0 Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life – Album Review: Hellnite – Midnight Terrors (Sliptrick Records)

  • February 11, 2019
  • by Asher
  • · Hellnite

Hellnite do it right and it’s so damn good. Midnight Terrors is a thrilling listen. An old-school thrash record. Nine tracks of hard-hitting metal with a bucket-load of head-banging riffs, evil sounding vocals and crunchy drum beats. From the circle pit mayhem of Phantom Force to the galloping rhythm of Spirits Prevail and the super hot guitar work of Beasts from the Deep, the first half of the album is banger after banger.

Glasgow’s ATLAS : EMPIRE Announce Canadian Tour Dates April 2018

Glasgow’s ATLAS : EMPIRE released their debut album “The Stratosphere Beneath Our Feet” this past December. Weaving their way between the multitudes of different genres that influence them, the trio visits the worlds of heavy progressive rock and expansive ambient shoegaze. Crossing the Atlantic to North America, the proggers will be visiting Canada for their third time since their performances in Ontario in 2017, which included showcasing at Indie Week in Toronto.

Bassist Robert Hasebe comments:

“We are unbelievably excited to cross the Atlantic for our third tour of Canada. This is an important tour for us as we will be touring our brand new album ‘The Stratosphere Beneath Our Feet’. We worked really hard on this record and are elated to share live versions of these songs with our Canadian fans. Touring here is by far one of the most enjoyable things about Atlas : Empire. The unique challenges and rewards of touring this part of the world are what makes Canadian artists and performers truly great. They are not only so wonderful to work with but also so friendly and exceptional at their craft. Canada produces so many good bands and such talented musicians that we are so fortunate and so grateful to be able to tour here regularly. Also, poutine.”

Bassist Robert Hasebe adds:

“‘The Stratosphere Beneath Our Feet’ is a concept album that explores what would happen to humanity if we became entirely reliant on technology/automation in every aspect of our lives – and more importantly, what happens when that system fails? Across its 10 tracks, we delve into different aspects of that very-possible future, with each song takes place before, during or after a mass technological collapse, from the perspective of a different ‘character’.”

“A lesson in progressive rock” – Rocksound (UK)

“fiery, soaring, and thought-provoking heavy prog-/post-rock” – Rebel Noise

“Atlas : Empire has produced an album that is glued with beautiful instrumental and chill vibes for a weekend unwind. Overall the album is definitely worth a listen if you are a fan of early Incubus, early Thrice, or Minus the Bear.” – Boston Rock Radio

“The band show an impressive versatility throughout the record as they straddle various genres with ease. Post-hardcore sits neatly alongside the Maybeshewill inspired post-rock…” – abadgeoffriendship.com

“They hit you with a wall of sound, that has a slightly Math feel to it. The tracks have a lot of overlapping phrases, but with darker tones to the guitars, it almost feels like Deftones and Arcane Roots had a lovechild and raised it in ‘Bonnie’. Both vocalists lighten the mood and play upon a subtle gaelic charm in between tracks…There’s just the right level of melody combined with guitar-wrecking aggression for them to stand out in the Glasgow scene.”

The guitarist Didier Samson is already called “Master” in his profession of criminal lawyer, but it is under the title of “masters of the metal” that he and his three acolytes of the death metal band The Flaying aspire with their second album Angry, Undead which appears March 22 on the emerging label PRC Music.”

“The Flaying, hailing from Quebec City, churn out some of the sickest death metal jams you can find. Their album, Angry, Undead was released on PRC Music this past March and it’s a total ripper.” – Metal Injection

“True to the band’s name, the music of The Flaying will slash the skin from your face in paroxysms of blood-spraying savagery. But it does more than that. It will also suck the air from your lungs, boil the brain, and hammer your bones into fragments fine enough to blow away in the wind.” – No Clean Singing

“Angry, Undead is quite a number, I am really digging these addictive and mesmerizing death metal tunes and I am quite sure most of you technical and progressive death metal fans out there will feel the same about this album once you have checked this out. The Flaying is definitely a band to keep an eye and an ear on!” – Lords of Metal

“Solid and thoroughly enjoyable, The Flaying make a name for themselves on their second album.Angry, Undead is never at a loss for momentum and rage, and still manages to tickle your ears with its massive grooves and musical prowess.” Dead Rhetoric

“It is a savage, brutish and barbaric death metal album emphasized by the nasty groove of Elegy of Emptiness and the booming Angry, Unleashed. A fine addition to any death metal fan’s collection.” – Games, Brrrains & A Head-Banging Life

“They’re straight up death metal with no rules or gimmicks.  They’re super groovy, great vocals you can understand, and dirty riffs with lots of tremolo mixed in for good measure.” – Technical Music Review

“I don’t know what’s with Quebec and great quality Technical Death Metal but we have another winner on our hands…. I needed to catch my breath because it was some pretty relentless blast beast and technical wizardry. I was glad to have a bit of a break before their unleashed some more crushing songs… they really hit a home run with this album and I wish them unrivaled success in the coming future.” – Metal-Temple

– Thorium Mag

SHORT BIO

And it all began with the rope dancer….

Formed in July 2010, The Flaying is a death metal band based in Quebec City, Canada that focuses on fluid melodic construction of songs featuring brutal sections which are further complemented by vocals with both low end growls and hateful high pitches.

Since their first release Unhope (2014), Seb, Did, Wil and Mike are forging ahead in order to adopt a more brutal approach: adding new grooves, a greater velocity, and creating a wider ambiance as well as keeping breakdowns and progressive parts with counterpoints constructing a main theme of anger and a general hate of humanity.

Soldiering on with the philosophy of one band, four individuals, four personalities to collide, the writing process is a team effort initially seeing the band collaborate on riffs and groove ideas, adding a flourish of low-end colors, and blending the whole thing together with flying vocals that create a manifest of pure mayhem. This product of this steadfast diablerie will be realized on March 22, 2019 when the second album “Angry, Undead” is unleashed on PRC Music.

LONG BIO

And it all began with the rope dancer….

Formed in July 2010, The Flaying is a death metal band based in Quebec City, Canada that focuses on fluid melodic construction of songs featuring brutal sections which are further complemented by vocals with both low end growls and hateful high pitches.

“The Flaying represents the process of removing the skin of one another while he is alive; feeling and watching in a state where he is immobilized with restraints and before curious persons who have gathered for the ceremony. It’s a metaphor to life’s scorching effect on human beings in their state of hopelessness. It’s a great means of torture, a brutal treatment, a total disrespect of human integrity.”

A testament to the perseverance of tired musicians that got through a huge process of genesis, the first full-length album Unhope was recorded at Hemisphere Studio with Antoine Baril in 2014 and cemented the exotic playing that the band was looking for. In 2016, the band decided to continue as a  4-piece with Seb, Did, Wil and Mike forging ahead in order to adopt a more brutal approach: adding new grooves, a greater velocity, and creating a wider ambiance as well as keeping breakdowns and progressive parts with counterpoints constructing a main theme of anger and a general hate of humanity.

Soldiering on with the philosophy of one band, four individuals, four personalities to collide, the writing process is a team effort initially seeing Did (guitars) working a lot with Mike (drums) on riffs and groove ideas, after which a global song structure is formed and thus begins the creative work with the whole band. Seb (bass) comes in and adds his low-end colors, blending the whole thing together. Finally, Wil (vocals) then works on his parts and flies above the song to create a manifest of pure mayhem. This product of this steadfast diablerie will be realized on March 22, 2019 when the second album “Angry, Undead” is unleashed on PRC Music.

Hailing from the ashes of Charlotte, USA’s darker side comes forth the blackened death trio, Oculum Dei. Mixing different elements and influences of black metal, the band is set to bring forth a horde of darkness and engage listeners into a realm of deep, chaotic experiences.

Hellbent to unleash their demonic war chants from their debut full length “Dreams of Desire and Torment” on February 22, 2019, the band is sharing their latest music video “Involuntary Pandemic”. The track is an intense brutal force, a violent asking about where God is when bad shit happens and why one should be a believer, especially when a child is being harmed or murdered.

Bassist/ drummer Tenebris adds:

“Involuntary Pandemic is almost a straight death metal blast to the face with Zebs well place rant on religion, the hypocrisy of the church and asking where are your Gods when bad stuff happens.”

Watch “Involuntary Pandemic” at https://youtu.be/9GxsK-7viEg

The band adds:

“The album as a whole is an eclectic mix of slow dark black metal jumping into extreme black riffs sometimes slowed down with a death metal riff and into acoustic guitars. There is no set template for this one, just a groove and feel that each of us has brought to the table.”

First forming as a studio project in 2016 by Tenebris (bass/drum and keys programming), Camalus (guitar) and Zebulv (vocals/guitar), Oculum Dei has taken their influences of Emperor, Behemoth and Dark Funeral and push an eclectic unholy blasphemy as far as it will go in the Southern USA’s Bible Belt.

Not content to remain as a studio project, the trio has begun performing locally and have shared the stage with Carach Angren, Wolfheart, and Mors Principum Est. Clad in corpse paint with an elaborate and continuously evolving stage show, Oculum Dei has heavily invested into their extreme visionary madness.

Download and stream of singles “Blinded By Gods” and “Dreams of Desire and Torment” available on Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon.
