Shores of Null‘s delivered a powerful performance at Hellfest in France this past summer as part of the band’s extensive touring in support of their new album “The Loss of Beauty”. This fourth album follows the acclaimed “Beyond The Shores (On Death And Dying)”, unanimously considered by fans and critics as one of the doom-metal gems of recent years. Both albums were recorded between 2019 and early 2020, and although “The Loss of Beauty” was initially conceived as the band’s third album, ‘Beyond The Shores’ took its place as it better reflected the doom and gloom sentiment of the ‘annus horribilis’ 2020.
Across 11 tracks (plus two bonus tracks), Shores Of Null once again submerges listeners with tempestuous and turbulent riffs. The band continues to hone its sound and take its melancholic dark metal to new heights by mastering an assorted palette of genres with inbred poignancy. The lyrics celebrate beauty in imperfection and transience and are meant to be an invitation to seek beauty in little things, especially those unexpected and ephemeral.
Dark and heavy, tinged with feelings of despair, “The Loss Of Beauty” was released on March 24th, 2023, and recommended for fans of Swallow The Sun, Borknagar, and Paradise Lost.

About: Shores of Null stand out from their contemporaries with their ability to blend seemingly disparate elements into their sound, overwhelmingly heavy and soothing at the same time: blackened aggression stands alongside gothic-doom sections without either sounding out of place. Their music can be both melancholic yet majestic, made of chorale-like guitar textures across the instrument’s entire range, sustained by a powerful rhythmic section and punctuated by a refined mixture of clean and growled vocals, along with extensive use of pleasing vocal harmonies which have become the band’s trademark through the years.
The Rome-based metal band has been an unwavering presence within the metal underground since their musical outset in 2013, churning out three impressive records: the melodic and somber “Quiescence” (Candlelight, 2014), the darker and more complex “Black Drapes For Tomorrow” (Candlelight/Spinefarm, 2017), and finally their most ambitious work to date “Beyond The Shores (On Death And Dying)” (Spikerot Records, 2020), a 38-minute long opus which continues to prove the band’s willingness to go off the beaten path while creating their ultimate doom manifesto.
The band’s fourth album “The Loss Of Beauty”, recorded during the same sessions of “Beyond The Shores”, was released in March of 2023.

Metal Hammer writers’ top metal albums of 2023 – Edwin McFee – #20 – Shores of Null – The Loss of Beauty
“Once again, Shores of Null continue to impress with yet another slab of high-quality doom/death that seems the quintet on an upwards trajectory. Their “Alice in Chains gone doom” recipe needs no repairing, thank you kindly, and while they’ve been around for nearly a decade, it’s still exciting to see where they go from here, because it still feels like The Loss of Beauty is hinting at even greater things to come. Add this to your overcast morning breakfast coffee moments, or your sunny afternoon chillout sessions.” – Angry Metal Guy
“With The Loss of Beauty, Shores of Null have released a hot contender for my album of the year, which I can warmly recommend to every fan of melancholic metal with doom, gothic, melodic death and black metal influences! I give this masterpiece the highest grade!” – Soundmagnet Magazin
“I highly recommend spending a quiet hour listening to the record with headphones.” – Powermetal.de
“It is a highly entertaining set of songs that comes together well nonetheless and leads to an emotional impact upon the listener. Fans of melancholic doom metal will find a lot to like here.” – Metal Bite
“with this new work, the Shores Of Null have shown all their majestic talent: The Loss Of Beauty is an album that mixes evil and joy, clarity and impurity, melodies and distortions with extreme dexterity. An album that will attract you thanks to its enchanting idyllic and romantic scores but which will make you unleash as soon as the rough and atrocious parts come into play: a record capable of transporting the interlocutor into a mystical and fairy environment but simultaneously unhealthy and distressing. Nothing to add: listen to them and I’m sure you will have yourselves confirmed everything I said!” – Metal Wave
“”The Loss Of Beauty” has not lost its beautiful melodies And it is exactly this mix that SHORES OF NULL keep to the end of the album… “The Loss Of Beauty” convinces by far Stretches through its refreshing heterogeneity. Straccione’s very strong vocal performance does the rest.” – Metal.de
“The Loss Of Beauty offers melancholic dark metal with a wide range of influences, from gothic metal to doom metal to melodic black/death metal. With frequent use of clean vocals and deep growls. A must for fans of Paradise Lost, Amorphis and Enslaved.” – Metalogy

Rattling the moshpits worldwide with their new album “Think Before You Think” on Boonsdale Records, Montreal, Canada’s MUTANK is offering a slab of new mind-blowing speed thrash with their latest video “Channel Change”. It’s a song about media melting your brain and your choice to either form something new from it yourself or let them do it for you.

MUTANK made a big impression on the Canadian metal scene in 2014 with their debut EP “M.E.C.H METAL”. In that same year, they were also declared champions of the Wacken Metal Battle Canada which garnered them a performance at Wacken Open Air (Live Video – https://youtu.be/yQrLaG8BPL4). By 2017, the band took their distinctive sound and hit the road to tour across Canada supporting ANNIHILATOR alongside Australia’s MASON in support of their highly praised EP “W.H.A.T.S.T.H.A.T” (Boonsdale Records). Metal Injection also named MUTANK “1 of 8 Hidden Gems in Canadian Metal You Need To Know” (Read here).
After a short hiatus, MUTANK has exploded back on the scene with their new album “Think Before You Think” unleashed this past November. The new album features a rampage of ten thrash happy tracks with fan favourites such as “Running Reds”, “Abortron”, and “Thrash Primordial”. With a passion for classic thrash and a desire to play radical riffs, MUTANK made
“This is Thrash for Metalheads by Metalheads! We have evolved from crossover to a more refined thrash band with longer and more intricate songs, it can be a bit proggy… The level of seriousness in songwriting is evident in the new album. We want this album to energize people and make them feel the way we do when we listen to some of our favourite artists. This album is the most material we have ever put out! 50 minutes of pure metal across 10 tracks. The songs picked themselves as we kept writing tracks we enjoyed playing. Lyrically we cover a lot of ground from the economy to time travel.” adds the band.
Moving into 2025, MUTANK plans to be a tour de force to support “Think Before You Think”. Fans of D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, Havok, Megadeth, Overkill, and Exodus are sure to join them in the circle pit.

“If peppy, energetic thrash in the vein of Slayer, Exodus, Overkill, DRI, Suicidal Tendencies and Anthrax is your bag, then give MUTANK a whirl. They’re certainly full of vim, vigor and energy.” – Decibel Magazine
“Think Before You Think offers enough modern flair to stand apart in today’s metal landscape. Mutank have delivered a thrilling ride that cements their place in the global thrash scene. With Think Before You Think, they aren’t just revisiting the past. They’re shaping the future of the genre.” – Amplify The Noise
“Variety. It might not be an aspect many expect to experience across this album, but that’s Mutank for you, and right up to the end, they find inventive ways to keep the listener engaged. First, by delivering an anthem for all head bangers around the world with the excellently titled Metalheads for Hire. Then by getting even more artistic with Running Reds, a track with some intriguing progressive touches. Before Mutank’s impressive return is capped off with an absolute cacophony of thrashy noise via Thrash Primordial. The record ending as it begun, with heads being banged hard.” – Games, Brrrains & A Head-Banging-Life
“The quartet from Montreal in fact has the ability to make the compositions interesting and unpredictable by expertly mixing thrash assaults with the impetuosity of hardcore, without giving up melodic cues of classic metal extraction and adding the immediacy of punk, permeating songs of that variety capable of intriguing the listener without ever getting bored. “Illuminatus” opens the dance with a sulphurous and threatening start and then settles on a thrashy and rocky mid tempo, all seasoned with unpredictable tempo changes and excellent solos… An album that may not rewrite the history of thrash metal, but which will help the genre evolve while remaining anchored to its origins. Rating: 9/10.” – MetalHead.it

Texas, USA’s metal powerhouse Abolishment of Flesh has just released the intense lyric video for “Words Defy Truth” taken from their latest EP “Resurrecting Misanthropy”, which was released in 2023. The video, now streaming online, offers fans a visceral visual accompaniment to the band’s uncompromising sonic assault that blurs the lines between black, thrash, and death metal. Fund and multi-instrumentalist Ramon Cazares comments on the track:
“‘Words Defy Truth’ was written almost 10 years ago. I’m a big melody and somewhat tech fan, so this has been both challenging and fun to write and perform. This song is about some of the stuff that I saw and experienced when I was involved in church. It seemed like the deeper I got involved, the darker things got. It wasn’t necessarily nefarious but the manipulation, control, fear, and empty hope and promises were enough for me to walk away from religion.”
The track runs four minutes of pure, unadulterated metal aggression, which demonstrates why Abolishment of Flesh continues to push the boundaries of extreme music. With themes rooted in war, violence, disease, corruption, and the systematic collapse of human civilization, Abolishment of Flesh delivers an anti-human message about death and destruction.

Florida, USA’s progressive metal powerhouse The Mourning has just released their captivating new music video for “The Mountain” a visually stunning exploration of tranquility, spiritual connection, and personal transformation from their latest album “Hush” released earlier this year. The band comments on the conception of the track:
“The single was written while overlooking the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, capturing the serene experience of escaping the city’s hustle and bustle. This song reflects how such tranquility can bring a closer connection to one’s inner divine.”
The track starts with a soft, beautiful melody that mirrors the peacefulness of the mountains, gradually evolving into a powerful prog metal anthem. This transition symbolizes the awakening of deeper spiritual consciousness. As the song progresses, intricate instrumental layers and complex rhythms emerge. The soaring vocals deliver emotional intensity, with lyrics infused with themes of nature and spirituality. The climax features catchy cadences and commanding guitar riffs, blending technical prowess with melodic sensibility.
The video was filmed against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains in Blue Ridge, Georgia, and it is a cinematic journey that mirrors the song’s profound musical and lyrical landscape. “The Mountain” is recommended for those who enjoy the grandeur of nature and progressive music, especially bands like Porcupine Tree, Polyphia, and Haken.

“This EP is short and sweet. I think people will dig it! There’s a little bit of something for everyone. We’re not just death metal, we throw in some black metal, melody, thrash, groove, and grind. We’ve been lucky enough to string in some fans who normally don’t listen to underground metal. I think our sound incorporates several aspects of metal and we don’t want to just stick to one formula.” – Ramon Cazares – Abolishment of Flesh

“The song’s (Disavowed) lyrics are eloquent but crushing — a narrative of broken men, hollowed out, filled with prolonged misery, and now “apathetic, hater of life, a mockery and in distress,” entertained only by the suffering of others, begging for death, and “awaiting the cleansing with blood / Adorned with nails and a crown of thorns.” As dark as the words are, the song is equally dark. From the beginning, harsh and heavy slashing chords and chant-like tones cast a grim cloud, backed by head-moving beats, and the searing intervention of the writhing lead guitar feverishly spreads despair. When gritty growls come in, the riffing spasms. When the voice transforms to rabid screams, the music slashes again but blazes in distress. The drums blast; the guitars swarm; the vocals wildly channel agony and rage; and quick jolts segment the violence. The darkness is unrelenting, but the song is also exhilarating, and it should appeal especially to fans of Deicide.” – No Clean Singing

===================================================
Our EP’s artwork represents death, the coming and anticipation and finally, the accomplishment of death.
About The EP:
The lyrics are themed around some pretty dark and aggressive topics. I like the idea of composing music based on those emotions and trying to create an atmosphere. It’s kind of like a soundtrack. Our album “In the Presence of Darkness” had a lot of personal emotion put into that. This release is a continuation of that experience. My family went through some dark times, and I was able to use that as inspiration. For me, music can be therapeutic. It’s like going to a rage room and smashing stuff.
Track By Track:
1. Words Defy Truth – This song is about the lies and manipulation by religious members.
2. Hater of Man – This is about a pregnant person who hates what’s inside them and basically rejects and abuses this being. After being born grows up with this rejection and hate that evolves to be worse than the mother to the point of a murderous hatred for man.
3. Disavowed – In a way, this could be a continuation of “Hater of Man”. It’s about a person that’s grown old and became misanthropic.
===================================================
Fun Facts – Story Angles
1. So our message is definitely anti-human and about death and destruction. We hope people read the message in our songs and can relate or understand its just our opinion and perspective, mixed in with truth and sarcasm.
2. Despite our grim lyrics, when we get together for rehearsal and tour, we’re always joking around and having a good time. Totally the opposite of the theme of the band.
3. Except for our self-titled debut album, the rest of our releases have been recorded at my house. We are definitely a DIY band. Even in our music video for Behind Deceitful Eyes, all the props and imagery you see were created by us. It’s a lot more work to put in but the end result is much more gratifying when it’s all said and done.
4. Going on tour can be a lot of fun but it’s also very stressful. Despite everything that can possibly go wrong, I would never trade that experience for anything else. Most regular adults my age work and save money all year long to take that big vacation. Touring is like my vacation. On tour, you get to see the country, meet new people, and jam on stage with your bros. It’s all I ever wanted to do as a kid. I still have to go back home to a job and be a responsible adult. But on tour, it’s like being a different person and all your troubles and responsibilities are hundreds of miles away.
Live Lineup – Top Left – Ramon Cazares – Guitars, Vocals – Top Right – Izaak Chavez – Guitar

Birthed from the High Plains of West Texas, USA, Abolishment Of Flesh emerged in 2008 as a brutal death metal weapon forged by founding member Ramon Cazares. Not long after their inception they released their debut self-titled album and hit the road on a rampage.
The band’s next release “Decimation” came out in 2012 and was followed by the Brutal Alliance Tour in which they razed venues across the country. On a roll now, AOF once again headlined the now 5-week Brutal Alliance Tour in 2013 and released their devastating second full-length album “Creation to Extinction” at the end of the year.
Refusing to stay in the confines of a single genre, Abolishment Of Flesh looks to death, black, and thrash metal to hone their razor-sharp sonic arsenal. In 2018, they released the pummeling “The Inhumane Condition” and followed it up with “In the Presence of Darkness” in 2021. These destructive full lengths further cemented the band’s name in the local scene.
Their lyrical content is shaped by war, violence, disease, corruption, and the systematic collapse of human civilization. Each track is a brutal autopsy of mankind’s fatal flaws combined with true metal artistry, a relentless commitment to musical creativity, and an uncompromising live performance that transforms every show into a battlefield of sound.

“The band blends mid to uptempo grooves while also introducing space and atmosphere in just the right places. Combining melody, technical/progressive musical elements, and harmony lead vocals, I feel this band caters to both musicians and non-musicians alike.” – Todd La Torre (Queensrÿche)
“The Mourning masterfully marries classic synth sounds, modern Haken-esque rhythms, and massive vocal hooks into a modern progressive package worthy of every fan’s undivided attention.” – Metal Injection
“In a world of clones, The Mourning is a true original and a breath of fresh air.” – Gear Gods
“‘Hush’ is a very pleasant surprise. It displays a lot of compositional variety, and offers a strong throwback to prog metal classics while also keeping a unique sound and mixing in unexpected elements. All band members deliver spectacular performances both from a technical and creative standpoint… it is certainly worth your time, and especially given that it’s a debut, I find it very impressive. 8/10” – The Prog Space
“With the release of “Hush”, the band continue to showcase their mastery to balance technical prowess with broader thematic appeal. The Mourning will most definitely make a big impact on the prog metal scene today and in the future.” – Metal Epidemic
“An impressive first album from a young band with room to grow. Fans of bands like Haken and Distrct 97 will enjoy this album. One to watch.” – Prog Radio
“Hush” a sensory treat that transcends the limits of perception.” – Roadie Metal
“US band The Mourning are out with the album “Hush”, and progressive metal is the style explored on this production. It is a distinctly accessible variety of the form we get with this band, with their take on this tradition more often than not revolving around a little bit of an ebb and flow movement. Usually with more delicate parts alternating with more powerful ones, from distinctly contrasting passages to parts that alternate with more of a subtle difference as to the dominant aspects of each of them. With a range in expression from delicate acoustic or semi-acoustic parts to booming and powerful guitar riff driven excursions. The songs will typically revolve around solid melodies rather than technical instrument details, and for my sake I did find some similarities in sound and execution with the more typical heavy metal bands of the 1980s. In this case with the powerful and melodic lead vocals probably having a lot to say for this association to be formed. An album to seek out if you tend to enjoy the more accessible parts of the progressive metal universe.” – The Progressor

About The Album Artwork:
The artwork for the single “The Mountain” by The Mourning is striking and symbolic, evoking themes of enlightenment, resilience, and a connection to nature. It features a silhouetted figure whose head is exploding into light and fragments, symbolizing an intense spiritual awakening or divine revelation. The glowing light emanating from the head creates a halo effect, emphasizing a sense of transcendence or connection to something greater.
The figure holds a glowing orb near their chest, radiating power and energy, which could represent inner strength or a source of divine guidance. The background is dark and atmospheric, with misty clouds and a suggestion of water or a mountainous terrain, reinforcing the natural and mystical themes of the song.
The band’s logo, featuring intricate, gothic-style lettering, sits prominently on the artwork, giving it a timeless, almost otherworldly feel. Below, the song title “The Mountain” is displayed in bold, elegant lettering, grounding the viewer with the title’s significance. This artwork beautifully captures the essence of the track, blending visual metaphors with the emotional depth of the music.
About The Album:
“Hush” is a powerful journey, both lyrically and musically, showcasing The Mourning’s ability to blend intricate compositions with deeply resonant storytelling. Lyrically, the album explores themes of struggle, resilience, self-discovery, and spirituality. Each song feels like a chapter in a larger narrative, touching on universal emotions while remaining deeply personal and introspective.
Musically, “Hush” combines progressive metal’s complexity with a strong emphasis on melody and emotional depth. The dynamic shifts—from soft, introspective moments to powerful, soaring crescendos—create a rich and immersive listening experience. The dual-vocal dynamic between Johnny Ray and Zai Alyenora adds another layer of emotion and nuance, bringing the lyrics to life in a truly unique way.
The band’s progressive influences shine through in the intricate arrangements and unexpected twists, while the strong melodic foundation ensures that the songs leave a lasting emotional impact. *Hush* is an album designed to inspire reflection, catharsis, and connection, offering a musical journey that resonates long after the final note.
Track By Track:
1. Chaos Machine – “Chaos Machine” is a deep exploration into the lives of individuals who are perpetually engulfed in chaos, showcasing the stark connection between a nihilistic worldview and their ultimate demise. The song paints a vivid picture of how a lack of purpose and meaning can spiral into self-destruction, offering a poignant commentary on human behavior.
Featuring a guest solo from the acclaimed guitarist Charlie Robbins (Syncatto, Artificial Language), known for his virtuosic skill and innovative style, the track combines intense instrumental prowess with compelling lyrical themes. The music is a rich tapestry of contrasting emotions, blending an upbeat tempo with a hauntingly catchy melody and a chorus that lingers in the mind.
“Chaos Machine” is not just a song; it’s a journey through the tumultuous landscapes of the human psyche. Its rhythm and energy pull the listener into a dynamic soundscape, making it both a thrilling and thought-provoking experience. The song’s infectious rhythm and memorable hooks make it a standout piece.
2. The Mountain – “The Mountain” was written while overlooking the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, capturing the serene experience of escaping the city’s hustle and bustle. This song reflects how such tranquility can bring a closer connection to ones inner devine.
“The Mountain” showcases a blend of introspective themes with powerful musical expression, inviting listeners on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening amidst nature’s grandeur.
3. He Cries – The human design is strange: it’s based on psychological archetypes that fit together like a lock and key. This results in a paralyzing standstill where some people constantly radiate their emotional status, while others absorb and reflect these emotions. From this, we conceived the idea of a superperson: someone who could not only take on our emotional distress but also remove it. This concept still leads millions to implore a divine power in the face of suffering, instead of taking action themselves.
With “He Cries,” a melancholic song from the upcoming album “Hush,” we addresses this universal human tendency. This track, features the soulful intro of keyboardist Alex Nasla (ex-Witherfall) and showcases the band’s ability to create a powerful and atmospheric soundscape. Johnny Ray and Eliana Blanchard deliver a performance that turns the world’s cries of despair into an acoustic beauty and harmony reminiscent of prayer chants.
The song advocates that man-made problems should be solved by humans, not by divine intervention. “He Cries” empowers listeners by reminding them of their own power of creation.
4. I Feel The Rain – “I Feel the Rain” is a simple yet profound piece that embodies a delicate melody intertwined with a soft prog groove. This song is about embracing and appreciating all that life has to offer, whether it’s sunny and bright or rainy and somber. It serves as a poignant reminder to feel gratitude in every moment, irrespective of the circumstances.
The inspiration behind “I Feel the Rain” stems from the idea that every experience in life, whether positive or negative, contributes to our overall journey and growth. The gentle melody and subtle prog elements create a soothing and reflective atmosphere, encouraging listeners to pause and appreciate the nuances of their everyday lives.
The lyrics convey a sense of serenity and acceptance, inviting listeners to find beauty and joy even in the most unexpected places. By celebrating both the highs and lows of life, “I Feel the Rain” promotes a mindset of continuous gratitude, reminding us that each moment, no matter how ordinary, holds its own unique value and significance.
Through this song, we aim to inspire a deeper appreciation for the present and foster a sense of contentment that transcends life’s inevitable ups and downs. It’s a heartfelt tribute to the power of gratitude and the simple joys that make life truly meaningful.
5. Hush – “Hush” is a thought-provoking song that delves into the themes of censorship and the enslavement of humanity. The lyrics are meticulously crafted to resemble propaganda, repeating the same commands and lies over and over again. These commands urge people to keep their mouths shut and perpetuate the false notion that nothing can be done to stop those who seek to control speech and thought in the world.
The inspiration for “Hush” stems from the growing concern about the suppression of free speech and the manipulation of public opinion. The song aims to highlight the insidious ways in which those in power can stifle dissent and control the narrative, creating an environment where truth is overshadowed by repeated falsehoods.
Musically, “Hush” is characterized by its ominous and mesmerizing melodies, which create a haunting and confounding atmosphere. The track draws the listener in with its dark, intricate layers and unsettling progressions. The eerie ambiance is further enhanced by Thomas Griggs guest guitar solo, adding a unique and chilling dimension to the song. His solo weaves through the track with an ominous, almost hypnotic quality, amplifying the song’s overall sense of foreboding and tension.
The song serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of censorship and the importance of maintaining the freedom to speak and think independently. It urges listeners to recognize and resist the subtle ways in which control is exerted over their minds and voices. “Hush” is not just a song; it’s a call to awareness and action, encouraging people to question the narratives they are fed and to fight against the forces that seek to silence them.
6. The Wind – “The Wind” is a poetic and evocative song that captures the essence of a timeless and powerful force moving through our lives. With vivid imagery and profound metaphors, the lyrics paint a picture of renewal, guidance, and transformation.
Musically, the song starts with a catchy guitar and drum rhythm, accompanied by a soft, awe-inspiring vocal melody. As the track progresses, it grows into a progressive epic, featuring a memorable chorus that encapsulates the themes introduced in the verses. The climax of the song features a huge and epic pipe organ fugue, masterfully written by John Richardson, which then transitions seamlessly into an intimate and beautiful nylon guitar piece.
“The Wind” blends intricate musical arrangements with thought-provoking lyrics, creating an immersive and uplifting experience that we believe will resonate deeply with listeners. This song invites you to reflect on the unseen forces that shape our lives, carrying a message of hope and inspiration.
7. My Own Way – “My Own Way” is a soft prog rock song that captures the essence of 70s bluesy guitar work, blending it with modern progressive rock elements. The track features intricate guitar riffs and soulful melodies, creating a nostalgic yet refreshing musical experience.
The song delivers a powerful message about self-determination and resilience. It explores the struggle against controlling, narcissistic individuals who attempt to dictate your path in life. Themes of overcoming manipulation, recognizing the need for independence, and not letting nostalgia cloud your judgment are woven throughout the song.
Musically, “My Own Way” starts with a reflective and intimate introduction, gradually building into a compelling progressive rock epic. The vocal melodies are distinctively proggy, adding depth and complexity, while the chorus is irresistibly catchy, staying with you long after the song ends.
With its heartfelt themes and skillful musicality, “My Own Way” resonates with anyone who values their independence and recognizes the importance of going their own way.
8. Cries of The Mind – “Cries of the Mind” is one of our most introspective and emotionally charged songs. It was inspired by the struggles of mental health and the inner turmoil that many people face but often keep hidden. We wanted to create a piece that not only reflects the chaos and confusion within the mind but also offers a sense of solidarity and understanding to those who feel isolated by their experiences.
Musically, the song starts with a haunting melody that builds into a powerful and complex arrangement, mirroring the escalating intensity of inner struggles. The lyrics are designed to resonate deeply with listeners, acknowledging the pain and confusion while also encouraging them to confront and embrace these feelings as a step towards healing.
We hope that “Cries of the Mind” serves as a reminder that they are not alone in their battles. By shedding light on these often-hidden struggles, we aim to foster a sense of community and empathy among our listeners, encouraging open conversations about mental health. Ultimately, we want the song to be a beacon of hope, showing that even in the darkest times, there is a way forward.
9. My Own Hell – “My Own Hell” delves into the concept of hell, not as a physical place, but as a state of mind where people can trap themselves. The song explores how individuals often become their own jailers, locking themselves in a personal hell of despair and crisis, unaware that they hold the key to their own liberation. Deep emotions and negative intrusive thoughts can override logic, making escape seem impossible.
Musically, the track is heavy and dynamic, featuring epic melodies and soaring, belting vocals that convey the intensity of the subject matter. The song journeys through various musical landscapes, reflecting the tumultuous nature of these internal struggles. It culminates in a dramatic electronic drum and bass ending, symbolizing the complex and often twisting path to self-realization and freedom. It’s frantic, claustrophobic, and attempts to bring the listener into the mind of a person’s mental hell.
We hope that “My Own Hell” resonates with listeners who may be facing similar battles, encouraging them to recognize their own power and agency. The message is that while the path out of personal hell is fraught with challenges, it is ultimately within their control. By acknowledging their inner strength and confronting these emotions, they can find the way out and reclaim their lives. This leads beautifully into the final song on the album, “Smooth Seas”
10. Smooth Seas – “Smooth Seas” draws its inspiration from the adage, “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” The song emphasizes that true strength and resilience are developed through navigating life’s storms and rough waters. It’s a reminder that calm times alone don’t build character; it’s the adversities and challenges we face that shape us into who we are.
Musically, “Smooth Seas” begins with a tranquil and reflective introduction, reminiscent of a calm sea at dawn. Gentle, soothing melodies set a contemplative tone, symbolizing the peaceful moments in life before the inevitable storms. As the song progresses, the instrumentation gradually intensifies, incorporating powerful and uplifting elements that mirror the experience of sailing through tumultuous waters. This dynamic shift represents the journey through life’s challenges and the inner strength required to weather them.
Lyrically, “Smooth Seas” explores the themes of resilience and personal growth, using the metaphor of sailing to illustrate life’s journey. The lyrics describe the process of navigating through rough seas and stormy weather, likening it to overcoming personal hardships and adversity. The chorus serves as a powerful reminder that it is through facing and conquering these difficulties that we become stronger and more resilient.
The song features intricate instrumental passages, blending elements of progressive rock with soulful and emotive melodies. The crescendos and swells in the music evoke the feeling of riding the waves and battling the elements, capturing the essence of struggle and triumph. This struggle is especially emphasized in the bridge of the song where the music gets frantic and the drums shift from a typical rock beat to death metal style blast beats. The climax of the song symbolizes the moment of overcoming the storm, followed by a gentle resolution that reflects the calm, clarity, and strength found after adversity.
“Smooth Seas” aims to inspire listeners to embrace their challenges and view them as opportunities for growth, rather than obstacles to be feared. The song is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to persevere and emerge stronger from life’s trials, much like a sailor who becomes more skilled and confident after navigating through rough waters. It encourages listeners to face their personal storms with courage and resilience, knowing that the experience will ultimately lead to personal growth and a deeper sense of self.

Fun Facts – Story Angles
1. A Band Built on Resilience
The Mourning was born out of Johnny Ray’s personal journey through struggles like anxiety, PTSD, and depression. The band’s music is not just art; it’s a form of therapy and a message of hope to anyone dealing with life’s challenges. Their latest album Hush is a testament to the healing power of music.
2. A Last-Minute Hero Saves the Album
Three days before recording Hush, the band discovered that their guitarist hadn’t learned the material. Taking a bold risk, they flew in Francesco Pinter from Italy, a friend of Johnny’s who they barely knew at the time. Francesco not only learned the parts but recorded the entire album in five weeks and later joined the band permanently.
3. Dual Vocal Dynamics Like No Other
The Mourning’s live performances stand out with the unique interplay between Johnny Ray’s commanding vocals and Zai Alyenora’s emotive delivery. This dual-vocal approach creates a richness and emotional depth that fans consistently praise as one of the band’s defining features.
4. Rooted in Spirituality and Complexity
The Mourning’s lyrics often draw from Johnny Ray’s deep interest in both Orthodox and Esoteric Christianity, blending philosophical and spiritual themes with introspection. This makes their music not just an auditory experience but a spiritual one, inviting fans to explore deeper questions about life and existence.
5. A Global Connection, Local Roots
While based in Florida, The Mourning has a global presence with members like Francesco Pinter residing in the Dolomite Mountains of Italy. This blend of international influence and local camaraderie gives their music a unique flavor, blending cultures and styles seamlessly.

We are The Mourning, a progressive metal/rock band formed in 2017, driven by a shared need to express the complex ideas we’ve been developing over the years. From the start, our goal has been to create music that blends intricate structures with deep, emotive storytelling. It all began when Johnny Ray and Jason Berlin joined forces, crafting a sound that explores the struggles of life and the challenges of the modern world.
Our debut EP, “Theosis,” was an experimental project centered around keyboard-driven compositions. As we’ve grown, our sound has naturally evolved to highlight guitars, a transition that’s powerfully showcased in our latest album, “Hush.” This album features the exceptional guitar work of Berklee alumnus Francesco Pinter and includes stunning guest solos from notable musicians like Charlie Robbins of Syncatto and Artificial Language, Thomas Griggs of Intervals, Jeff Pogan, formerly of Suicidal Tendencies, and Trey Xavier of Gear Gods. Alex Nasla served as both producer and keyboardist on “Hush,” bringing his signature synth and orchestral touch, ensuring the album’s sound is both dynamic and cohesive.
“Hush” dives into themes like censorship, personal struggles, and the search for freedom, blending progressive rock, jazz metal, and other eclectic influences. Our current lineup includes Johnny Ray, Zai Alyenora, Alex Nasla, Jason Berlin, and Francesco Pinter.
We’re gearing up to support “Hush” on the road, bringing our powerful and dynamic live performances to fans. We’re always writing new material, pushing the boundaries of our sound, and aiming to connect deeply with our audience. Committed to exploring life’s complexities through our music, we’re ready to embark on the next chapter of our journey.

“guitar virtuoso Jon Harris offers a welcome throwback on ‘Togetherness’, the second single to be released from his forthcoming LP ‘Parallel Heart’. An instrumental number, its mid tempo and groove oriented base is immediately reminiscent of works by Joe Satriani, but unlike so many fretboard freaks, Harris clearly values a great melody instead of a pure shred. Here, he lays down a semi bluesy tone over a solid rock groove, before branching out to inject a funk derived rhythm with a cleaner tone, and bell like melodies. The arrangement eventually finds room for a few slightly fuzzy sounding harmonics and a melody that could be one of Satch’s best, circa ‘The Extremist’.” – Real Gone Rocks
“It’s Friday! And we have the pleasure of adding the new single “Togetherness” from six-string slinger Jon Harris. An instrumental driving rock track with an accessible melody and plenty of layered soloing to keep you engaged throughout, “Togetherness” is a rewarding five minutes without those pesky vocals! Taken from his forthcoming album “Parallel Heart” set for a December release, catch Jon Harris on your Home for the Best New Rock…W-J-O-EEEE!”
“His artistic ability blends technical brilliance and emotional depth, creating immersive soundscapes that push the boundaries of rock.” – Video Sound Art Magazine

This fourth full-length “Tempora Mutantur” follows 2023’s “The Illusionist” and features a fresh lineup with the addition of guitarists Carlos Alvarez and Connor McCray (Vis Mystica) along with keyboardist Anthony Stahl plus album guests Wayne Ingram (Wildrun), Joe Gullace (Thank You Scientist) and Sam Vallen (Caligula’s Horse).
A collaboration of musical minds, and with anything LUNAR does; “Tempora Mutantur” is an emotional thematic listening experience with ups and downs musically and lyrically dealing with the passing of time and the effects it has on us physically and mentally.
“This album deals with something everyone can relate to and no one can escape: the passing of time. We get older, our perspective changes, and we gain some things, and lose others… sometimes the things and ones we love. And we struggle and fight along the way. This album deals with some of the highs and lows we deal with along this journey we all share. Hopefully, the fans will be able to resonate with it and find some solace and aid in their own experiences of time passing. I believe the songwriting has gotten stronger over the years. I think the songs are a bit more well-structured. But I think the overall sound of the band has remained pretty consistent over the years. The music is very “prog,” so it’s been diverse I think from day 1. Probably even more so now than it was at first.” adds Bosson.
Recommended for fans of Opeth, Caligula’s Horse, Haken, Tool, and Porcupine Tree, LUNAR’s “Tempora Mutantur” is due out January 31, 2025, from Saibot Reigns Records.

“It’s really well done technically by a band that clearly cares about their music and can play.” – Rock The Joint Mag (The Illusionist 2023)
“If I had one word to describe this album, it would be this one: whirlwind… “The Illusionist” is an album that is living. From its jazzy highs to its heavy metal lows, this album is constantly on its toes, never repeating itself and never, ever growing complacent. A wonderful whirlwind indeed. 9/10” – Ever Metal
“I feel like Lunar has captured the balance between accessibility and technicality very well. I hear many of the same elements in their sound that, when employed well, make bands like Dream Theater, King Crimson, Voïvod and even Sigh so engaging. I love when an album comes out of nowhere (for me, anyway) and makes this much of an impression.” – The Metal Crypt
“As I said at the start, when I heard this album I was immediately grabbed by it. The story works nicely, it is very character based and features plenty of emotions which as a listener I certainly could relate to. The music is terrific with all the players putting in excellent performances and the instrumentation used in a clever way to match all that is going on with the lead character. There are moments of heavy prog as well as metal, but melody runs through the heart of it. The fact that some of the people in the band have never met or even been in the same room together is remarkable as it sounds like everyone was on the same hymn sheet and it doesn’t sound pieced together. That is a great credit to the writing, arranging as well as all the musicians doing their parts to the benefit of the whole piece. An absolutely delightful as well as enjoyable album.” – CGCM Rock Radio
“The concept is that there are songs that are angry, songs that are confused, songs that are depressed, and everywhere in between. Styles on the album run the gambit from Progressive Metal with melodic vocals, to moments of Jazz, to cookie monster Thrash…. The musicianship is solid on all of the parts, with some excellent performances, notably vocalist Chandler Mogel… it does warrant checking out for Prog-Metal fans that like a mix of growler and melodic vocals.” – Metal Express Radio
“The Illusionist again is at the highest level of the progsphere, Bosson’s continuation of the Lunar name, honouring his co-founder and friend, through the medium of progressive metal, is an advantageous endeavour. 9/10” – Musipedia of Metal
