwind of relentless aggression.

Formed during the tumultuous COVID-19 lockdown, Quiescent Mantis emerged from the fusion of former scientists Chris Trainor, Jordan McKenzie, and Johnny Mejia. Previously employed by the enigmatic Sub-atomic Weight Of Acceleration Research Mechanics (S.W.A.R.M.), the trio embarked on a musical journey after inadvertently opening a doorway to the mantis homeworld during a particle collision experiment, exposing themselves to a mind-altering pheromone. Thus, the Chapter 1 demo was born in 2021.

Inspired by a love for old science fiction movies and thrash metal, Quiescent Mantis presents a unique, aggressive, groovy, heavy, and relentless sound that blends old-school metal techniques with new-school innovations. The band aims to provide listeners with a groundbreaking experience, combining elements of classic and contemporary metal in a manner never before heard. They are recommended for fans of Orbit Culture, Havok, and Power Trip.

“With this album, it truly shows not only how we come together as musicians but as storytellers. This album is all the best elements of thrash metal and science fiction horror movies put into one single package. ‘Here Comes The Swarm’ is the sound we created to release the swarm to the world.”

“Loaded with battle vests, beer, baldness and breakdowns, Quiescent Mantis have delivered a highly entertaining four minutes into the conversation (Primal Aggression Music Video).” – Decibel Magazine

“With its aggressive riffs, its rhythms implacable and his stimulating lyrics inspired as much by science fiction as of recent experiences, Here Comes The Swarm delivers a good punch in the face! This album brings together All the best elements of thrash metal and it should appeal to fans of Orbit Culture, Power Trip, Havok and Pantera! 4.5/5” – Metallian Magazine

“QUIESCENT MANTIS does a great job, delivers strong performance and is also well positioned in terms of craftsmanship.” – PowerMetal.de”The trio takes thrash metal and punches in hardcore and death metal for a release complete with constant twists.” – Heavy Music Headquarters

“An album to seek out if a fun and engaging trip into an extreme metal meets thrash metal type of universe is a prospect that intrigues you.” – The Viking in the Wilderness

“Biting down on a stick the trio then get anvil heavy with groove laden title track “Here Comes The Swarm“, an intense tune with a cool bass solo and the kind of vocal brutality that might make you think this was another band entirely. Dirty, dirge laden riffs dredge the lake in search of corpses and the result is a headbangable mosh pit filler than is absolutely delicious.” – Metal Noise

“Here Comes the Swarm is a testament to Quiescent Mantis’ ability to turn an extraordinary backstory into a powerful metal experience. The album’s intricate blend of aggressive sounds and thematic depth makes it a standout release in the metal genre.” – Amplify The Noise

“‘Primal Form of Aggression’ thrives on an exquisite use of the mid-range power chords in the opening riff. Then, the trio force a hardcore beatdown crunch on the listener like vigilantes cleaning the hoodlums off their streets. Dimebag Darrell’s DNA is all over these chunky guitar constructs. The spaced-out breakdown at the end is a generous gift for a live audience to appreciate.” – Scream Blast Repeat

“It’s a fun ride from QUIESCENT MANTIS and even the awkward parts are pretty easy to overlook. I’ll bet this band is a neck-wrecker live!” – Wormwood Chronicles

Band: These Cursed Hands
EP: Intelligent (RE)Design
Release: November 1, 2024
Label: Self-Release
Distribution: DistroKid

“We hope this EP will set a much better tone for the music we intend to continue creating. We have really come together in our writing process and honed in on the overall sound we are trying to achieve. We truly gel together, both as musicians and as friends. We hope people get a mix of brutal heaviness with some ambiance too. We love the journey of peaks and valleys that songs like Perihelion and Event Horizon have.  The melodic parts really bring the songs down to make the heavy parts more impactful. Then we have songs like Obsolete Beings and Murderous Intent that just hit you in the face the whole time.” – Travis Cody – These Cursed Hands

““Intelligent (RE)Design” is an impressive display of extreme metal that mixes black metal, metalcore, deathcore, and death metal in an attractively intense sound. These Cursed Hands bring a sense of nostalgia with their music while still bringing a modern and distinctly unique sound to the table. ” – The Metal Verse (2024 – Intelligent (RE)Design)

“These Cursed Hands create a powerful chorus that utilizes sing-screaming to hit melodic notes while still using extreme vocals and continuing the momentum of the song. The band does an excellent job of adding in blackened influences and making the music have an evil and dark overall feel. The track goes into an immersive guitar solo that fades out the song on a highly technical note. Fans of death metal, deathcore, and blackened metal genres will really enjoy These Cursed Hands!” The Metal Verse (2023 – Hell Breaks Loose (single)

===============================================

About The Album Artwork:

The artwork was done by a good friend of Travis’, Parick “Wadl” Hofmeister.  He is an amazing artist who is very detailed in his painting concepts and then goes extremely detailed in his execution.

The artwork for this album represents the co-opting of humanity’s biomass as we are remade by the artificial beings sent to replace us. The hand, desperate to escape, is slowly being absorbed by the biomechanical structures in which it is entwined. – Wesley Griswold

About the EP as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

Musically this album is a dynamic array of sounds and styles, featuring everything from melodic death and black metal to chunky deathcore and brutal death, with even some more ambient sections to haunt the listener. – Wesley Griswold

Track By Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

1. Advent – This short intro sets the apocalyptic tone for the album, with audio clip from the original 1938 War of the Worlds radio broadcast by Orson Welles.

2. Extermination Revelation – This song opens with epic blackened dissonance before moving into a mix of epic melodic death metal riffs and soaring choruses.

3. Murderous Intent – Murderous Intent is an absolute slugfest of deathcore chugs and death metal riffage.

4. Onset – The extermination has begun, and the artificial siren song of our new overlords rings across the land in this short interlude.

5. Obsolete Beings – In Obsolete Beings, we show our thrashier side, with a mix of lightning-fast riffs and hard-hitting choruses capped off with an absolutely crushing breakdown.

6. Perihelion – Perihelion is our most structurally complex song, moving between haunting ambiance and crushing death metal and deathcore riffs.

7. Collapse – In this brief intermezzo, humanity is now all but lost, enslaved, and consumed by our new masters who know only logic and cold calculation.

8. Event Horizon – Our most epic and melodic piece, Event Horizon is a strong coda to our EP that showcases our more progressive side with soaring melodies and a haunting bridge section with guest vocals from Sasha Gordy. – Wesley Griswold

Hailing from the darkest, dankest depths of Portland Oregon’s fecund metal scene, These Cursed Hands produce a synthesis of the best elements of black, progressive, core, death, and thrash metal that reduces even the most experienced metal listener into a quivering mass of bodily fluids slowly leeching out into the ground. Their vocal aggression, earthshaking heaviness, explosive rhythm, and face-melting riffage regularly annihilate whole audiences, leaving only ashen smears where fans once stood. As the sun rises on these scenes of sonic devastation, the few remaining survivors will pull themselves from the rubble and spread the cursed word.

Hail Liviyatin! The curse is upon us.

Hungary’s SIN OF GOD is unleashing a tsunami of relentless extreme metal with “Black Waves”, the second single off their new album “Blood Bound” out on February 18th, 2025 from Exitus Stratagem Records. The track is a barrage of fearless death metal that will drown your senses in an apocalyptic world without escape.

Listen to “Black Waves” at https://youtu.be/u6h13peGlrs

With influences in thrash, ODM, and blackened and progressive death metal, Sin of God‘s next sacrificial offering “Blood Bound” will please both old and new-school death metal fans at the same time. This new full-length presents a collection of variations that exhibit brutality and softness. It is something fans have heard in the past from the band but it has never sounded like this.

Exploring our present society, the record resonates with everything surrounding us, from the good and the bad to the beautiful and ugly, to life and death. “Blood Bound” is not a concept album, but it is united by the pain and rage that boils inside and felt over seven slaughtering tracks.

“This record is somewhat different from the previous ones. It’s more complex and based on modern death metal. We built Blood Bound musically on contrasts. There are amazingly fast parts (260 BPM) but really slow parts as well. It’s old-school and new-school death metal at the same time. Blood Bound is (life and) death metal at its finest, not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure!” adds guitarist Tamás Kis.

Recommended for fans of Aborted, Bloodbath, Cattle Decapitation, Cryptopsy, and Psycroptic, Sin of God’s fourth studio album “Blood Bound” is out on February 18, 2025, from Exitus Stratagem Records, and available for physical pre-order and digital pre-save at the following links:

“The record is just killer, full of menacing death metal that doesn’t lean too hard into the old- or new-school sound; think a crossbreed of Book of Black Earth, Deicide, and Fleshgod Apocalypse sans opera, and you’ll have some idea of what these guys are like. Modern death metal fans will love the band’s technicality and production, while classic headbangers will dig their atmosphere and badass riffs. Definitely get into them.” – Metalsucks (Aenigmata – 2016)

“Aenigmata is the band’s latest release, a merciless, destructive Death Metal album in its finest form. Inspired by the occult writings of Alchemy and the dissection of the faith in mankind, the album delivers much darkened and more ferocious sounds than the previous releases. Having a close kinship with bands like Morbid Angel, Immolation, Nile, Behemoth, Krisiun, Dead Congregation and the likes in terms of sonority, the opus is a perfect blending of unilluminated Traditional Death Metal & remorseless Brutal/Technical Death Metal. The 09 tracked album is likely to be embraced by the fans of OSDM & Dark Themed Technical Death Metal.” – Extreminal (Aenigmata – 2016)

“The Hungarians from Sinf Of God play high-energy death metal, and when their riffs hit our eardrums, you get the impression that Attila himself is leading the wild hordes, leaving behind fields of destruction strewn with the corpses of enemies.” – KVLT (Aenigmata – 2016)

“There’s very little to complain about “Aenigmata”, it sounds damn good, both from a musical and production perspective. The songs are varied and technical and it took a few spins for the record to settle but that normally is a good thing as it grows for each spin… it’s a solid Death Metal record and with this, I should go easily to it when digging out Brutal music.” – Metal Kaoz – (Aenigmata – 2016)
