Toronto, ON heavy metal trio BLACK ABSINTHE are surfacing from the basement to unleash new tunes from their debut album ‘Early Signs of Denial’produced by Dave Baksh (Cross Dog, The Mahones) plus mixed and mastered by Frank Gryner (Rob Zombie- Hillbilly Deluxe). Set for release on May 13th, 2016, the album is the band’s first professional recording to follow their three self recorded EPs Live At Coalition (2014), Noise Complaint (2014) and Augusta (2012).
In support of the release, BLACK ABSINTHE will be performing in Oshawa on May 13th at The Atria and Toronto May 14th at Coalition TO for their local CD launch event. Both dates will also be supported by their Montreal brothers in arms, thrashers and Wacken Metal Battle Canada 2014 champions MUTANK.
BLACK ABSINTHE’s powerful heavy riffs and bass lines are reminiscent of classic thrash and new wave British heavy metal with a range of progressive to classic rock influence ready to be shared with fans new and old alike. The band recently teamed up with MetalNationRadio.com to premiere their first single ‘The Wild’.

Formed in 2011 by vocalist and guitarist Jack Cerre, bassist Kyle Scarlett and drummer Austin Henderson, the trio continue to rip through the underground Toronto metal scene without pause.
Compounding heavy riffs and bass lines reminiscent of classic thrash and new wave British heavy metal with a range of progressive to classic rock influence, Black Absinthe presents a solid example of a Canadian metal band. They’re road hungry, influenced plus supported by other driven Canadian musicians and most of all, ready to innovate and grow the traditions of a genre they venerate and respect. As leaders in the scene, Black Absinthe were headlining Toronto semi-finalists in the Wacken Metal Battle Canada 2015.
With a new year ahead, Black Absinthe pushes on with their desire to provide their fans in Canada and online with a cleaner and heavier presentation of their sound. The years incubating in Toronto’s metal underground have served the band well. From their 2012 debut EP Augusta to their 2014 EP Noise Complaint, both releases have established the band’s sound as well as their stage presence, leading to their driven heavy metal machine. Now in 2016, Black Absinthe are ready to release their debut studio album Early Signs Of Denial (May 13, 2016). The album was produced by Dave Baksh (Cross Dog, The Mahones) out of the Gentleman’s Den studio in Pickering, ON who’s experience proved to be the final touch; aiding in refining drum dynamics, smoothing the transitions and layering harmonic guitar lines. Black Absinthe’s Early Signs Of Denial sound is a leading example of the contemporary Canadian metal scene serving to showcase how the band sounds in a crisp, powerful, and ultimately more professional recording environment.

Through the bands expanding network cultivated through Coalition Music’s “Artist Entrepreneur Program”, they chose Frank Gryner (Rob Zombie- Hillbilly Deluxe) to mix and master the album in the Winter of 2015. His strong ability to work with a diversity of sounds was the appeal to the band. His mixing took the album into the sonic spheres of a classic 80’s sound providing, grandeur, psychedelia, and an arena rock feel that could properly represent the textures put down in tracking. There was an immediate trust formed with the stylistic choices Gryner made throughout mixing.

WACKEN METAL BATTLE CANADA is proud to announce the BC Final on May 1st at Red Room in Vancouver, BC for this year’s 2016 national competition to send one independent metal talent to the world stage at Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany, which holds an attendance of over 80,000 metalheads from around the world. After three battle rounds in Vancouver during the month of March, the following bands listed below will be performing for one to move on to perform at the National Final in Toronto on June 11th for ‘One Band To Rule Them All’ and play at Wacken Open Air 2016.
This is WMBC’s fourth year hosting the competition across country in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. For the last three years that Wacken Metal Battle has been held in Canada, it has produced two world champions Vesperia (2015) and Crimson Shadows (2013) to triumph at the international Wacken Metal Battle beating out over 30 other representing countries from around the globe.

Wacken Metal Battle Canada is part of an international competition where over a hundred band’s from across the country battle each other for one to be selected and join over 30 other countries for an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air, which has been taking place in Wacken , Germany for the last 26 years. Oshawa’s Vesperia (2014 winners – video at Wacken), Toronto’s Crimson Shadows (2013 winners – video at Wacken) and Montreal’s Mutank (2014 winners – video at Wacken) have had that honour playing in front of thousands. The 2016 festival will be taking place from August 4-6.
How it works:
Each city will hold their qualifying rounds plus city finals from the months of January to May 2016 selecting the top band to move forward to the national finals in Toronto, ON on June 11th at Opera House with one being selected to perform at the 27th edition of Wacken Open Air taking place from August 4-6. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry.
The finalists will be selected as follows by province.

Van Halst has hit it out of the park with World Of Make Believe. The music is top notch, the lyrics cover such a broad range with astounding results. I listened to this first in the car but if you really want to appreciate this album play it in the dark with a set of headphones on so you can close your eyes and just let it take you away. Cory is an active live sound engineer throughout the city, predominantly working in the metal/rock club scene. He works as a recording engineer in tandem with Ryan Berehulke out of his own studio, as well as a freelancer. A few of Cory’s past live sound engineering highlights include the Farmageddon Open Air festival and a guitar clinic with Steve Vai. He has also captured the attention of many, with his impressive array of multi-instrumental skill-sets, notably in his band Sleeping In Traffic.

With over a decade of experience in both the live and studio realms, Tyson Travnik is best known for his work with bands stemming from heavier genres. Also the festival manager and creator of the highly regarded Farmageddon Open Air heavy metal festival, and Shredmonton Metal Festival and Conference, Tyson has at some point been behind a behind the scenes for many metal bands in western Canda. Having played in various bands throughout his musical career, his most recent playing is noted with speed metal band, Ironstorm.

After over 15 years as a musician, vocalist, songwriter and engineer, James Seabrook has toured with the likes of Trooper, World Champion Elvis tribute Robin Kelly, & Wide Mouth Mason. In the studio he’s worked with over 100 artists including international gospel recording artist Nancy Unsworth, Canadian touring artist Laura Bachynski, and international best selling author Troy Payne and band Aside From Sorrow. James is also a published and award winning Lyricist (2008 – Gunslinger’s Lament), and songwriter, currently co-writing with singer Jessica Lana McLean.

Nate is also currently the Prairie Representative for Wacken Metal Battle Canada. With over 10 years of experience of professional writing experience, Lacey contributed to such esteemed horror publications as Fangoria, GoreZone, and Diabolique magazines. Cara Ashbey is an Alberta-based aggressive music publicist who has been performing, booking, and promoting concerts since she was 16. Tylor Dory is best known as the guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist/lyricist/producer for the Tylor Dory Trio, guitarist for Death Toll Rising, Wroth, and the former guitarist for Villainizer. Nino is a Finnish songwriter, guitarist, audio engineer and one of Finland’s most sought after metal/hard rock producers. Nino is the owner and founder of Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki: a state-of-the-art professional recording studio founded back in 2000. His work is credited on countless records, many of which have certificated gold and platinum. He has worked with artists such as Wintersun, Amorphis, Ensiferum, Lordi, Lost Society, Firewind and Sonata Arctica just to name a few. He rose to fame as the guitarist for his own power metal band Thunderstone, and later as the producer and songwriter for the wildly successful children’s heavy metal act Hevisaurus. Ryan Semchuck (“Loud As Hell” Festival Manager, Recording Engineer, Promoter, Live Sound Technician)
Ryan is known well throughout the Drumheller area for his participation in many events, retail endeavors and mixing duties. Out of high school, he played in a few local classic rock cover bands, and taught guitar lessons at the local music store. In 2009 Ryan joined the FM radio station in Drumheller, earning an assortment of titles from radio personality to station manager. This allowed him the time during weekends to run his own production company. Ryan is Geoff Bourrie’s counterpart in the established “Loud As Hell” heavy metal festival, which is now going on its 5th year. Rod “Rod Rookers” Gillis (Owner/Operator @ Dv8)
A founding member of the Kroovy Rookers in Red Deer in 2004, by 2006 I was setting up and promoting shows in the Red Deer area. Having moved to Edmonton in 2009, Rod start promoting shows exclusively at DV8 Tavern on 99th Street. In 2013, DV8 moved to a new location on Gateway Blvd and Whyte Avenue. The venue is still in operation, and is popular with bands and crowds representing underground music genres, ranging from Punk Rock, Metal, Hip Hop and Rockabilly.

Tim Waterson is a Canadian drummer who holds the world record for the fastest number of double strokes on a bass drum, with a record of 1,407 in one minute (January 22nd, 2002).His Record for Single stroke is 1057. Tim is one of the most dedicated drummers when it comes to advancing and pushing the boundaries of our feet. It is mindboggling to imagine even some of the creative possibilities of drumset application from learning the foot techniques presented in his video.
