BIO: It’s the question all bands get asked at some point, and the question they most hate/fear: How would you describe your sound?
However, for Ontario, Canada’s Bolero, the answer says it all: Symphonic Celtic Death Metal.
Formed in 2005 by singer/bassist Morgan Rider as a black metal side project, Bolero’s present line-up and direction became focused and solidified in 2007. Having recently unleashed their debut album, Voyage From Vinland, the epic metal warriors behind Bolero are now gaining real momentum and converting listeners and critics across the globe into believers and preachers of symphonic Celtic death metal.
Having spent a year and a half recording at Attlesey Studios (Hallows Die, Will of the Ancients, Panzerfaust), the 11-track debut is a culmination of the band’s song writing and hard work from the past several years. Making the album a reality was an exercise in perfect construction, as Rider says, “each track was built from the ground up; from the heavy bottoms to the swirling orchestral parts. Kind of like a puzzle in a 100-track sort of way.”
Drawing influence from an array of genres and styles ranging from folk to death metal, and everything in between, it’s no wonder Voyage From Vinland simultaneously features formidably epic orchestrations, ear-piercing guitar riffs, throat-crushing speed and triumphant melodies.

NERD FEST – Vancouver – Nov 19 – Medieval Fantasy Comes Alive w/ Scythia, Eye of Odin, Celestial Ruin
Nerd Fest Returns for its 2nd year of showcasing that the world of knights and dragons is more than fantasy, it’s the new cool!
Nerd Fest, a night of medieval fantasy returns to Vancouver on November 19th at the Rickshaw Theatre with local folk metal clans Scythia, Eye Of Odin and Celestial Ruin. Scythia will be headlining the fest as they have just released their second studio album “…Of Exile” last month to rave reviews and have topped the Canadian college loud charts at #1.
Fantasy metal won’t be the only entertainment at Nerd Fest; the festival also incorporates everything from sword fighting, tattoo artistry, burlesque dancing (Tiffany Truth), fantasy multimedia (films), a costume contest and a multitude of vendors whom will be present to showcase their unique local-made crafts for medieval enthusiasts.
Dave Khan vocalist/guitarist of Scythia and one of the event organizers of Nerd Fest commented on what fantasy fans can expect.
“Nerd Fest is a night dedicated to celebrating our love for all things fantasy. And we will celebrate by making it sexy with burlesque and cool with some really prominent local fantasy bands. We are really stoked to be putting on a multimedia variety night with a theme. It’s been a blast organizing it because it’s been really easy to garner support. The idea seems like something that really resonates with the sponsors and performers that we are recruiting.”

About Scythia: Formed in the latter half of 2008, Scythia is a five piece band that combines haunting folk melodies (emphasized by keyboards and oboe) with the driving force of modern progressive metal to form a raw and powerful sound that is their own. Scythia is not your older brother’s metal band. Unless that band had an oboe of death, echoes of thunder, and a knack for writing folk metal tunes.
So what is Scythia?
Taking its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with a painting of Nordic/Russian warriors riding bears while brandishing swords, Scythia not only “gives the painting musical significance,” but it is also “the name of an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia. The melodies used in our music have a very ancient, sometimes medieval sound, so I wanted to attribute them to an ancient civilization,” says Khan.
In 2010, Scythia released its debut, “…Of War” (originally with violin) which was produced by Shaun Thingvold who has engineered on projects with SYL, Fear Factory, Darkest Hour and many more. Now, following some line-up changes, Scythia will be releasing its second album “…Of Exile”, again produced by Shaun Thingvold September 23, 2011.
