WACKEN METAL BATTLE CANADA is proud to announce MUTANK (Montreal) WMBC 2014 champion. After hundreds of submissions and over 100 bands selected to compete in battles across the country, five bands remained representing their cities on Saturday, June 7 at Opera House (735 Queen St E.) for the WMBC National Final. Neck of The Woods from Vancouver, Exit Strategy from Calgary, Mutank from Montreal plus My Hollow and Burning The Day from Toronto all took the stage to a packed crowd at Opera House where they were judged by a panel of music industry that included Robb Reiner (Anvil), Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment), Lindsay Schoolcraft (Cradle Of Filth), Jon Asher (Asher Media Relations), Adam Sewell (Riot, Rock Management / Stereo Dynamite), Darrell Shelley (Scene Magazine), Tim Henderson (BW&BK), Drew Copland (Villainizer).
“Saturday night was an incredible display of talent from across the country. Each band proved that they deserved to be on that stage. With great pride we will send off thrash metal powerhouse and new champions Mutank to Wacken.” comments WMBC organizer JJ Tartaglia.
MUTANK will now move on to perform at the international Wacken Metal Battle in Germany, which saw last year’s Canadian winners Crimson Shadows become the 2013 WMB international champions. MUTANK‘s performance date is set for July 30th at 2pm on the WET Stage, a day before the 25th annual Wacken Open Air officially kicks off during July 31 – Aug 2.

About: Over 100 independent Canadian metal bands were selected to participate in this year’s Wacken Metal Battle Canada line up in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The bands competed during the months of March, April and May in 22 qualifying rounds, 6 semi-finals, and an Alberta final along with the national final to be held on June 7th in Toronto, ON at Opera House.
One band will be chosen to represent the nation with highest honour at this year’s 2014 international battle at the world’s most prestigious metal festival Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany.
The finals will have the following representation and will be judged along with all other rounds by a panel of music industry representatives.
1 finalist from Vancouver, BC
1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off in Alberta final)
2 finalists from Toronto, ON
1 finalist from Montreal, QC
Last year’s battle was witnessed to Toronto, ON’s epic power/death metal band Crimson Shadows not only winning the 2013 Canadian final but conquering the international final and performing in front of thousands unknown to their behemoth sound. (Video of that champion set can be viewed here.) The band joined a list of Canadian heavyweights such as Voivod, Exciter, Razor, Annihilator, Anvil, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, 3 Inches of Bloods, Despised Icon and Danko Jones who have performed at the festival in years past.
Submissions were open from December 5, 2013 to January 31, 2014.

Born in the village of Parkdale and taking their name from a Neil Young lyric – ‘All those rough boys, playin’ that rock and roll’ – Toronto’s Rough Boys deliver unapologetic, cut-throat rock and roll with a twist.
The band’s third EP, Blood, Booze and Gasoline, which is slated for a July 22, 2014 release, offers “bluesy stoner rock songs in a punk metal setting, thus putting us somewhere in a grey area of the heavy music world,” explains vocalist/bassist Tom Gervais. Basically, if it’s an alternative to most of today’s metal genres you’re looking for, you got it!
Packed with aggression and emotion, The Rough Boys’ music is bound to leave you in both shock and awe while forcing you to press ‘Play’ again and again.
The band has shared the stage with Cauldron, Fuck the Facts, Axxion, Midnight Malice, Adrenechrome, Saigon Hookers to name a few.

‘Mordrake’ is now available on iTunes and Bandcamp with a limited edition Hate T-Shirt designed by Bob Skelton, the acclaimed airbrush artist responsible for the band’s corpse-paint. Produced at Uplift Studios by Kevin Jardine (Slaves On Dope) and co-produced by Dan Lauzon (Entropy) and Hollow, the debut is the follow up to the band’s 2010 EP ‘Cynoptic Eschaton’ and features 12 extreme tracks all recorded with an unique analogue approach. Without the use of any triggers, midi or copy/paste editing, the album showcases live off the floor performances that bring a breath of fresh air into an over-compressed and digital world of today’s recordings. There’s something to be said about technology and its ability to bring musicians together and Vancouver’s Expain has Craigslist to thanks for its birth.
Mixing thrash with jazzier elements and everything in between, the band delivers music that’s energetic, diverse and thoughtful in every sense of the word. “Our music tends to be very melodic and we put a big emphasis on the songwriting, as well as the individual riffs,” says guitarist Eric Morrison.
The band’s debut album, ‘Just the Tip’, plays to its sense of humour, but also represents the beginning of a musical journey that’s not bound to stop or slow down any time soon. Writing about everything from overcoming adversity to partying hard, living in an ever-changing city and the state of today’s society as a whole, Expain has captured its true identity on record.
As Morrison explains, “We go through many different concepts on this album but I think throughout all of it there is an attempt to stay hopeful and make something positive out of difficult or unpleasant situations.”

Ottawa, ON video game rock nerds DOUBLE EXPERIENCE has teamed up with PureGrainAudio.com for the premiere of the latest track ‘Here’s Y’ from their forthcoming album ‘721835′ recorded by fellow science-fiction aficionado Al Jacob (He is Legend, A Skylit Drive) in North Carolina.
“Here’s Y is the biggest departure from our formative years as a band, but we’re really happy with the end result. There’s just something strangely satisfying about an eerie little pop song that essentially runs down a list of the reasons why you disappoint so many people. In additional news, DE recently wrapped up their ‘Rated M For MaTour’ that included a showcase at this year’s Canadian Music Week to add their 500+ shows and collection of over 100,000 miles during their multiple past tours across Canada, the UK, and the States. Taking no time to hit the road again, the band is going South to the USA for their ‘Smells Like Freedom Tour’ this June, which includes performances at Pegasus Records Store in Florence, AL and video game stores Game Over in Houston, TX and Austin, TX.
“Though this won’t be our first time touring in the USA, each show we booked was in a city or state we have never played before. We’ve already compiled another list of dream locations to visit based on the Food Network, too.” comments bassist Tim Kealey.
August 1st will see the release of their new album ‘721835′, a curious collection of songs that are inspired by everything the band loves and considers nerdy. Showcasing a creative sound influenced by geeky comic books, trading cards, classic 8 bits games to today’s future 3D experiences, the album follows up their 2011 EP ‘One Big Quicksand’ recorded and produced by Jayson DeZuzio (Coheed and Cambria, My Chemical Romance) that was released via Blue Sapphire/Universal Music Canada.

Formed just last year, DISPARAGER has always had the crazy notion that music is art and that art is never a means to an end but an end in itself. As an extension of frontman Chris AhKao regaining his life from personal demons, this debut EP is a testament to that. Bursting with dense rawness and precision while pushing the boundaries of metal with tracks like “At Least I Still Have Bon Iver” – half folk song, half crushing mix of Isis and Slayer – and “Pictures” – a time signature mindfuck the band is proud NOT to call prog rock. The music is meant to showcase a refusal to settle, to compromise, to live any other life than that inspired by unwavering intent, self-expression and integrity.
