Vancouver, BC prog metallers QUARTERED has teamed up with Blank TV for the premiere of their new lyric video ‘Violent Love’ in support of their upcoming album ‘Eyes And Ears’ due out on October 7th.
Lyric Video – Violent Love – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrLhkoTkLH0
Quartered’s focus has always been on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics that tell a story while keeping one major goal in mind: longevity. Now the band is ready to unleash their third record, ‘Eyes and Ears’ they co-produced with Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound and mark their return to the spotlight to follow up 2010’s ‘Walk Like A Ghost’ that was produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against) and took the band on multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines).

In additional news, Quartered will be performing at this year’s third annual Rain City Throwdown presented by Denyss McKnight of Crowsnest Productions and Cariboo Brewing at the Rickshaw Theatre on Sept 27th in Vancouver, BC alongside bands Take The Earth Beneath Us, The Body Politic, Wolfborne, Drop The Hate. Full details can be found here.
“Rain City Throwdown was an event born out of support for the local metal scene. With a lack of mediums for bands to gain exposure, this was a no-brainer. An event for us by us. One night of the year where we showcase Vancouver talent. This event has given the local heavier acts a chance to perform together for one night, on one stage, for the fans. See you at the front, bring them dancing shoes.” comments vocalist Greg Williams
Show Dates:
Sept 27 – Vancouver, BC – Rickshaw Theatre (Rain City Throwdown)
About:
Thanks to a group of high school friends fusing their influences into one cohesive sound and the flip of a coin to help choose between band names, Vancouver progressive metal band Quartered’s moniker has certainly given itself meaning over the years.
Inspired by bands like Deftones, Tool and Thrice from early on – Quartered’s focus has always been on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics that tell a story while keeping one major goal in mind: longevity.
Following multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines) and two full-length albums, The Falls of Autumn and Walks Like a Ghost, produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against), Quartered is ready to unleash its third record, Eyes and Ears, on October 7th that was produced by them and Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound.
Heavily influenced by “memories and how senses play a big part in connecting and helping us remember parts of our lives,” the title Eyes and Ears was chosen because “you can’t un-see the things you’ve witnessed and hearing is such a powerful way to trigger memories,” explains vocalist Greggor Williams.

“Their intense brand of progressive metal is what’s lacking in music today, the real deal….Quartered is, hands down, one a a very few select bands in this country that will go somewhere.” – Danger, 99.3FM The Fox (Vancouver, BC)
“Their live show has the energy of Alexisonfire, while their music reminds me of early Deftones. They are definitely one of Vancouver’s top 5 heavy bands.” – Christian Aldred, Rednyne Productions (Vancouver, BC)
“…put them on stage – as in their upcoming CD release performance at Vancouver’s media club – and they’ll win new converts with their sheer impassioned intensity alone.” – Peach Arch News (Surrey, BC)
“Quartered has an amazing history and accomplishments. On tour constantly and having tracks on Rockband are only a couple of great things this band has done… Great refined sound of a modern hard rock band. Elements of prog rock mixed in with metal to create a blend tastes which just flow into ones ears. Catchy hooks and sick riffs rekindled my love for Quartered as they blew away the crowd. Using boxes crafted to house lights to shoot up at them as they played they looked and sounded amazing. I could see Quartered rock a small venue, a theatre or even an arena and you would still get such an intimate feeling with such a personable band. ” – Hammer Records (Live Review)
“The perfect blend of brutality, melody and catchy hooks made for the perfect metal storm. Self described as progressive, Quartered never let the energy fall below maximum during their entire set. Through the constant tempo changes, occasional time signature madness and swift vocal style change ups they were proving that hype means nothing when all you’ve got is talent and the ability of writing a great and memorable metal song. So many bands, even seasoned veterans, lack stage presence but Quartered could write a how-to book on the subject. Engaging and attention grabbing, these guys know how to put on a show. Its not very often you see a band live, hearing them for the first time, and there is not a single thing to complain about. There is just something so intriguing with their hybrid sound of “Alive or Just Breathing” era Killswitch Engage and the progressive flair of Tool. With the peaks and valleys woven into their sound it keeps all eyes on stage at all times and all ears forever open, and that is something the night had been missing.” – Metal Underground (Live Review)
“Somewhere along the inspiration of other Canadian screamos Alexisonfire, see for yourself by listening to their newest single “Casa”” – Vancouver Music Review.
“Screamo modern metal with a complexed progressive edge is what I call this style of music from Vancouver based hard hitters Quartered.” – Fireworks Magazine
‘Walks Like A Ghost’ is an album packed with the perfect mix of heaviness and melody, creating songs that contain elements of progressive metal, post-rock, metalcore, and in some short instances; alternative doom.” – Metal Underground
“They are not only one of the most talented bands I have had the honour of working with but are flexible, easy to deal with and I have never received anything other than the best reviews from venues that have hosted them with multiple requests to have them return again.”- Leanne Harrison, Sin Agency

Calgary, AB’s progressive power metal quartet VIATHYN has teamed up withMetal’Rules.com for the exclusive song premiere of their new track ‘Ageless Stranger’ off their upcoming album ‘Cynosure’ due out on October 7th.
“We chose Ageless Stranger to be the opening track on our new album Cynosure because it is high energy and hard hitting. With a big chorus, relentless rhythms, and some fun shredding, we feel it is the appropriate introduction to the remaining hour of diverse musical moments you will hear on Cynosure. The lyrics are inspired by the malevolent Stephen King character Randall Flagg, who has appeared in multiple works by King such as The Stand, The Eyes of the Dragon, and The Dark Tower.” comments guitarist Jacob Wright.

Produced by VIATHYN‘s Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered by Sacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills), ‘Cynosure’ features nine epic assaulting tracks with intense guitar shredding and infectious chants that blend prog thrash, melo-death and power metal influences. With VIATHYN‘s 2010 ‘The Peregrine Way’ debut album praised for its innovative song-writing and fresh comparison to today’s power metal, it was only a matter of time for guitarist Jacob Wright to launch into song-writing mode and compose a majority of the material that would be recorded for this second full-length. Even through hindrances such as studio closings, computer crashes, losing a jam space, and a flood, VIATHYN was able to record their second album between August 2012 and February 2014. With the addition of 7-string guitars, some growl vocals, and an evolving influence, Cynosure’s songs are faster, more technical, and heavier, while maintaining a constant melodic and progressive presence.
Viathyn was formed in 2006 in Calgary, Alberta when brothers Tomislav and Dave Crnkovic (on guitar and drums respectively) joined forces with lead guitarist Jacob Wright. Having come from various influences such as Thrash, Melo-Death, and Power metal, they wrote a handful of early demo tracks to settle on an overall sound for the group. In 2008, they recorded the Demagogue EP in order to attract a permanent vocalist and bassist. Alex Kot joined on bass in 2009, and brought with him a unique playing style by using an 8-string NS stick. Tomislav took up vocal duties, and the line-up was complete. VIATHYN started playing live shows and has supported bands such as Stratovarius, Manegarm, Incantation, Rotten Sound, Into Eternity, and Skeletonwitch.
Quick Fact on band name: Playing off the word ‘Leviathan’, the guys settled on ‘Viathyn’, which has no actual definition in the English language, but when referring to the band can be taken to mean ‘progressive, melodic, grandiose, innovative and emotional’.

GearGods.net Premiere DISPARAGER Drum Playthrough For ‘Pictures’; New EP Out ‘Timeless, Ageless’

Brooklyn, NY’s DISPARAGER has teamed up with GeardGods.net for the premiere of their new drum playthrough for their track ‘Pictures’ off their latest EP‘Timeless, Ageless’ produced by Jay Maas (Defeater, Bane, H2O, American Nightmare, Polar Bear Club).
Vocalist/ guitarist Chris AhKao comments:
“Pictures is fun for us to play. It’s in 5/4 throughout, there’s 4/4 over 5/4 and 6/8 over 5/4 simultaneous polyrhythm stuff going on, and some metric modulation too. Peter is one of the best drummers I’ve ever played with. He’s pretty out there and challenges us as musicians.”

Formed just last year, DISPARAGER has always had the crazy notion that music is art and that art is never a means to an end but an end in itself. As an extension of frontman Chris AhKao regaining his life from personal demons, this debut EP is a testament to that. Bursting with dense rawness and precision while pushing the boundaries of metal with tracks like “At Least I Still Have Bon Iver” – half folk song, half crushing mix of Isis and Slayer – and “Pictures” – a time signature mindfuck the band is proud NOT to call prog rock. The music is meant to showcase a refusal to settle, to compromise, to live any other life than that inspired by unwavering intent, self-expression and integrity.

“Disparager are from Brooklyn, New York and play metal or hardcore, or post-rock, or whatever you want to call it. Above all else though, Disparager are fucking badass. ” – Pure Grain Audio
“Passion and sincerity are what matters most in music, and Disparager have an overabundance of those. Opening with “Pictures,” the band show themselves as technically adroit but never at the expense of the actual song. “Tuesday Love” is raw in its emotion; this is an antidote to the fake music that clogs up the airwaves like fat in an old man’s arteries. “Gratitude” reminds me of Cave In with its juxtaposition of darkness and light. My favourite track on the EP is the heartfelt “R.I.P Bill Hicks” (Bill Hicks was a genius and the world is a poorer place for his passing— look up some of his work for proof). Finishing with the epic “At Least I Still Have Bob Iver,” Disparager show themselves as a band with passion, a strong identity, and a reason to be. Not many bands can say that.” – Hellbound

About:
There’s something to be said about technology and its ability to bring musicians together and Vancouver’s Expain has Craigslist to thanks for its birth.
Mixing thrash with jazzier elements and everything in between, the band delivers music that’s energetic, diverse and thoughtful in every sense of the word. “Our music tends to be very melodic and we put a big emphasis on the songwriting, as well as the individual riffs,” says guitarist Eric Morrison.
The band’s debut album, ‘Just the Tip’, plays to its sense of humour, but also represents the beginning of a musical journey that’s not bound to stop or slow down any time soon. Writing about everything from overcoming adversity to partying hard, living in an ever-changing city and the state of today’s society as a whole, Expain has captured its true identity on record.
As Morrison explains, “We go through many different concepts on this album but I think throughout all of it there is an attempt to stay hopeful and make something positive out of difficult or unpleasant situations.”

“Hold on to your balls, for Expain could be positioned as Canada’s next great metal export. Evidently going by their ferociously captivating debut album ‘Just The Tip’, the quintet slap together a masochistic mixture of blazing riffs, supersonic drumming, sexy solo’s and vocals so brutal it would make your last hangover as weak as Justin Bieber banging one out. Come on they mix jazz elements, that surely has to receive numerous acknowledgements, but also through the various sounds and lyric topics employed, this album is a party on it’s own” – Global Metal Apocalypse
“a band built on displaying technical skills behind the instruments. A heavy and potent mixture of thrash and jazz metal, Vancouver, Canada’s Expain is hoping to become a staple in a genre built on technical skill and speed” – Under The Gun Review
“a perfect blend of the technical and melodic, combining together to create a sound that is incredibly unique and forthright. I have listened to the album several times now, and each time I find myself enjoying some new dimension to the sound, or some new aspect of the music. It just keeps getting better.” – Vancouver Metal
“In my metal induced coma, I am inclined to say this band should not be sniffed at or trifled with, they are some serious thrash metal impresarios… For Fans Of: Uber thrash with a touch of jazz.” – All About The Rock
“Wildly diverse band that combines elements of thrash, punk, tech metal and even some jazz with an off-the-wall comedic streak.” Prog NW Metal Zone
“It’s one of the finest independently released albums I’ve ever heard in my life. From the short intro track ‘Bacchus’ all the way to the perfect closer in ‘Eating A Beating Heart,’ there’s so many quality thrashers on the disc. ‘The King’ is a personal favorite of mine as the musicianship is ridiculously tight. ‘Aggressions Progressions’ has an absolutely beautiful dueling solo section and ‘Manatee’ has a sick bass solo. Overall it’s 11 tracks of pure thrash mayhem” – Broken Neck Radio
“The band comes racing out of the gate with three dementedly heavy fist-pumpers….a promising metal act that is well worth a listen.” – Discorder (E.P.E.P Review)
“a strong mixture of early Thrash and Crossover Thrash concepts, blending them with a Melodic Death Metal sound, and plenty of energetic aggression.” – Apochs Metal Review (E.P.E.P Review)
