3rd ANNUAL BLANKFEST VANCOUVER ‘It’s About The Homeless, Nothing More, Nothing Less’

Blankfest Vancouver III - web

Blankfest Vancouver is proud to announce its third annual clothing / fund raising event on November 8th at the Railway Club in support of the city’s homeless with proceeds going to aid the Covenant House, the non-profit shelter that helps the cities street youth from age 16-24 who have fled physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, along with those who have been forced from their homes or those who have aged out of foster care. Over the last three years, the music charity event has created awareness and collected nearly $2,000 and over 250 blankets / winter clothing items for Vancouver’s homeless.

SIN Agency and Blankfest-Vancouver organizer Leanne Harrison comments:

“This is our third year working with Covenant House Vancouver and we are very proud to be an advocate of their initiatives and programs. Vancouver has come out in full force in the past 2 years so we are really hoping for the same this year.”

Covenant House, founded in 1997 is a non-profit organization that offers a clear exit from life on the street to youth aged 16 – 24. They make this possible through a carefully designed Continuum of Care including a daily drop-in, a 54 bed crisis shelter, transitional housing, relapse prevention and life-skills training.

“Blank-Fest provides significant support to the homeless youth Covenant House serves. We’re looking forward to the third Vancouver Blank-Fest; the generosity of the Blank-Fest team, participating bands and patrons helps Covenant change the lives of over 1,400 young people a year”. – Mark Savard, Development Officer – Community Giving (Covenant House Vancouver)

If you would like to help please call (604) 638-GIFT (4438) or visit http://www.covenanthousebc.org.

This year’s event will see local Vancouver bands and artists come together performing to raise awareness, funds and clothing for the city’s homeless.

As the event slogan goes, ‘It’s About The Homeless, Nothing More, Nothing Less.’.

Blankfest Vancouver is just one of many events across North America inspired by founder Kenn Rowell, who has been organizing Blankfest in New York City since 1997 and has encouraged others to hold Blankfests in various parts of the USA, Canada (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary) and Europe to help the homeless with the support from their music communities. Blank-Fest is an annual benefit concert, usually held one-to-two weeks before Christmas, which raises blankets for the homeless. It was founded in 1997 in Nyack, NY (a suburb approximately 20 miles outside of New York City) by Kenn Rowell who is the frontman for the NYC-based band, The Baghdaddios.

Rowell, in previous interviews detailed how he had always wanted to do “something charitable” on Christmas Eve. Among the many things he considered were keeping the disabled father of an old neighborhood friend company, singing in the children’s ward of a hospital and collecting blankets from friends to dispense amongst New York City’s homeless on Christmas Eve. Doing just that, for the first time in 1996, he enjoyed the experience so much that he decided to do the same thing again, next year. It was at that time that his friends told him that they had no more blankets to donate saying that Rowell had “cleaned them out” from the previous year.

Upon further reflection Rowell arrived at the idea of holding a benefit concert where people attending could contribute one blanket of any condition in lieu of a cover charge for admission to the show. These donations were intended to be delivered by Rowell and several volunteers, directly, to the City’s homeless on Christmas Eve. The first Blank-Fest was held at a local club in Nyack called Mai Place and netted 40 blankets. The next year saw 70 blankets donated at the same club, since renamed The Loft. After that local entrepreneur Chuck Debruyn convinced Rowell to move the show up the road to Bruxelles a bar-restaurant that he had recently bought into. Debruyn reasoned that there would be more room for parking, plus a guaranteed walk-in crowd. The show has been held at this establishment ever since.

Since inception, over 15 years ago, Rowell estimates that Blank-Fest has collected over 10,000 total donations for the homeless. For the original flagship show out of Nyack, with the exception of one year (2001) donations in every year has increased. Much of this growth can be attributed to increased exposure through local radio, the internet and the press, including featured articles in the New York Daily News and mentions in the New York Post.[1] In addition there have been satellite shows that have been formed in other states, cities and countries. So numerous have donations been in recent years that volunteers have had to split the distribution/delivery of blankets to the less fortunate on multiple nights, starting on Christmas Eve. Often excess donations are distributed to homeless shelters as well.

MCed by Rowell’s long-time band, The Baghdaddios, the first Blank-Fest only featured a handful of local, Hudson Valley area-based groups including international touring act Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan, The Wheel and future Bruxelles part-owner Debruyn who performed as a solo artist. While always priding itself on featuring local independent, or “homegrown” music acts, in addition the benefit has attracted likewise talented songwriters and bands which boast an impressive list of major recording label ties and a solid reputation for touring and recording including EMI artist Patti Rothberg, pedal steel guitar great Buddy Cage, former Misfits guitarist and founder of The Undead, Bobby Steele, Soulfly lead guitarist Marc Rizzo, Sirius Radio personality Meg Griffin, international jazz composer Mike McGinnis and the founder of the Anti-folk school of music, Lach.

Efforts to duplicate the successes of the early Nyack shows proved elusive at best until New Jersey-based independent artist activist, Richard Kubicz read about Blank-Fest’s efforts in the Daily News and proposed a “sister show” at a local club in Garwood, NJ. The first Blank-Fest-NJ, promoted extensively through Kubicz’s D.I.Y. music website Let’s Rock America [1] was a resounding success, netting 200 blankets which were donated directly to a neighboring homeless shelter in Cranford and garnered notice in the Bergen County press in 2006. Last year’s second annual Jersey show produced similar results. Similarly, Blank-Fest UK [2] was founded in Nottingham, England after a local recording studio owner heard an interview with The Baghdaddios on the British Armed Forces Radio Network, BFBS Radio One during the group’s Summer 2007 tour of England. Upon hearing about both the American and UK efforts Ontario-based photographer Gaynor Fletcher approached Rowell regarding the formation of a Blank-Fest Canada show. Also, debuting in 2007, in Guelph, ON, the inaugural Canadian event featured popular Canadian folk artist James Gordon and was covered extensively by the Canadian media,[2] raising well over 100 blankets.

In addition to these shows former Baghdaddios bassist, John Sidoti joined forces with local internet radio personality Ron Purtee to develop the first-ever Blank-Fest Wisconsin, also in 2007, in the Milwaukee-area suburb of Racine.

Currently, there are 8 Blank-Fest shows serving 7 major metropolitan areas in three countries. In addition to those mentioned previously, 2008 has seen the addition of three additional shows: Blank-Fest Florida, which is hosted in Northern Florida (Lake City, near Gainesville, FL) and Blank-Fest VA, which is hosted in Richmond, VA.

In addition, promoters in Bridgeport, CT as well as Calgary and Ottawa, Canada have begun work for premiere Blank-Fest shows in December 2009. The first Blank-Fest Quebec (which was also the first “post-Holiday Season” Blank-Fest show), which took place on Saturday evening, February 21, 2009, garnered approximately 503 total donations.

Currently plans are in development to expand Blank-Fest even further. There has been talk of shows in Texas, Northeast Pennsylvania, Ohio and Atlanta, GA. Several additional popular artists have been approached regarding future such shows. Quoted in a newspaper interview in 2000, Rowell maintained that “as long as there is the issue of homelessness we will continue to have a Blank-Fest”, further adding that he wishes “we didn’t have to hold these shows” but that, until the situation dramatically improves, everyone involved understands that they really have no other choice.

Vancouver, BC prog metallers QUARTERED whom are hitting the road in October with Nanaimo, BC’s The Body Politic for tour dates in Alberta and British Columbia (dates listed below) are proud to officially release their new album ‘Eyes And Ears’, out today, October 7th. Co-produced with Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound, Quartered has marked their return to the spotlight to follow up 2010’s ‘Walk Like A Ghost’ that was produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against) and took the band on multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines). Focusing on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics, the band has kept one major goal in mind: longevity. Now the band is ready to unleash their third record, ‘Eyes and Ears’.

“After 4 years we are proud to return with our most dynamic and versatile album to date.  We titled it ‘Eyes and Ears’, because we consciously wanted to make an effort to write songs that not only to inspire the ears but create a visual component as well, which is a depth that is not always showcased enough in heavy music today.” comments bassist Craig Rudder.

About:

Thanks to a group of high school friends fusing their influences into one cohesive sound and the flip of a coin to help choose between band names, Vancouver progressive metal band Quartered’s moniker has certainly given itself meaning over the years.

Inspired by bands like Deftones, Tool and Thrice from early on – Quartered’s focus has always been on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics that tell a story while keeping one major goal in mind: longevity.

Following multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines) and two full-length albums, The Falls of Autumn and Walks Like a Ghost, produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against), Quartered is ready to unleash its third record, Eyes and Ears, on October 7th that was produced by them and Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound.

Heavily influenced by “memories and how senses play a big part in connecting and helping us remember parts of our lives,” the title Eyes and Ears was chosen because “you can’t un-see the things you’ve witnessed and hearing is such a powerful way to trigger memories,” explains vocalist Greggor Williams.

““Blink Blink Flash”, as an intro, shows the trademark vocals from Greggor Williams, deviating from screams to melody in a matter of seconds. All the while, clanging and heavily distorted guitars crash around. I have to say, Quartered reminded of a hybrid of Glassjaw and Every Time I Die – that aint a bad thing!!” – All About The Rock

“Quartered, hailing from Canada’s vibrant Vancouver, erupts from the molten core, rhythmically pulverizing melodies emphasise an exquisite range of vocal emotion proven on their album Eyes And Ears, so go see and hear Quartered perform live at a venue near you today!” – CHUO 89.1 FM – Metal Canvas

“I just love how the music is rich of nuances and rhythmic riffs. Not to mention the superb production.

Highlights : “Blink blink flash”, “She sees colour”, “Take me there tonight”.” – Palace of Rock

“”Eyes And Ears” a strong album. It comes along riddled with alternative as well as core and death metal elements and satisfies with its progressive orientation.” Metal Only

“Their intense brand of progressive metal is what’s lacking in music today, the real deal….Quartered is, hands down, one a a very few select bands in this country that will go somewhere.” – Danger, 99.3FM The Fox (Vancouver, BC)

“Their live show has the energy of Alexisonfire, while their music reminds me of early Deftones. They are definitely one of Vancouver’s top 5 heavy bands.” – Christian Aldred, Rednyne Productions (Vancouver, BC)

“…put them on stage – as in their upcoming CD release performance at Vancouver’s media club – and they’ll win new converts with their sheer impassioned intensity alone.” – Peach Arch News (Surrey, BC)

“Quartered has an amazing history and accomplishments. On tour constantly and having tracks on Rockband are only a couple of great things this band has done… Great refined sound of a modern hard rock band. Elements of prog rock mixed in with metal to create a blend tastes which just flow into ones ears. Catchy hooks and sick riffs rekindled my love for Quartered as they blew away the crowd. Using boxes crafted to house lights to shoot up at them as they played they looked and sounded amazing. I could see Quartered rock a small venue, a theatre or even an arena and you would still get such an intimate feeling with such a personable band. ” – Hammer Records (Live Review)

“The perfect blend of brutality, melody and catchy hooks made for the perfect metal storm. Self described as progressive, Quartered never let the energy fall below maximum during their entire set. Through the constant tempo changes, occasional time signature madness and swift vocal style change ups they were proving that hype means nothing when all you’ve got is talent and the ability of writing a great and memorable metal song. So many bands, even seasoned veterans, lack stage presence but Quartered could write a how-to book on the subject. Engaging and attention grabbing, these guys know how to put on a show. Its not very often you see a band live, hearing them for the first time, and there is not a single thing to complain about. There is just something so intriguing with their hybrid sound of “Alive or Just Breathing” era Killswitch Engage and the progressive flair of Tool. With the peaks and valleys woven into their sound it keeps all eyes on stage at all times and all ears forever open, and that is something the night had been missing.” – Metal Underground (Live Review)

“Somewhere along the inspiration of other Canadian screamos Alexisonfire, see for yourself by listening to their newest single “Casa”” – Vancouver Music Review.

““Screamo modern metal with a complexed progressive edge is what I call this style of music from Vancouver based hard hitters Quartered.” – Fireworks Magazine

‘Walks Like A Ghost’ is an album packed with the perfect mix of heaviness and melody, creating songs that contain elements of progressive metal, post-rock, metalcore, and in some short instances; alternative doom.” – Metal Underground

“They are not only one of the most talented bands I have had the honour of working with but are flexible, easy to deal with and I have never received anything other than the best reviews from venues that have hosted them with multiple requests to have them return again.”- Leanne Harrison, Sin Agency

Vancouver, BC prog metallers QUARTERED has teamed up with Idobi Howl for the premiere of their latest single ‘She Sees Colour’ from their upcoming album ‘Eyes And Ears’ due out on October 7th.

“She Sees Color is one of my personal favorites on this album. Before ever actually writing the album or going in to the studio to record it, I spent some time with someone personal who has synesthesia, the ability to hear/ see color when they listen to music. You know it was just one of those crazy moments when every word, and every action means something to you, that creates that still frame in your head that I will never forget, but you haven’t noticed yet. So in the end it lead me to wanting to recreate those colors again.” comments vocalist Greg Williams.

Now the band is ready to unleash their third record, ‘Eyes and Ears’ they co-produced with Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound and mark their return to the spotlight to follow up 2010’s ‘Walk Like A Ghost’ that was produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against) and took the band on multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines).

In additional news, Quartered will be performing at this year’s third annual Rain City Throwdown presented by Denyss McKnight of Crowsnest Productions and Cariboo Brewing at the Rickshaw Theatre on Sept 27th in Vancouver, BC alongside bands Take The Earth Beneath Us, The Body Politic, Wolfborne, Drop The Hate. Full details can be found here.

“Rain City Throwdown was an event born out of support for the local metal scene.  With a lack of mediums for bands to gain exposure, this was a no-brainer. An event for us by us.  One night of the year where we showcase Vancouver talent.  This event has given the local heavier acts a chance to perform together for one night, on one stage, for the fans. See you at the front, bring them dancing shoes.” comments vocalist Greg Williams

Show Dates:

Sept 27 – Vancouver, BC – Rickshaw Theatre (Rain City Throwdown)

“I just love how the music is rich of nuances and rhythmic riffs. Not to mention the superb production. Highlights : “Blink blink flash”, “She sees colour”, “Take me there tonight”.” – Palace of Rock

“Screamo modern metal with a complexed progressive edge is what I call this style of music from Vancouver based hard hitters Quartered.” – Fireworks Magazine

Revenge of The Nerds! Vancouver’s Fourth Annual NERDFEST November 8th @ Rickshaw Theatre

‘A Night of Epic Fantasy’

NERDFEST 2014 V2

Come One! Come All! For a night of EPIC fantasy! with your swords, your knights in shining armor, and your beer maidens as Aesir Promotions presents Vancouver, BC’s fourth annual NerdFest at Rickshaw Theatre on November 8th. Headlined by Whithorse, YT’s The Whiskeydicks, a group of Celtic Gypsy party rockers who have spent the better part of a decade carving a reputation for themselves as “One Hell of a Good Time” using fiery fiddle licks, cello played like a bass, bombastic trumpet, vivacious drum beats, energetic guitar strumming, and voice to tell stories of good times past. The Whiskeydicks play songs people know but in a way they’d never imagine. Their formula works and has earned the band acclaim from audiences everywhere. Nerdfest will also be their CD release show for their new self-titled and fourth studio recording.

“If Gogol Bordello and the Corb Lund Band got drunk, hooked up and then nine months later popped out a little whippersnapper, that baby would probably be the Whiskeydicks. That is to say this BC-by-way-of-Whitehorse band combine various elements of Celtic, country, rock and Gypsy music and filter them through punk sensibilities and a rowdy disposition.” – Exclaim! Magazine

In addition to the headliners, the night includes a variety of entertainment with Diamond Minx (Vancouver’s Blonde Bombshell of Burlesque), live music from the Hyperacoustic Prog-Rock band Runaway Four (formerly Tasty Animals), sword fighting demonstrated by Academie Duello (video), magic, roaming medieval actors, a costume contest plus vendors of all types selling their goods and services that will bring out the nerd in all of us. This is an event not to be missed!

Nerdfest organizer Morgan Zentner comments:

“NerdFest is gearing up for it’s fourth year in Vancouver, BC this November 8th. Over the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of acts, vendors and performers with each year gaining more momentum than the last. With the help of a great group of volunteers, the Rickshaw Theatre staff and our generous sponsors, NerdFest IV will be the biggest event yet! This year we will have veteran performers The Whiskeydicks, Runaway Four (formerly Tasty Animals) and Academie Duello and we will be adding to the roster Diamond Minx, Mr YoYoThrower and more acts will be announced soon.  Of course we will have the ever popular costume contest so we encourage everyone to grab your favorite costume and join in the fun.”

TBP-July-2014-Promos-3344

Nanaimo, BC six-piece powerhouse The Body Politic are proud to unleash their new EP ‘Egressor’ out officially today, Tuesday, September 16th to follow up their 2011 debut album ‘All Too Human’.  Taking their name from a Clive Barkershort story and shifting gears from jazz (which most of the members studied at Vancouver Island University) to progressive metal, the band combine poly-metric grooves, aggressive screams and soaring vocal melodies to push the boundaries of modern metal music with technically impressive musicianship. Their emotionally charged songs incorporate an element of playfulness that has lead THE BODY POLITIC to stand out in a vast metal crowd and to perform opening slots for Tesseract, Protest The Hero and Scale The Summit plus multiple Western Canadian tours with their evolution.

“This is it. This is the culmination of two years worth of hard work and passion. Today is the day we unveil Egressor to the world, and we’ve never been more proud of anything. We couldn’t be more excited.” comments drummer Spencer Bowman.

“The Body Politic share a similar desire to take their art in new directions. Opening track “Vitam Agere” is the perfect intro to the EP, short ,modern and original, and something that would work well in film soundtrack. Second track “Armature” shows the band to be technically adroit but not at the expense of song-writing. “All Hands” mixes precision with power, while “Swing For The Fences” shows The Body Politic are very much making music for the 21st century. “Colqhoun” has a raw power to match its melodies. Finishing with the fine “Irradiate,” it’s clear that The Body Politic are a band with the potential to cross over to a wide audience indeed.” – Hellbound

“Watch these prog-metal masters as they rip through “Armature,” a song off of the band’s forthcoming self-released EP, Egressor… If you’re into the likes of Periphery and Protest The Hero, this song will most certainly get your blood flowing. And in all the right directions, you dig?” – Gunshy Assassin

“The Body Politic combines staccato rhythms with catchy vocal melodies and blends them in a killer progressive metal package. “Egressor” their new six song EP is a short but extensive slice of modern metal…The production on “Egressor” is top notch and the musicianship…there is no denying that “Egressor” is a great album…Go get your grubby little hands on The Body Politic’s Egressor” – Extreme Metal Television

“The feverish energy and charisma that floats through your speakers while you listen to Egressor will leave you enlightened with a sense of purpose and motivation.”- Damnation Mag

“Wow! Yes, this is what I said, when I started listening to The Body Politic, as their latest ep “Egressor” comes at you like a locomotive engine, yet puts you at ease with their melodic vocals and melodic guitars.” – Explicitly Intense

“technical brilliance. This is an EP of six cuts that slash twenty minutes long that brings together all the ingredients for modern and advanced metal.” – Noizz Webzine

“Hold on to your balls, for Expain could be positioned as Canada’s next great metal export. Evidently going by their ferociously captivating debut album ‘Just The Tip’, the quintet slap together a masochistic mixture of blazing riffs, supersonic drumming, sexy solo’s and vocals so brutal it would make your last hangover as weak as Justin Bieber banging one out. Come on they mix jazz elements, that surely has to receive numerous acknowledgements, but also through the various sounds and lyric topics employed, this album is a party on it’s own” – Global Metal Apocalypse

“…the material on the album is certainly some of the most unique and entertaining music that I have encountered in a while…every single element, and every single moment on Just the Tip contains something unique for the listener to discover, and like the name of the album suggests, every subsequent listen to the album makes one realise that one has merely discovered just the tip of the iceberg with the whole host of things going on.” – Heavy Metal Tribune

“…this group takes various elements of their influences – which includes punk, jazz, classical, world, pop, and even country – and melds them into some serious stunning thrash metal.” – Pure Grain Audio

“For some parts it reminds me of the instrumental genius of latter Annihilator/Jeff Waters’ material…” – Brutalism

“a band built on displaying technical skills behind the instruments. A heavy and potent mixture of thrash and jazz metal, Vancouver, Canada’s Expain is hoping to become a staple in a genre built on technical skill and speed” – Under The Gun Review

“a perfect blend of the technical and melodic, combining together to create a sound that is incredibly unique and forthright. I have listened to the album several times now, and each time I find myself enjoying some new dimension to the sound, or some new aspect of the music. It just keeps getting better.” – Vancouver Metal

“In my metal induced coma, I am inclined to say this band should not be sniffed at or trifled with, they are some serious thrash metal impresarios… For Fans Of: Uber thrash with a touch of jazz.” – All About The Rock

“Wildly diverse band that combines elements of thrash, punk, tech metal and even some jazz with an off-the-wall comedic streak.” Prog NW Metal Zone

“It’s one of the finest independently released albums I’ve ever heard in my life. From the short intro track ‘Bacchus’ all the way to the perfect closer in ‘Eating A Beating Heart,’ there’s so many quality thrashers on the disc. ‘The King’ is a personal favorite of mine as the musicianship is ridiculously tight. ‘Aggressions Progressions’ has an absolutely beautiful dueling solo section and ‘Manatee’ has a sick bass solo. Overall it’s 11 tracks of pure thrash mayhem” – Broken Neck Radio

“The band comes racing out of the gate with three dementedly heavy fist-pumpers….a promising metal act that is well worth a listen.” – Discorder (E.P.E.P Review)

“a strong mixture of early Thrash and Crossover Thrash concepts, blending them with a Melodic Death Metal sound, and plenty of energetic aggression.” – Apochs Metal Review (E.P.E.P Review)

“Don’t leave your children alone with The Almighty Excruciating Pain” – Metal Sucks (E.P.E.P Review)
