Wacken Metal Battle Canada Announce Edmonton Round IV Winner; Edmonton Semi-Final Line Up Complete; One Band To Rule Them All!
Wacken Metal Battle Canada is proud to announce Death Toll Rising winner of Edmonton’s fourth qualifying round that took place on Wednesday, April 23rd at Pawn Shop Live (10551 82 Ave NW.). The band will move on to compete at the city final on Wed, May 7 @ Pawn Shop Live (10551 82 Ave NW.) alongside winners from the previous three qualifying rounds. Two bands from the Edmonton city final will move to the Alberta final on Friday, May 23 at Dicken’s Pub (1000 9 Ave SW.) where the bands will face off against two bands from Calgary’s city final for one to win a spot at the national final in Toronto, ON on June 7th at Opera House (735 Queen St. E.). One independent Canadian metal band will be chosen to perform at the international Wacken Metal Battle during Wacken Open Air 2014 taking place from July 31- Aug 2.

About: Over 100 independent Canadian metal bands have been selected to participate in this year’s Wacken Metal Battle Canada line up in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The bands will compete during the months of March, April and May in 22 qualifying rounds, 6 semi-finals, and an Alberta final along with the national final being held on June 7th in Toronto, ON at Opera House.
One band will be chosen to represent the nation with highest honour at this year’s 2014 international battle at the world’s most prestigious metal festival Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany.
The finals will have the following representation and will be judged along with all other rounds by a panel of music industry representatives.
1 finalist from Vancouver, BC
1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off in Alberta final)
2 finalists from Toronto, ON
1 finalist from Montreal, QC
Last year’s battle was witnessed to Toronto, ON’s epic power/death metal band Crimson Shadows not only winning the 2013 Canadian final but conquering the international final and performing in front of thousands unknown to their behemoth sound. (Video of that champion set can be viewed here.) The band joined a list of Canadian heavyweights such as Voivod, Exciter, Razor, Annihilator, Anvil, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, 3 Inches of Bloods, Despised Icon and Danko Jones who have performed at the festival in years past.
Submissions were open from December 5, 2013 to January 31, 2014.

On the road for their ‘CANADA SLAYS TOUR’ in promotion of their latest release ‘Tales’, heavy metal brewers TRIBUNE have posted a new tour blog from their experience in Grande Prairie, AB and Edmonton, AB at the following link below. The tour kicked off in Kelowna, BC on April 3rd and has the band trekking as far East as Montreal, QC (April 19) to return West for the wrap up the tour in Nanaimo, BC on May 3rd.
This is Tribune‘s second cross Canada Tour since 2012, when they toured across the US and Canada in support of their previous release ‘Elder Lore/ The Dark Arts’.
Their concept album ‘Tales’ was released October 2013 via their indie label Corpse Corrosion Music and was inspired entirely by literature featuring a wide array of influences from Homer to Mary Shelley to H.P. Lovecraft, to more extreme musical influences such as Carcass, Death and At The Gates. The band’s appetite for more melodic and more brutally heavy sounds to follow-up 2011’s Elder Lore/The Dark Arts is demonstrated with their collusion of extremity and accessibility that bleeds into the melting pot and their fresh take of progressive death metal.

Toronto, ON based guitar aficionado and pedagogue Jeff Gunn is proud to announce he will be traveling across Canada for Hidden Sounds/Hidden Self workshops presented by Mayfair Music Publications and Long & McQuade to highlight key musical ideas from his book Hidden Sounds: Discover Your Own Method On Guitar Series. Gunn will be examining 10 life lessons learned through musical study and performance along with sharing personal stories from his own musical journey as a guitarist, arranger, songwriter, columnist, author, and professor that has taken him to all seven continents performing at stadiums and festivals with the likes of Emmanuel Jal (author of the bestseller War Child), Swizz Beatz, DMC, Jenna Andrews, Kae Sun, Serena Ryder, Arrested Development, Kate Todd while opening for Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, Janelle Monae, Feist, Karl Wolf, and K’naan.

The interactive 2hr workshop allows audience participation through rhythmic and guitar exercises. Pedagogue Jeff Gunn will teach you to effectively use positioning, tambora, artificial harmonics, percussion and silence to enhance your guitar skills. About Jeff Gunn:
As a Toronto-based freelance guitarist who has performed and taught music in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia, Jeff Gunn has performed at venues and festivals such as The World Bank, Capitol Hill, Canadian Music Week, Festival d’été de Québec, Toronto Center for the Arts, Pop Montreal and was recently featured on TED Talks and the TV Series “Guitar Picks” narrated by Kim Mitchell. He has toured and arranged with US artist Dwayne Britton (LML Music) who was honoured with ‘Top Ten Vocal Albums of 2008’ by Talkin’ Broadway. Their arrangement of Annie Lennox’s “Why” received much critical acclaim in the NY Daily News and in the UK by The Stage. Jeff contributed guitars to Morgan Sadler’s “Go On”, the winner of ‘Best Song 2009-2010’ at The Toronto Independent Music Awards, and he is featured on Emmanuel Jal’s single “Lose to Win” from his album See Me Mama (2012). A real humanitarian, he co-founded the Canadian Alliance Against Modern Slavery, which mission is to liberate contemporary slaves and combat slavery.
Receiving his BFA and BED in Music Education at York University, Canada, Gunn has published over 60 articles in Canada, the US, UK and in Thailand, in fields as diverse as music, travel, fashion and history. He was most recently published in Canadian Musician, holds a “guitar tips” column with The Guitar Magazine in Thailand, served as a “guitar tips” and “music travel” columnist with Muzik Etc (2008-2011), and has contributed to Thai Classic Guitar Magazine, Fashion Studio 7, YYZ Living, Verge Magazine and The Journal of World History (University of Hawaii Press).
Years of practice, experimentation and implementation has led Jeff to share his vision with guitar lovers of all ages and levels of performance by putting his knowledge on paper and through masterclasses.

Wacken Metal Battle Canada Announce Edmonton Round Three Winner; One Band To Rule Them All!
Wacken Metal Battle Canada is proud to announce Eye of Horus as winner of Edmonton Round Three. The band will join Quietus and Samandriel at the city semi-final on Wed, May 7 @ Pawn Shop Live (10551 82 Ave NW.) where two bands will move on to compete at the provincial final for Alberta taking place in Calgary on Fri, May 23 @ Dicken’s Pub, (1000 9 Ave SW.). One band from the battle for Alberta will move on to compete at the national final in Toronto, ON on June 7th at Opera House (735 Queen St. E.) where one independent Canadian metal band will be selected to perform at Wacken Open Air 2014 for the international Wacken Metal Battle.

About: Over 100 independent Canadian metal bands have been selected to participate in this year’s Wacken Metal Battle Canada line up in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The bands will compete during the months of March, April and May in 22 qualifying rounds, 6 semi-finals, and an Alberta final along with the national final being held on June 7th in Toronto, ON at Opera House.
One band will be chosen to represent the nation with highest honour at this year’s 2014 international battle at the world’s most prestigious metal festival Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany.
The finals will have the following representation and will be judged along with all other rounds by a panel of music industry representatives.
1 finalist from Vancouver, BC
1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off in Alberta final)
2 finalists from Toronto, ON
1 finalist from Montreal, QC
Last year’s battle was witnessed to Toronto, ON’s epic power/death metal band Crimson Shadows not only winning the 2013 Canadian final but conquering the international final and performing in front of thousands unknown to their behemoth sound. (Video of that champion set can be viewed here.) The band joined a list of Canadian heavyweights such as Voivod, Exciter, Razor, Annihilator, Anvil, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, 3 Inches of Bloods, Despised Icon and Danko Jones who have performed at the festival in years past.
Submissions were open from December 5, 2013 to January 31, 2014.
